1) The manual says yes but in reality I have not been able to? YET?
2) the crystal used is made from sapphire glass so cannot only be scratched by either another sapphire or a diamond.
3) I think only YOU can answer that, it de[pends on what you want from a smart watch. The Gear is far more advanced but more expensive.
4) Yes, but why would you want to? This sort of negates the purpose doesn't it?
You are welcome. Let us know what you purchase and why.

Thanks for the detailed answer about getting scratched, does it or no

I can think of a few reasons to mute the watch. Sleeping, or in a meeting or class, etc...

1. Yes the phone has to have a data connection to connect to the S-Voice server. If you always have wifi available that will work as well.
2. None so far, but I expect it will happen.
3. I love my Gear, no experience with the others.
4. Yes, you can mute it, set it to vibrate, or adjust the volume to set it at whatever you like.

The Galaxy Gear does not have a sapphire crystal face. Early reports stated it did as well as that it was waterproof, both were proven wrong. Check the manual, it states the screen is glass/acrylic and warns about damage from dropping etc.

Thanks for the support

Hi,
Thank you for this post. The point regarding sapphire glass is driving me crazy. My initial posts here on this subject regarding the use of sapphire glass where to write that I could not see how Samsung could afford to use a sapphire glass at this price range. I was bombarded with post after post saying I was wrong and the crystal used IS sapphire glass.
I detest writing about things I know zero about and I, to date, still cannot find a single line from Samsung that states what that crystal is made from. I have read several reviews that quote the crystal as being made from sapphire but I repeat, nothing, nada, from an official Samsung source.
I don't doubt you for a second. To help me with this can you reference where you got this information from? You mention the manual. I have downloaded and printed the full official manual from Samsung Europe and cannot find a single mention of the crystal? I may have missed it and if that is the case may I ask you the favour of informing me the page number.
I have never believed the Gear had a sapphire crystal yet so many posts here and on other forum plus reviews say it has. Would be simply great if we could clear this matter up so I don't perpetuate misinformation.
Many thanks.

Me too heard it's sapphire glass

No problem, It's in the manual titled "Health & Safety and Warranty Guide" that comes packaged with the Galaxy Gear. Page 16 the heading at the top of the page reads "Display/Touchscreen" and quoted from that page, "WARNING REGARDING DISPLAY The display on your device is made of glass or acrylic and could break if your mobile device is dropped or if it receives a significant impact."

Several of the pre-release blurbs I read stated it was a sapphire crystal and that it was waterproof. I haven't read any official reviews after it was released that continued to state either. I think most of the misinformation can be traced back to the pre-release write-ups from folks that had little first hand experience with the device.

Thank you for the kind and informative reply. I guess different countries have different literature with the watch. I don't have the guide you mentioned?
I would guess this must also be available on line though so will go search for it :good:
Its still odd though as you quote the guide as saying "Made from glass or acrylic".....This makes things even more of a puzzle and raises more questions that it answers. Glass and acrylic are not one and the same. Sapphire is a glass. This still leaves the door open for the crystal, the watch glass, to be made from anything from a plastic to sapphire glass? Its intriguing.
How do you interpret this "Made from glass or acrylic"? They are as different as chalk and cheese . I have doubted from day one that the crystal is sapphire. Its just to expensive and given the size shape and chamfer of the crystal would have made it even more expensive .
I guess we will know soon as if it is glass it will scratch.
Any fellow poster willing to do one of those hideous drop tests to find out? I hope not but.............
Kind regards.

REVIEW: Realook 3D Form Screen Protector

What we dry screen protector users have been waiting for!!!!!!
All the Dry screen protectors until now have been cutting it short around the edges due to the
curved screen of the glass. NOT ANYMORE!!! LOL!
The Realooks 3D curve SP gets pretty darn close to the edges. Not so much that you can't use a case
The only cut outs are for the home button and speaker up top.
Take a look at the pictures below!!!!
I'm pretty damn satisfied with the product. T
I've been using the phone with the S-pen and haven't noticed much scratching at all.
Since the GN2 utilizes the s-pen, I don't like to use wet screen protectors as they leave marks.
The screen protector is optically clear and I didn't notice any rainbow effect.
Finger prints yes, but any clear SP will leave fingerprints. But easily wiped off.
The SP is up for pre-order and should be shipping out by this weekend.
I searched amazon and looks like pre-orders are going on now.

Looks good but the tech Armor sp I had also fit like these. As soon as I put on the diztronic tpu it peeled right up. Not case friendly.

For one thing it says : PLEASE NOTE: This is a PET material Crystal Clear screen protector that is designed to protect flat part of Galaxy Note 2 / II screen - smaller than entire screen.
So it doesn't cover your ENTIRE screen. Only a portion of it (the flat part).
While the 3D one in the OP states that it molds to the screen (+/-)

So this review is the exact same review on the Amazon site. You are the vendor, no? It sure looks that way by the review name used on Amazon. I don't mind a vendor hawking their wares on XDA, but I DO mind not saying as much in the post (making it look as though you are a regular user that is excited about the product or another satisfied user).
If I am wrong about you being affiliated with the company, please say so.
Looks nice. What is the hardness scale? Any proximity sensor issues since it covers them?

no i am not a vendor.
I am in no way making money off of this.
I do reviews and like any other reviewer and we get to a point that allows us to receive items beforehand.
I'm a total OCD gadget freak and if i get a product that I love, then i have no problem sharing with friends on XDA.
If i get a product that I don't like, then i'll share my feelings.
I've been really happy with this company. That is all. If i was the vendor, i would follow the rules on XDA regarding that.
I've been a member of xda with almost 500 posts since i got my galaxy nexus back when it first dropped internationally.
Anyways, I do understand your concern :good: . But back to the topic at hand!
i am also an AVID amazon shopper and i like to help people on Amazon as well... I got lazy and just copy and pasted..
I'm actually thinking of jumping in the pool with the other 90,384,579,034,857 of reviewers on youtube and creating my own channel.
But again, I'm not in anyway affiliated with the vendor nor do i make any money on these types of things.
as far as proximity sensors being affected, i have not noticed any proximity sensor issues.
when i go outside, screen brightens up. when i make a call and bring it up to my head, screen goes dark.
as far as hardness scale, i have no way of testing that. lol

I guess this quote from the Amazon page may answer your question - The surface strength 3H coating will prevent everyday scratches to the LCD screen. I presume that refers to the hardness.

I appreciate the response, however I do note that you clearly have reviewed a number of this company's products on Amazon, and you are now offering this review of a product that hasn't even been released yet. So your relationship is one that allows you to get special perks, such as free stuff to review. I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but you have incentive to give a positive review through this relationship, and therefore, it is biased.
I prefer unbiased reviews myself.

I'll give this one a shot when it comes out. I wasn't a glass protector, but been reading sometimes the adhesive makes them impossible to remove without lifting the screen. I love the feel of my SGP, but hate how small it is compared to the screen

iSmooth protectors buy 1 set, get 1 set free

I just received my iSmooth protectors today, the packaging is really nice and I love the cloth. I am going to install them in a bit and report back. I noticed in the package a little info card and if you post a review of the protector on Amazon and provide all the proof of review and your Amazon order number they send you another set for free with free shipping. I don't recall anyone mentioning this previously so I thought I would share the information. If you e mail them the Amazon order number, Details of the offer can be found here www.iSmooth.com/freepromo you will receive the same item you purchased or you can choose another similar product in their range. Pretty sweet deal, imo, that's 6 protectors and 2 cloths for just under $11

I think I mentioned it before in another post, they include Thank You card with this info. Indeed a very sweet deal, and they just want your honest opinion/review to receive a second set. But as you know, if you don't like the product you will not request for a second set anyway. Btw, did you receive original screen protectors with green cover film or the new ones with a clear cover film?

There's another thread, a review of the protector and there's pictures. You can see the cut, it's a plainly visual difference in size. Older ones have a green tint on the removable film that you peel off. Newer ones aren't green.

Thanks, I already got a reply from Paul and he's sending out a new set. I love the feel and clarity of the protector, I don't like the cut on this one, too much screen exposed. I finally got the tackiness rubbed off and it feels really nice. I pulled off the jlg protector off my mom's phone, the rainbow was really annoying her. Slapped an iSmooth on it, she's happy now.

You gonna love new version. It's on par with Spigen stuff! The width will be similar to green tint ones, but the cutouts around home button and top of the phone are better. It sticks perfectly, crystal clear, no marks from s-pen, no rainbow effects, and very easy to wipe. Not sure if it was just my sample, I did notice some accumulation of fingerprints, but it's so easy to wipe. No different than Spigen oleophobic. The most important, it feels very smooth, not plasticky at all. This clear version is going to be their new screen protector moving forward in a week or so, as told by Paul.

I just know the guy's name is Paul since he replied back to me. Sorry guys, I probably confused a crap out of everybody with my references to "old" versus "new". I just go by how I understood it originally and what others posted in the forum (I think some of those screen protector posts were removed in favor of a new sticky thread?). Just never mind that whole new vs old stuff. I would say order it, and if everything works great and you are happy - then you are done! They give you lifetime guarantee and you will get 2nd set for free with instructions they provide inside of the shipping package. Also keep in mind, everybody has their own opinion and preference. Some like wet install, others dry. Some want tempered glass, others something else. The tricky part with screen protectors, those are not like cases where its easy to try one versus the other, and then you return whatever you like, or keep a few to change it for different occasions, etc. So, if you find one screen protector you like and happy with it - stop driving yourself crazy (i'm speaking from a personal experience) lol!!! Again, just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt lol!!!

You mean coming off the left side of the phone? In general, not just iSmooth, if glass is not clean and/or oily from fingerprints on one side then it might have issues with sticking. Have you tried another screen protector from the pack and do you see the same problem? Make sure you wipe your screen really good. I actually buy one of those eye glass little spray bottles - its amazing how it cleans the screen and even screen protector (it works on both glass and plastic).
From the picture you posted, it looks like the original cut. Paul mentioned only something like 5% of original screens were affected by an issue of not sticking edge. If you remember, Note 2 has a glass that slopes down toward the Home button. That is where the troublesome edge could happen. If you see the second protector doing the same thing, even after you clean the screen, contract them and ask for a replacement new batch.
.... note to myself: check with iSmooth if they are hiring tech support lol!!!

What is the crystal made from?

Does any member have any information regarding the Gears watch Crystal? I doubt it is sapphire glass but ponder if its Corning Gorilla. I ask as I notice some third party brands are already offering screen savers? On a watch though? I can say this with no hesitation if the glass is not strong I will be numero uno to bust it. All my watches have a sapphire crystal for this reason.
What happens when that strap wears out? It appears an integral part of the watch and non replaceable? Again any one know what the strap is made from?
I think in all my years of purchasing technology this is my first without actually seeing the device. Still a fool is soon parted from his money so that's why I am broke again!:silly:

I do hope you are correct. sapphire glass rates only second to diamond in terms of hardness. Sapphire glass costs a fortune though! How the heck have Samsung managed to fit a sapphire glass that size when the glass alone would cover the total cost of the watch?
Why are Samsung so secretive about the specs. I still cannot find 'an official' spec from Samsung that has this information in writing?
No need for screen saver with sapphire glass that a given. I do hope you are correct.:good:
Regards.
Bulk purchasing power, that is how Samsung manages it plus they are likely not making anything off version 1.0 so they can get more sales on the Galaxy Note series they are tied into.
Guess I beat you guys to it.. :|

No confrontation from me at all when I ask where you got that information from? The safety booklet that comes in the box in SOME countries, not this one, says; Glass or acrylic?
How could it be Glass or acrylic, its either one or the other and if Samsung don't know who does?
Again, I would question Coning glass as mine already has minute marks on the glass and I treat my watches with the greatest care and respect, I collect them.
Agggggga, cant we find a definitive answer to this?
Thanks for your input though. Please do let us know where this information comes from.
Kind regards.
I asked my Samsung rep he said gorilla 3

Nothing official then or printed on a Samsung site? Reps will and do say anything. I have no idea where your rep got his info' from?
The warranty book that comes in the box in most countries states the crystal is made from Glass or acrylic? Don't ask I have no idea.
One chap I asked said the crystal was "Some sort of glass and the camera lens is acrylic"?
Absurd not being able to ascertain such basic information in writing from Samsung. I have now put mine back in its box until some screen savers arrive. I don't want to risk scratching that large screen, would detract from the looks.
Regards
I haven't even been able to use it for more than one day. Watch is sitting in its box back home, will contact my service provider once am back from my trip..

Same with me. Add to the lack of consumer knowledge regarding the crystal I am seeing more and more posts regarding the lens misting up.
This has been due to perspiration. I live in the hottest country in Europe and just a walk to the post box can make one sweat especially under ones watch. My concern is that lens plus those bare contacts, will they short out? No exposed electronics like moisture!
Have got to the point where I am just not using the watch, I just don't need this hassle-worry right now. Like many others I have a waiting list of problems and a wrist watch will have to join the end of a long list of far high prioritise.
Best wishes.
I have a few micro scratches on my watch face now. I had a cheap screen protector on it for all of last week and I removed it Saturday because I thought that the glass was sapphire. Well it must not be, because I wiped the dust off of the face with my shirt and now I have a few scratches. They are very small but I can see them in the right lighting.

Hi, From posts I am reading it certainly appears the crystal is not sapphire. At this price I thought it impossible even though a few posters assured me it was sapphire.
I have already re ordered some screen savers BUT screen savers on a watch? The problem is the crystal is raised so will attract every tiny mark as yours has done. Add this to the camera misting up, the clasp being the most unreliable type of design possible, poor IP protection and the Gear is already a hard ware nightmare.
I will probably be purchasing the Sony 11 when it arrives here as already I am seeing in some other countries the price has dropped.
Overall I suspect the gear was rushed into production without research and development just to try and be the first of its type on the market regardless of some very poor design faults. On this occasion Samsung has not impressed me.
Oh BTW, why has Samsung introduced the Note 3 some weeks ago yet we are still waiting to see any official Samsung accessories like the numerous covers we have been promised? I think Samsung has feelings or grandeur and is due a fall. Did you know all Note 3 are region locked and Samsung is about to do this with the S4 etc?
No idea why a brand would deliberately alienate its customer base like this.
I am still unable to ascertain from Samsung what the crystal is actually made from.
Kind regards.

I don't even think the watch face is crystal at all. It feels like some degree of plastic in all honesty. You would expect crystal to feel hard and cold which this doesn't. I have Omega and other Swiss watches and their faces feel a lot better. I wouldn't get your hopes up that the face is made up of quality components. Its price is just too low for that.

Indeed so. Your Omega will 99% certain be sapphire though a very few have another type of watch crystal. The term 'crystal' is watch trade jargon for the glass. Though I am NOT in the watch trade my family has been for over 100 years. I also collect watches.
One kind poster here replied that the booklet he received inside his Gear box actually had written " glass-acrylic" That threw me for a complete loop as its either one or the other. I have asked my family and to their knowledge there is not a hybrid glass acrylic watch crystal?
The point that rather puzzles and disappoints me is when I asked Samsung in writing what the crystal was made of they replied that I had asked an "inappropriate question"? What on earth does that mean and why all the secrecy?
Another poster has said the crystal is made from Corning Gorilla glass 111, I requested his source for this information but to date no reply?
WE should be informed so we can take the level of care needed depending on the materials used. My other grave concern is the very low Ingress protection. This is first and foremost a wrist watch and needs to function to a certain degree of robustness and water protection OR the b++++y gear is as useful as boobies to a Nun!
Such potential yet so much of it seems incomplete?
Kind regards.
My Casio protrek and Suunto watch crystals are way more robust than these. And I have actually had zillions of mishaps with the protrek. Not a single scratch yet, nor in the Crystal nor the titanium band.

Speaker?Crystal screen?

First of all does the gear have a speaker
Secondly does it have the crystal screen. Many say no many say yes please answer
Also can I just leave the screen on without it going dim
Thanks

Speaker, yes. Sapphire crystal screen, I highly doubt it. Mine cracked while it was on charge...not even overnight.
I haven't tried to keep the screen always on...might look into it. The default setting turns the screen off after x minutes.

Hi,
IN the horology trade the 'crystal' is the trade name for what we. the consumer, refer to as the watch glass. That watch glass, is correctly called, the 'crystal' and can be made of several different materials depending on the quality of the watch. I have never known a 300.00€ watch with a sapphire crystal that is why I questioned this point originally.
I have yet to establish what the heck Samsung use on the gear. I first read it was indeed made from sapphire crystal. When I questioned this I was TOLD by several fellow posters that it was sapphire crystal. Now some inform me it is not?
I wrote an email to the Samsung forum site asking what the watch crystal was made of and the return reply was they didn't find my question suitable for an answer?????? Don't ask?
In terms of speaker, yes, it has and a very good one too.
Regards
Really??
How did it crack just by charging r u sure?

The manual that came with the watch says it's glass. It has a speaker but the volume can be a bit low in loud areas. The screen cannot be set to always on at least for now. Not sure why you would want to leave it on all the time anyway tho as it would just drain the battery for no good reason. The default look at your watch action turns it on at least 90%+ of the time, if it doesn't come on rotating your forearm slightly away from you and then back will generally wake it up.

Question Recommend a screen protector for Watch 5 Pro

Title says it all. This will be my first Smart Watch and and for my peace of mind need something sturdy that will withstand sweat during my workouts.
TIA
The Spigen air-armor ones tend to be good from what I’ve seen….
^^^ Thanks! Is everyone not using one since I didn't even see a thread created for screen protectors which I can only infer might mean most people don't think it's necessary to protect the screen...?
