16gb on Verizon? - Moto X Q&A

I'm really itching to upgrade from the S3, and the Moto X is an amazing device which seems to offer the most fluid user experience I've found on today's top tier devices currently available from vzw. The only aspect of this device that keeps me from pulling the trigger is the fact that you get only 16gb of internal storage with no Micro SD slot. On my S3 I opted for the 32gb and have a 64gb micro SD card. Now, to be fair I only use a small fraction of my SD card but my internal storage only has about 7 gb free. I would love to give the Moto X a try but I just don't know if I can go without the available memory I've been used to... plus, when I upgrade I'll likely lose my unlimited data plan I've been holding onto. I'm just hoping that VZW gets the Moto Maker website access soon so we can opt for at least 32 gigs. Anyone else finding the onboard memory lacking?

In my opinion 16gb is just not enough storage for smartphones these days. I have the 32gb motomaker one and I only have 7 gigs left (out of 26 available) and that's only because I left out a big portion of my music. I think there's only 12gb or so available to the user on the 16gb version so keep that in mind. That said, I would rather have the 16gb version of the Moto X and just learn to work around it than any other device currently available, storage notwithstanding.

with all the cloud based solutions pretty much for everything i need, more than enough for me.

The problem with cloud storage is that many require a subscription fee of some sort, and you're using data to access the cloud data if not on Wi-Fi... and in order to upgrade I lose unlimited data so it's kind of a catch 22.
Are there any free cloud options that are worth a damn? What I use my external memory for currently is music, audio books (I commute for work) and other media. I just hate that flash storage is SO inexpensive, yet the manufacturers want to limit you to 16... makes no sense. 32gb should be the minimum imho...

Totally agree.. I'm sure it's done on purpose to get you paying for the cloud services

Well if you don't mind paying full retail - VZW has the developer version with 32GBs. But it is $700 after tax and shipping. It is also out of stock.
If you want to keep unlimited data there are some Xs available on Swappa.com
Of my 16GBs I have 9.5 available still. I don't really see storage as a problem.
And don't forget- if you buy a new X from VZW you get 50GBs of free Google Drive storage (for 2 years).
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk 4

I think I'm just going to have to wait until either Moto Maker goes live for Verizon, or the Nexus 5 is released... just have to wait and see which ultimately offers the better storage options. I've read on the interwebs that by the time the Nexus comes out, the Moto X will be $100 less... time will tell.

How important is 16GB?

I'm poised to order my Nexus 7, but I'm torn on which to get. Anyone out there running out of space on the 8GB? with all the cloud stuff, is there a need for the extra 8GB? How much space is left for files on the 8GB version? is the extra 8GB worth $50?
5.91GB total space on my 8gb.
I'll personally just be using OTG.
I would suggest getting it if you can afford it.
90% of the time, I use it at home; but if I'm going on a plane, or the subway, or any kind of trip where I can't count on a strong WiFi or tetherable cellular signal, I don't also want to be forced to deal with size limitations that I could have very well avoided.
The way I looked at it was play store is $213 shipped for 8gb. Other retailers have the 16gb for $249 and free shipping so in essence its $36 more vs $50. That $14 saved can go towards accessories.

With all my desired apps installed,a nandroid backup, a few games including mini motor, FF3 & dead trigger I have 4 gb of space left on my 8 gb. I didnt mention music or movies because they are all in the cloud.
Go for 16 gig bro and avoid hassles... a good games like Nova 3 takes up almost 3 gigs, that alone almost fills up an 8 gigs storage.

wtf 3 gigs... Nova 3 takes up 1.7gigs.
I could survive with 8GB as I don't store anything locally like music or movies.
Depends if you are a big gamer, I got the 16 gig it was about 270 out the door at Sam's club so 213 from the play store sounds like a good deal. I live in California though so I would have had to pay sales tax so an 8 gb would have been like 230 for me from the play store.

If you intend to play movies/TV shows/videos on the thing without wifi our tethering (personally I'd never tether for video playback but whatever) then in my opinion 16 is a must. HD movies rented from Google play look amazing on this thing and will suck up about 1.8 gigs for a 2 hour movie. I can totally see myself loading a few high definition movies and watching them on a long flight without the need to transfer files via otg cable or wireless transfer.
Sent from my SCH-I905 using Tapatalk 2
I preordered the 8 gig and have second guessed myself the last few weeks. I decided today to refuse my 8 gig shipment and bought a 16 gig in store. I figure I may swell save $20 on shipping and use it towards the upgrade. I don't regret it at all. Especially since Google screwed up the shipping.

I weighed the pros and cons but in the end decided that having more space than I needed was better than not having enough.
If you can afford the extra 50 bucks, the 16g is a no-brainer. If you can't then should you really be spending $225(shipped) on a toy to begin with? Probably not

If you can afford it get the 16. Having said that I have never used more than 5 or 6 on any of the devices I have owned, I pads, playbooks, transformer prime, xoom, gtab ...

Down 4GB of space and I haven't even finished downloading all my games yet... For me the 16 GB was a no brainer - nothing worse then having to pick and choose what you can take with you. On the other hand, if I buy one for my parents I'll probably go with the 8GB model.
i would just...
1. Root
2. Download stickmount (free)
3. Buy an OTG adapter
Then download 30-50 movies onto a thumb drive, my whole music collection on another thumb drive.
Then plugin whatever one i wanted to use. No need to transfer files.. its like an external drive i can view or listen from.. even if no wifi is around..
I don't think alot of people understand what an OTG cable is here or something..

I know what OTG is and does the point is that is external

Used Galaxy Note 1 or new LG Nexus 4?

Anyone with the Galaxy Note 1 thinking about switching to the Nexus 4? I'm debating whether to get a used Note 1 or a new Nexus 4. Would you give up 0.5" screen size and SD card slot?
LG nexus 4
Memory Card slot No
Internal 8/16 GB storage, 2 GB RAM
other specs are appealing.. but then Note 2 has the same and No Spen .... no way
i cant live with that.. too less of storage
Nexus 4 looks really awesome but the major disadvantage is that it doesnt have a memory card slot and has just 8/16gb internal storage(no 32gb)
If the storage capacity is not a problem, then i suggest you go with nexus 4

Disadvantages of Nexus 4:
1) No external memory card slot
2) Non-removable battery (u cant use extended battery if you want)
3) 2100mAh battery is too less for such a powerful phone
4) No S-pen
So, a used Note 1 wins in my opinion..
If the battery is non-removeable then u should buy note 1...

I strongly disagree mister. You need to use a nexus device to decide whether its crappy or not.
Fast software update (no need to wait months like sammy users do)
Wireless charging
$300 phone --2GB ram, S4 Snapdragon CPU
I personally have a 32GB micro SD card and still have 19GB free (I have movies, songs, enormous amount of pics)
I have 2 extra samsung batteries (but I never use them, although I watch 3hrs movie every day+plus chatting, music).
People need to sit down and think/analize what they're going to use their phone for. Ask yourself, do you really need an extra battery? Are you a heavy user? Do you currently carry a spare battery in your pocket?
External battery charger can be very useful during travel
Memory can be handled by usb OTG or cloud storage. I personally have a lot of useless crap in my phone that I dont even use nowadays.
So no, it's not crappy IMHO.
I have a 32gb micro SD and I have only 5gb free. 8 or 16 gb is really small particularly if you play big games like six guns or modern combat. The small storage size is really a problem for me.

I think the nexus 4 is serious contender with the specs on offer with this device. I know it's the only device that would tempt me away from Samsung phones. Downside it is made by lg but looking at the reviews and specs of lg optimus g (from which nexus 4 is coming from) is very appealing for me a must say.

Benefits, update cycle, new vanilla roms fast. Good developer forum, any nexus device will have a good following. Hardware specs ok, but screen will be an issue.
Downside, no expandable memory, deal breaker for me, I use a 32GB card plus my 11gb internal and am almost maxxed for music and video, just couldn't settle for 11gb max usable storage. Fixed battery, the battery wears out, these days probably after a year, fixed battery is another deal breaker for me.

I think the Nexus 4 is a really good deal. For $350 you're getting the most out of Android. If I didn't buy my Note a month ago, I would have most definitely gotten the Nexus 4.
If you need more than 16gb of space, you can always get the 16gb phone, which is more than enough for apps and games. For extra storage, use Dropbox (2gb free), Google Drive (5gb free), and SkyDrive (7gb free). Both have apps that work perfectly on Android.
If you want even more space, do all the dropbox referrals using virtual machines. Each referral will earn you 500mb, for up to a limit of 16gb. Which means you only need to do this 32 times to get the free 16gb.
You can also use the camera upload feature to earn 3gb for free.
For even more space, you can earn a couple of gb from doing the "Simple Tasks" (which is a dropbox getting started guide).
If you're a university student, right now there's an event called the Great Space Race (the more students from your school is using dropbox, the more space you get) that earns you up to 25gb for up to two years (you'll probably be using a different phone after two years, and in 2015, phones are probably gonna have 32gb/64gb base).
I use both of these services on my 16gb Note with no SD card. I earned all possible free storage on dropbox and now I'm running on 39.88gb cloud storage. All my music and videos is stored in the cloud which is convenient.

What you're expressing is kind of pointless, there's a limit to external storage in cloud terms muchly based on size and compatibility.. There is no reasonable chance that anyone would transfer a movie over cloud, just not data forgivable yet. It's fine for small programme info and data, but not for big apps transfers or movie files, until 4G of course.

Do you mean a file size limit? If so, I haven't had a problem with that with Dropbox. I've uploaded 13gb HD mkv movies with no problem. with almost 40gb of free storage I have no problems with storing data. I agree that transfering the files and then listen/watch is time consuming. Sometimes you won't even have enough space on your phone to store the temporary files. That's why I always stream off the cloud and even on 3G speeds, streaming an HD movie is no problem.
Data limits.... expensive plans. You don't always have Access to stream like airplanes. It doesn't help with games either. To me there is no excuse to lose features on newer phones. My vote goes for Note
Sent from the Mighty Note International!
As long as you're on an unlimited data plan there's nothing to worry about. That said, I agree that lack of a memory card slot is inconvenient, but maybe Google's trying to promote their Google Drive? I don't like SD cards because it's confusing where everything belongs. Anyway I love the idea of cloud storage and I'm probably biased to it. Both phone are good choices, but if I were to choose one, I'd go for the Nexus 4.
Same thing explained here, but for for me memory card slot is important until & unless they provide 64 or 128GB on device
I have 64gb microSD and it is more than half full synced with my Dropbox files for areas without data reception.
Internal memory is required for apps, some have large space requirements.
So.... It depends on your usage.

For all of you guys complaining about lack of storage, if it's that much of an issue, you can just use MicroSD or USB OTG. (At least when it is available for 4.2, which with the dev community it should be in no time) Keep a connector on your keychain or something along those lines.

Extra Google drive might make people happy

It will be cool for Google to give away like 50gb drive storage for thoes who preorder or buy n4..... what a better way to promote their cloud....

Nope, I do not argue for an SDSlot. I do want 32gb though. Cloud is slow. Plus it uses more battery and requires a decent monthly data cap which many people do not have access to.
I love local storage, just as many other consumers do.. They should've offered 16GB & 32GB initially and offer a pre-order for a 64GB version if enough people signed up.. All priced accordingly. I'll pay for it if they make it, just as many others would. I mean I could always keep my S3 WITH LTE, Micro SD (80gigs total now), and a removable battery... Nexus customers know what they want. They choose a Nexus device for a reason.. Otherwise they could be one of the mindless sheep throwing $$$ at Apple.

I just bought a 64GB memory card a week ago
I have 20 gb of music on google music. 5 gb of google drive space for docs and books. 5 gb dropbox, 5 gb sugarsync and 5 gb ubuntu one for other files. and a 64 gb usb-otg for video. With that i think i am pretty good. I think i'll be buying the 8gb version and saving some money since tmo looks like they will be selling the 16 gb version for a msrp of $599.99. I wont be gouged $60 in tax. Thats bull****!
I also have a nexus 7 which the usb-otg is/was for and that goes with me everywhere.
They can give us whatever amount of Drive storage they want, it would be as useful as giving somebody replacement pistons for their new car.
The Drive mobile app is so uncapable of even doing the most basic tasks, that it is comepletely useless. You can't even move files to the location you want, cant add pictures to your gallery, can only download one file at a time, and only access them from the drive app.. Imagine looking at an album and having to go back each time after you viewed a picture, to download and view the next... The same with music, have fun opening each song on its own, and not being able to copy them to your music player.
Drive is just a pity.

Not when it's Tons of Music, and Nandroid backups. People with data caps can't really afford to stream when they're away from wifi. More storage in the form of ondoard flash or a micro sd slot is a must for MANY people, and will remain to be a deal breaker for alot of people. If Google wants to compete, they need to at least add 32GB and a 64GB while pricing them accordingly. Tons of people bought the Int. GNex 16GB for $500+... I agree. I had a 16 gig demo X from Verizon (perk of my job) before purchasing one. The 11gig free on the 16gig model was not enough for my apps, music, pictures and taking video of my son when needed (rather than always carrying a digital camera with me too). I purchased a Dev Edition just so I could get a 32gig model (since it was the only way to get 32gig on VZW at the time).
It might cost a little more up front, but since there is no microSD slot, you can't add space later if you need it!!!
In the past people could justify by saying "if 16 isn't enough in the future should I need it, I'll just sell this on ebay/craigslist/etc and it will cover the cost of a new phone." But with Moto lowering the X's retail price like they have, you can't count on future resale value anymore.
it depends if you plan on storing a lot of apps, music, pics, and videos. If you don't do any of that, then the 16 gb version should be adequate.
Totally depends on the user. I only store about 3gb music on my phone and I don't really play games, so 16 is enough for me. But most seem to need 32.

I went with the 32 GB dev edition since I didn't think 16 GB was enough. My S4 has 16 GB internal and it's good for most things, except if you want to store a lot of HD games, a few nandroid backups and/or Google Music. If you don't like the color of the dev edition, you can swap the backs relatively easily, just search around here.

Anyone waiting for a 32GB S5?

I'm holding out hope to see if there will be a release of the 32GB version of the S5. My HTC One X has been driving me crazy with bad battery life! I'm so ready to just buy the S5 but trying to be patient and wait out the 32GB model. Just curious if Anton DE else is waiting or if you're all just going for it?

Personally, I never felt the need for anything over 16gb. All my previous phones have been 16gb's and I never even came close to filling them up...and that was with music and pics on the internal storage. This time, I have a 32gb SD card for all of that...so I'm set. :good:
It all depends on your personal needs. I know those who were wanting the 32gb model were/are hoping it'll be released in the 2 week return time-frame, but I doubt it, unfortunately. It definitely does suck that they screw over those people.
I'm waiting. Thus will be my work phone, which means I have to buy through my company and can only get a new phone every 18 months.i want to make sure I have room for apps, mail, etc... My S3 only stays at about 1G free through regular pruning.
I just bought a 64GB memory card, problem solved. If I somehow use all that space I know the phone will support up to 128... so no use in waiting honestly and I didn't. Using my S5 now.

You do realize that the real reason most people wait is because apps really don't move to the SD card anymore right? That means your stuck with the 7 or 8 gigs you have on your phone no matter if you bought yourself a SD card or not for your apps and various other stuff that need to physically be on your phones memory.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
Yup 16 gig is definitely not enough. 32 gig is decent but Samsung has so much features/bloat the phone only really comes with a limited amount of memory. I remember having the 32 gig s4 and even though it was 32 it still wasn't enough memory. I put a bunch of music on my phone.

You do realize that the real reason most people wait is because apps really don't move to the SD card anymore right? That means your stuck with the 7 or 8 gigs you have on your phone no matter if you bought yourself a SD card or not for your apps and various other stuff that need to physically be on your phones memory.

The phone comes with 10.5 GB of memory on board. An SD card could hold all your pictures, music, documents, and even some apps. That's plenty of space on your phone for apps.

Thanks for all the replies, I believe I'm going to just hang in there with my crappy battery life until the 32GB shows up.

My thoughts exactly. The only reason I could see someone needing more space is for the big games...and maybe a select few of the bigger GPS apps. I never install any games, so that doesn't affect me and Google Maps works perfectly fine for me. Different strokes for different folks, though
If your in the same situation as me and do not have an upgrade available, then it's already expensive enough to get a 16. Much more cost effective to get 16 and ExSD.

You may want to look at the specs of the Z2 then.

Hi,
I meant to say LOOK at the Z2. Not saying it's a better phone, not yet anyway.
Prices are all similar with the top phones. I'd also be interested in a GPE of the S5.
Or the new LG coming out later in summer, who knows, I have till August to end
my term with ATT.

Relax. You said you wanted more than 16GB storage. I'm just saying you might want to look at the specs.
Is the Z2 supposed to be coming to AT&T?

I'm holding out hope to see if there will be a release of the 32GB version of the S5. My HTC One X has been driving me crazy with bad battery life! I'm so ready to just buy the S5 but trying to be patient and wait out the 32GB model. Just curious if Anton DE else is waiting or if you're all just going for it?

Yessir, I am. I have a 32gb S4, so the S5 better come out with it at a minimum. I would love a 128gb internal...
When I got my S4 I waited for the 32Gb version. My 16Gb S3 almost always had the sdcard full and I would have to delete stuff sometimes for Roms and such to download. I personally would not go back to a 16Gb version.
My biggest reason is this. If you get root and put on a ROM (hopefully in the future) and want to have 1 nandroid backup then that backup is about 4+Gb's. Not everything works best when put on a a external sdcard , the read/write speeds are a hendrance even with a class 10 card. I do have to say that I did a lot of making themes and tearing apart Roms so I could theme them. So I would fill up my internal and external sdcard pretty fast. Let alone if I was putting movies and music on it as well. I personally am waiting for a T-Mobile S5 with 32Gb's...

FWIW, completely moved in with all my apps, and a couple new ones, 64 Gb SD card on board with media, and the 16 Gb device reports 9.17 Gb available internally (down from just under 11 Gb as shipped) and 31.08 Gb available on SD card.
I consider myself a median-to-light app installer, and I'm aggressive about uninstalling stuff I'm no longer using.
If you're someone who'se "phat" on apps then you'll want more, but for the rest of us I can't see how it's not livable with the SD card.
Brought my S5 back yesterday because I'm waiting for the 32Gb version (trying the M8 to pass away the time). I've been friends with the at&t mgr for couple years, he said AT&T will be getting the 32gb and a gold version...didn't say when though.
If the 32gb version doesn't come out in a couple weeks or so, I'll go back and get the 16gb. I'm just taking a chance that AT&T and company are pulling the same stunt with the S5 as they did with the S4.
