I'm doing research for a friend's phone. He has the AT&T HTC Vivid. My old phone actually. I have yet to root it or do any of the dirty work as I am concerned with the stability and flaws in ROMs for this device. A little advice would be appreciated.
I have read about the Dirty Unicorn ROM with the Pac kernel (or since updated stock kernel). They say the volume is fixed in this ROM. Can anyone confirm?
Also would like to know of other ROMs and what is available out there through others advice. I want to find him stable as he cannot be flashing daily the way I can. I have seen lots of bluetooth issues called out. I am more concerned with stability, call volume, and definitely good data/wifi. Someone point me in the right direction perhaps?
I would love to see Sense gain more support for this device, but I'm not a dev so I'm sure it's no easy task. I have used CM alot in the past, and loved most of it, but it always had its bugs so I hesitate to flash without gathering information.
Thanks guys.

No DU just fixes The volume increase decrease while in a call
If you care about in call volume try a sense 4.1 rom or a sense 3.6 rom
Ok. I knew that answer was coming. How bad is the volume thing? My main goal is just to not have to flash his phone 100 times. If it was my phone, as I already do.. I would flash and play with it for weeks before I chose a ROM. It's not an ideal option for this, though. I don't even want mess with internals if it's not for a clear upgrade.
Is there ongoing work in your CM builds to figure out these in-call volume issues?

It's always going to be work. and for me my volume is just fine. In call works loud enough for me. But everyone has their own preferences. Other people cant use the roms due to the volume issue
To answer your question... I would put CM10.1 from albinoman... Prolly the most stable we gots

I have an AT&T Vivid, and have had varied results in this department. Though, I work in a server room/data center, so I have more ambient noise to contend with, but I've experienced horridly low volume on some builds all the way to just less that stock quality. The first ROM I experienced this on was a Sense 4.1 ROM, but also experienced it in different ways with aosp/aokp builds as well. I don't know if it is related, but I did notice a significant increase in the in call volume after performing the S-OFF wire trick. Though that could just be a coincidence. But one common theme I have found, is when the in call volume has been low, don't even attempt speakerphone use. As when I did, it either didn't work at all (or so low it's inaudible) and then when returning to the earpiece, 6/10 times (guesstimate) the issue of no volume followed for the duration of the call. And the odds would increase when activating speaker before the call is answered on the other end (making calls). However, I must say that I the in call volume using bilibox's unofficial rootbox, I do not experience the low in call volume, but the speakerphone is (mostly) useless. (Still an awesome ROM though, just waiting for mobile data fix )
Not sure if my ramble is helpful or not, but those are summed up experiences I've had thus far. If you really just want it to work without goofing with anything, I 'd recommend either a rooted/modified/de-bloated stock ROM.
There's my 2 cents {plunk plunk}

I've never rooted my phone but am about to receive my third nexus one because of power button failure and I don't want to do it again. I watched some Nexus One development video where they were using a machine to depress the trackball thousands of times, to simulate lifetime use and test for failure. I guess they didn't test the power button.
Any suggestions on a ROM similar to stock but that has wake on trackball press? I was looking at cyanogenmod.
It seems like there should be an app for this, but I noticed an enhancement request on Google code, I guess that ability was removed in 2.3.3.
I am currently using anyunlock to wake my phone with the volume button but am not really a fan. I don't want to adjust the volume and it replaces the lock screen.
Thanks a lot.

CyanogenMod is one of the best alternative ROMs out there. All the features of stock with a ton more added (along with bugfixes).

agreed with cm7 (if you prefer the normal stock look) I personally don't like all that sense / miui stuff. now that the big bugs are fixed, i don't see why you shouldn't give it a try.
cyanogen 7 really is easily the best option. and with the newest battery increases and optimizations, its a no brainer to use cm7 over stock.
Running Kang-o-rama-1.2 . . . . It's just CM7, kind of.
Loaded it last night and seems to be the best so far. The least amount of lost MMS compared to regular CM7.

There were issues with MMS messages in the nightlies due to a merging conflict when they merged to the 2.3.4. This has been resolved for the last couple of weeks.
I'm not sure if that is what you were talking about.
How much free memory do you have on your phone?
Earlier this year I was using CM 10.1 and everything was great.
Then, one day, the latest nightly introduced the following issue: During audio playback, the volume will suddenly drop to a very low level, then after a second or two, return to the proper level. This will happen approximately 5-10 times per minute of playback.
At the time, I saw no way to fix it, so I switched to a Sense-based rom.
Months passed, and I returned to CM 10.1 a week ago and learned that the problem still exists, months later. Yesterday I tried the Carbon rom and it also has the issue, so I assume it's with all AOSP based roms. I've been searching the threads and have not found much on this bug. Almost all posts with "audio" or "volume" and "bug" are about issue with bluetooth audio, or losing audio after a call.
But I do see the rare post from someone else with the same complaint, so I know it's not something affecting just me.
I'm wondering if anyone can help me fix this issue. I very much prefer the AOSP-based roms over sense, but because of this one tiny thing, they are basically unusable for me.
Any help would be appreciated.
possible solution
This is not guaranteed to work, but I've gotten it to on slim bean rom and one other 4.2 based rom. Mind you, this was on a different device, but the coding is very likely the same. I used solid explorer from the market to edit the xml once the rom was installed. just grant su access. go to system>etc>media_profile.xml and every place that you see <audio codec, change it from "aac" to "amrwb" there are a lot of them, just double check and make sure you got them all and input correctly. I hope it works man, I can't get it to on Carbon but it works on slim-based roms. I must remind you, this has worked on my device for the specified roms and I am not responsible for anything that happens to yours. If it fails, simply edit the xml back to "amrwb" instead of "aac" and you'll be back where you started, no harm done. Don't forget to save your changes in solid explorer. Good luck.
Hi All,
I've recently purchased the HTC One and flashed it with Android Revolution for 4.2.2
There are some small issues that I don't like with the phone which are:
- Camera isn't very good
- It gets warm often (even after browsing the web > 10mins)
- Volume steps are not to my liking (coming from IOS) - too large of a gap when hearing music
I've recently discovered ElementalX which has thermal options, maybe this will fix the warm phone issues? Anyone have experience with it working well with phone temps?
I'm not sure how to fix the camera, is there a ROM/Kernel that improves it?
There is a volume step fix out which doesn't do anything to the volume but increases the steps - so I guess there isn't a fix for this yet.
In conclusion, I think I've overloaded the phone trying different kernels (I like the HTC logo option to turn on/off) and I'm thinking of starting from scratch again. I want a near stock ROM e.g. Android Revolution - or should I just put stock on there (will root access still work on a stock rom if I've installed SuperUser ?)
Does ElementalX work on any ROM with 4.2.2?
What's the best ROM + Kernel for the things I want? Should I go back to stock + ElementalX? Will that work?
Hope someone can help, thanks!!

There are several Volume Step Mods in the Themes / Apps Section.
My personal Setup is ViperRom 2.1 with Elemental 3.4 Kernel but my Battery get on 42 Degrees so its not a heavy Problem when u can live with the temps
The Cam is a 4Ultrapixel so u dont get more then 4MP but u get 300% more Light on Night Shots...
If you want a rom like Android Revolution, why not go with Android Revolution? I'm using it with ElementalX.
The thermal options will make your phone run cooler, but it will impact performance somewhat. There are mods for the volume steps.
And for the camera, it's nothing without Zoe, so I'd recommend a Sense rom if you want at least somewhat nice pictures.
Edit: Grooov beat me to it

I've tried the volume mod but although the number of steps increases, the volume doesn't. So it acts like you don't have a mod to change the volume but just increase the number of steps (if that makes sense)
Did you get 42 degrees with the thermal option set? Is that under heavy load?
I can always see pixels (dots) on the camera which is why I said it isn't very good, maybe it works better outdoors. Isn't ViperRom heavily customised? I'll have a look anyway.

Your signature says you're using Stock! Anyway I was really just asking if it's worth installing Android Revolution if I can still get root access with the stock rom? Is that possible? Maybe I'll stick with Android Revolution.
Is there a way to remove these Kernels that I've added (can't remember which one I got) - should I just reflash Android Revolution without wipe? I don't want to lose stuff e.g. apps/contacts/bookmarks etc.
Do the thermal options slow the phone down? It is quite annoying at the moment that the phone decides to get warm whenever I start to use it, to do anything!
Thanks

ARHD contains a lot of optimizations, as mentioned in the thread. Reflashing a rom will also re-install the kernel (if it's included in the rom .zip). Seeing as you have root access, you can easily back up your apps using Titanium Backup, and you can sync the contacts + bookmarks with your Google account so they'll be automatically re-added. But as you're already on ARHD, it probably can't hurt to "dirty flash". Just make sure to make a backup in case anything goes south.
And you're right about my sig, I'll edit it now

ViperRom based on Stock Sense Rom with a bunch of Tweaks
and the 42 degrees are under heavy load like high performance games e.t.c.
greeetings
and the camera has greater pixels for more light thats the 300% light extra
Installed the new update to ARHD + ElementalX with thermal set to cool. It does seem to have cooled down slightly which is good! It's a bit early to tell if it really is cooling it down though.
The only issue I have now is that "Keep" keeps closing unexpectedly. I have disabled it for now. Anyone know why Keep keeps crashing and how to fix it?

Yea I gave GPE a go today and almost immediately missed sense, Nothing wrong with it, infact it looks great and performed well, I just missed sense.
HTC have done a great job this time round.
However I've got my eye on Paul's Modaco switch rom, which looks to tick all the boxes, only problem i can foresee is the inability to use custom rom's for the switch, I'm not a great fan of stock sense, I like colours and mods too much
Each to their own.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm gonna stick with ARHD + ElementalX for now
I don't want to move away from sense otherwise I could have got a nexus 4 instead, and I like blinkfeed.
I tried a vid today and the phone didn't warm up that much,!! Maybe it's also because I used airplane mode and battery saver at the same time too.
Now I just gotta fix my other problems like find a better video player than vlc which seems to have some slight sync issues. Try to get my klipsch headphones to work better I.e. button controls and get this volume step issue sorted! Any suggestions for any of these?
Maximus HD 12.1.0 FTW
So far my favorite Rom. JB 4.3 with sense. Best of both worlds! Also has 4.1.2 speaker volume & can add CRT-off animation

Thanks I'm using some headphones controller which works ok. Sometimes I have to double tap a million times before it works tho which is quite annoying. Setting speed to slower or faster doesn't help.
Using bsplayer for vids seems good no sync problems. So many roms to choose from! I'll stick with ARHD until 4.3 officially is supported by apps and released. This phone is slowly getting better thanks for your help all.
Another question... When I send a SMS and select a contact they appear more than once because its looking at the phone and SIM card at the same time. Is there a way to only look at the phone so I don't see duplicates?
Hello!
I just got a One Mini 2 - untouched - with original android.
Any suggestions where can i find a solution step by step to unlock the bootloader, s-off, which is the latest "upadated" rom for this phone ?
Everything is so old here, hard to find what i need.
Thanks folks!
For step by step method go to htcdev.com, select unlock bootloader, selext one mini 2 as your device and all steps to unlock bootloader are explained there.
Once you have successfully unlocked bootloader, you will need to flash custom recovery (TWRP) to flash any ROM
Currently the only working method for S-Off is Sunshine ($25).
Most updated stock ROM you can check on HTCdev as well for your device. As for custom CM Roms the most updated is CM13.
Hello there!
Thanks you very much your quick reply!
Except the s-off, if im staying on S-on - i can swap the recovery and the rom?
Silly question, but in the past 3 year i did nothing on HTC phones.
What about the CM13 - bugs?
Stable?

Yes you can swap recovery and roms, however only after unlocking the bootloader (some devices are unable to unlock thr bootloader, for some unknown reason despite following the proper procedure).
I came across only 4 bugs in cm 13.
1 At times the keyboard settings crashed at times it wouldnt.
2 The NFC came one for no reason cannot be disabled resulting in battery drain.
3 Lately the device would stay awake in battery settings despite screen off causing maassive battery loss, this was an android issue in Marshmallow without any known fix, I reverted back to stock for now waiting for CM14.
4 If camera settings are set to highest for picture quality some times the camera would crash and no solution except to restart the device, clear cache and data in apps settings.
There are some other reported bugs such as wifi security settings where some devices wouldnt connect to routers with WPA2, more issues can be found in the CM13 thread, you might or might not come across this issue, I didnt.
Also, loud speaker in music is slightly noisy and not crystal clear as with BoomSound and in calls ear piece sound is way too low and so is mic in recording, the member said he would fix audio problems in the next bug fix.

Hi,
I just took my old Nexus six out of the drawer thinking I would start using it again but sadly the dreaded speaker death has occurred. Is there a series of steps I should take to try to fix it? Earphones work fine and Bluetooth works fine but nothing comes out of the top speaker at all even with the volume set to high. I'm on android version 7.11, pure Nexus v. 7.1.1.20170215-OFFICIAL, rooted, with the kernel Franco 3.10.40.
What should I try first, hardware fixes or software? It used to work, now is dead.
Roll back to stock first to verify whether this is a hardware or software issue. If it's software, install a ROM more current than Pure Nexus. Otherwise you'll have to hunt for a new speaker.
I will install stock first. Where would I find a new speaker if that's what it needs?
Update: rolled back to stock and sound works fine now. You are brilliant! Now have to decide what ROM to use. Any recommendations?
You first have to decide if you want VoLTE or wifi-calling. For that you need a Oreo rom, and the only one I know that is still updated is LineageOS 15.1.
Otherwise, you can take your pick from the Pie roms. I believe that they all work fine on the N6, it's more a question of which extra features you prefer.

Is there any great advantage to upgrading from stock? Now that I've got the phone working pretty well I'm a little hesitant to start messing around with lineage or one of the pie ROMs. Will the phone run faster and have less lag and have better camera options if I upgrade the ROM?
Thanks again for helping me get my phone working again.

The new roms have many more features, both from the newer Android, and from the efforts of the rom devs.
Of course, you may not need or even like the new features. Myself, I hate the new auto-brightness in Pie.
There are also some speed optimizations, but IMO they don't make a world of difference.
I believe that the camera driver is closed source, and therefore unchanged from stock. The camera app can however provide different amounts of options on top of the driver (Snap Camera in lineage has a lot of options) - but you should be able to get that by installing other camera apps on stock as well.
But most of all, I like to have the newest security fixes.
The bootloader has an option called: "factory mode" that has an app called: "CQATest"
After loading it choose "CQA Menu Mode"
Audio --> Loudspeaker
This will play an audio test file at full volume until you press the vol down or back button.
This is a useful application for general hardware testing too.
