[Q] kfhd 7" cm10.1 errors! - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not sure what is going on but I'm having the following problems and would appreciate any input.
1. Headphones don't always work despite kindle recognizing that they are plugged in (switching to headphones audio profile, and opening stock audio player etc.) and sound is instead routed through the speakers. Sometimes can be fixed by rebooting.
2. Video play back is iffy. When looking up movies through any file browser thumbnails will sometimes not appear, this is the first sign video isn't going to work. When attempting to play any video the player reads the video length as 0:00:00 and won't play. I get an error that says "sorry this video can't be played" or something similar depending on which app I'm using. Sometimes fixed by rebooting.
3. Erased saved game file / erased home screens. Sometimes after rebooting in an attempt to remedy one or both of the above faults I will get the cm notification screen that says "optimizing apps". After full boot most of my 5 home screens will be empty (except for two apps, oddly enough), and my progress for some games is erased. /data/data/ com.blahblahblah
Even if I could find a setting or schedule in titanium backup to "backup all user app data" or a similar app I'd be happy.
I'm not ruling out user error and am in fact hoping that is the problem. I don't want to make the first post super long so I'll post screen shots of settings as I'm asked about them.
Thank you.

I'm not sure, but I think that CM10.1 on the Fire HD is a known issue, due to issues with the kernel.

I'm using this kernel. http://i.imgur.com/thu00Y4.png Is there one that would work better? Preferably one with USB otg support.

I think that there's only two or three kernels available--the stock OS one, and @Maromi has uploaded a couple here. However, I think they are only designed for any ROM with Android 4.2.x.
And none of them support USB OTG. @Hashcode has it on his to-do list, but it's not an easy thing to do.
Hope this helped
EDIT: From your screenshot, it looks like you are running @Hashcode's kernel for his CM10.1 build.

It does help, thank you. I'm running an android 4.2.2 os. (See above screenshot) I want to ensure I'm not making another newb mistake and bricking my kfhd again. (I already did it once... RE: fastboot hell) In your opinion, would it be safe to install one of maromi's kernels?
Is it safe to run the stock kernel with cm10.1?
Glad to hear that Hashcode is working on USB otg support. It was a MAJOR reason I rooted and installed a non stock os.
Edit: I am indeed running Hashcode's 3.0.50+ kernel.

Glad I could help! And yes, bricking any Kindle is a pain in the... well, you know. As for installing kernels, I've never done anything like that, so I can't give you my opinions or advice on it. I do know, however, that like ROMs, you can flash them in TWRP.

Don't forget to make a backup in TWRP. That way, if something goes wrong, you have a working restore point you can fall back on (I learned this the hard way).

The thread you suggested http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273172 doesn't have any kernels in the first post and the two links to kernels in the second post have broken links. Any suggestions on where to find an alternative to Hashcode's 3.0.50+ or the stock one?
Also, newb question here. How do I make a backup in twrp? I've only ever used it to flash ROMs and wipe cache and dalvik cache.

No kernels huh? Well. Uh... I can't help you there. Sorry
As for making backups, I can actually help with that. Boot into TWRP. From the main menu, select "Backup." Check-mark every box, and then simply swipe. TWRP will begin backing up your stuff. Just make sure you have a good amount of free space on your SD card. A backup of everything on my Kindle takes up about 3.5 GB. And that's with compression enabled.

Can't get TWRP to install...keeps going to bootloop

I have tried the steps I found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
Twice I have completed it, rebooted and gone into a bootloop. I've managed to restore the Kindle but I don't want to keep doing it with the same results. I am sure I am doing it right (as laid out in the thread), I just can't seem to do it. Any ideas why this is happening?

That worked! Thanks a lot, no idea why the other one didn't want to work. Made my first backup with TWRP but not sure what to do next. Just done it to tinker. Any ideas?
Now anything. You could install a custom ROM, tweak packs, themes, anything flashable through TWRP. Just make sure whatever you flash is compatible with your Kindle.
If you want to flash something cool just to see how TWRP works, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1747224. It's a nodded version of Google Now for ICS ROMs (although voice doesn't work for it).
And props to you for mailing a backup they're quite handy if you like to tinker (especially in event of a soft brick).
And you're welcome

[Q] KF7" Refuses to boot past "Blue" Logo

Hello, I have a Kindle Fire HD 7" running the downgraded 7.2.3 from KFFA. Then I used Hash's TWRP 2.6.3.1 + 2nd Bootloader thread to get Stock with TWRP but for whatever reason I can't seem to install a ROM that will boot past the "Blue" Logo.
My screen doesn't do the "White haze" that others have mentioned.
Still boots into recovery allowing for wipes + installs.
I have reverted back to 100% stock then made my way back to stock + TWRP three times now, and have looked rather extensively through any threads even somewhat relative to my own problem.
I've been using the Factory fastboot cable to get into fastboot if that makes any difference.
I have downloaded the GAPPs and ROM twice, and I have a very stable connection that hasn't given me issues before.
ROM is the same as from Hash's thread for TWRP + 2nd Bootloader. (cm-10.2-20131115-UNOFFICIAL-tate)
Have tried my cable from my Note 2, Captivate, Epic 4G Touch, and stock KFHD 7" cable as well as the factory fastboot cable.
Kinda stuck, have gone round like this for about 4 hours + now and I must say, the KFHD 7" has been the biggest pain out of any of my Androids by far xD Great tab though.
Any help would be much appreciated. I could always just run stock, but, I'd really like to have CM 4.3 or 4.4 based on my device.
Thanks!
If I left out anything, please, let me know and I will respond ASAP.

You have no OS and that's why it won't boot past TWRP. Go into TWRP and adb sideload a ROM onto TWRP and flash it and boot into system. You should probably read a bit before just posting. The link answered your question.

If I restore my stock rooted OS via TWRP it boots up just fine . . .
The problem I have is after flashing any ROM's I can't get past the blue logo.
But I'll try what you are saying just for kicks.

You need to check the zip and make sure it did not get corrupted during the download. Goo.img is updating their servers and downloads can be corrupted. Try downloading from the crackflasher mirror. Make sure it is the ROM for your year and model Kindle Fire HD. You also need to update your TWRP to 2.6.3.1 right away, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848 Before you flash, factory "swipe" then flash ROM then wipe Dalvik/CACHE then boot into OS. Just drag and drop ROM onto internal SD card before booting into TWRP.

Oh boy lol, let me just correct everywhere you went wrong, cause I've tried to be nice, but I can't let you get away with not even reading the OP.
"You never said you could access an OS." ---> "I could always just run stock"
"You simply said you could not get past TWRP" ---> "Then I used Hash's TWRP 2.6.3.1 + 2nd Bootloader thread to get Stock with TWRP but for whatever reason I can't seem to install a ROM that will boot past the "Blue" Logo." (PS: Being stuck at the "Blue logo" is much different then not being able to boot and being booted into TWRP.)
"You need to check the zip and make sure it did not get corrupted during the download." ---> "I have downloaded the GAPPs and ROM twice, and I have a very stable connection that hasn't given me issues before."
"Goo.img is updating their servers and downloads can be corrupted. Try downloading from the crackflasher mirror." ---> That was where I downloaded from the second+ time I downloaded the ROM.
"Make sure it is the ROM for your year and model Kindle Fire HD." ---> "ROM is the same as from Hash's thread for TWRP + 2nd Bootloader. (cm-10.2-20131115-UNOFFICIAL-tate)"
"You also need to update your TWRP to 2.6.3.1 right away," ---> "Then I used Hash's TWRP 2.6.3.1 + 2nd Bootloader thread to get Stock with TWRP"
So, I just copied and pasted all that from you post, and my OP.
So, let me quote you again from another post you made in my thread.
"You should probably read a bit before just posting." READ THE OP BEFORE TRYING TO HELP MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA!!! x'D
Thanks for attempting to help though, much appreciated.

Well, now you're just flat out being an ass. I've been rooting my phone ever since my G1, definitely not a noob, and I wouldn't have asked for help if I didn't need it and if I hadn't already searched a ton.
I've been here longer then you, just an FYI. Also, your grammar is horrid.
I really wish trolls like you weren't allowed on XDA but man, can't control you guys.
PS: Don't get mad and call me a noob just cause you can't read x'D
EDIT: Linear has been added to my ignore list so if he does reply I don't have an urge to argue with him some more.
Biggest problem here Linear is that you really, really need to learn how to read an OP before posting help.
Thanks!

I give back to the community by offering free Android and iPhone modding in my area, and free support via text and email.
Plus I make sure to tell them to check out the Dev's thread or website and to consider donating to the people who make the magic happen.
The only service I make people pay for is electronic repairs which is a flat rate of $20 + customer buys the parts.
So I think I give back to the community at least a little seeing as I have at the least 20+ people a month asking for help cause some idiot installed a unstable ROM on their phone and 4G vanished or other problems.
By the way, since we are laying our d*cks on the table, might I add that boasting about how many "Likes" you have or "Thanks" isn't something to be proud of, you earned them yes, but don't shove that in other peoples faces, that's just childish.
Thanks again for trying to help.

Odd
We have another person that can't get a restore to take. I've always wondered if it was a formatting issue for him...
But if you were to hand me this kindle I would restore from the restore tool not kffa then I would follow hash codes install 2nd boot loader + twrp thread .

Yes, 2012 KFHD 7" (Tate)
Yes, TWRP works fine.
No, I got Hellfire to flash, but so far nothing else will flash 0.o :/
Also, I did all my restores from KFFA, BUT, I did do a original backup via ADB and did a restore via Fastboot thinking it might have been KFFA but no go still.
And yes, the thread kinda goes to poop cause I was already kinda upset cause this has been the most frastrating Android to work with, and then the pressure got compounded just cause I decided to ask for help :/
If any of this info helps, please let me know, I believe Hellfire is CM 10.1 . . . I believe, that's off the top of my head though.
Thanks!
To be honest I've only installed kinology... Wife won't let me get rid of the kindle os. I didn't really needed kinology but I wanted to update and did not want to reset it up again. He basically ran a neater version of what I was doing.

[Q] [Help!] kindle fire HD won't boot past first words saying Kindle Fire

I've been living (mostly) happily with my Kindle Fire HD 7" running BAM rom (the best rom ever) for a couple months now. I decided to upgrade to android 4.4. I went into TWRP to install the new rom, but it wouldn't install, so I decided to flash one of my recoveries I had made in october and it flashed it fine, but when it boots up now it won't even get to the blue Kindle Fire anymore, it's just a boot loop BEFORE it.
When I first did this I had basically no clue what I was doing so I didn't make sure that fastboot was working and it doesn't seem to be working now.
Please HELP!!!!

I had this happen to me recently. It's easy to fix, with the right tools. You need a Fastboot/factory cable (whatever you want to call it) that has a short from pin 1 to 4, and Kindle Fire First Aide (In the KFHD 7" General forum).

You don't necissarily have to buy one--I built one myself (with a little help from my dad). All you need is a spare Micro-USB cable, a soldering iron, a small strand of wire, and a bit of battery power left on your Kindle. If you want to make the job a little bit easier, you can also get a Micro-USB breakout board from SparkFun.com. They're so much easier to solder to than a plain Micro-USB end.
Tutorial I used: http://chimerasaur.us/2012/01/making-a-kindle-fire-factory-cable/
For the breakout board: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10031
hey, was able to use a single wire to temporarily turn my normal usb to a fastboot usb:cyclops:, but now what do I do?
Don't know what's happening!!
I flashed a new system, boot, and recovery, but it still will boot up into boot loop. WHAT DO I DO (I do know how to do fastboot using -i 0x1949 so I know that's not my problem I'm thinking bootloader, but am not sure)
tried flashing bootloader...
Didn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a little irritated. downloading a program(forgot it's name) that's supposed to be able to flash the proper files to recover a fully bricked device, so I'm hopeful:fingers-crossed:

No such tool exists for the KFHD. What ever you're about to use is gonna hard brick your tablet. Use the system restore tool for Kindle Fire 7 and run the bat tool or push the images. Read the tutorial to get some background knowledge on this.

Ends up fixing it, bricking it again and fixing it again and am sending this from cm11 on my kindle fire

So what was the name of the program you used?
What was suggested earlier
After posting some of my previous posts, I realized I somehow had kffirstaid and used the restore option (but I personally like to manually do the fastboot commands, so I used it mainly to download the files and do it the first time) then redid the steps in this forum to get it to reinstall twrp and then flashed cm11.

[Q] Is there a 2nd-Bootloader and TWRP for 7.4.7?

I recently bought a KFHD 7 2013 with version 7.4.7 loaded on it. Root was fairly simple but after reading through Hashcode's and seokhun's threads it seems like the installation for Bootloader and TWRP is updated for up to 7.4.6. I was to install some custom roms to make this device into a full android tablet so does anyone have any info for kindles with 7.4.7?
Has anyone tried and succeeded using the methods in the tutorial for 7.4.6?
Is there another way for 7.4.7?
Please post up if you have any information.
OK put it this way, the current method does work for it, because the main thing to know is we have to downgrade the boot loader first anyways. You can also downgrade the is if you wanted. Anyways point being, the current freedomboot image more than likely doesn't work with that version, but here's the important little bit about that. The freedomboot doesn't really matter as long as you put the ROM and gapps on the device first or Don,t mind going through the trouble of pushing it onto the device with the adb command afterwards when it's in recovery. If the current freedom boot version isn't the same as the os version you typically will bootloop. So yea in short yes it works, just put the ROM you want to flash on the internal storage first so you can flash it without a hassle.

Oh I see the link was missing a hyphen! I need to go to this thread and use the tools provided there. Since Rootjunky.com posted up a really good video to get into fastboot mode I should have no problems getting this to work. After I downgrade I can easily follow seokhun's guide and have CM or PA installed in no time. Thanks a ton!

I thought the 2013 model of the HD 7" still only had root ability? Or is there more than one 2013 model? I've been checking the forums like 5 times a day, waiting for a way to get a custom rom on this damn thing. Did I miss something?

Actually I found out my model is 2012 because I have the front facing camera.

The 2013 version doesn't have any custom ROMs available.

Sorry - this is a known issue with no resolution. Best (only) option is to seek a courtesy exchange from Amazon if still within warranty.

so there's no way to fix it? Even with adb commands?

Unfortunately, no. There is a known but not fully understood interaction between CM and FlashFire which occasionally results in a CM boot loop. Also destroys access to the stock recovery partition which would be the normal fall back following a failed flash. ADB is not active and thus can not be used. Fastboot environment is crippled on Amazon devices with a locked bootloader. Factory/fastboot cables are ineffective. Sorry for the bad news ...
If you cannot get to Amazon recovery, it is bricked. If you can get to it, you can go back to stock and try it again.
From what I know, the problem with CM12 and flashfire is the location of the wipe, people do not place it on top of the order as specified on instructions before flashing.
If wrong, someone let me know...

Mispositioning of the Wipe action is certainly a problem but not the smoking gun as more than a handful of users are adamant they followed 'best practices' yet still ended up with a brick. These claims are supported by screenshots that show a reasonable FlashFire configuration just before execution. Also doesn't explain the bricks that occur when no wipe action is included.
I FIXED IT!!
All I did way follow this videohttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RQLoH-ahjy4 and it worked.

Aah - so the stock recovery could still be accessed! This is unusual with CM flash failures; I just assumed it was fully borked (note to self: never assume). So yea, recovery is both possible and fairly easy thanks to Root Junky's excellent video.
Question: what version of FlashFire did you use? This could be a major breakthrough if newer builds do not destroy access to stock recovery when a CM flash goes bad.

I was just wondering is there anyway to flash cm 12 successfully?
If you have 5.0.1 yes, with TWRP.
5.1.1 only flashfire and it is a gamble.
Both methods discuss at the CM12 ROM:

Agreed. The Fire Gods were looking over you on the last attempt as your device was recoverable. I see you recently posted a question about flashing Resurection-Remix. I have no direct experience with this rom so can't speak to reliability with FlashFire. I suggest looking at Nexus or SlimLP both of which have a modest track record of sucessful installs via FlashFire. Nexus holds a slight advantage IMO as GAaps and SuperSU are built-in so only one item to flash. There's a nice video (by Root Junky) in the OP. That said, SlimLP, Remix and others are fine alternatives. Nice to have choices.
For now stay away from CM. While the ROM is excellent unpredictable behavior with FlashFire is a spoiler.
