Lost IMEI after flashing - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
Recently my phone loses IMEI after flashing any ROM, even after flashing kernel only (Semaphore 3.0.0 on CM10.1.3, for example). I have flashed the phone many of times before with different ROMs, kernels, sounds, fonts, animations, etc., but never had this issue before. Something has changed and I don't know what it is. It's getting annoying I just did a full cycle by the book: Format int/ext storage -> One-click stock ROM -> One-click Corn kernel -> Cyanogen 10.1.3 Stable (flash to repartition, flash the again). The phone works perfectly. Flashed another JB ROM to test, the same one I have flashed many times before with no issues (HellyBean 4.2.2, CM-based), and bam - lost IMEI again!
I have no problem restoring IMEI. The question is why the phone loses IMEI now after ROM change but never before?

What you describe suggests something has changed in the install scripts on either the CM or Helly roms.
It seems like flashing 10.1.2. instead of .3 would test CM as cause.
sent from one of my two SGH-I897 Captivates

I was thinking about this, it started somewhere around CM 10.1.2. But if the cause is changes in CM installation, then am I the only one experiencing this issue? I don't see many comments about lost IMEI on 4.2.2 ROMs. Yes, I know it happens, but not on every flash. I tried flashing Xylon 2.3.3 ROM, the one I flashed at least 3 times before with no issues, and same thing - lost IMEI. Seems like EFS is now in a place that gets wiped every time I flash something.

I tried installing cyanmod 4.2.2 and lost my imei. So I flashed back to 2.3.5 I think ill leave it where its at

Try again. Android 4.2.2 is much better than stock 2.3.x.

Will It erase it again? I took me forever to unlock it to T-Mobile. I don't want to loose that.

The phone will stay unlocked. Just try again and you"ll be fine. Use latest CM10.1.3 Stable release.

Is it a one click Odin file. I have the one for 2.3.5

Wont boot but got download

Hi excuse my ignorance im a dhd user slightly different.
I rooted my wifes phone, clockwork was okay but would only boot cm7..would not allow gapps.
So i reverted to taking it back to froyo. Then i wanted ics on it,so flashed that,i kept her data so tried resoring that.
Now it just hangs at galaxy s screen
I cant enter into clockwork at all. It does enter download thankgod.
Thing is taking it back to froyo takes a while! Is there any way to take her straight to ics or cyn 7 or different rom without doing froyo.
The kernels for this phone are slighty different from mine the way they work..so how do i get the exact kernel and rom running again,
Also lol her data is on a back up i did will tgat still be there? Rom manager must save it somewhere?
ill be honest i have no idea anymore when coming to the galaxy s,im fairly confident with my dhd,but this has got me stumped
plus ill be a goner if i cant get it restored lol
Sorry for the looooong question

T hink your problem is that you tried to install ICS on Froyo Base. SInce Gingerbread there is a new bootloader. If you want to install ICS or any Gingerbread-based ROM, you have to install a JVH base ROM (with bootloader), for example Ficeto_Deodexed_JVH_I9000_ODIN, first. This will update the bootloader and you may flash any newer rom via CWM.
If you have an boot-loop now, you may try flashing Ficeto_Deodexed_JVH_I9000_ODIN via ODIN, its a very basic ROM (see this thread).
Thanks for your help, its up and running again

No reception after flash with cwm.

I upgraded from icssgs 3 to 4.2 abd ever since i get no reception at all. No data, no calls no nothing. Wifi works though.
I have tried since and flashing several different roms and the problem persists. Has anyone had this problem before or does anyone have a possible solution?

Have you tried factory reset, cache wipe, advanced and dalvik cache wipe, and then re-flashing rom? Are you using teamhacksung build 16?
risking to sound stupid, by " No data, no calls no nothing" you mean "no signal"?
if you've tried the solution suggested by am2012, have you tried installing a different modem?
try flashing a modem...u can get one from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158783&highlight=bootloaders
I have tried wiping and reflashing. I have also tried flashing different roms with different modems.
I reflashed the last rom that worked but the problem persisted.
I have had thoughts of flashing a rom with odin instead of cwm but i dont know if it should make a difference?
Thanx for the replys btw, all help is very appreciated.

Try wiping and resetting everything. Then put phone into download mode and odin a stock ROM. Then if things work start working again with your signal, flash rc4.2 again. I have flashed loads of ics roms and never had a problem I couldn't fix by going back to stock ROM. Try 2.3.6 the 'leaked one' from Sammobile.
By the way, you have got a i9000 international version haven't you?
Sent from my GT-i9000 using XDA App
Hey, just realised you have i9100. Have you used the right ROM for your phone? Does icssgs release for i9100?
Sent from my GT-i9000 using XDA App
Is ur imei at its place ???
If you've got an sII then icssgs is never going to work - go back to sII rom.
If you've got an sI then as sbnaul pointed out it is most probably your IMEI. Some users found their IMEI changed when upgrading to 4.2
Hopefully you've taken a backup of your efs - if so just copy the backup imei file over.
If not, there is still hope - flash stock gb 2.3 back onto the phone - this should restore the imei. Then take a backup of the efs folder, flash 4.2 and copy your backed up imei into efs
Thanks for the help.
I have 2 phones, one internarional sgs and an international s2.
I mostly use the s2 but i want the sgs to work nonetheless
Im gonna try reflashing the stock, i dont have any efs backups or such:/
I have been looking for a good stock rom but didnt find a good one. Im gonna look for the leaked sammobile release though so thanks for that.
How do i take the needed efs backup? Is it through cwm?
Thanks!

I'm quite sure that this is a modem issue...
If you know, which ROM were you using previous to ICS where the reception was fine, then you can flash that modem.
(For eg.: it was 2.3.6 XXJVU in my case. So, I would require a JVU modem)
Here is a concise list of all the modems: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158783

Yes, I have tried that but it doesnt work.
But now I flashed the stock rom and I got the reception back. So now Im gonna root and try to backup the efs folder.
Thanks alot everybody to answered the thread.
There we go. Now it works again. I didnt even have to restore the efs folder.
I just flashed the stock rom, rooted and then flashed icssgs 4.2 and now it works.
Thanks everyone
full wipe , flash new rom worked for me
I've heard if you flash a stock ROM with Odin, then the problem with the IMEI (efs folder) is often done. Is this right?

Cant connect to ATT (no calls, no data) and cant save new APNs after upgrading to JB

I upgraded last night to Jelly Bean using these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1775373&page=11 . The last ROM i had flashed was a gingerbread Apex ROM a long time ago, and I think it had i9000 bootloaders (I think this because an i9000 screen pops up first thing when i turn it on, before the devil kernel logo pops up). I ran in to some issues while upgrading so I used Heimdall 1 click without bootloaders to get me back to stock gingerbread and then when I flashed Jelly Bean and the Devil Kernel everything worked (camera, music, etc.) except it doesn't detect any wireless carrier, APNs aren't saved, it doesn't detect when I take my SIM card out, and it also shuts down randomly. I suspect the problem is with the i9000 bootloaders, but what I have read on this forum makes me think installing new bootloaders is somewhat dangerous so I wanted to get advice before I tried anything else. How should I try to fix this? And if I do need new bootloaders, what is the safest way?
Thanks

I don't think it's the bootloaders..I've flashed a jb rom with i9000 boot loaders and I had sim card and data working.. try going back to stock GB, do the whole rooting process, then flash cm9 ics, after that flash JB

Will do as soon as I get home from work. Should I use the same Heimdall method?
While you are in Ginger Bread, you should back up your EFS Folder. I believe that your IMEI was changed in the flash process, and the network could not recognize your phone. In should a case, you could copy the backup of your EFS folder to your JB phone, and restore the IMEI.

I used titanium backup before I flashed, and also copied all of the contents of my internal and external sd cards to my computer before tinkering with things. So do I already have my EFS Folder? If so, how do I restore it? And if not, how do I back it up when I get back to GB?
For anyone else that might come across this problem, I solved it by flashing this modem, then flashing the kernel again

[Q] Weird Screen Issue ?!

Hi
Today my parents got their Galaxy S with Froyo on it.
I installed Gingerbread JVQ with Root and now everytime you boot I got a really weird screen which I have never seen before.
Here's a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GG8vKd-On1A
After the boot you can use it normally.
My question is, can I upgrade to 4.1.1 SlimBean without any trouble?
I really haven't seen this befor and have no Idea if something is wrong with the Screen.
KUN1
I have his twinbrother the Samsung Galaxy S Plus.. And it looks like some files are corrupted. So i recommend a full reflash with a stock rom and no root to see if it is solved..
If so then you can easy go to slimbean
I have flashed JVQ twice but I will try again with JVU

Why not trying cm 10.1 base rom's ?
If i remember well, you have problem with bootloader from froyo on GB ROM.
Flash 3 file GB ROM with pit and re-partition checked,
also after rooting consider switching to ICS or JB rom. I recommand one from AOSP line. good luck

Agree with the above also re-download the Rom that you choosed as it may have been corrupted
Everything is fine now
I reflashed JVU with repartition and the bug was gone.
That happens if you run a GB or above rom while still using the froyo bootloader. Aside from that weird screen there are no other noticeable side effects. Where on earth did you even managed to get your hands on a I9000 with froyo bootloader anyway? The GB update came out years ago.
AW: [Q] Weird Screen Issue ?!
I bought the phone from another person.
I also don't know why he hasn't updated ^^
But normally if you flash a 3 file rom the bootloader should also be upgraded, shouldn't it?
After 3 times it finally changed the bootloader.

Not all rom files have the bootloader in them. I am not sure why, but that's just the way it is. Back then there was a mad scramble to figure out which of the rom files contain bootloaders because even though you cannot brick your phone while flashing a rom, you can brick it if you somehow corrupt the bootloader.

Flash Odin KK4 without bootloaders, then flash Corn Kernel and get back to the ROM you want to use as per their full instructions.
so you mean i have to install this??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
Yep... But 1st if u have the same cm10 kernel that you made the back up with, you could flash it through Odin (or the recovery you have now, if you can boot into that recovery) and then use the button combo to reboot to that cm10's recovery and then restore your backup.
Or i may have misunderstood where you made your back up. If it was on Corn Kernel...then you must do as BWolf56 posted.

Ok... I am 'Newbie'...
I Did things... Now I am running 'Captivating by sepphi' - The problem is little signals and gets really slow when installed Google map...
I also tried 'Lanight 4.1.2' Good but problem was with camera - It stops working. Also little bit with signals...
Now I read about 'Modem' - And not understanding what it is? Why, when and how to install it?
I just understood that If radio problem [Network etc...] Then different Modems could work based on your location...
Thats where I found this thread and I am also from India and you seem expert in this... Can you guide me what should I be doing to get read of this Network Problem?

Flashing a modem is fairly simple, you download it and flash it in recovery. One thing though, make sure you flash a i9000 modem: http://soggycashew.weebly.com/i9000-modems.html
You'll have to test them as we can't tell which one will work the best in your area.

No, if you were already on a Gingerbread ROM you never have to change bootloaders again.
