[Q] So, am I screwed? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, let it be known that I'm an idiot. I'm not new to the scene but I did some really noobish things and I've really screwed myself into a corner. So, first the background info. I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate, on Rogers (Canada), and I was running CM 10.2 (if I remember correctly). I set an alarm at night and woke up the next day to a recovery loop. I tried a number of ways to recover and reflash and one by one they failed, and piece by piece, I unmounted, erased and formatted everything (I know, I know). So I've got to an interesting point and I'm not sure what to do next as most method seem inaccessible. So, here's the list of broken things (that originally worked but I broke):
- No recovery/no ability to boot to recovery. All attempts cycle a boot loop.
- no internal sdcard. Can't see it or mount it. I've tricked my phone into thinking the external is the internal. This however, means I can't download anything or even copy anything to my phone. No cloud or internet files.
- no usb. I can connect and it recognizes it, but there's no sdcard (so it thinks) so there's no connection made.
- no download mode. Here's where it gets funny. I managed to flash a stock kernel with odin (YAY!) but I flashed an AT&T version and guess what? No download mode anymore. I've tried numerous combinations. I haven't yet tried a jig which is what I'm assuming everyone will say I have to do. I have no idea what I'm doing from there.
- almost unusable phone. I can't even make calls as the SIM is meant for Rogers, not AT&T
- my bank account. I'm short on cash so I can't just go and buy a new fancy phone even though I really, really want to.
I seem to be the prime example of what not to do and I brought it all upon myself. However, I've heard that as long as the phone turns on, there's hope. My goal is to get back to a CM firmware (or something else if you hate it) and maybe recover from the damage I've caused. So, am I screwed?
tl;dr Everything is broken and I'm stupid and desperate. :good:

Jig... to get into Download mode.
Then flash an Odin Stock firmware for Rogers here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18371028 Post #4.
But not sure how that will work out for ya since ur internal memory is messed up.

If all fails and u don't mind spending some money when ya can...check out mobiletechvideos.com for the repair.

I think the main problem here is failed internal memory. At one point the system lost the access to internal memory -> reboot -> can't read data -> reboot, etc. This is why you found the phone in a bootloop that morning. Android 4.3 (CM10.2) is still in beta, but it's not the cause of the failure. No software fix for a hardware problem, unfortunately. I know some people use external SD as internal, but I never needed to study this workaround.

It's using the external as the internal right now. If I remove the external and try to boot, it will show the boot logo and shut down. Seems like the jig is the next step.

[Q] Running a CM7 Nightly when Internal SD seems to have Self Destructed.

This Bell I9000m that this wonderful place helped me figure out how to toss CM7 Nightly into Just had a melt down this past week I need to figure out if I'm boned or not.
I was pulling my media off the internal SD card with Teracopy the night before it all happened in usb mass storage mode and ever since the data was pulled. Icons on my desktop would only start displaying AndroidMarket like logo's and not launching anything. So i would reboot the phone to see if it was just acting silly and it would only get worse.
So I tried factory resetting and clearing all the cache's via CWM bootloader than load the OS to no avail the system simply stopped booting so I tried installing via zip the original nightly that I had left on the internal SD that was a signed release... The install didnt pass the signature check.
At this point I've just put trying on hold to come and ask around here. Am i screwed or am I just around the corner from having my damn phone back.... again .... I need ideas or solutions to this problem.
***UPDATE***
Bell has sent the phone back with the note on the file, "Replaced Major Component" I cant even begin to imagine what that means. Besides everything is apparently less broken? Although i was recording a meeting in full 720P and it decided to randomly stop recording at 47 minutes without any apparent reason.
If anyone reads this and comes up with any ideas as to what may be able to be done let me know please.
I'm trying EZOdin and easybase but the format does not like to work regardless of the PIT file i use it never seems to play well. But im guessing its probably a good idea to start fresh.
Try regular Odin and see what it says but if you internal SD is hooped it will still flash but it won't boot. You are trying the EZbase Froyo 3 part file with pit?
You could try a stock rom also but note you may need to add a DBdata file to the stock rom if you repartition as you need a db data file and it is not included in jl2 or kc1. I guess kies used the existing one from eclair and that is why it is not there.
It sounds like it could be a dying SD card (especially the heavy file use just before issues started). Have you ever had to replace your handset yet?
G
Bell has had my phone for service twice the first time they charged me 60$ for some reason and the second time they did not.
But both times they just reloaded the phone and returned it to me even though both times were similar problems its like they're just trying to avoid having to deal with giving me a replacement.

[Q] Bootloop after Kernel Flasher use -_-

Hey everyone, after a year of not caring about any mods or hacks for my galaxy s I thought that I should get one problem out of this world.
I am talking about the constantly flashing led buttons...so I stumbled upon BLN control which needed a special kernel, so I downloaded the promoted Kernel Flasher and the .tar file of the manual site of BLN (the site i was linked to via my mobilephone when opening BLN).
That tar file was called something with odin in it (not the "update" version). I used odin back in the days I remember...anyways, while in kernel flasher i inserted that tar file...and the kernel was installed, auto-reboot and since then it restarts on loops. Loads the desktop, checks for sd cards...you can scroll around a bit...then after 8 seconds it gets black and restarts.
I am really desperate here, because my exams are coming up and due to my carelessness I have this nasty problem to solve on top of that. Arghh...
There are some appz with important information in it (like notes), a clear swipe would be the absolute last resort here.
Can I recover my old kernel (didn't backup my old one), or replace/update with a new, working one? Through the recovery menue?
If you'd be so kind to step by step explain how it should be done? and I will cease any modding, hacking after this one. -_-
It is a rooted 2.3.3 Gingerbread kernel, as far as i can remember.
Can you go to download mode ? if so flash the .tar file as pda in odin. MAKE SURE IT'S THE RIGHT KERNEL FOR YOUR DEVICE.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App. i helped? hit the thanks button. Thanks
Thanks for the tip.
This morning I played around with this bootlooping phenomenon a bit and found out, that when I immediately close any wlan or phone signal my phone works normal...just that I cannot phone anyone, or be phoned, or surf the net.
I manually did a backup of all my important files now, phew.
When using backup programs my phone resets immediately too.
Ok, long story short, I got my firmware, kernel info now, so you might be able to tell me which kernel, firmware would be appropriate for me (didn't update for a year now, so I am not on top of the news).
Kernel/file that screwed up my phone:
i9000_jvh_backlightNotification_v3.0_odin.tar
My actual Kernel Version:
2.6.35.7-i9000XWJVH-CL184813 [email protected] #51
Buildnumber:
Gingerbread.XWJVB
I am able to enter the download mode, but which . tar-file should I use in your opinion? What's a good one today?
Ah, I see the light, maybe I once again will be able to phone again.

do you want to use a Samsung stock kernel or do you wanna give a try to Cyanogenmod stable or something like that?
Last time I saw samfirmware sites I saw that 2.3.6 was avaible for Europe...
Well... that's your choice!!!
Will I be able to keep the functionality of BLN, that keeps those led-buttons at the bottom turned off?
With a Samsung Stock-Kernel you will loose the BLN-Feature. You can try flashing another Kernel which has implemented this feature too. I used the SemaphoreKernel which has this feature. (works on all GB-Roms)
If you try Cyanogenmod you will loose BLN too. But Cm has a feature called "LED-Notification" which does the same as BLN does.
So, I downloaded update-cm-7.1.0-GalaxyS-signed.zip should I go on with this manual? http: //jjpda.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-71-on-i9000.html ?
Or do I have to go back from a root to apply this new one?
Which program do I use on PC, and which one on my phone again? :O
Search in Cyanogenmod wiki for i9000,you will find all the steps to follow..
You need 1st TO root the phone, than install ROM manager, install CWM, place CM7 zip on internal SD, remove SIM And ext. SD,reboot into recovery, wipe data, cache and dalvik, flash CM7 zip and reboot.
Don't forget:
-fully charge your phone before starting
-read CM7 wiki page
Hope this might help you.

Well, I did everything the wiki told me to do and here i am with a new rom.
But now my SIM-CARD isn't recognized anymore. I accidently forgot what bedo told me in his last post, and left that card inside while flashing. My bad, i guess.
But what can I do now? I re-flashed, wiped already, with no success, my sim card is still absent in cyanmod. :\

Can you post a screenshot about info of your phone with CM7?
(long press power button and select Screenshot when you are in the info menu )
Here some info for your amusement. Have fun!
Supposed we get to a solution, so I can use my phone for communication purposes again, I wanted to format the internal sd memory of my phone.
Can I just format it, then just leave the flash files on it, to reflash again?
How does that work?
Also, I flashed that googleappz package rom too after the cynomod flash, as I was supposed to by wiki manual.
But I cannot find google maps, android market etc.
I wonder if there is any connection to my initial sim card problem.
But first things first I guess...wanna do some calls :\
Thanks so far for all the good souls trying to help me!
try to flash cm7 radio .
What is the difference exactly? Includes a radio option?
Does it also have the option to turn off the led sensor buttons?
Has it an option to do phone calls too?
PS: I cannot seem to find any cyanmod radio file...hmm

O_O OMG!
Seems no SIM card detected....
Very very strange...
Like the fact that you flash GApps and you can't see market...
Did you wipe cache and Dalvik cache?
+ try this:
"Settings -> Location&Security -> Set up SIM card lock -> Lock SIM card (uncheck)"
I found that in some cases might help.

Take a look here and try with JVK if it works...
I wiped everything possible in recovery mode, flashed that ominous JVC rom, then googleappz. At least now I can shop in the android market. But the sim card still is in the land beyond imagination.
Has my sim card been...bricked?
Which other flash files do you suggest me to try out now? Or should I get me another sim card from the store?
Everything's solved! And the solution was too easy to believe...
Checked the sim card slot more deeply and found out that the sim card wasn't placed in correctly. I seem to have taken it out through the flashing process and in all the "commotion" quickly put it in wrong. Sorry for the big fuzz, everyone.
At least now I got some training with flashing.
So, should I reflash the first cyanmod again?
no you don't need to reflash the rom, cause you already flashed twice plus wiped all possible options...!
I just didn't want to ask you to check if the SIM card was insert properly,
but that would solve your issue faster...!
Enjoy CM7!
Well, I had some time to try out the performance and stability of this mod.
Games definitely are running with a some lag (also reaction time of the sensor to control your game, makes them unplayable).
I tried to uncheck the Cyanmod setting option "Dithering" and "JIT"..also put the cpu settings to "performance".
To be sure I formatted internal SD and external SD.
My phone had some problems finding my external SD, but some guy on the net told to go to Cyanmod settings, applications, use internal memory...and now I use my external SD for everything I guess?
Maybe this is because everything is in slowmo?
Maybe the firstly flashed mod was more...stable?
So, my question would be how to use my internal sd card, maybe it gets faster then?

[Q] Wondering if im screwed or not

OK so heres my story of what happened to my Captivate. I plan on getting an SIII sometime in the next couple of weeks, but it would be nice to get my Captivate up and running again in case I need it sometime in the future.
So I was running CM9 on my phone, not sure which build, not sure if it matters. Phone was still in my pocket when I went swimming. Left it in a bag of rice, and it booted up. I got the message that said Encryption failed...reset phone or whatever. I figured it would just format it and didnt know that it would lead to more problems. So based on what I have read on the site, now my internal SD is fried im assuming. Now I tried following some guides for using an external SD card but I couldnt get it to partition from ClockworkMod, and I couldnt get into download mode for a few days because something probably got messed up internally from water damage. I managed to get into download mode today and tried running an Odin One-Click to see if it would help at all. Now my phone brings up the AT&T World Phone screen, then shuts off as soon as the screen normally transitions into the next step of the boot process.
So thats my story. I just want to know if anyone knows if this is still a problem with the SD card or if my phone is completely beyond repair. Thanks a lot to anyone that tries to help
You got hit by the EU (encryption unsuccessful) bug. From what I hear not a whole lot you can do now except try this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447303
There are a couple other threads in the dev section about this as well.

Ya that was the guide I tried but my external SD card wont partition, at least not through clockworkmod. When i press the button to partition, the partition process is instant, and i know it just has to skip it because there is no way it would partition that fast.
You could always pay to have jtag performed. It will overwrite all the screwed up stuff and fix the problem.

I think with the EU bug its just trashed. JTAG won't even fix it. There are a few stories of them coming back to life on their own, but no promises.

Galaxy Tab P100-cant delete prior owner info

Ive searched and havent been able to find a solution to this, although Ive seen it asked before.
Galaxy Tab P100 bought from a pawn shop. It still has the prior owners (unknown) gmail info minus p/w. I cannot remove the account, or access market because of this. Everytime I tried to data reset (both via Privacy settings and also CWM), add a new rom, or add apps - after I reboot it goes back to the prior owner settings and apks.
I have Odin'd/Heimdall with different roms but they dont stick. Different kernels install though. Ive added two different CWMs. Superuser breaks after every reset - I gain, then lose, root. Ive rooted/added root explorer and deleted accounts.db and user.db - they go back after. Ive spoken with Sprint and we tried everything they had, as well as a ##786# and MSL number (resetting phone activation I think?). Their response was take it in to send back. I want to fix it myself.
It seems to me that this prior info is overriding and reinstalling every reboot, preventing any new flashing/etc from taking place.
Here is my question. I took it apart this morning and disconnected the battery (thinking maybe it will wipe any memory). But does it have a CMOS-type battery? I noticed there is a small round battery-looking connection soldered into the mainboard (see here - step 7/8 http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-Teardown/4103/1)
Does anyone know what this is? I dont really have anything to lose, but Im not great with a soldering iron, but will try. Im thinking this might be for the memory, and disconnecting/reconnecting this would erase any permanent user information, freeing it up for me to add mine.
Or if anyone has any new ideas I would appreciate it.
Thanks for the time. Ed

It is not a battery backed memory, it is a NAND chip.
Sounds like the chip gone bad.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA
Just an update.
I did not do anything with the round battery thing, as priyana stated the memory is stored on a nand chip. I put the tab back together.
I rooted again, and found the ea24 firmware and loaded it via odin. It took, but the prior user info was still there, and everything (I mean a crapload of apps) began force closing. I did confirm that ea24 was on it. I then flashed back to ef17.
I contacted Sprint repair store again, and they told me that they probably cant fix it, and its something they have to send back. They said that I have done all that they would do in-store.
I dont understand what could be wrong, as I found the prior owner and spoke with her. She had no issues with it. It worked fine prior to her getting rid of it. And it works fine, I just cant get rid of any prior info. I googled it and it seems like there are people out there who have the same problem, but no one has an answer, including sprint or samsung.
So much for my venting. Ill keep trying to find an answer.

First of all, I'd like to apologize for posting something that won't really help, but I recognize this from somewhere else. On some devices, there's some kind of file (that you can delete via the adb prompt when you're root) that on every bootup checks to see if the installed ROM matches stock, and if not, restores to stock. This sounds exactly what you're experiencing when you mention that no ROMs "stick".
I think you should try to look into if there's some files that need to be erased in order for a ROM to be cleanly installed that you haven't gotten rid of. It might also be some kind of feature that the previous user enabled, so maybe it's somewhere around in the settings that you can disable it, who knows.
It definitely does not sound like a memory issue because I don't see how a memory issue could make the stock ROM suddenly appear again after you've installed a custom ROM through CWM (assuming CWM gives no errors or anything and the custom ROM has actually been wiped).
Maybe you can do a more thorough wipe of the device memory manually with some guidance from someone who knows more about how these tablets work :fingers-crossed:
I agree with you about some type of file and bootup. Thats why I went with maybe it being a cmos/nand issue. I couldnt understand that I wiped everything, and information was still coming back. It makes me think that somewhere, something is being stored separate from the main drive.
Ive used the factory restore, CWM (2 different versions - 3 and 5 I believe), and wiped data (factory reset), cache and Davlik three times each before I flashed the CM ROMs. And I have not had any errors or problems installing any of the CWMs.
I spoke with the previous user, and she did nothing above turning it on/off, and using it. I am not on the Sprint network with it, and the wi-fi doesnt turn on until I set it up, so I cant see it being something that contacts Sprint and OTAs from them.
Can anyone tell me if, using ADB, there is a more thorough wipe I can perform ? More than the normal one done through CWM or Android factory restore?
Something similar to the reformatting of a hard drive?
Thanks
Ed
I have the same problem. Did you find any solution?
I believe the previous owner info is stored on sprint servers. When you reboot, it downloads all the crap.
The long time required to reboot explains the slow transfer of data - wireless.
These wireless service providers are pretty sneaky.
Thanks
Hi,
Have you tried formatting both internal and external Sd via Windows? (connecting via USB)
You can also try CM10, it has a different memory map which will write your device completely.

I have this same problem with a tab. Its not connected to sprint, has not been on the internet at all. Was there ever a fix for this?? Please let me know its a christmas present and i need to fix this issue. Thank you

Fix: mmc_failed (internal memory) YES...THERE'S A FIX. KEEP YOUR PHONE

I have seem to have found the issue and solution to this problem that many of us have been experiencing. If you have encountered issues like myself, there is a thread dedicated to the description of this problem; MAJOR LAG, RANDOM REBOOTS, the phone won't boot up and goes into a screen where you read:
----Mmc_failed failed boot---
After searching for about a month, it seems to be an internal SD issue. Many have reported to having these issues after they root, others upgrading to the non reversible DOK2 FIRMWARE. Others were stock with out root and had this issue as well.
**THE PARTITION OF THE INTERNAL SD CARD IS CORRUPTED**
Could be corrupted files, that stick to the phone EVEN AFTER ODIN FLASHING STOCK MANY TIMES.
(I Odin 5 times back to back to fix and the partition was still corrupted)
People thought "well, if Odin doesn't work, it's a hardware issue" I thought that myself, and it was not.
My friends, I have found something that has worked for me and would like to share with you guys. I hope this fixes your device like it did mine. I've been so close to throwing this Note 4 against the wall, running it over with my car, or smashing it with a hammer. I had no way to return my device as many have suggested to do because I left T-mobile a while back. Plus, rooting my phone voided my warranty. Yada, yada, yada, let's get into it.
*Since the internal partition to the SD card is messing up, we need to repair it.
**In order for this to work, you will need to be ROOTED.
*Download an app called "AParted SD Card Partition." Hope I don't violate any rules, but here is the link to it on Google Play.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sylkat.AParted
Once the app gains root access, you will be brought to the main screen. Click the tab that says tools. Once that screen pops up, you will see
Part 1 FS: fat32 . Size 31914 MB
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Please note that the size to Part 1 may be a different number. That is what mine read.
*You will now click Part 1
*After doing so, at the bottom where it says create, click it and replace it with REPAIR.
*Hit apply, and you're all set.
*Turn off phone, pull battery out for 10 seconds, as well as external SD card and Sim. (They hold small amounts of electric current which may prevent the phone to do a proper boot) I usually hold both volume buttons, power button, home button, and pull the s spen out for 10 seconds simultaneously, then put it all back together and boot up.
*******Also, I used the app to delete the partition, and creating it again to avoid problems from a faulty repair. So if you want to do that, click Part 1. Instead of repair, click delete. Once done, click Part 1 again, then click create. Hit the Fat32, and start it. Once it's created, you shouldn't have issues. In case you're worried, pictures and videos will not be erased.******
I HAVE NO AFFILIATION WITH THE DEVELOPER, BUT HE SAVED MY DEVICE WITH THIS APP. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO THANK HIM AND HIT THE LIKE BUTTON IF THIS WORKED FOR YOU AS WELL. LEAVE COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS BELOW, AND IF YOU SEE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THE PROBLEM IN OTHER THREADS, RE- DIRECT THEM TO THIS THREAD.
This is what I got when repairing the partition. You should have a message as well.
um... if they can't start up the device, how are they going to download it from the play store and install to run it? Thanks!
Are you able to go into DOWNLOAD MODE AND FLASH FIRMWARE? I had the Mmc_failed screen and my phone would not turn on until I took everything out the phone; battery, both cards and s pen, then hold all the buttons down.
Try this to reboot like I described up at top.
Turn the phone off. Pull the battery out, s pen out, SD card and SIM CARD.
PRESS AND HOLD ALL HARDWARE BUTTONS FOR 10 SECONDS WITH EVERYTHING OUT THE PHONE. I CLICK ALL THE BUTTONS SEVERAL TIMES TO GET ANY ELECTRIC CURRENT OUT THE PHONE. IT WON'T BOOT UP IF YOU DON'T DO THAT. I'm assuming it messes with the boot up process. Anyways, Re assemble and boot. When I was having this mmc_failed crap, it would take several times doing these steps so that the phone could boot. Don't get frustrated and try again until it boots up. Sometimes it would sit on the NOTE 4 screen, other times it would boot up to the Android logo with the mmc_failed screen. It takes several attempts since the PARTITIONS TO THE SD CARD ARE CORRUPTED. IF YOU ARE ABLE TO ODIN FLASH FIRMWARE, FLASH THE FIRMWARE TO HELP YOU BOOT UP. FLASH TWRP, THEN ROM, then you will have root.
If you still get the mmc_ boot after repairing it, erase the partition, and create it again. I updated the guide on top on how to do that. Haven't had a single hiccup or Mmc_failed bs since then. Good luck guys.
Please report back if it worked for you.
I will try this as soon as I can. The t-mobile store I went to was unhelpful and only wanted to sell me a new phone, even though I've only had the phone for 1 yr and 1 week. The problems started 2 weeks ago. Thank you for giving me hope.

No problem. Save everything important from your sd card and formatt it. That also helps. Try booting up your phone without your sd card. You know what mmc is? An sd card. Google it. Ive seen corrupt sd cards prevent phones from booting up.
Now I can't turn on the phone to fix like you. This morrning I'n in stock DOK2 and have all of error like you. I flash TWRP and flash cook rom, hope can fix like you. But after flash TWRP succesfull, I'm flash cook rom but the phone turn off and can't turn on. when it turn on, it go in to download mode and notice MMcC read fail. I try many time but it still like that. I use odin to load DOK2 Stock firwame but it FAIL. try many time still FAIL
now I don;t know anything need to do to save my phone. lol
What does it fix??
I tried using this application and the first partition that came up was a 61240 Mb partition. I thought it has to be my external SD card. Then i pulled out the external sd card and ran this application again. This time it did not find any partition.
Is this what its suppose to do? If not can you post a screenshot of your partition list.
Thanks

After flashing TWRP AND THE COOKED ROM, TURN OFF THE PHONE. TAKE THE BATTERY OUT....SIM CARD OUT...TAKE THE SD CARD OUT AND THE S PEN PUT.
THEN WITH ALL THAT OUT, PRESS AND HOLD POWER FOR 20 SECONDS. THEN TRY TURNING ON THE PHONE. HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND IT TURNED ON AFTER A FEW TRIES.
U may need tp try to do that a few times until you get it to power on.
This is Kinda confusing, we are talking about the INTERNAL STORAGE here, Right? If so, How on earth an App can Format the Internal Storage while its being used obviously by the OS itself? and How can it NOT erase any Media files? It seems very unrealistic approach? unless we boot the system using external boot device then wipe the affected partition, think "Ultimate Boot CD" or "Hiren" for Windows.
What you are saying is like this: Boot Windows laptop/Desktop normally, then Format C: from within Windows !!!
I know you mentioned REPAIR PARTITION, that would/might be OKAY, but to Re-Create the Partition of the MMC (Internal Storage), this sounds crazy, and not even doable.
Please Shed some more lights into this !
It does not fix internal SD

If you take out the external SD card, the app does not detect any partition. So this means that we are never fixing the internal memory, just the external one.

I was wondering, could this issue be related to eMMC like they had on earlier galaxy series. These symptoms are pretty much similar.
