Sooooo what are you doing while waiting for this phone? - Nexus 5 General

I mean besides checking Google and refreshing the threads on here 100X per day?
I guess my low point came a couple of weeks ago after the FCC leaked the measurements and I drew it up on paper, cut it out, just to see how the shape and size felt in my hand...Yea I was bored that day lol.

Trying to sell an iphone 5s to have enough money to get me and my wife an N5.

I like to get a physical representation of things though, always been a tactile learner.

well my trusty nexus 4 screen shattered. So its useless now. Back on my s2, ready to throw money at the screen

I'm moving the wife and I over to Straight Talk AT&T from Verizon with 2 x Nexus 4's until the day arrives. She'll keep one Nexus 4 and I'll grab the 5

Flashing roms on my N4...

zzzzzZZZZZ..... wake me up when they start selling it

For realz dog.
I think what hurt us die hard fans some was that the leaks came out early and it seems like we have already been waiting an eternity.

Release phone first then OS
I think the KitKat is delaying the release of the phone. The phone is definitely ready. They could release the phone first followed by OTAs. I wouldnt mind bugs

Being an Android enthusiast(or over enthusiast like others ) I'm expecting KitKat as much as Nexus 5. Without KitKat changes(hope there have some tricks up their sleeve) Nexus 5 is just like iPhone iteration.

Using an iPhone 5 and can't wait for the Nexus 5 to be released.

Praying for a 64gb version and flashing Roms on my HTC One. Will be selling it and grabbing an N5 if there happens to be a 64gb version. Not likely but one can hope.

I have a 5s as well and was thinking about selling but if the Nexus 5 is $300 with those leaked specs I may use the Nexus 5 as a mini tablet instead of getting a Nexus 7 2013. I also don't want to use custom roms on my daily driver anymore due to my crack flashing habit. Plus I do like the small size, FaceTime with the wife and speed of the iPhone.
And you got to figure that the Nexus 5 will hold its value very well compared to a Nexus 7. I know it's not a tablet but compared to a 4" inch iPhone it's pretty close. And if the Nexus 5 has a ir blaster I would be in heaven.

N4 vs All Other Phones Discussion
Hey all!
I have been meaning to write this thread for a few days now and finally found some time to do so. Basically the name describes it all. This thread is meant to discuss our Nexus 4 vs any and every up coming phone all in one place. The nexus forum is going to be a very popular place once the phone makes it way out to people over the next few months. The purpose of this thread is to try to keep some sort of cleanliness and avoid the dozens of "Is this phone better than the N4" threads every time a new devices is released. Please keep all those discussions confined to this thread. Please keep it civil and remember no flaming or trolling will be allowed. Just a reminder I am certain the Mods will be enforcing this policy in our forum. Thank you all for your cooperation it is greatly appreciated

I love my Nexus 4.....but the only thing i wonder about is why did LG think it is OK to put the headphone jack on the top? My old nexus s has it on the bottom and it makes much more sense there.
This is two different category of phones, but Nexus 4 VS Note 2. Which is better at what and why?
I guess I'll throw my opinion out there...
After owning the first iPhone, 3G, then 3GS I decided to give Android a try with the Nexus One. It was all downhill from there as I was completely sucked into Android. I then went through a few different android phones from the Nexus one > HTC Sensation > Galaxy SII > Galaxy Nexus > Galaxy SIII. I was happy with all of these phones. However, when the iPhone 5 came out I decided it was time to give IOS a try again. I lasted all of 2 weeks with that phone until i realized I really just cannot stand IOS (even as a mac user). But the one thing that made me hesitant in going back to Android was that the build quality of the iPhone 5 is excellent. It was better than any other phone I had ever owned.
When the Nexus 4 was announced and reviews were being posted on many blogs I decided to return the iPhone 5 and pull the Galaxy Nexus out of the nightstand to use until I could get my hands on the N4. People were saying it was the most solid and well built Android phone to date so I was getting excited for it. As of 3 days ago I finally have the N4 in my possession. At first I really liked it but didn't think it was THAT much better than the Galaxy Nexus. But after a few days of real use I have come to learn that this phone truly lives up to the hype. It really is the most well built Android phone I have ever used and it's the first Android phone that I really think can be compared to the iPhone in terms of build quality.
I'm already happier with this phone than I have been with any of my previous phones. It really is of superb quality and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Agree with everything you saud. This is truely the first time Android has had a "premium" feeling phone.
Coming from a nexus s, the nexus 4 is a huge jump. I have read several posts/topics about all the problems people have encountered with the nexus 4 but I have yet to run into any of them. There has not been any screen yellowing, no speaker noise, camera problems, no overheating problems, etc. The build quality is excellent as stated in the previous post. There is a little flex in the device if you try bending it but there isn't and shouldn't be any under normal use. The screen is nice and crisp. I don't see any issues with saturation as some people disliked before. The battery life on the nexus 4 is better than the nexus s, which was plenty enough already. However, there is one area that the nexus s outperforms the nexus 4: the sound quality. Don't get me wrong though, the sound on the nexus 4 isn't bad at all but it could be improved. It would be great if we could get supercurio to add the Qualcomm chip to the list of devices that voodoo sound supports (if we could set up a fund for supercurio to work on this it would be awesome ). Other notes: I really liked the size of the nexus s and I really didn't want to get a larger screen, but the nexus 4 fits great in my hand and I am very happy with the extra screen estate. Overall I am extremely happy with the device and I would highly recommend the upgrade for any nexus s users.

better with headphone jack on top when you're pluggin aux in car. and the whole theory of "headphone jack is better on bottom for keeping phone in jeans and listening to music" is a load of crap. there are many ways to reach for your pocket lol, and having the jack on the bottom doesn't make it more convenient
Nexus 4 vs Optimus G
Why do you think Optimus is scoring 7,000 compared to 4,000 of Nexus 4 in quadrant benchmark test? They both got the same HW!
Droid DNA vs Nexus 4
I put this in another thread when I was trying to decided between the N4 and DNA.
Nexus 4 Pros:
-Unlocked bootloader, huge dev community
-Most recent software + updates
-Power button on side
-More affordable phone ($349 16gb) and GSM carriers are more affordable
-No Contract
-Resells well
Nexus 4 Cons:
-Touch screen sensitivity (doesnt register light touches, pinching+scrolling delayed)
-Issues with 4.2
-No LTE (yet, has Band 4 which is coming to Tmo soon and likely the new Google/dish network)
-Nav bar can take away screen real estate on the homescreen and some apps
-Light buzzing sound in earphone
DNA Pros:
-Taller 1080p screen, thin bezel
-Capacitive buttons
-4g LTE
-Mifare Classic NFC chips work
-Minimal amounts of software and hardware bugs, 4.1 is more stable
DNA Cons:
-Likely not to have as many ROM options. No S-OFF yet
-2 year contract! Verizon.
-1080p can result in pixelation or small icons in some games/apps
-Phone is more expensive ($599) and Verizon is more expensive
-MicroUSB cover (not a huge deal with wireless charging)
-Power button on top isnt the easiest to press, bad position too
-4.1 and won't get updates as often
Shared Attributes:
-Can be rooted, bootloader can be unlocked
-LCD Screen
-16gb Internal/No microsd
-Wireless charging
-Battery life ~4.5hrs screen-on time
-Great build quality (matter of opinion here, both are excellent in their own way)
my 2cent is that why people trying to vs nexus 4 to other smartphones out there, with 300-350 to get unlocked phone, fastest updates, no contracts. They say you get what you paid for but to me Nexus 4 is an exception!. Galaxy S3? Note 2? Iphone 5? HTC DNA? best cameras?, best specs?, best battery life?, all those are nice phones! but look at how much you have to pay?.

That'll be because benchmarks don't really prove anything, just like a review doesn't mean anything if it's from someone you don't know.

So where is all the s4 attraction.

N4 was getting so much attraction but all fades within 6 months of release. It aged in just 2 months. Thats what samsung is good at making futurisitc devices.
I made a post that soon n4 users will feel cheated and now i guess is the time.
S4 and htc one has made it all look like an aging phone. People are happy because KLP will be supported on old hardware just because of this fact and hopefully masses will get KLP on their devices.

The nexus 4 is now out for ~5 months. wait another 4-6 months and the galaxy s4 and the HTC one will be old too and other devices will take their place.
get over it, technology is not stagnant.
grass is green and water is wet
The nexus 4 was already old when it left the factory gate. Just like the S4 is old right now. And by the looks of it, the performance of the s4 is not much better than our n4 anyways. Considering that it will probably cost more than double what we payed...i say we win!

Why did you decide to stay with the N4 after the N5 was released?

I actually bought the N5 before getting the N4. The fact is, I'm gonna get all of the Nexus devices (all new in box) just because I can. And I plan on using most of them.
But anyway, for those that aren't as Nexus obsessed as me, why did you stay with the N4? I know one answer I'm going to hear: "because it still does what I need". (fair enough)
Just interested in what people think.

Good response. Thanks for sharing.
Some of us are enthusiasts interested in other people's opinions and experiences.
I stayed with the N4 because I think it's more handy. It's a little smaller than the nexus 5 and since I have smaller hands I prefer the nexus 4. Also, the nexus 5's earpiece is weird (atleast for me)
I stayed because I didnt find mych difference and also Im in a condition that buying a new device will probably waste my time ! And also planing to move to google silver or iphone 6

That's different.
Hey, I totally understand why someone would stay with the N4. To be honest, I have relatively small phone needs. My Moto G actually did everything I needed and more. (I gave it to my mom) While we're at it, I bet the Galaxy Nexus would be more than enough for most people. But some people just like having the best. Not that I need it, I just like having it.
No doubt the Nexus 4 is still a strong player in the market. It will have no problem running 5.0
I just wish there was a CandyKat rom for the N4.
I know, a lot of people whom I've told about the earpiece think of it as a weird reason. I, however, just didn't like the design of the phone. But hey, that's just me. I love the moto g and x. They're both very handy phones and pretty solid performers too!
my reason :
- I got my N4 cheap (got $100 discount when I bought it).
- screen density is more than enough for my poor eyes. (tell you the truth I really can tell differences between 415ppi vs 318ppi).
- CPU sector, for me myself my nexus 4 is already fast enough. I mean this is a phone not a laptop/pc, I don't need huge clock speed or ram to play games.
only one two cent personal opinion.

It is a great phone, no questions there
Why did you decide to stay with the N4 after the N5 was released?
I guess because not everyone is as independently wealthy as you. Geez, I just bought the thing only a year and a half ago. Assuming that someone keeps making OS updates for this phone on this forum to keep up with security updates, I will keep it for around the same time-frame as I refresh my main desktop computer, about 5 to 7 years. Heck, my older second desktop computer is 11 years old and runs various versions of Linux as well as XP just fine (Although I disabled XP because it was finally discontinued.) I understand it is the constantly changing hardware that forces Google to very quickly stop supporting OS upgrades on older devices (really just an excuse to sell more devices), but it is really ridiculous that my Nexus 4 will shortly become obsolete by Google's standards, unlike Microsoft who supports their operating systems for a very reasonable amount of time.
I stayed with my Nexus 4 because Nexus 5 didn't offer a significant difference in performance. I was able to compare that side by side, and the performance of my Nexus 4 was just fast as Nexus 5. So i saw no point in change.
As i'm a non gamer guy, i think Nexus 5 will perform better games than Nexus 4, but i really don't play much.
Personally speaking, changing phone every year (some people always want to stay on fashion), seems to me like throwing money away, i think it's better change of 2 in 2 years, then you'll notice more technology improvement.
Another situation, was when i saw the Nexus 5...i was totally disappointed with his design..i mean look at the Nexus 4...it has an amazing design, glass on the back, all seems to be in harmony.
In Nexus 5 it's just a phone...don't know...lack of personality, i guess....lol
Now, i'll be waiting for Nexus 6...let's see if it worth...
Most of the replies posted in the thread apply to me as well. Some additional thoughts that kept me away from the n5:
It feels better in my hands and the size was perfect. The main things I liked were the corners of the nexus 4 were more curved than the 5, and that the tapered edges of the n4 screen felt natural.
I also preferred the n4's "discrete" camera compared to the gigantic wart that's on the back of the n5.
Sent from my Nexus 4
I stayed because I won't jump to another phone until I see significant improvement in technology as nowadays it's just spec bumps. I think the 4th is more than enough to last for another 2 years. I'll probably change next year with the coming of L and 64bit phones and only if it really matters. Oh, and I'm not rich enough to change phone every year ?

No CandyKat? It is there, right here.
My reason? Saving up my money for my masters degree studies.
I got the N4 on contract which isn't up until March next year.
Being a student I couldn't afford to buy it outright, and obviously couldn't afford to buy the N5 when it came out.
I will, however, be buying the Nexus 6 the moment it's released. I should have my student loan through by then.
Priorities, right?
I think the Nexus 4 is a gorgeous looking phone (I'm a sucker for the glitter back) and I like how the edges curve as well, it is a unique design. It's also one of the most comfortable device to grip. Lastly, the size of the screen and phone are very similar to the Moto X, which is the ideal size for me. I believe LG went with cheaper production cost with the N5. I originally sold my N4, but when Android L preview image was announced, I was dying to try it out, so I bought another N4. I'm not planning to sell it again (I hope), there is a charm about this device that I like.
I to am a nexus lover. I did buy a n5, I do use it as my daily phone for the most part. but I do occasionally use my n4 as my phone as well. actually, I use my n4 and n5 every day. my n4 I use daily as a WiFi device at work. and it is still a great device! but those that say that the n4 is on par with the n5 when it comes to speed, are just kidding themselves. sure, in the ui, its just as fast as my n5. heck, my gnex is as fast in the ui as my n5. but I'm not talking ui, as any phone(even my nexus s) can have a fast ui if you set it up right. I'm talking opening apps/process, and computing. the n5 blows my n4 away when it comes to apps opening, and the speed of actually computing. anyways, that doesn't take away from my n4, as I do love it as part of my family
I stayed because it wasn't that BIG of an upgrade from the N4 to be honest. Definitely getting the N6 whenever its announce/released.
I got the my Nexus 4 when Google put them on sale last year before the 5's release. I'm in the process of convincing the wife that I need (aka want) a Nexus 5.

Coming back to Nexus 5

What is it about the Nexus phone that wanting me to keep coming back...
I bought it when it first came out on the Google store. After a few months of using it, I traded for the LG G2. The G2 is nice and all but it is not as smooth as the Nexus for sure. So, I traded to Nexus 5 again.. After another month of using, I traded for the HTC M8. The M8 is nice build but with a case on, no one notice any different. I can not even deposit checks to my bank using the M8 camera. So now I thinking of coming back to the Nexus again..
Just wondering if anyone in the same situation like me..
Thanks..

i think you should ask yourself: Why the hell i keep buying every phone that comes out?
i've been though like 6 phones in the past year <.<
had the nexus 5 twice and just sold it again cause I managed to get a OnePlus one
I think we all love the nexus mainly because how easy it is to upgrade, customize and because its really the best deal.
I sold the note 3 to get n5 and n7 2013.
I can't complain at all.
Best thing about it is they are light way and easy to develop for
Nexus5 usually is the best on XDA for Development and Fun
I'm personally thinking of getting rid of my N5 and getting the M8..
I've thought about buying several phones since owning the N5 since launch day. I like gadgets. But I've saved myself the grief and just held on to the N5 as I've played with all the 'latest greatest' flagships (sans the 1+1) and still to this day there is not a smoother snappier Android device than the mighty N5. This phone has spoiled me bad with its stutter-free blazing fast operation. It's going to take one hell of a device to get me to upgrade
I decided to get m8, couldn't be happier. Although the Nexus 5 was and is a nice phone I find the battery to be mediocre. If it wasn't for the battery I doubt I would have picked up the m8

Umm, I just ordered the 1+1, I have N5 currently. What didn't you like about 1+1? I am probably going with 4.4 on it instead of CM.

Mainly just its size. It was too big for practical use for me. I had a hard time making the decision to sell it, there is no question that it's an amazing phone, it just wasn't for me. If you have no problem with a phone that large, then you will absolutely love it. It is a seriously bad ass piece of hardware.

Tried the GN2? My Note 2 is my backup, love it but N5 is way easier 1handed. May just sell my Note, Note 2 and N4 and keep N5 and 1+1.

Yeah, the Note 2 is too big for me too. I guess I'm just not a phablet guy. The N5 fits my large screen needs perfectly. I also have a Moto X which I absolutely love, and an iPhone 5s which will get upgraded to the 6 when it comes out. I think 4.7" is the absolute perfect screen size, so I can't wait for the iPhone 6. Gaming on that thing is gonna be amazing.
leaving BIG RED to either Tmob prepaid or ATT GO PHONE.. Im kind of in a smaller town but all have stores here so I am assuming they are ok.. I bought a N5 on swappa.com. I am a little nervous to leave vzw been with them over 12 years but I am tired of the locked down phones and games they play.

Bad idea lol. I just came from an M8 its good but the 1 flaw which is the camera is such a huge let down. The M8 would be the greatest phone Android has ever been on if only HTC would quit ignoring us and put better cameras in their phones. HTC is like Nintendo, kept ignoring the community/tech industry suggestions for hardware for years now they're in last place. They have been for 2 console generations now. On topic lol, if HTC had the camera sensor from a GS5, hell even a GS4 it would be perfect.

Is the camera really that bad? I'm thinking of doing the same and getting the M8. I did see some HDR shots which didn't look as bad as people made the camera out to be. Even on the Nexus I keep HDR on to get better shots. Is the front facing camera better on the nexus also?

Why do you want a nexus 6?

What is your reason for wanting a nexus 6? My reason is I want a device that delivers the full experience. I dont want to carry around more devices than i need to. I believe the nexus 6 can be my everything device for mobile. I wanted this after using a oneplus one for a little while. I really liked the big 5.5 inch screen and started to use my iPad less and less after getting it. All i keep thinking was if this was a little bigger and the resolution was a little bigger to match, it would be perfect. Well here came the nexus 6 with a 5.96 inch 1440p screen. I have a nexus 4 and have been loving it except the battery and the camera. So far from the hands on people are saying the camera and battery are better. Also the reception should be better than the oneplus on At&t. The nexus 6 looks big i hear it feels good in your hand and it is a beast with performance. After hearing this I immediately sold my iPad and my oneplus one. I am ready to carry around one device for all my mobile needs. I have big hands so i welcome the size.
What about you?
Android L which in turn means fast updates
Premium Nexus device (internal specs, big screen, front facing speakers, build quality, etc)
I need a good smartphone (currently using a temporary budget phone)
I think it's (one of) the best phones available
I want one for the Chip, native lollypop, size and cause I love my Nexus 5 experience so much that I run GPE on my HTC ONE M8 at&t model .oh and cause I just have to have multiple devices to keep me busy
AT&T HTC ONE M8
My last 11 phones have been Samsungs. I'm looking forward to zero lag.
My Nexus 4 has been showing its age lately in the battery department. I would be lucky to get 3 Hours SOT with the crazy battery. Plus if I reboot the phone in the middle of use my battery goes from 90% to 70% which drives me crazy.
While I know the N6 will not be the end all solution to my Battery life issues, I believe its no better time to upgrade since I skipped over the N5 in favor of this. Plus I am not wholly confident that the Next Generation Nexus devices will be viable for me if they end up becoming the first generation consumer ARA hardware. Something I would preferably like to avoid a year with until they can hammer out issues and wait out until the second generation hardware releases (2016-2017 release).
If* I can get my hands on a nexus 6 then I want one because of how easy nexus devices are to root, unlock and modify. and also because the device looks beautiful and has the specs to drool over. And of course pure stock android.
I too am currently using a budget phone(Optimus F6 anyone? haha) and can't wait for an upgrade.
I'm so tired of being on the outside looking in to the N5 community. Great ROM options, first available updates, and great Devs. Plus who know when we will see another Nexus device compatible with crappy VZW.
I bought the Galaxy Note 2 at launch, then upgraded to the Note 3 at launch. I loved both devices because I go crazy for hardware specs. I've never used a Nexus device before, but on both of my Notes, I realized that I mostly use AOSP custom roms... maybe about 90% of the times (I usually switch up custom roms every month), there's maybe one of two TouchWiz roms that I liked, but all the other ones were always always AOSP (or AOKP, close enough). Now that Google has decided to join the spec race, I for one am VERY VERY happy that the Nexus 6 is so expansive. You Get What You Pay For!!
The Nexus 6 won me over the Note 4, the specs are so incredibly similar it's ridiculous!
So yeah, Nexus 6, I wantz for all the amazing custom roms that will be available on this type of device with such incredible power hosted inside! Can't wait!
Tomorrow is another Play Store restocking days!! spam spam spam spam! lol

I went iPhone s2, s3, nexus 4, oneplus, and now my 6 is preordered. I can't wait to get my hands on it. There are so many different rooms that always come out for the nexus devices. Now with the hardware the 6 has I can't wait for some amazing new roms to come out.

Good luck this Wednesday. I got my preorder last week.
Its the motorola nexus that we all thought would never happen. like Rossi going to ducati. I lust hope the phone works better then the ducati. Oh and there is the fact that my g3 is a lag beast. I pick up my wifes g2 and remember what a phone should run like sadly .
Screen size, fast charging, front facing speakers, lollipop and the fact that I have Jump and wouldn't get my monies worth if I don't use it.
Paranoid Android, the end.
Because Nexus, that's why
Cuz I can.
My reason is simple: screen size! Otherwise, I would keep the Z3
Official support and the dev community. And my Note 2 is dying.
I want one because I can't buy one...

sadly I am at work during the time they add stock(between 10 and 10:30) so i doubt i will get one tomorrow either.
After switching to the N5 from the iPhone 4, I liked the screen and eventually I realised I used it more than the tablet that I had and because of that a bigger phone would be the perfect one device for everything.
