Hey everyone,
I don't know how you usually hold your mobile phones but when I'm using it with one hand I tend to support the weight with my fingers at the back and keep my pinkie at the bottom...
Due to complaints about the speaker position on the Z, Sony have now moved the speaker to the bottom of the device, which is okay (except when you are playing a landscape game with both hands on device, lol).
But the main problem is that the speaker grill is not flush with the frame, leaving the rough aluminum edges exposed. My pinkie is suffering, lol. I reckon I can cut cheese with this thing!
Has anyone else noticed? Is your speaker grill in line with the frame? How do you hold your phone with one hand?
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
yup. this has been bothering me too. i'm having to adjust my holding habits and putting my pinkies on either corner to not make them sore.
on a similar note i'm having to re-adjust my holding position when playing a game or something in landscape. as one of my hands usually cover the speaker muffling the sound
Here's a picture of the killer edge. It's even shaped like a knife!

Lol, I'm obviously making it sound a bit more extreme that what it is, but it's definitely uncomfortable, I felt it was sharp at first but kept using it and after a while my pinkie started to feel numb and I could see the mark where the phone was sitting. So yeah, I am also trying to find new ways of holding it without dropping it, lol.
Keep in mind that the Z1 is also a little bit heavier than the Z...

One handed, I hold my phone in exactly the same way you described with my pinky as support for the phone to sit on. It looks like I'll be getting my Z1 this weekend, so I'll let you know if it's uncomfy for moi as well.

Exactly the same here!
Yep, those edges are quite sharp as well, but perhaps they are like that to help the magnetic charger clip on...
But I wish they had done the speaker grill flush with the frame =( like Google Nexus One had above the screen! Nice and smooth so it didn't hurt the users' ears!
I'm curious to know how you hold it though, do you grab it from the sides without supporting it from the bottom?
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
I usually hold it kinda like this but on my right hand and one of the fingers is exactly mapped on the magnetic charging port. I still can't see how you hate the bottom maybe yours isn't softened enough
Oh I see. I hold it like this so I can reach the top corners:

I guess your finger is the dealbreaker there
I never relly put a finger under the phone, I don't know why though
Well, it's the only way I can reach the corners when using just one hand. Maybe my hands are not large enough for these new mobile phones, I need an upgrade, lol.
I guess the thicker black border doesn't help either...

I kinda got used to it by now, it's not like I've got a choice anyway unless I was to get another phone... But I've gotta say that coming from the XZ that bottom edge definitely feels a lot less comfortable, the way I hold it anyway.
I think it should be a rule for any aluminum phones that it's edges are sharpened out. It's on my wishlist for Z2 =)

I've always been annoyed by the horrible noise coming form my speakers, so I did some experimenting and it worked here's how to do it:
1. Remove the back cover.
2. Remove the black fabric covering the faulty speaker(s).
3. Place a piece of electrical tape directly on the speaker.
This will very slightly lower the volume but it alleviates the racket made by the poorly made drivers. This may not work for everyone.
*I am not responsible for any damages done to your device. Attempt at your own risk!*
Good Luck!

I have that problem, but hardly seems worth voiding my warranty to fix it by ripping the back cover off.
All you gotta do is turn the volume down a notch and its fine...

You don't rip the back cover off. It's just held in place by some clips. There's no way anyone will be able to tell you took the back off if you doing correctly.

The back just snaps off almost as if they wanted you to. There's no way to tell that you did it.

Sorry, this sounds like a terrible idea. The speakers seem to only be popped over the coil, the real fix would prevent them from coming off of the base. I have reattached mine three times now but they eventually pop back up after some loud notification or such.
Better speakers would be nice, the n7's are just awful.
I fixed my speaker issues or at least reduced it so it's not too bad...
1) remove the back cover
2) now look at the speaker grill from the inside of the back cover. It is a small piece of metal plate with fine holes in it. This is only tack welded to the back cover in a few spots. There may be a couple of pieces of tape from the factory already holding the center section of the plate.
3) now use a few small strips of tape and hold down the rest of the plate at its edges...
4) resemble the nexus 7 and test it out...
The cracking sounds are not as noticeable anymore...
Ymmv....
I am also thinking about removing the little plate all together, or replacing it with a plastic mesh or some thin foam...

I saw a video a few months back someone had posted here. It was a video where they wanted to see how tough this phone was. They dropped in a pitcher of water, threw it out of a moving rv's window twice, barbecued it & then put it in a bag of rice for a week. Although it was scratched up pretty good, it worked fine. I know it made me feel confident about the build quality of this phone.

Mine did. Had it in my back pocket (stupid, I know, but I'm used to sticking my devices there), and next thing I knew, I had a bent n5 with backlight bleed galore. Seems this is a common problem with the iPhone, but unfortunately I expect to see more n5 users fall into my boat, as I was even being relatively careful to not put excessive weight on it while sitting (and I only weigh 160lb). Save yourself headaches and break any habits you have of putting things in your rear pockets now. :'(

Your everyday carry can get out of hand fast.
5 inch phone, wallet, keys, pen, headphones, knife, flashlight Some of us may carry guns depending on the country, license status , or occupation. You can hit the need for a "man purse/satchel" very quickly. Sometimes your pants have bigger back pockets so that's where it ends up.

Every time I see someone stick their phone in their back pocket, I give them a bewildered look. Then they ask me why I'm looking at them like that, and I reply, "You actually keep your phone in your back pocket? How can you stand that?"
Goodness gracious, that has to be a chore to sit on, and I've seen a many stories where phones have been broken by being sat on.
Sounds like a human error OP, not a manufacturing error. Nothing to go creating a thread about. Most of us know sitting on your phone is not very smart....

Back in the day, I used to carry my personal Cell Phone on my hip in a case along with my pager for my work and my Palm Pre PDA. I looked like a real Techno Geek for sure. These days, I carry my work phone on my hip only. My PDA and my cell are now one and I carry that in my front pocket. Heck...I get nervous when I bend forward to tie my shoes. But...I live in Canada eh? and carry my cell in my jacket pocket or shirt pocket most of the time now. I've very aware of it at all times as I do not want an accident to happen. Putting it in my back pocket and sitting on it makes me twitch just thinking of it!
Yeah, I never understood the reasoning behind putting a phone in your back pocket. I was always amazed to see someone pull a phone out of their back pocket and see it still turn on.
Something I'd never do though. If needs be I'll just carry a bag, TBH.

It's very slight and hard to see, but if I move my fingers over the upper left area on the back I can feel what I can only describe as a dent or slight warping. The right side in the same area feels smooth to the touch. There seems to be a speaker on the right side. Not sure if the two sides are slightly different because of this or not.

I couldn't quite tell if he was being sarcastic, which is why I shot him a "Thanks". Hmmm, does the bump cause anything to malfunction? My thought is if it's not outright noticeable to you a warranty center could possibly overlook it. My fear here is that you send it back and they tell you they didn't notice anything. Anyway, I think you got what you needed.
I hope she gets her phone fixed!

Yeah she's experiencing absolutely no malfunction. She's loving the device. I've known I wanted an X the moment it was released so hopefully I can grab mine in the near future. I have no doubt that it would be highly possible for them to not notice anything if she sent it back. It's just my nitpicking and curiosity that let me to post the question here.

I wasn't being sarcastic, just eliminating the obvious first. Like the other guy said, never assume someone knows something.
I haven't seen that on an X before, but my experience with battery warping has been closer to the center of the device/battery rather than on one side or a corner. Not sure what would cause that, but I'm not terribly familiar with what's located where under the back this phone. There's got to be a teardown somewhere, though.
Oh, and not to nitpick, but "he" is a "she."

Ahh! Your avatar being upside down is my excuse. And thanks to both of you for the feedback!
