As a previous owner of Samsung's Captivate, and Infuse I have had plenty of experience of how bad GPS can get.
Also having owned the Note 1 and Note 2 I was able to realize just how AWESOME GPS/GLONASS can be! My S2 was somewhere in between.
With EACH of the previous 5 AT&T devices I always left WI-FI assistance OFF for better accuracy with at times down to single digits of feet using a purchased app called GPS TEST PLUS.
Enter my two day old Note 3. It sees more than twenty satellites like my earlier Notes, but doesn't use nearly as many. GPS on Note 3 also seems to go to sleep in less than a couple minutes whereas all 5 earlier Galaxies didn't.
Google Maps starts to hone in and gets within several yards and then jumps a mile or so away before coming close again.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled gps app. Cleared/renewed agps data.
Full factory reset also without any improvement.
Accurate GPS is critical to me for marine navigation using Navionics app a couple of weeks each year on rental boats in FL Keys. Last spring we broke down and I sent owner an edited screen shot for him to come tow us.

Yes, I have noticed the same thing. Not sure what do about. I have also noticed that my signal quality is really lower than it used to be on Galaxy Note 2, as well.

Considering return within 14 days. Not acceptable for me especially if custom ROMs won't be available to improve upon.
Have not compared GN 1,2,& 3 FCC diagrams to see if GPS antenna was moved.

I also have the same issue. I explained this to an att store that the gps is half as good as it was on my s4 or note 2. Lock on in maps kept going in and out and when i drove, my arrow would be driving over houses. All they said was they can't do anything because they can see anything wrong. While maps is open it locks on but accuracy keeps fading in and out. Again i said well it's more noticeable when driving. He said that i should take a photo of it happening... and that Gps accuracy is normal within 100 feet. I looked at him in disgust and repeated "normal within 100 feet?". I basically lost my sh*t immediately after that grabbed my phone out of his hand and walked out. I have no idea what to do.

That's exactly what I would like to know, because I have a similar issue. For me, using google maps works great until it suddenly says "GPS Signal Lost" and stops working. If I turn off GPS and turn it back on, it gets a fix again pretty quickly, but this shouldn't happen so often. It happens at least once every time I use maps, and often it will happen multiple times.
I have the "GPS Essentials" app so I ran it alongside google maps and checked it when the signal got lost. The satellites basically went from a count of about 17 down to 0 and then started adding themselves back.
I was going to exchange my phone for an exact replacement tomorrow. But if this is a software issue or an issue effecting the hardware on all phones, then it doesn't make sense to exchange it. I'd really like to pinpoint the issue exactly. Has anyone managed to get rid of this issue completely?
Someone should try exctracting a old version of maps from a note 2 or note 1 rom, uncheck auto update in the play store and see if the older version of maps is any better or if it will even work. I'll give it a try.
I just exchanged my phone today for a new one because of the GPS issues I was having. I used google maps navigation twice since and didn't hear "GPS signal lost" once. Seems like my new one doesn't have the GPS problem, but it may be too soon to tell. It could just be that a significant portion of the Note 3's out there have buggy GPS chips and my new one has a good one.
Another thought I had was maybe it has something to do with software we all have installed. Did everyone who had this problem root their phones? My old phone was rooted with Root De La Vega. I also froze AT&T navigation. I'm hoping the problem doesn't return when I root the new phone and install all my apps, but we shall see.
Having mobile data "on" helped me improve the GPS signal on my Note 3
Thanks for posting your experiences.
My phone has been on repairs twice with no improvement. I will go back to the store tomorrow and give them one more chance to solve the issues before returning it permanently.
I love the phone in every possible way except for the poor gps. It looses the fix constantly even in places where the sky is clear and reception should be perfect.
Below is an example of note 3 vs S4 running the "GPS Status & Toolbox" app. Worth noting is that the Note 3 had been searching for a fix for 20 minutes while the S4 was booted up just seconds prior to the photo:
i43.tinypic.com/2a7781g.jpg (copy paste in browser)
Both phones having the same settings enabled (wifi, gps) and swapping their positions did nothing to improve the situation. 1 minute after the photo was taken the S4 was down to 3m accuracy. Note 3 never goes below 10.

I had the same issue, except I would lose the GPS signal every time I plugged the phone in. I would have a good signal then plug it in and it would drop the GPS. Even the GPS icon would disappear. I took it to the ATT store and they exchanged it. I don't have that issue anymore, although my compass app seems way and useless.

So that's more evidence that the hardware may be to blame... unless you had a profile manager or something that launched conflicting software when the phone was plugged in. Seems like poor QA on the GPS chips to me.
About your compass issue, I think you have to rotate the phone at least twice around each axis to get that to calibrate. Although that may be just with certain apps.
So I installed maps apk from a note 1 rom so I'll give it a try and report back if it is any better. Its a long shot but worth a try.

Just an update...
I rooted my phone again and installed all my apps, and my GPS still works perfectly. So basically my software stack is the exact same as it was when I had issues, but now the hardware is all new. This tells me the software is not to blame, and the GPS issue is most likely caused by a crappy GPS chip with poor quality control.
A word of advice: If you have GPS issues in your Note 3 and you're still within the 2 week window AT&T gives you for returning the phone, exchange it for a new one. It seems to have fixed my problem.

I was a pre-order (received it on the 4th) so I'm well past the 2 week window. I didn't really use the GPS until after I rooted with the initial Root De La Vega (MI1 FW). Then I noticed just terrible GPS performance (jumping around, poor refresh, losing lock, etc.) I re-rooted using the MI9 FW, and my GPS performance improved dramatically. My compass is still terrible. But I can navigate with Gmaps without always jumping to different streets. Just my experience.

Hi all,
just wanted to know whether you experienced any GPS improvements after the update?
Mine seems to be functioning a a lot better, however, it turns off by itself after like 10-15min of use. The little satellite dish disappears and I lose GPS tracking even though the GPS is turned on in the notification bar. I have to turn it off then on and it starts working again but it's annoying as hell.
Anyone else experiencing this?
GPS test
I used it today for about 1,5 hour, while driving.
It took a few minutes to start up. It was pretty precise in nav mode.
I lost the GPS signal one time, where I also lost the data connection. (At the time i was also playing with the phone.
Over all a good experience.
Tried yesterday, found satellites instantly, can keep gps lock, but still have some accuracy issue.
i used it on the way to work today with track booster and it seemed much better
however i tried again on the way home to test and lost data connection
once you loosed connection you dont seem to be able to get it back you have to restart the phone which is annoying
i will not say its fixed untill i have used it more and got consistant result
Just as bad as ever here, not locking many sats and still keeps losing them.
I can def use the phone for turn by turn navigation now, which is a massive plus.
But after working flawlessly for a couple min, it loses the GPS connection and doesn't even attempt to reconnect.
I then switch GPS off, then back on and it's working again.
This has got to be a software glitch.
still very bad. sometimes it simply cannot get a lock at all. this happens away from buildings and under clear sky. sometimes it gets a lock instantly but loses it quite quickly.

I had the minor annoyances like others, but this morning my alarm did not go off and I was late for work.
When I unlocked the lock screen, there was a message along the lines of "Clock stopped responding...".
How the $%&# does the alarm clock on a smart phone just freeze up?
IOS had the summer-time shift screw-ups but this kind of error is very disappointing.
I will now set up a back-up alarm as I cannot trust the GN3 any more with the alarm.

I use one of the many alarm clock apps on Google Play that require me to answer a question before I'm allowed to turn off the alarm. But I've never has the stock alarm clock crash on any Android device I've ever used.

I use the stock alarm on an unrooted N3 and I've never had this problem.
However, if I need to wake up for anything important, I would never trust just one alarm device of any sort.
I've never had an alarm fail on either of my android devices (excepting cases of user error).
I've had the phone entirely decide to turn itself off while charging once (with my note 3), but it's only happened once, and I can't be sure that there isn't a mundane explanation for this. Failure rate for me is much lower than with my old alarm.
I've had this happen. Also having other issues with GPS, Bootup (rebooting twice sometimes) Lags, and freezes a lot.
I have started all over twice (Factory restore / Kies and others) I have rooted, unrooted and gone back to stock still having the same issues.
The biggest thing for me is the loss of GPS signal. I can't take it anymore. $399.00 for the phone. $299.00 for the watch, and we have these problems. SO, I called At&t today (Been with them for 18 years) and let them have a piece of my mind. Long story short, I have a replacement coming to my job tomorrow. Get this, you wont be receiving a brand new Note 3. They are refurbished certified At&t devices. You keep your battery and back cover, pen, cables, basically anything I can take off the phone, I need to keep. I went ahead and said yes. DO IT.
I will report back if the replacement has this Alarm issue along with all my others (GPS BIG ISSUE)......Maybe there are bad batches from production floating around. I had one of them????? We shall see tomorrow.

Fed Ex will be here soon and I will have another one (Factory fixed and hardware/radios replaced)
Its a production issue I heard. I'm not the only one going through this.
Rooted or Non-Rooted doesn't madder. And I don't do a lot of mods or tweaking.
I have been doing this for years. There really is a bad batch of Note 3's out there and I wont have one in a couple of hours.
Their giving me 10 days to send it back. I can't wait to get what I paid for. A working GPS, better reception, new modem and more.

Okay.....This replacement phone freaking fly's guy's. No kidding, I see a huge difference in everything I do. Now I know why people love this phone.
I honestly had a defective device. Now its time to check the GPS out....
Another thing I noticed was the version numbers when taking the back cover off. The bad one had Ver 2 - 2 everything.
This replacement had Ver 1 - 1 with the radio Ver 4 - 4.... I think this is one of the first Note 3's made with the latest radio and other pieces installed. Its freaking fast fellas. I'm not rooting or doing anything to this thing.
Where are you seeing these version numbers at? I didn't see any. Looked under battery too. Did see that my phone was made in Korea.

I had 2 VZW Moto Xs and they rocked. About 10 days ago I switched to TMO Moto Xs and the GPS loses lock on both of them. Much like the first set, they get lock very quickly, but both the TMO units acted strangely during nav and when I installed GPS Status I see that the GPS gets lock, the coordinates are displayed, then about 10 sec later it searches for lock again, the coordinates aren't returned, and then it relocks.
This causes a real usability issue when it comes to navigation. If it was one of these I'd think I had a dud, but the VZW units worked fine and the TMO units both have this bug.
Has anyone seen similar issues?

I use gps daily and i've only come across an issue with it 2x when i went to New York City. basically, it was putting my location all over the map, as if it couldnt find me. Im guessing the high rise buildings had something to do with it.
as far as gps losing lock, I have notice that as well. I never toggle it off and yet I have to turn it maybe once/twice a month
The lock problem I have is pretty continuous, and restarting doesn't seem to help. Wondering I'd there was a bad run somehow.

Not yet... but it seems out of place.
My history with GPS "not quite working" was about it being extremely hit and miss about detecting me driving. When this would happen, I'd notice problems with Maps as well.
After a factory reset, it all worked fine. But as soon as I reinstalled Yelp, the issue returned. I'm not certain that yelp is the culprit as in hindsight, I really didn't confirm proper operation after the reset for a long enough period of time given the intermittent nature of the problem.
Next step is to try and determine if two of these same processes is normal, and if not, which one doesn't belong, and where it's coming from. There is a thread in the Moto forums I started. One person there who sees only one occurrence of the process stated his is 120k in size. One of my posts also has a list of all my third party apps that use location services. It would be helpful to know which apps are in common with folks having this issue. The thread is at:

When you say 'reset', do you mean reset or just rebooting your phone?
BTW, I have no LocationServices on my Nexus 4, so these seem to be Moto's binaries, which makes sense.
Would appreciate you keeping us posted if this continues to address the issue and causes no additional problems.

I have the same problem. XT1053 on T-Mobile constantly loses GPS signal while driving. Happens in wide open areas with no buildings. I have tried wiping the device and not installing any additional apps and have the same results. I can be sitting at a traffic light have GPS signal, lose it for a few seconds then get it back without having moved.
Here is a poorly shot video of this happening. I will try and get something more clear tomorrow.

I returned my phone for this issue yesterday. I had navigation issues along with the drive assist problem. While driving maps world just stop. If I was at a turn and turned left the map would stay stuck at the turn long after I turned. It eventually would catch up. Loosing and gaining lock would perfectly explain this.
Update: I got a replacement phone. The new phone has the same problems. May be a bit worse.

Been chasing this one for a while and still think this isn't hardware related (lots of Nexus 5 users seeing this on KK as well).
My latest theory, which I have yet to disprove, is that the GPS data downloaded from some cell towers (this is the A in AGPS) is either wrong, or is somehow getting corrupted.
When this happens to me, turning on airplane mode immediately restores a quick and persistent lock. And using GPS Status to reset/erase the AGPS data returns normal operation... for a while.
It's like the initial fix info is fighting with the actual GPS readings. As soon as you turn off the cell towers, or clear the data they are providing, all is well.
I am in T-Mobile fringe area and see it fairly often. So far it has always cleared up by trying the above.
This is am interesting theory. I will check it out a bit. Most interesting is the idea that the agps data structure may be slightly different for kitkat v ICS, and that it may also be different for TMO. The main idea supporting this (though purely anecdotal) is that it does happen on both my tmo Xs but neither of my VZW Xs.

I got my original Note 4 last Sunday. Since I use GPS navigation quite often, it is always one of the first things I check out when getting a new device. I found that it didn't hold a lock for long, it takes a long time to get a lock again, and when it does lock it's not accurate at all. I got an exchange today, and the same exact thing is happening with my new unit. A friend told me this would be the best place to come for help. She mentioned that rooting and custom romming might be the fix. I haven't rooted since my MyTouch 4G, and I've never used a rom. Can I get some help with that?
Also, I've tried waze instead of Google maps and that didn't help. And yes, high accuracy is turned on.
Thanks in advance!
Bump - any advice? On a different forum, someone mentioned downloading a GPS fix app from the Play Store. I did that, and I'll check it out on the way home from work. But ultimately I'd like a device with strong GPS natively. I'll try to exchange it one more time. I find it really weird that I'm the only one that seems to be having these problems!

Yes, on both devices.
Are you the same penguin from the a/c forums?
Sorry to hear you're still having gps issues with your replacement phone. Silly question, but is high accuracy mode selected in the location settings? Is wifi enabled?
Have you tried installing GPS Status? How many satellites can you lock onto?

Yep, I'm the very same penguin . High accuracy mode is indeed enabled. I haven't tried it with wifi enabled, I usually disable it when I leave home to conserve battery life. I'll try keeping it enabled on my commute home tonight. I've installed GPS status and it locks on to like 13ish out of 20ish satellites (it fluctuates a bit) when I'm stationary so that's not a problem. I haven't tried seeing how many lock on when I'm driving since I don't want to fiddle with my phone that much when I'm on the road. I'm still trying to get one more replacement before my 14 days are up, but the day is approaching quickly, and none of the 7 or 8 stores in my immediate area ever have any in stock! I call every other day and I'm sure I'm driving the reps crazy lol.
I've had this same issue with my first Note 4 on TMo but replaced it last week and havent had any issues besides very occasionally having a slight hang after making a turn and the GPS not registering it for a few hundred feet.
On my first note 4 it would CONSTANTLY lose GPS signal and be wildly inaccurate (not recognizing my turns or the proper facing direction) but hopefully *knock on wood* its been fixed with my new phone. I know you've already exchanged it but...
If you find a fix, please post it here just in case
I had the same problem with the GPS, it was working only on wifi but not with the phone data. But after a full flash it is working fine again. Also, it was very laggy since the first day.
I had a thread around here for similar GPS issue.
I actually got a PM from someone called SamsungSupport.
Anyway I think this is a compass calibration issue.
I installed the GPS Status app and recalibrated the compass.
The next time I used it (yesterday), I didn't have any issues.
I don't know if it has resolved the problem and I'll keep monitoring it whenever I use GPS.
I got my second replacement yesterday, and it's even worse than my initial replacement!! It's as bad as my first device.
I chatted t-mo customer care today and they were of no help. They kept advising me to do the same troubleshooting issues I've already done. Then, I chatted Samsung care and the rep was A LOT more helpful than the previous Samsung rep I spoke with. Samsung has a remote app that you can download from the Play Store, and the Samsung rep can remote into your device and see what you're seeing. We couldn't do much at the time since I'm at work, but I'm set to chat them back right before I leave work. They're going to remote in with me and actually see the issue that I'm having while driving. HOPEFULLY a fix will come out of all this!!
Bump. I'm on my FOURTH replacement now, same issues. What is going on?? So far, I've:
Recalibrated the compass
Tightened the screws underneath the battery door (they seemed pretty tight anyway)
Samsung support reps haven't been able to work with me using the Smart Tutor (remote into my phone to see/manipulate what's on my screen) app. They always disconnect the session before I get on the road, or maybe the session just drops.
Factory resets
Clearing the cache
I got my firmware reflashed at a Samsung kiosk at Best Buy
Make sure high accuracy mode is enabled (these days I never take it off since I'm always fiddling with my GPS)
Tried a number of gps fix apps in the play store
They want me to send in the phone for repair, but I have this nagging feeling that they're going to turn it on, see that gps can indeed get a lock, and send it back. Plus, there's no guarantee that T-Mobile will have a smartphone loaner phone, since they say that those phones keep disappearing because there's only a $50 deposit, so people just take the phones (this is why we can't have nice things). Since no one else is reporting these issues, it's doubtful that Samsung is working on a software fix for it. I'm really REALLY enjoying this phone otherwise, but I NEED gps to work!!
Samsung Note 4 Issue with Waze
I just upgraded from the Note 3 to the Note 4 two days ago and I have the same issue. It took me a few hours but I figured what they have done. They have program the Note 4 for totally hands free driving and if you want to use a GPS program it will be the one they have. You have to activate CAR MODE and you will see and hear your Waze in the background come on line and start to work correctly. Then if you close their program quickly, you will see Waze running correctly for about 5 seconds and the go back to acting up without GPS signal. The GPS signal with high accuracy is tied to the CAR MODE.
TMOBILE will never offer a smartphone loaner as per policy. GPS works fine not sure what ur doing
BAD ASS NOTE 4 + BAD ASS GEAR S
Seem to be having an issue that I can't take care of that I've tried everything that I know that I believed could be causing the drops. The issue I'm having is any time I turn the screen off while driving my GPS will lose its connection after about 5 minutes. I was also losing data so I figured it was an application causing that issue with that problem I got resolved by removing the battery saving application called battery guru. That was actually shutting my data connection off with my screen off so I got rid of that completely but I still seem to have the problem with my GPS drops. My data stays up just fine but it seems like clockwork every 5 minutes the screens off I'm driving and I get that voice GPS connection lost. All I have to do is click the back button in Google Maps and reload my route and BAM its right back up and going. Now I can leave the screen on and I will not lose the GPS signal whatsoever until I turn the screen off. Have went through all the settings that I know of and of course the only battery saving application that I had installed and I can't seem to find the issue. I also use the search tool and couldn't find anyone else with a problem like mine. Does anyone have any suggestions or have seen this on their device? I'm beginning to think this may be a hardware issue I'm not sure. But if it was a hardware issue you would think I would be losing the connection all the time not with just the screen off which leads me back to a software issue. I'm going to keep freezing apps with titanium to see if I can find another culprit. I just don't have anything else installed that should have anything to do with that. Thanks in advance for any help for insight you may have.

Is called a nexus. Google stock has always had that issue. Unfortunately nexus users spend most of the time locked in a basement and never happen to use gps, therefore they will say their gps works just fine.

Really? Interesting. Don't remember that on my galaxy nexus but don't know that I ever used the gps honestly. Anyone else confirm this?

My GPS on my Nexus 6 is and always has been amazing. (Thanks for reminding me to compare that when I get the 6P). I use my GPS daily to keep Waze up when I drive to watch for cops, traffic, etc. Even when I know where I'm going I use it and Google play streaming over Bluetooth and my GPS keeps connection even in Manhattan.
I would recommending getting an app called GPS status, it has a few settings to keep GPS active etc, which should solve your problem. However I have no clue what could cause something like that...
