What is the past of least resistance to root a 4.4 tmo X? In order to keep data, is it still that insanely long process?
Sent from my XT1053 using Tapatalk
Bump............
WIth the T-Mobile variant you have two choices to root..
1. Unlock bootloader, flash twrp recovery, boot into twrp and install SU (or use TWRP's option to root). But this voids your warranty (since you don't have the developer edition), and unlocking the boot loader will wipe your device and data.
2. Use SlapMyMoto which has a lot of manual steps, and you need to reboot to "recovery" (well its modified and you don't have recovery), when you want R/W ability. (Or you have to also do the MotoWpNoMo process to gain R/W full time). But this has many steps.

OTA's will be more painful with #2 as there will be more to restore to stock. And of course the unknowns of if the new OTA will be rootable or not, and how long before a root process comes out.
For #1, you should be able to just put stock recovery back and take the OTA, then reflash TWRP and re-root.

Well, if you don't have an unlocked bootloader, SlapMyMoto (which now incorporates the MotoWpNoMo process into its steps) is the only way (there have been some efforts to consolidate/automate the process). And may not be usable if you're already on 4.4.2 (taking the 4.4.2 OTA update or flashing the full 4.4.2 SBF prevents you from flashing older ROMs which is a crucial step in using SlapMyMoto).
I've not see a 4.4.2 specific root process for locked bootloaders yet, but to be honest, I have a unlocked bootloader, so I haven't been completely paying attention.
If you have an unlocked bootloader, root process is still the same.
there is not going to be any new way to root 4.4 is not going to get a new exploit because 4.4.2 is out and Devs are working on finding a way to root it so the people with locked bootloaders can update.
if you want to root your device you have allready been giving the only 2 ways to do it
Locked bootloader - SlapMyMoto
Unlocked bootloader - Customer Recovery and SUPERSU
please dont bump your thread for info you allready have.
here is a link to both guides for both methods and a guide for unlocking your bootloader.

I would like to move the current state of my phone from a locked bootloader with root and write protection off to an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery. I have the US Cellular Moto X currently on 4.4. I have not a clue where to begin this process. If anyone can point in the right direction or if this is covered in another thread, please show me.
Couple of notes. I do not need steps to unlock the bootloader, just if someone has done it & the basic steps to accomplish it.
You can root without unlocking the boot loader?
Yes & I am root & I have system write off. I have a locked bootloader. I want to go from my current state to having an unlocked bootloader with a custom recovery. Reason why is because I want to be able to flash zips of some certain apps that require to only be flashed via a custom recovery. I would also like to try some custom roms out.

Thank you. I just didn't know if there was a step required before using the moto unlock being that I was root/system write pertection off already. I'll see if my phone is unlockable from moto's site.

Please anybody who already call Sprint and received GSM Unlock via OTA... do the copy of your all files in root folder (/ folders, files), or just make CWM (TWRP) Backup and upload it to server. I will do my best to unlock MOTO X ...

Not sure that I can help, but I'm willing to try, provided you are willing to work with a n00b (who can follow instructions, though).
I've got a XT056 (Sprint Moto X) that I've had active for more than 90days on an account that is several years old. In theory, I should be able to get Sprint to unlock the radios for international GSM. In theory. But I've never (never, EVER) gone to Sprint with a question/concern/request that wasn't made vastly worse for their participation. But I would be willing to try for a worthy project. And this seems to me worthy.
Right now, I am on 4.2.2 rooted (via RockMyMoto). I'm on the verge of unlocking my bootloader so that I can conveniently update to KK and not lose root. Will any of this interfere with the collection of data you require? If not, exactly how do I capture that data? If, as the quoted passage suggests, you basically want the complete file system, then I will grab that when I unlock the bootloader but before I restore my info. I trust that a fresh install prior to signing on will still contain the relevant info?

Hello) You don't need to unlock bootloader! When GSM Unlock will be done just copy all files in root system folder ( / ) by X-plore or RootExplorer. It will be normal for start... Thanks!
If you need testers, I volunteer. I've had an ebay-purchased Sprint Moto X sitting on my desk at work for months now that is otherwise useless to me, so I might as well put it to good use!
There will be a great lot of testers, as according to number of topics in this section there are lots of those who made a great choice to buy sprint x
Now just someone with ota unlocked x should help OP
+1, i'm in the same boat.
I can try to help.

I believe I have an unlocked phone (although I haven't tested it yet outside the US; in the US a T-Mobile SIM did not work; but that's not surprising), and would be happy to help. I don't have an unlocked bootloader, so I can't do a TWRP backup for you. Could you please tell me exactly which parts of the root folder you need?

I think that will be better to find some user with unlocked sprint gsm on other forums if there is no one here. I will try to find one who is willing to cooperate.
I'm getting my phone sim unlocked, have the request into sprint at the moment. I want to give you a clean dump, so after its sim unlocked, would unlocking the bootloader to wipe it, do anything to the sim lock?

No, don't wipe it, if it is possible do copy of system files and if your bootloader is unlocked + Recovery Backup

I've looked around at the forums and I'm actually quite confused by it all so I'm hoping I can get a straight answer.
I have a GSM Moto X Dev Edition on 4.4.2, can I root it?
If so, which of the tools could I use to root it?
Thanks!
You can root. You need to unlock your bootloader first.
Use this thread to install a custom recovery. You need to follow this exactly like it says.

Edit: Worked out perfectly. Thanks!
I was trying to bypass the handsfree activation screen on my XT1056 but met with no success until someone suggested that I manually delete the SprintOMADM2.apk file. That did the trick but in order not to jump through hoops next time he (samwathegreat) also suggested that I extract the system.img from the phone and use it next time for other phones. So I went a step further to RDS Lite the phone to factory, rooted, installed busybox, flashed philz recovery and extracted the system.img after renaming the SprintOMADM2.apk to a bak file. I now used 7zip to modify a copy of the Sprint 4.4.2 SBF I had on my laptop to include the extracted system.img, a logo.bin file that removes the unlocked bootloader warning and also modified the xml file to remove the getvar line. I flashed it on another bootloader unlocked RW MOTO X and all went well. It became a stock rooted Sprint MOTO X essentially, and no handsfree activation screen, no unlocked bootloader warning.
I just want to share, in case anyone might come across a need for it. However, I will not be responsible for any damage to your phone by using this file. Backup before using as this will essentially wipe your device.
Let me just say this clearly here. This is only for you if you want to use the SIM unlock on a RW MOTO X XT1049, hence the need to transform your RW XT1049 to a Sprint MOTO X.
YOU MUST BE BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED TO USE THIS
Here is the link:
Rooted Sprint MOTO X 4.4.2 SBF (with busybox and unlocked bootloader warning removed)
Just so I understand this, once I flash this to an unlocked RW phone, it becomes a sprint phone and I cannot use it on Republic thereafter? In other words, I can use it only on sprint (or any BYOSD carrier) from now on?
If Sprint will activate the ESN for you, fine. But if not, you can use the SIM unlock on it and use it on GSM. You cannot use the SIM unlock on your RW Moto X without installing a Sprint ROM on it, so this makes it easier. Rooted, unlocked bootloader warning removed.

They won't. It will, however, allow you to use it on another CDMA carrier, such as PagePlus if you follow the relevant instructions in the "Flash Moto X to Page Plus" thread. Page Plus (and some other CDMA carriers) will absolutely allow you to activate it.
Also, @ezeuba : any suggestions for Vivjen in the Sim-Crack thread? They are getting some kind of "call barring" error that I haven't seen previously. I'm guessing the instructions just weren't followed correctly....

Sure. Just redo the SIM unlock thing again. Shouldn't be much stress. This takes away the handsfree activation prompt, removes the bootloader unlock warning and also comes rooted already. Let us know how it went.
