Hope it happens soon. I got 2 Chromecasts still unopened in their boxes sitting inside a Best Buy bag. Don't watch Netflix so they are pretty useless at the moment without local content streaming.

can't happen soon enough.
having plex would make this dongle have a use. until then it's sitting in it's box, rooted already of course.
if it wasn't for the netflix credit and the fact i had to use up $5 bb reward, i don't think i'd have gotten the chromcast since i already have a google tv, roku, segate live tv, and wdtv. the only one i really use is the sony google tv on my projector.

I am in total agreement! I also wish it could handle peer to peer, so when I'm in the camper I could go from phone to ChromeCast without using an unknown, unsafe WiFi.

Just buy a cheap-o N wireless access point or router and stream that way. Don't have to have internet.

How exactly do you do that?
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 4.1.3
Assuming you are talking about streaming from plex, not the internet, the content is on your laptop right? So get a N WAP or an N router, plug it in in your camper and join its wireless network with both your chromecast and laptop. You won't be able to get to the internet, obviously, but they can then see each other which is the goal, right?
I think, for security sake, I'd want a VPN to protect myself if I'm using their Wi-Fi. Will that work with a VPN?

Why would you need a VPN? Basically you would be setting up your own wireless network which you can use normal security settings and the only devices on it would be yours. The only downside is you will not have access to the internet.
I too would love to see Plex support asap, though It appears the original article was a little generous with their "fall" estimate. Still no official word. But the Plex devs usually keep a pretty tight lid on things until they're ready (or able, if Google has them holding it) to release new features.
Release could be hours away, it could be months away. I just know I'll be thrilled when it does arrive.
Thankfully, I can be pretty patient. And having some free Netflix in the meantime doesn't hurt.
Has anyone heard any more intell on a Plex upgrade? It's been a few months and I was just wondering.

Just found an app called Localcast and decided to give it a try. It's available on the Pay Store and it's free. No invasive permissions and it works quite well. Larger photos take a few extra seconds and some videos have some stutter, but over all it's working nicely. I'm sharing this on a couple of sites because I think it's great for getting better use out of our ChromeCast.

And IMO offline storage is more useful, especially on a Wifi-only device, but also for anyone else with a limited data plan on their phone or data connection capable tablet. Also, pretty sure a $9 16GB USB stick is more cost effective than pretty much any 16GB cloud storage option.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
There is actually a thread over in the Themes and Apps section that the developer made. He is really open to input. I like the app, as I don't have to root to use a flash drive with videos saved on it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Well, isn't that a kick in the teeth, because I just rooted last night simply to use USB OTG. At first I kind of felt "meh" over the read only factor, but then I got to thinking, am I really going to need to transfer from tablet to external media? I'd much rather transfer from external media to tablet, do what I need to do with watching whatever content I may have, then simply delete it off the tablet... no reason to transfer it back when it's the same darn file. Some people may have uses for having a 2 way setup, but I'm sure this will fit the bill for a lot of people. I do find it a considerable bummer that ext* file systems aren't supported, but meh.
Thank you thank you thank you!

i dont understand the bickering of cloud data. it is nice but i have 20 hours of plane flights coming up. cloud data will not be a very good solution for me compared to plugging a hard drive into my tablet.
Being a non-root user, this is great news for me. I always used splashtop to watch my videos directly from my computer, though it gave me no trouble, I would much rather have the movie with me.
Can't wait till the developer puts it back up.
What is the name of the app? Can anyone share the APK?
Downloaded Nexus Media Importer yesterday. It works as needed on my GNex, Nexus 7 and Xoom. No root necessary. Amazing! I'd pay for this app in a heartbeat! Sorry have no place to upload it.

Google does NOT want you to be able to store lots of things on your device. They want you to use there Cloud services. This way they see more about you . See more about your Habits and so on. As well as get most of your stuff on there cloud.Having you attached to them this way helps keep you for a long term customer. Not to mention they sell Data collected about what you do and store to other companies . OF course they say they do this without exposing who you are.
SO the answer is.
Unless they change there way of thinking . Or consumers start switching to products with much more storage . They will likely keep ON Device storage as it is . Give you just enough for you to keep it almost full. And Require some type of Networked Storage.
BUY A HOME SERVER.. there are many out there from companies likes Netgear western digital..Synology buffalo and so on.
I have Synology Disk station and love it My data on MY server ..
Good Luck .. :fingers-crossed:

I never thought about it this way, but it makes perfect sense!
I have the 32GB one and I rarely use more then 16GB. I do watch series on, but I delete it once I watch it. I wouldn't upgrade to 64 one if it came out, I don't need it.
If however, there will be a N7 with 64 GB, it's probably going to be the 2014 or 2015, not the current 2013.
What about the *possible* nexus 8 that was up on Google's android.com site earlier this week? Will that have 64gb?

I'd say that's definitely gonna be the case, especially since Google is conducting their Google Cast SDK "Hackathon" on Dec. 7-8th. I'd say the SDK will be released either at that time or less than a week after. My bet is that it will be officially released immediately following that event though.

Yeah since I'm outside the US and have an unrootable Chromecast I had to buy a new wireless router just so I could use DD-WRT to get around the Chromecast's built-in Google DNS and access the US Netflix library. But on the bright side it's a damn good router even without the Chromecast

Yes, if done via the Cast extension for Chrome, but this does on-the-fly transcoding (decode/re-encode) on your computer so it needs some CPU horsepower.
Chromecast cannot natively play Flash, rooted or not.

What kind of quality are you guys getting with Chromecast? I was considering buying one so that I don't need to keep taking videos from my phone to my laptop to play on the TV, but I'm a little hesitant with devices like this because of a very, very bad experience with Apple TV.
I've been using AllCast with my Roku3 and it's awesome. I'm assuming it is the same concept. I'll have to check out Avia.
This is basically the whole reason I bought a Chromecast was for when I travel, I can just plug in the Chromecast and send movies to the in-room TV along with Netflix and such. I'm tired of watching movies and shows that I pay for on a 7" screen when there is a 42" TV just 10' away. Glad that I can finally start using it now that development is picking up.
All I need is:
Netflix
Hulu
Play videos off my mobile

On-device is subject to Chromecast's format restrictions.
Remember that HBO GO, YouTube, Netflix, etc already have and serve their content in Chromecast-compatible format.

Well it may not be quite as easy as all that depending on the Hotel and how they have their network AUTH set up.
Many set up AP Isolation so two devices on the network can't talk to each other....
In some cases it will require Certificate Auth (such as going to a web browser first) which is not going to be very conducive to connecting the Chromecast.
Miracast makes a direct connection but that might preclude you from connecting to the Hotel AP for content on the Web...
Just a forewarning...
I'm watching a media file on my Nexus 7 (Cyanogenmod) using LocalCast or a similiar app (doesn't matter which one) and after a random time period, Chomecast just restarts (?). At least it shows the spinning Chrome-icon and afterwards the default standby-wallpapers.
My router and wi-fi are fine, my tablet is fine.
Maybe it's the fault of my ROM, who knows. I just want to ask people how they fixed it if they had the same problem.
