[Q] Can't seem to get back to stock w/o root - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I rooted the nook hd+ and I'm trying to get it back to stock using CWM and the stock 2.1.1 zip supplied in this thread in section 6. The problem is, whenever I boot to CWM and try to install the .zip, I get this error:
"Failed to retouch '/system/lib/libemoji.so'"
I'm not sure what's causing this, and also if I go through the steps of just reinstalling the stock 2.1.1 ROOTED .zip in that same thread, it goes thorugh fine. Is there anything I can do about this? I'm basically just trying to get it back to a stock, unrooted form. Thank you,

Go to CWM mounts and storage and format /system before flashing the stock zip. That fixed it for me. If it does not, try the 2.1.0 version.

I gave that a try, it gives me the same error. It actually also says after that error "E: Error in sdcard/NookHDplus....file name" (Status 7)"
Is there something wrong with the file perhaps? Like I said if I run the rooted .zip, it goes through fine.
EDIT: I figured it out. To get it to go through I did it in the following steps:
- booted to CWM, formatted system and wiped data/factory reset
- rebooted to CWM, installed .zip
And it worked. I was doing all of those things, just not quite in that order. Thanks for the help, you do great work here.

CWM error: can't mount /system

When trying to do a BACKUP from CWM it fails with the message:
"can't mount /system"
I did the "fix permissions" but that didn't help. The recovery is version 3.0.1.0 but I also tried 3.0.0.6 with same problem.
Rooted with auto-nooter 3.0.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Arghhhhhh! After flashing to 3.0.0.6 and trying the backup after I reboot it goes right back into the CWM.
Now I can't even load the O/S.
Edit: I recently remapped the vol keys. Worked fine but I'm wondering if that could have caused this mess.
I tried restoring from a previous backup and it also failed with "can't mount system" and now I'm stuck at the "n" screen. Looks like it's time for a fresh install. Back to square one.
I am in the same boat. Could you please explain how I can perform a fresh install?

Well, I wasn't able to. It kept booting back into the recovery module.
You can try the "8 reset" method.
Power off power on. As soon as you see the "n" power it off again. Do this 8 times and on the 8th time it MIGHT reload the original Nook software. I have done that a few times before and it always worked (I had to reload 1.1 and re-root). This time I must have really f'd it up and was not able to restore.
It's going back to B&N tomorrow. It suddenly just totally died. Lucky coincidence.
I experienced the same after updating to 3.0.1.0 from rom manager. I fixed it by flashing http://muffinworld.net/android/nookcolor/clockwork/cwmr_3.0.1.0.zip from recovery -- same way you'd flash a ROM or kernel etc. It updates both recovery/kernel.
Just an idea in case you get yours powered up again.

Thanks. I wish I would have seen that earlier.

I was having a similar problem. Same error of "can't mount /system", but the backup would just fail there and then I could reboot, no problem.
I used this fix by copying the linked ZIP file to my SD card and then using the clockwork recovery console to "install from ZIP file". Rebooted after and started the backup again from inside Rom Manager. It's working now.
Thanks!
I know this is a slightly old thread but I have a question.
I am just root stock and simply wanted to backup my system before trying the CM7 ROM.
When I run ROM Manager and simply try to "Backup Current ROM" it gives me the "can't mount /system" error.
I purchased ROM Manager I am unsure if any of the advice above applies to me since I am not currently running any ROMS. I just want to do a system backup.

[Solved] Boot repair

I attempted to put Phiremod onto my NC, but I formatted the boot partition so it doesn't start up. What's the easiest way to get my Nook going again?
Try using a CWR SD Card, and either flashing a nightly zip, or one of the U-Boot files floating around.
I think I just need to flash a proper boot file, which should I try for either CM7 or Phiremod?
Can anyone help me out? The sticky seems a bit outdated or maybe it's just confusing me.
I have a 2GB uSD card and I just want to try out Phiremod and the stable CM7 to see which I prefer. Do I have really have to restore to stock just to overwrite it again?
I decided to completely restore to stock firmware to see if I could get this thing to work. I downloaded the complete 1.0.1 zip, loaded it on my CWM recovery uSD card, formatted boot, system, data, and cache, flashed the recovery zip and then rebooted.... Didn't boot
I need help, what am I missing?
Follow sticky carefully, it works.

Do the 8 re-boot step. There is also a boot fix zip file or recovery zip file you can flash via your CWM SD.
I flashed the 3.2.0.8 recovery zip, but it still doesn't boot
Download this to your CWM sd card. And this. Then put in your CWM sd card, boot it up, flash the update_nc_stock_1.2.zip file, then ManualNooter. Take out the sd card and reboot. Should have stock + root.
Thank you, but I don't even want to use the B&N software. Either CM7 or Phiremod.
Can't I just repair the boot partition?
I went ahead and flashed the update-nc-stock-1.2-signed.zip then manual nooter
Took the card out and rebooted, nothing happens
Did you reboot? What do you see?
Nothing, screen doesn't come on
Help please!
Oh. Have your tried flashing this?
Where did you find that on the CM site? All I found under Nook Color were the 'update' zips
Downloading now
Ahh, it's a nightly CM7 build... I assume that it will completely format the EMMC?
Downloaded and flashed the latest nightly zip, still won't boot.........
Anyone else have any ideas I could try?
Perhaps I missed where you said you did it, but go back and take the Nook completely back to stock. I umderstand that you said you don't want to use to stock software at all, but you need to get it back to factory so you can at least boot the device.
Once you've done that, go ahead and follow the directions TO THE LETTER to load your CM7 or Phiremod.
Cliffs Notes: Trying to repair something when you can't even boot is a bit silly. Just start from square one and root. Enjoy!

Stock revert for dummies!?
For those of us that are thick, could someone step us through the factory restore process?
Did the Android upgrade for my wife but she does not like it. She wants to revert back to Nook HD+ stock firmware!
Thanks in advance.

Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and read item 6. Download plain stock 2.1.0 and flash it with the same CWM that you flashed CM10.1 with. Then do a factory reset with the same CWM. That should take you completely back to unregistered stock.

When you refer to CWM, do you mean the initial bootable CWM on the sd card or the CWM subsequently installed on the unit?
Can we load the stock firmware zip onto a blank sd card, reboot to the installed cwm recovery, wipe cache and do a factory reset, then use the 'install zip from sd card" option to flash the stock firmware?
After flashing the stock firmware zip, will it be completely stock (i.e. recovery, kernel, rom)? Thanks.

Either CWM is ok.
Yes to your second paragraph, but you do not need to wipe cache since the factory reset does that too.
And yes, if you flash that plain stock 2.1.0 and factory reset, it is completely stock. Your media files on internal memory remain though. If you want them gone too you must go to mounts and storage and format 'data and datamedia' before you reboot.

Help looking for HD+ Factory Image

My nook hd+ is stuck in the cm10.1 bootloop
CWM says error mounting /data
I believe this is from doing a "format /data" when flashing a new rom, which I now believe I wasn't supposed to do..
Anyway,
I'm trying to find the factory.zip that leapinlar is referring to in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2090817

The factory image is on a partition on emmc. But you will probably not find it. You were supposed to format /data. That is not the issue. You may be subject to the emmc bug.
You can try going to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and read item 6. It has a CWM flashable zip for stock.

I'll try that.
What happened was that I had an earlier version of cm10.1 from early July and I flashed the latest cm10.1.
Everything was working fine. So I rebooted into CWM to make a backup and deleted the old backup and rebooted.
That's when the bootloop started.
btw, thanks for helping me out.
I'm hoping that reverting back works!
Thanks Leapinlar!
My nook is back to cm10.1.
I followed your advice - after flashing the stock rom and several boots, the nook screen came up with a loading bar, I'm guessing to repair damaged files.
Then I went back to CWM, flashed cm10.1 and gapps, created a backup, and now my tablet is up and running.
Thanks again for you help

[Q] CM11 on Nook HD+ installation botched

I have flashed android ROMs successfully about a dozen times, but always get myself in trouble in the process. It never goes smoothly for me. I am pretty much a noob.
I was following steps outlined here, but when flashing internal recovery, I got an error message stating that it was corrupted and I had to reboot. After reboot, I cannot boot into Nook - it loops continuously and finally boots into CWM 6.0.4.6
At this point, I would be happy to install Kit-Kat 4.4 from SD, but ideally I would like it to be on EMMC
please, help me get this working! Thank you in advance.
You need to go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and make a new bootable CWM SD per item 1a. Then use that CWM to flash the plain stock zip from item 6. Follow that with a factory reset with CWM and when you boot without the SD inserted you will be back to plain stock so you can start over. If you want to try installing CM11 again follow the dummies guide also linked in my signature.
