Is anyone else experiencing poor reception with their Verizon Motor X? I'm noticing my phone has 1 or 2 bars where my Galaxy S3 had 4 solid bars. 4G also cuts out a lot more.
I live in West Los Angeles but I don't believe its a network issue.
Sent from my XT1060 using xda app-developers app
Well first off bars do not count for anything. That being said if you drop signal a lot you may have a defective one. With the antenna setup this phone should have the best LTE reception on the market
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk 4
The reception on this phone has been tons better than my Galaxy Nexus, S3 and RAZR HD.
Coming from d2vzw and the reception in this phone is really much better
Sent from my XT1060 using xda app-developers app
My sisters iPhone consistently has better reception in areas with lower reception. Mine will drop data and hers will keep 3 bars and a solid data connection. Even in the Verizon store my phone kept fluctuating between 2 bars and 4 bars when all the other phones were a solid 4.
Sent from my XT1060 using xda app-developers app
Definitely the phone. Factory reset to eliminate any software issues and if that doesn't fix request replacement asap
I was worried about my Moto X when I first got it, at home where my VZW Gnex had full bars my new VZW Moto X only had 2?
Once I got to work and found I not only had full bars of 3G where my Gnex would only get a couple, I get 4G almost everywhere in the plant!
You can't go by bars.. you have to look at the signal strength values.
Using an app like Advanced Signal Status to compare, the X pulls a little better signal than the ONE, which pulls a better signal than the Galaxy S4.
I notice it. I've never seen my X with full bars.I have a network extender and in the same room with it? 3 bars max.d

Here is my phone vs a Galaxy S3 sitting side by side. I don't really understand the values. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The larger the db number the better the signal. -78 is slightly better than -83.
Sent from my Moto X.
So if that's the case then the Moto X has lower reception than the Galaxy S3.
I'm not sure if this is related, but people have been complaining that my voice keeps cutting out. Again, not usual for Verizon in the West Los Angeles area...

The voice cutting out is probably not a reception issue. It's a known problem with the echo cancelling parameters and Motorola has fixed it with a software update which T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T have pushed out. Not sure when Verizon's getting it though.

Correct. A more negative number means worse. And based on those shots, the GS3 is pulling better signal.
For CDMA/EVDO, you're usually good until you reach about -103 to -105 dBm. So again, based on that screen shot, your voice breaking up would not be due to signal. At least not if the call was made while you had that signal.
Thanks for your help!
Would love if more people could post their results and the city they were in so we can see if this is a widespread issue.

I'm in Ottawa and my speeds are a little wacky. The first night I had LTE service I hit 40mbps, bit now its steady around 16-18 or so.
Should i expect my most recent tests or should i be looking for higher than that?

Were in Ottawa are you? Im in Kanata and have yet to see lte speeds. im in an ongoing battle with rogers to get lte here. they told me were there towers were in Kanata i went there and nada. i know hunt club and merivale is a strong signal as is baseline and woodroff were their flagship store is. I have gotten decent speeds here and there but i dont believe there network is even half functional. i bought my phone in Toronto in oct and the lte speeds were pretty consistent and coverage was fairly accurate in terms of their coverage map.
First they said my device was defective even though it worked fine in Toronto. So i bought a sierra wireless lte modem and had the same results to prove to them it wasnt a device issue. then i drove to there towers with google maps on my screen to show them my position and the fact that my phone was in edge and sometime 3g at best and emailed rogers tech support pics as well.
There supposed to send a tech out again tomorow but at this point im not very optimistic.
As you can see in the pic when lte works its great the speeds there are from toronto and 2 are from ottawa, just not anywhere near me lol, other pics are of my position less than 100 meters from the towers and you can see the network its on 4g if lucky otherwise edge (tower is corner of campeau and teron other one is castlefrank and 417)
Also do you have issues with the phone when it tries to switch between 4g and lte?
I live in sandy hill and work downtown. I hit 4g downtown but 90% of the time I'm on LTE at home which is pointless as I have WiFi.
Sent from my HTC-X710a using XDA App
i haven't really noticed anything when they switch, but i'm not really aware of when it does.
what i have noticed is that when i'm on LTE my signal kinda dwindles, but its not unusable. its actually more functional than with full strength on 4g.
So I figured out why I was getting such low speeds on my tests. I was running off a Montreal server so it was skewing my results.
After using the Ottawa server my results improved drastically. The top 3 are after I switched to the Ottawa network.
I am impress.
LTE for the win.

Im in the same boat, for some reason speedtest and alot of other cell signal apps put me in montreal as my location when trying to figure out my location via cell signal. funny thing is it only happens when in lte, wonder if this is some sort of bug? when i change it to ottawa speed def picks up.
Also rogers is having issues with their lte they gave me 50%off my bill for 6 months so i pay 25$ for 10 gb and 25$ for my north america unlimited plan, may be worth calling in for you as well
AT&T LTE is about on par with your LTE speeds, cept I haven't managed to get more then 2 bars on LTE.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
I haven't noticed any signal loss or poor call quality so overall I'm impressed so far, other than it nit picking up my LTE in downtown Ottawa. Maybe I'll call rogers after all haha

I've found online that there's a setting the mobile network section to set it to LTE auto. After turning that on I haven't had an issue with my LTE network signal other than it dropping in my office building, but even then it still manages to pump out 15-20meg or so.

So i have been running side by side tests against an at&t skyrocket.
On wifi off he same wifi router the skyrocket gets speeds up to 20k where the note gets a little over 5k. I have tried on a number of routers and get the same results.
On non LTE networks the skyrocket gets on average DOUBLE the speed.
Quadrant shows my note at 3900 and the SR at 2600. Which is in line with what I have seen on the web. Unconnected to the above, but I wanted to see if I have a dud note. I don't.
Anyone know why? Does the skyrocket have a newer or different radio chip?
Anyway, I am prepared to bet that the at&t note will be faster than the international one we currently have.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
The Note doesn't have LTE (the korean Note has). It has HSDPA (21 Mbps). Why the Wifi is slower than on your Skyrocket is another question. I have no idea.

Next time you do a side by side do a real world test:...simultaneously download graphic heavy sites. The difference is negligible.

I don't have an LTE phone to compare to, but i can tell you i have no problem exceeding 20k on wifi with the note.
So it could be my radio. What rom and radio build do u have

Again... there's low correlation between those synthetic app scores and real world speed performances of the phones.
I've done side by side tests of Note and Skyrocket. Speedtests bear out exactly what your saying. But... Ive Then immediately downloaded say desktop gizmodo.com site simultaneously and Note actually downloads faster half the time.

Your local tower/site might be being upgraded to LTE. If so, you should expect some down time. My site literally went offline for a few days (100% roaming on Verizon) until they finished whatever upgrade they were doing. Got LTE about a week later. But as stated, your mileage may vary.

My S4 is the same speed on 3g as my Evo 4G LTE and as our S3. I used Speedtest to verify. I'd take the phone into a Sprint store and run Speedtest on it compared to their display model. Turn wireless off on both phones first, of course.

I'm coming from a Nexus S 4G too and this phone has so much better reception, especially wifi. Don't really get LTE that often though, which is kind of disappointing because I actually had pretty good WiMAX coverage. But I know LTE coverage will only get better with time.
Signal != Data speed. If your signal is good but your data speed is slow, it's most likely that the sector is overloaded or the site is currently backhaul limited. It sounds like the site you connect to hasn't had Network Vision upgrades yet. Go familiarize yourself with Network Vision over at s4gru.com.
Call sprint before you return it. I had the same thing. I had great signal with my HTC Evo 3d and when I switched to the S4, I was dropping calls like crazy and with 1 bar or no signal. Found out that they were updating the towers and I also have 4g in my area now. Woot!

I get speeds like THIS ^ here in North Central Florida/Tallahassee .... I lost ALL of my screenshots due to my G2 locking up - just lost recovery after flashing a kernel & had to revert .... meaning LOST EVERY-THING on my sdcard .... but I have a lot from my GNEX with CONSISTENT speeds just like these !!! Point being, I get these speeds on my G2 but I only have proof of them from my GNEX running KK
I was in the mall the other day, stopped @ a T-Mobile kiosk to check out the S5 .... the dude asked me what I had in my hand .... then, what carrier (VZW) then he asked what speeds I get with LTE. I told him I ~average~ 50-65+MB/down while topping out at over 80MB/down at times - HE COULDN'T BELIEVE ME .... Soooo, I showed him my GNEX w/KK screenshots .... dropped his jaw

I've gotten download speeds of up to 55mbps and upload of 22mbps when I was first testing my area for the best 4G LTE tower to point my directional YAGI antenna at ( I have no high speed internet options other than VZW 4G, so I use a Wilson 4G signal amplifier and YAGI antenna to get a high speed connection in a fringe area). Theoretical limit of current 4G LTE is 100mbps down / 50 mbps up so your numbers look pretty good. Remember though that if the cell you are in gets a lot of traffic your rate can drop off dramatically. When I test my connection now I usually run about 15/20mbps down and 8/12mbps up. Next gen LTE ups the max rates to 150 down / 75 up I believe, but I think the biggest changes coming in 5G are smarter bandwidth coordination between cell towers and more dynamic bandwidth and load management.

Have you ever used a AT&T SIM (AT&T, Go Phone, Straight Talk, Aio Wireless, etc) in your phone?

Weird... Try going to Settings->Tethering & Networks->Mobile Networks and make sure Global data roaming is off, System Select is LTE/CDMA, and Access Point Names is set to VZWINTERNET... If that doesn't work, I would take it in to the local Verizon store, this is not normal and could be an indication that your EFS partition is corrupted.

Yes... H means HSPA(+) that's what you get when your on high speed (non-LTE) data on GSM. A VZW G2 will only get LTE on AT&T in about 13 markets in the US as that is the only places they have Band 4 LTE, I don't remember them all but Google can fetch a list of them pretty quick I'm sure.
