So I have had this light sensor issue since .6.4 release and since until 2.7 there was always something broke with the ROM, I decided to stick with .3 which was stable with light sensors and still had couple of quirks which I really didn't care much about (mms, video ...) as long as light and GPS were perfect!
Now, the issue with the light sensor. You will know if the light sensors are working properly during the installation; once you flash the ROM and reboot the phone, right at the end of (blue) animation the bottom lights light up and the charging light turn red/green, if it is connected to charger. And it does this every time I install 2.6.3 but not since then! ( I can now install 2.6.3 on top of 2.7 and light sensors still works like a charm!)
So what really bothers me with the light sensor? Is it really that important? Well, the way my phone light sensor works is, it turns on only when its dark around and never times out as it should! It never turns on in the day light, you couldn't activate it even by pressing any the buttons at the bottom! The issue is two fold:
1. Light stays on all the time during the night when I am using the phone and drains battery faster
2. Though I really don't care much for not lighting up in the day/bright light, it annoys me that this most loved ROM isn't how it needs to be!
While I am still talking about lights, I think I should mention track ball notifications as well. Even though I have my track ball notifications are turned on, I am yet to see them working! It was randomly mentioned in some thread that it doesn't work! But I miss the point that why put it in the settings if it doesn't work?
I also have issues with Market update notifications, I have used other HTC based custom ROMs in the past and had no issues with notifications but with this I almost never got any!
So far I have tried many trial and error methods to see if it fixes:
- I have flashed ROM repeatedly few times, just to see if it fixes
- I have done complete wipe around 3 times and re-installed
- Rebooted phone several times in addition to above procedures
- In the half way somewhere I realized that I wasn't running Darch's recovery so now I have that too and tried the above procedures
When I was on .4 for a while and having the same issue with lights, some one recommended to take .so files from the other working ROM and patch it to the existing one and it never really worked for me.
With all this, I am not claiming that these issues exists with this ROM in general, it could be me! I could be doing something wrong! That's why I have tried to explain in detail what I have done and what is not working.
What am I looking for? - Help!! If anyone have came across these issues and able to successfully solve and make their phones work or if you have any idea about how to go about these issues, I would like to hear from you guys!!
Darchy, I love your work and this ROM ( that's why I am trying to figure out solution to these issues ) but at times you are very quick at dismissing people, yes some can be ignorant but we are not living in the perfect world!
Thanks in advance for everyone and thanks Darchy for this excellent ROM (it almost killed my desire to switch to some crappy carriers with huge bills to get Nexus One!)
i believe, as far as lights goes, thats just how the ROM is built. not just this one but all ROMs. near the earpiece is the light sensor. if its bright out, theres no point in having the bottom lights come on, youll be able to see the buttons. when its dark, the bottom lights will come on. its basically a battery save kind of thing. no point in having something on, if you really dont need to use it. as far as market notifications, i havent recieved any updates as far as apps goes so i cant tell wether or not they work.

Please read the post carefully and respond, I have made an effort to explain in detail.... the light never goes off in the dark! If I am reading an article for 20 minutes, it stays on for 20 mins, is that battery saving??

Well, it works but not the way it needs to be! It doesn't work at all in the bright light or day light but in the dark or in the low lit area it keeps on as long as the screen is on! It never times out if it is dark.

so you are saying the light sensor is working because the keys and trackball are lit up in the dark? pretty sure that is the point of the sensor yea? also find a hero rom with working trackball notifications, it has never worked. as far as the market notifications i have gotten 3 or 4 update notifications.
not trying to be a ****, ive had my fair share of issues but after about 4 wipes and reinstalls everything is working great.

which was what i was trying to say. if your in the dark, of course the bottom lights are gonna be on, and stay on. i dont think ive ever used a ROM where the bottom lights have time out while in the dark.

Glad I just saw this message before going to bed! I am downloading now..... will update in here soon done flashing..... thank you!
Ok...... lights are working perfect!!! Thanks alot!
I assume this is still incomplete ROM and you need to do lots of tweaks? Just couple of things!
- I don't see 3D gallery anymore and can't sync with Picasa!! I have lots of pics on Picasa!
- Linpack is averaging inbetween 2 and 3 MFLOPs and it used to average around 4.7!
That's all I could catch for now! I am sure it will get better, will use GPS in the morning and let you know if it has any issues!
Thanks again for all your work! Good night!

oh, lol, i removed jit completely, i replaced 3d gallery with the 2d one as its way more stable imo. If u want jit in this i could add it back in for ur benchmarks, but imo thats all its good for until froyo.
so essentially, u are currently running the most bleeding edge version of darchdroid. lol
I feel honored darchy! LOL so with 2d gallery I can't integrate Picasa? I never had any issues with 3d gallery!
I would be glad to test it or run this version if you can add jit and 3d gallery! LOL let me know! I'm kinda addicted to both of those along with your ROM. You do great job!

Dude, you can push 3d gallery and enable jit on your own. C'mon, guy.
I searched the whole internet, but can't find any solution for my problem.
I have auto brightness enabled, but it only works one way. It's highering the brightness but then, when light conditions are darker it doesn't dim the screen down but it does turns off the lights of the capacitive buttons and keyboard...
How can I get this device lowering the brightness automatically?
Can someone help?
I am running stock, deodexed, rooted 5.7.894
Thanks in advance!
Try running a different ROM. I think the 894 was the original ROM.
Sent from my XT883 using xda app-developers app
5.5.959 was the original, IIRC. 5.7.894 was a leak that was never pushed OTA. 5.7.906 and 5.6.890 are the only pushed OTAs, 5.7.906 being the latest. Go Settings > About Phone > Software Update and DL the 906 OTA.
Erhm, ... thanks for your advice, but it's not my intention to update the firmware due to many mods I applied which are not working anymore in 5.7.906, the Atrix Camera and FM Radio app for example...
Can at lease anybody confirm this auto brightness behavior?
Autobrightness works fine for me. Rooted stock 906 on XT862.
Do you have something covering the light sensor in the upper right? To the left of the camera and LED?
Autobrightness works for me too, BUT its just highering the brightness, it's not dimming when it gets darker.

I guess I should have been more clear - autobrightness does both on my phone, so the functionality is running fine on my stock, rooted 906. In fact, it has always been fine on my phone.
Since you are rooted, you could try a few things: install Clockwork Recovery, or Safestrap recovery, if you have not already, and run a Nandroid backup and then try a factory reset to see if that solves the issue (if it does not, that was the point for the backup; you can then Nandroid restore back to where you are now.) Or you can use Titanium Backup to backup your third party apps, try a factory reset and them use TiBu to restore apps to get your apps set up again and see if that solves the problem.
Not that it helps you much but I've ways had issues with auto brightness on my phone, regardless of rom. Fastboot flashes don't fix it either.
And now that I think about it I don't think mine dims either.
Sent from my XT860 using xda premium
Well, that's what I was thinking, too. The last time I really know that auto dimming worked was on my Milestone 2. I did as doogald sugessted but it doesn't work.
I have put so much time and effort into modding my 5.7.894 that I won't upgrade to anything, except of ICS if it's ever becoming stable.
But I appreciate any hint or information sharing.
Thanks.
notice the scratch-retardant screen cover that you affixed. the transmittance of some screen covers are low. so, i digged a pore on the screen cover above the light sensor
Sent from my XT883 using xda app-developers app
cstn makes a good point. Some GNex users have reported issues with proxy sensors detecting the screen protector and never waking the phone, so the same may be happening with your light sensor in some form. If there is a screen protector covering it, I would trim that area away and test.
Same problem with rooted stock Bell XT860
I have been having the same problems with auto-brightness getting brighter, but never dimming. I am currently running what appears to be a stock Bell 5.2.476 (2.3.6) which was rooted before I bought the phone. I installed a third party application to do the brightness control as a workaround, but so far it is a bit annoying about changing the brightness levels excessively. I suspect that some fine tuning will fix that.

Sensor works but won't dim
I have the eclipse rom and it won't dim either. It's supposedly .906 and I even tried adjusting the levels too. My car app will auto dim when it's running.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235212
Does anybody know what code is responsible for auto-dimming? Is there a System app that does it? My phone is rooted, so it would be nice if I could find a way to replace whatever is doing the auto-dimming with something that works. I have an app that does it, but it takes over the brightness completely, so there doesn't appear to be an easy way to manually set the brightness temporarily while it is running
I always wonder how open an operating system is when such settings are NOWHERE to find, wheather it's the speaker volume, or brightness settings, or lockscreen or anything. It's almost like Symbian.
Well, hate mode off
I'd also LOVE to know where these settings are stored.
My Car Dock Home app will auto dim when it's running and only when docked, so maybe it will help someone that knows a lot on how these apps work. My wife's droid 3(same as mine) does not auto dim either and she's is running official .906 rooted and I tried several roms (Eclipse 2.2.2, Eclipse 3.0, Liberty 2.0) and no luck.

The OS is quite open in most cases, given sufficient time I could find it in the source code. The biggest openness-deficiency is in the area of device drivers. Generally the source code for drivers for things like cameras is not available, which is why it is quite common to see new ROMs with broken camera support
Since I can't post on a developers thread I figure I would post it here. This is my setting for the droid 3, I modified the Lux (config_autoBrightnessLevels) values for the first few to allow the phone to dim completely in the dark. A lux value of 2 is when you completely cover the light sensor, so I set it to 3. Lux of 10 was with my small lamp on, 20 was with my ceiling light and outdoor but not in the sun is about 4000. I still can't figure out what setting causes the dimming, but I don't think it's in the framework-res.apk

Can someone post a video of the notification led blinking? Or at least tell me if it is a typical worthless pinhead HTC led? The leds on HTC phones usually suck
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
It is indeed a tiny full-color LED; it's also the same LED that the phone uses to let you know when it's charging, low-battery, or completely charged. It defaults to being turned off for Android notifications, but it's simple to turn it on.

LiteFlow Lite doesn't work. I made sure all of the settings were correctly checked and I've used the app before. I'm thinking that we'll either need root or CM/AOSP/AOKP before we can modify it. On a side note, it really is a nice LED. Just a little pin-sized light. Blinking green for a notification in the upper right hand corner. It stays red while charging and does not blink, even if you have a notification waiting to be seen.

Just tested it with root (I had also tested it before rooting). It was making my led do all kinds of crazy crap. It was blinking erratically, rather than the calm, normal pulse PLUS it would not accept any of the color changes for the other types of notifications. It would not do the tests either. I changed all of the settings around and nothing seemed to matter. So I would call this a big, fat FAIL. Is there another app out there that is known to play nicely with HTC phones?

I tried a few different apps that all failed in the same way. No color changes and totally erratic blinking. I am rooted and it didn't help one bit.
I got Lightflow working but this phone only allows Green, Orange and Deep Orange as choices so you have to change the notifications you want to use to use those colors or it doesn't do anything. It is working fine now but it is missing the blinking options that my Nexus 4 had which is a bummer. I have it set so only texts, Facebook messages, and google talk chats use the lights.

I enabled root and direct modes within the app and enabled the LED in Screen settings in the Settings app and then I manually went into the notifications I wanted to enable and chose the color I wanted to use again. It was working fine but with such limited color options it seemed kind of pointless to me especially since I use a Sony Smartwatch so I'm getting all of the notifications there already.
I think I stumbled across the solution to this today:
Settings > Display > LED Active
Seems to work!
Yes it works. I take green Led in whatsapp and it works...

so... I've had my N6 for about month and a half and last week decided to root, weird thing was, I DID NOT KNOW that there was a LED light on it ... while using stock, the LED light did not come on at all and only when i installed CM12 that i seen the light.
I want to go back to stock but i want the LED light for notifications. has anybody encountered this problem? how do i fix it ?
Stock does not support LED.
For me this is not an issue, why would I want an LED always flashing to show me I have notifications.
Went through the trouble of installing CM12 and you want stock?
Unless something was missing in CM12 like flaky bluetooth I would stick with custom ROMs

Yes it does require root and you need the paid version of the app. I cannot believe the N6 didn't come stock with led notifications and double tap to wake. Beside the washed out/ way over saturated screen, I think I might return mine to ATT before my 2 weeks are over
Can't complain... Its huge but I kinda like it
Yes I was shocked at the light too.
Definitely should be enabled out of the gate.
Unlike the TINY one behind the HTC speaker grille with very limited viewing angle this one is bright and actually better IMO than Samsung's.

One thing to note is that for now with Light Flow the only colors for the LED are red green or blue. Or if you manually change the color with the built in light flow mixer you can make strange combinations with the top half of the LED being one color and the bottom half another.
Hey there, I am using the XZ1C on the latest stock pie build and there is annoying feature where I do not know how to disable it. When I am in more bright situations the contrast seems to adjust that I should the screen better but for me it is just annoying. The blacks get a really light gray. I have auto-brightness disabled. Anyone here with the same struggle or a possible fix?
Thanks in advance
