So basically,
If I'm on a call over bluetooth, or on speakerphone, everything works fine until I have another call come in. Whether I decline the call or let it go to voicemail, the current call I have goes to handset audio. I can bring it back to bluetooth or speaker phone by changing to to handset, then back to bluetooth or speakerphone.
This has been happening since I got the phone, and even after a factory reset. It's absolutely killing me. I wanted to see if anyone has had this happen to have the same issue.
So after going through a second phone and being able to replicate the issue, I learned that something happened with Skype that caused this to happen. I believe it to be something to do with having Google Voice automatically roll over to Skype when I don't answer my primary number. I have since disabled it and everything seems to be working fine!

Every time my wife calls she says she can't hear me for perhaps 2-3 seconds after I think the call has connected.. My previous phone did not do this, but the Nexus One does.
Anyone heard of this, and have any suggestions? I have Google Voice call on by default, but she's calling my cell number so I don't think it'd affect anything. As far as I can tell, the call is connected, but she can't hear me say anything for several seconds. I usually wind up going "Hello? Hello? Hello?" and she finally answers.
Glad to see I am not the only one this happens to..well not glad but i just hope this means its not just my phone.
I know when they call one of my numbers (either Google Voice or Cell Phone # not sure which) it says incoming call from <Name> press 1 to answer and press 2 to send to voicemail
@sandtiger
this is from google voice it is a filter setting you can change by going to to the setting on the google voice website.
But this is a different issue (im assuming) then the OP

Yeah, I think I muddied the waters mentioning Google Voice, but these are calls directly to me cell number..
I might try disabling Google Voice just for S&G just to see what happens.. Seems when I place calls, they're connected when I expect them to be, but the delay could be more critical when answering.
I haven't yet, but going to try calling myself from my work phone to see what kind of delay I'm hearing.
I am having this problem also...did you ever find a solution?
Using BT headset by any chance?
In that case, it's normal.
Nope, no headset. Just the phone.
I need to test some more, but I think this has gone away for me.. Delay answering, plus the other party was "dropping out" often, ie: if it got quiet on their end, their voice disappeared entirely, and sometimes faded in or out while doing so.
Only thing I've changed is I disabled Google Voice as being my default call method, but this thread is about answering calls so I doubt it matters, especially since the calls were directly to my cell number not my GV number.
I might turn GV back on the way I had it and test some more, but maybe it was something weird with AT&T?
Im noticing this problem too, both on 2.1 and 2.2.
It seems to be a problem specific to AT&T N1's.
I also experience this. I've adjusted to swiping the answer button, pausing, then saying "Hello." I typically pause about 0.75 or 1 full second, and rarely do I need to do it longer.
The opposite seems to be true of the vibrate-on-connect feature: about 1 second after the person picks up, then the phone vibrates in my hand. How is that useful?! =P
I'm having problems with the internal microphone on my n1.
I've always had issues of people complaining they cannot hear me clearly. Also when I initially answer a phone call, my first "hello" is almost never heard by the person calling. These are however not my main problem.
Today nobody could hear me no matter if i called them or they called me. I rebooted the phone to no avail. However when I put it on speaker phone, they could hear me. When I voice search, it recognizes my voice just fine. So I don't know why it only doesn't work for voice calls.
Anyone ever encounter this?
Anyone have any ideas?
Send it back for repair?
I have in call sound problems.
When I reboot I can sometimes place one call without problems for as long as I want.
Other calls after that I have no sound, can't hear the call tone and other parties can't hear me.
Also incoming calls, i hear the phone ring but when i answer the other party can't hear me and i can't hear the other party.
The settings for sounds in the accessibility menu and noise reduction etc were off and stayed off. (other forum tips)
I also tried numerous factory resets with no avail
Can someone give me a hint how to fix it?
I have stock 4.2.2 International version of the S4 Active.
Baseband I9295XXUBMK2
Build JDQ39.I9295XXUBMK2
Kernel 3.4.0-2015525
Headset
I tried a different option. I can call with my bluetooth headset.
When i switch to speaker the in call sound drops. giong back to headset will not activate in call sound.
Same Here
The same happens to me. Only the bluetooth option works every time. I have tried several firmware and kernel versions and nothing has changed.
There is a workaround that I could find but it is totally impractical: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2371034
In forums for models / ROMs with a lot more users than this one (Nexus / CM) people with 4.2.2-based firmware versions there are many posts describing what could seems to be the exact same problem, which they have been able to fix via baseband updates or custom patches, but that does not really seems to be an option for the S4 Active...

Same problem with my SGS4A. I was on i9295XXUBMK2, tried to update using the phone update option, which rendered my phone unusable. Flashed new stock ROM i9295XXUBMK3, now I can use the phone, although sound problem persists.
Making a call: reboot, call
Receiving a call: answer, hang-up, reboot, call back
Anyone with 4.3 that has this problem on SGS3, SGS4 or SGS4A?
Edit 21.8.2014
I had the speaker changed last week and so far no problems. I am slowly getting confident that I can rely on S4A as a phone also, not just tiny surf tablet.
I have same phone, never got this pb. However I got some SD card issues after updating to KitKat...
Partial solution... for me at least
Hi guys ,
having same issue, disabling 4G option solves my problem. But it-s impractic cause I want to use the 4g... in a huawei phone I solved same issue by disabling an option of "mobile data always on"
Don't know how it's related...
Same issue for me. I made lots of research with no results. Nobody knows...
same problem here with no solution yet

same problem with in call and out call .... searched a lot about solution and no solution yet
I had a similar issue with bluetooth calls. First call would be fine, but after that I couldn't hear the other person on the line and they couldn't hear me. It turned out to be some kind of incompatibility with the Google "OK Google" detection with Galaxy S4-based phones. If I disabled it from detecting "From any screen", this seemed to correct the problem. However the setting might return on application updates. I would recommend trying that and see if it makes a difference. If it's not that, then I don't really know how to help you. I moved on from that phone over a year ago and have been happier ever since.
I have a problem with incoming calls, sometimes when try to call me it say's my phone is turned off, when it's not (I can call out without any problems)
Signal is fine and i can call out but people have problems calling me.
I don't get it.

It may not related to the hardware nor software of your phone. I've been facing this problem since I was on my old Sony Ericsson K770i. People can't reach as if my phone was turned off. However it happens occasionally. Yes, until today, same things happen but only occasionally. The only thing I can blame is my service provider.
But odds do happen. It might have something to do with your device. Does it happen everywhere you go?
I am frequently experiencing that when I try to call or if someone is calling me, they cannot hear me but I can hear them clearly. When I try calling through Facebook Messenger, everything works fine though. It looks like the mic is losing functionality when calling through GSM. If I restart my phone, the mic works again as it should. I don't want to keep restarting my phone to make me heard in a call. Any suggestion what the problem might be? I have already reset my phone twice.
I have the same message.. Any solutions

I have the same problem. Phone has been sent in for service twice, now it is on its third travel. First time they just checked it and found nothing. No surprise, cause its not always a problem. Second time they changed the microphone and something else, but when I received it there was still no functioning microphone.
I have also heard others with same problem. Huawei should really look into it.
Happens if you switch from private space back to standard. Also may be linked to "always listening" Google assistant. Had the same problem on my ZTE Axon 7. It's software not hardware.
Restart if you have to use private spaces and also look what other apps may have mic access.

Solution?
Hey did you find a solution for this as this is driving me insane. I'm missing important phone calls as they can't hear me but if I call through WhatsApp or messenger it's fine. Tried everything I can think of.
