Phone was locked by an idiot, usb debugging off - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I dont know much about this kind of stuff. I spent all day researching but all I understand is that I need usb debugging on in order to use ADB. is there a way to get this usb thing enabled with my phone locked? I cant factory restore this thing it has way to many important things on it and frankly I will end up doing something immensely stupid to the person that cost me that... I really need help or im screwed.

Calm down and think of alternative points of entry. That was a valid and helpful suggestion above as it is easy if you only had a few accounts.
Have you flashed a custom recovery to the phone in the past? If not, research getting into the bootloader to flash a custom recovery first.
Then back up the system in recovery and copy files to PC before trying alterations to bypass system security.
First thought is to edit the build.prop file of the system from recovery, to turn on USB debugging. Then proceed with whatever other info you found before this thread.
Could also try to alter the system partition via recovery zip. There may be a mod out there for this: http://en.miui.com/thread-5684-1-1.html but do have to be wary of compatibility with your ROM. Best to check it out and ask first before flashing.

Flash a custom recovery, make a NANDroid, backup the SD card. Copy whatever you need from the NANDroid, factory reset, copy it back. Done

OP, folks are trying to help, and I am watching this thread too, I suggest if you have a legitimate issue, you contact your carrier as well.
I hope you get your problem resolved, but being disrespectful in your plight is not proper, for you or any user.

im a bit new to xda developers. ive scourged the forums all day via search and found no concrete help or answers.
FIRST: i dont know what adb is and because of that, idk why my nandroid backups and restore wont work. it say "push via adb" or something like that
SECOND: i also dont know how to use sdk or whatever it is.
i need a detailed walkthrough of some sorts because the search on this forum sucks and did not help me at all
*COUGH*google search "ADB HOW TO" *COUGH*
look at the results!
took all of 2 seconds dude.....not being able to find info on adb is bs. not trying to be a douche but seriously....

not to highjack the thread, but whats it mean when recovery starts prompting you to exctecute command via adb/sdk? i noticedbmy bluecarebear is TRUELY angry with me, so much hes not wiping my ext or dalvk!

Well using the xda search "ADB" the first result is a thread that leads you to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
How is that difficult? Everything you need to know about the ADB et al is there
As far as the sdk is concerned, your hero is rooted so it is on your pc already if you followed the traditional process. Otherwise it is there in the link as well.
Seriously I am not trying to be a smart ass but too many people give up before even trying.

I would try reflashing your recovery image.
I had trouble with the green one a while back, I changed images a couple times for other reasons. Back on green cb now with no problems since flashing over the problematic image.

im not up on most of the geek terminology or whatever it is, in other words the guide here wasnt helpful, but since im rooted, i guess i dont need it(sdk) or whatevr. i still cant figure out why i cant make any nandroid backups or restore currently stored ones

*edit- +1 On what subliminalurge says in the next post. This stuff is not hard to learn. Either commit yourself to a couple weekends of focused enlightenment or make your peace with the stock setup. Almost any of us would be happy to help... after you take the first couple steps and learn some of the FUNDAMENTALS.
Go to the "GUIDE WIKI" and read read read, when you start becoming familiar with some of the "geek terminology" come back and we'll help connect some of the dots.

[Q] Force USB Debugging

Hello all,
First of all I appreciate there are loads of threads of possible not genuine reasons i.e. stolen phones and so forth. However I do have a good reason and would be happy to discuss the reasons via PM only.
I need to bypass a "pattern too many times" issue - I was looking to talk to the handset via ADB but USB Debugging is not active. Can this be forced?
I am yet to try the bug with "username email" with password "null".
Equally if you know the answer but want to keep it off the boards - again PM me.

I do not fully understand your explanation, anyhow what I get is that you want to have USB Debugging enabled by default after a reboot.
If my assumption is correct, you just need to edit your build.prop in the /system directory by changing the the specific parameter "persist.service.usb.setting=1" instead of "0".
Anyhow such thing need to be rather posted into the Questions and answer part of the forum.
The handset is locked out due to a pattern being used too many times incorrectly.
I need to remove the pattern and google access without losing data. I understand the best way is to talk to the handset over ADB but USB Debugging is not active so I wanted to know if there was a way of forcing the handset.
The reason I said to PM is that I know some people wont help as they thing that the poster does not have the correct intensions. I however have.
Re-reading your post - to edit the build.prop I assume can only be done if the handset is rooted?

yes, you're right. This only possible at rooted devices since the /system is r/o by default and it needs to be mount r/w for this change. Anyhow you need the access to /system either by terminal or by root explorer.

As I said, I have not catched completely the aim of his question.
Anyhow, there is no more feedback and either it is enough or otherwise will start again questioning ...
I have a SGS which has been blocked with "Pattern been entered too many times" and therefore its asking for GMail details which are not known. So I was going down the route of trying to activate ADB so I can extract the data stored on the device first - I can not wipe the user data. I am trying to do this in a forensic manner guys. Sorry I kept that detail to myself - I must stress this phone is not stolen.
I am a forensic analyst and this is a wee bit beyond our usual remit.
If you are what you claim to be then, what you seek to do should be child's play to you, you should also have a high enough IQ to realise this sort of thing goes in Q&A not Dev.
The needed solution has already been given to you.
To be quite honest anyone can claim its for legit reasons, dont mean a thing really does it.
If it is for legit reasons then get hold of the OWNER and get them to unlock it!

That my friend was the reason I didnt want to say what I am trying to do. There is no need for your rudeness on the matter. This was a question for developers as ADB is usually used in developing is it not?
Having an high IQ means nothing - I was asking the developing community for help not to do my job for me.
The OWNER is the one in question therefore is not going to give me the bloody answer.
So thank you for your objection.

As you see, this has moved to Q&A as it has nothing to do with development and is a question needing an answer.
To show no offence was meant.
Flash a custom kernel, one with clockwork mod included, you can then get full access to all files on the device, either via adb or doing a nandroid backup and then pulling the files to a PC for you to do as you wish with.

New N6 shipped with developer build?

Just bought a brand new N6 and its not downloading any ota's, still on 5.0. The build is LNX07M which is a developer build and apparently will not download any ota's. Has anyone heard of this? Did a quick Google search and there is hardly anything about this build.
I have no access to a computer, am I stuck on this build and 5.0?

because its not "proper", and normally isnt used properly. but ill explaine to you the proper way. you can try an app called kingsroot. you csnt get it at the play store, youll have to search google for it. after you install it, then run it, youll have root. but, youre not done yet. you will want to download the latest twrp recovery for the nexus 6 with your phone and keep it there. then you will unstall flashify from the play store. you will now use flashify to flash the twrp recovery. now, last thing, to get your bootloader unlocked. you will install any bootloader unlock apps, like boot unlocker or similar(that might delete everything from your phone), then youre done. ive never tried this on a nexus, but have on other devices, just so you know.

If you can get to a computer, download this: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/shamu-mra58k-factory-5b07088c.tgz
It's the Marshmallow (6.0) factory image for the Nexus 6. Run the batch file inside and it'll flash your phone. Note that this WILL wipe it.
Here's the actual Google-supplied information on it: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en

It'll be fine. It's the complete system image, so it doesn't matter what you're on currently. Note that you will have to install all sorts of extra crap to get the Android SDK installed and working and the proper drivers, but it's not that hard, just gigs of downloads when everything is all said and done.

If it's not grabbing an OTA, not sure what else you can do, short of downloading all the OTAs and flashing via recovery. But no guarantee that'll work as you're on a development build... There probably isn't an OTA to go from your development build to a release build.

Dude, come on... I know this is the Q&A section, and were supposed to be nicer here... But this lazyness is bull****.
You act like using a computer is impossible, then as soon as it takes some work.... You can get at one the next day?
Stop expecting to be spoon fed and at least try to learn something fist. There are a TON of write ups on how to do this. You spend how much money on a phone, and now you don't care to educate yourself on it?
Instead of expecting other to do all the work for you, read through the stickied index thread in the general section

It has a newbie guide that literally holds your hand through the whole process. Post 2 has info on "how to flash factory images", use method 2 as method 1 in that thread will not work with the MM factory image.
Nice people have already spend a lot of time and effort documenting these things for you, as they are common questions. People like Simms and the other posters in this thread answer questions and offer support for free out of the kindness of their heart... Don't create extra work for them by ignoring all the effort already put out by other members, expecting it all to be regurgitated to you.

I linked him to that already. No need to be a **** about it. He was looking for an easy way to do it now, when he doesn't have a computer. **** got crazy, so he asked if it would be easier with a computer, which the answer is yes.
Wouldn't you be excited as **** if you had a new phone? Wouldn't you want to get it up and running as quickly as possible? Well... now he's gotta wait until he has a computer. At that point its a legitamate question. This is a very different situation that is not well covered here, and requires a unique solution not many would come up with.
But "I absolutely have no computer nor laptop access" is pretty different then "I can access one TOMORROW. Sheesh, having something 1 day away is pretty far from it not being a possibility.
And I think you would agree it would be a significantly better idea to wait that day then to proceed with the method you gave (not that it was bad of you to give it... but you tried to differentiate and he held out to avoid being told to do it the hard way)

We are told time and time again that their are no bad questions. Truth is there are more bad questions then good ones.
Him asking about a build that provides few google hits is very legitimate.
Him asking about doing it without a computer because he doesn't have one is legitimate.
It only becomes an issue when he doesn't get the answer he wants, and all of a sudden he does have computer access.
And given that he is going to proceed in a computer... It becomes nothing more then "How do I update my phone?", which is VERY well documented.
I not only gave him the link to the information he needed, AND even corrected the information pointing out that the flashall script fails and that he would need to use the second method listed in the instructions I linked him to (since I know he will likely have limited time to fail and figure out whats wrong)
"That's the exact opposite of what you're saying you strive to do. I don't get it."
Then let me explain.
Would you skip your homework, ignore your textbook, then show up to class asking your teacher to explain it again? We are here to help... but how or why should I care more about it then he does? With no attempt made to learn, how much should I care to teach him?
Its a pretty big **** you to all those who have spend countless hours documenting this stuff to help new people to ignore their work and tell someone to do it again.

I've found a cheap nexus 6 for £30, but there are some issues I am wondering if I can work around.
Previous owner had a custom rom on it, but failed to make a backup of it before wiping for selling.
The USB port on the phone doesn't work so wireless charging is my only option for power which is fine because that's what I use every day.
The device currently only boots int TWRP, but as the USB isnt working I need to know if there is any other way to get roms onto the device.
I apologise if it's a stupid question but I am still learning about this.
Many thanks!
I don't think you can install anything without either a working USB or a rom file already on the phone.
Some people have been able to replace the USB, but I guess it isn't easy, because it is soldered to the main board.

There are no stupid questions, except for ones that aren't asked. Unfortunately, unless you have the USB port repaired you won't be able to do much.

Thank you, I figured as much, and I can't find anywhere local still repairing nexus 6s so I'm gonna hunt for something else thanks for the input!
You might have done this but make sure you boot to twrp and then click on install then select storage and see if the rom file was not erased during the wipe. Probably is not there but worth a try if you haven't done that.

Question Device asking for password after restart.

So all of a sudden the s21 is asking for password after restart. I use the same password or 4 variations of it for these accounts. However I cannot login. I can goto web or new device and log in to my Google and Samsung accounts. But the device does t want to allow this.
I’ve seen options to flash firmware back one, I’ve done this in past. And can walk through most options. I tried ADB. But it is not enabled. And that’s become a major issue. If I could do any kind of backup, retrieval of the photos and contacts. That’s all I care about. The rest is not a big deal.
Anyone have any kind of insight? Direction? Thoughts? I can see the device in find my, but there aren’t any options to unlock. Just send message and erase.
I am willing to try almost anything, and if there’s a paid service I will try that. I’ve never seen this screen before, and have never had this issue. It does not make sense.
I purchased a new device and setup with passwords no problem. But there isn’t a backup on Google of the phone there. I tried wiping tge cache and that didn’t help either. I attached a photo of what the screen looks like.
Fwiw. I have photos of wedding and brother that just passed. i don’t want to lose those. I am desperate for any answer. Someone with tech support said I could send device to LV and they can do it. Takes two weeks and phone might not be useable afterwards.
Have you tried using Odin to flash the latest firmware?
What exactly does the password screen look like?

I have not tried flashing anything yet. I was afraid of messing things up. But I’m familiar with the process and am willing to try
Stop stealing phones
Back up your files and do a factory reset

How would I back it up if I can’t log in?

I do have a question about Odin, I downloaded from XDA. But it says to delete Google account before flashing or it will have problems. Wouldn’t that cause me to lose data?
No, if you back up with smart switch
Or you can bypass

Fellas, let's try to keep it civil. If you don't have anything of substance to contribute, it really doesn't need to be posted in this thread.

It is 0rigins that make it first
And we didn't solved this problem
This happened to a friend of mine and i was able to "solved" it because he had a custom recovery TWRP.
I copied his files to a PC, while the phone was in recovery mode, then do a factory reset.
Later i found out that was an easier way to unlock the phone:
Remove /Bypass Lockscreen With Recovery
Recently when i restored my data using TWRP i faced a problem at lock screen. I was not able to unlock my phone with the pin i set Earlier..So after so many attempts i was able to find a solution for that problem.(works with pattern, pin etc)...
forum.xda-developers.com
But all this requires a TWRP recovery. If you don´t have that, i guess that the password you need is the one that you have set on the device, while configuring fingerprints.
If you have "find my phone" enable, you should be able to reset that password using a browser on a PC...
Have you found out any other solution?
