I've just flashed Phoenix 5.2 on my phone, but for some reason if my phone is in silent mode I get absolutely no vibration when I get a SMS message. I've checked the sound settings and the settings within the messages app itself but for the life of me I can't find where to turn vibrations on! If anyone could help me, that'd be fantastic!
Thank you!

If it's on silent mode, it is set so that no vibration notifications come in. You need to put your phone in vibration mode
Is there a vibration mode at all? I'm using the silent mode that you can get to by using either:
1. Sideloader
2. Top menu
3. Lock screens
When I used to be on Cognition, the silent mode automagically put everything in vibrate mode (to my memory)... Or I must've changed a setting somewhere to make it vibrate instead of making no sound/vibrations whatsoever.
Menu>Settings>sound>vibration > ALWAYS or ONLY IN Silent or ONLY not silent
if that just isnt doin it for you try the app "SMS pop up" it will take over the notifacations at the top and you can control the vibration how you want, with reminders if you dont answer right away and pop up windows with the txt, with privacy mode if lock screen is on, custom ring tones for custom people ect...
if you use sms pop up disable the regular sms notifacation.
SMS app> menu button>settings> notifacation

Thanks for that! I've also found out what the problem was! I've had "ALWAYS" on all the time!
The silent mode in Sideloader and Top menu makes it vibrate, but the Lock Screen's "Silent Mode" makes the whole phone just go mute.
I've had the Lock Screen set to the new 'Rotary Lock' that's available in Phoenix 5.2... and it seems to be only that Lock Screen's Silent Mode that causes this problem.
Silent Mode with the normal Android Lock Screen works fine (with vibrations and etc)
I come from an iPhone with the hardware silent switch. If this was set, then the only sound would be vibrate. All other sounds (games, music, etc) would only be available through the headphones.
On my Galaxy Note, if I turn on silent mode, it seems to only affect the phone. For example, navigation, Skype notifications, etc, are all still heard. Is there a way to suppress all sounds in silent mode?
Rofl that is the media volume just hit your volume rocker all the wway down !

I realize that... but shouldn't silent mode still mute the media volume too? I assumed it muted the master volume, not just phone rings. I was in a job interview and had to turn the phone off because I was getting Skype messages
Is there an app/mod that can override the silent and make the phone truly silent without having to mess with the volume slider?

Ohh well if you go onto settings and click sound you can adjust volumes of media/alarm the way you want it its a slider thingy so if you want true silent just drag down all the sliders takes about 2 second to accomplish

shahkam,
I understand that but ALL others phones I've used with a silent switch, silence EVERYTHING. Going into volume and sliding the slider is extra effort than flipping a switch. Makes no sense that "silent" really does not silence the device. When you mute the volume on your Mac/PC, it does not selectively mute certain applications (system sounds, music volume, mic volume, etc). It mutes everything.
I'm sure I am not the only one who finds this strange. Is this an Android issue or specific to the Note?

Yes, there are profile apps that can be downloaded (mine is a paid app, easyprofiles) that can set all volumes e.g. ringtones & media volume, with a single click.

It sounds like skype is using the media audio channel for notification sounds, which should be going through the... notification channel! Sounds like a skype issue (the skype app is really bad)

It's not just Skype. As shahkam pointed out, even if you put the phone on silent, any apps using media volume are still audible. Defeats the purpose of silencing the phone, IMO. If I set the phone to silent, I expect NO audio (only vibrations).
Anyway, seems like I am beating a dead horse here and will have to use a 3rd party app for "one-click mute" instead of mucking around with volume sliders. Thanks for the suggestions.
P.S. yes, the Skype app is pretty bad but it was much worse on the iPhone.
The third party app "tasker" can provide a no click solution among other things. It can automate most anything, including completely silencing your phone when you have a meeting on your calendar. Send texts automatically to people when you are driving, etc.
If you are planning to stay on Android for a while, this powerful app is well worth its price.

I've probably been watching too much sci-fi but this sounds quite scary to me

which rom are you using? i put the phone into silent mode using the drop down toggle so it is on vibrate, i dont get any notification sounds for sms/email etc that i would if it wasnt on silent mode
i dont use skype so i cant say about that but it sounds like certain app are using their own sound system which is overriding the system default
Buddy the silence thingy on iPhone is the only good thing about an iphone it isn't so hard to silence it completely + if you use silent mode alot just go to message aand disable notification same for every other apps such as Skype i understand your frustration but i honestly think its not a big issue :/

Solution: AudioMuter
I was also annoyed by this "feature"... So I've written an app that can mute all audio outputs of your phone.
It's called AudioMuter and is available in the Playstore:
HTML:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=MyApps.AudioMuter&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsIk15QXBwcy5BdWRpb011dGVyIl0.
Hope this helps!
Silent thing in iphone is not the best. It sucks dude. The toggle or button of the iphone usually breaks.

You could get a 3.5mm jack and plug it into the headphone socket when you want silence.

Not necessarily, I still get SMS notification sounds on my handset when i have headphones in.
I use Slider Widget - Volumes in the Play Store; fantastic app, puts a widget with up to 6 toggles on it. I turned double touch toggle on in settings so I can just double tap the icon to toggle sound on and off. When i want silence I toggle off all but the alarm and in-call voice volume and with it on my home screen I can tell at a glance what sound is on/off.
For finer control, you click a toggle and it pops up a slider bar to adjust the volume.
I have to say, I agree with the person above...the fault lies more with Skype on your particular problem for apparently using the wrong volume setting for its notifications; it might not be entirely intuitive that silent mode leaves media volume on, but media volume SHOULD only apply to sounds you deliberately generate (ie, you start playing music or a game). Things like notifications/ringtones/etc go off at unexcpected times outside of your control, so those are the ones you want to silence... you can't hit play on your music app and then get angry at your phone for playing music lol.
this may be a stupid question, but how do I play a ringtone to test it out?
I went to change the ringtone in the sounds settings and I can only select a new ringtone.
On other phones when you select a new ringtone it will play it so you know what you are selecting, or at least give you a play button, but here I don't see any such option.
What Rom are you using? It should let you select one and play it then if you want it choose apply on the bottom of the screen

the answer is much dumber than that
the ringtone is getting played but I didn't hear it because the "media volume" was low
when you're in the ringtone selector, and you press the "volume up" button, it changes "ringtone volume", but this does not make the ringtone play louder in the ringtone selection setting.
to change "media volume" you must go into some media application, press volume up, and then go back to the ringtone selection and change ringtones again.
I guess it's not exactly the most intuitive or user friendly part of the phone...
guys
Llama on my nexus 6 doesn't work and silent mode just doesn't keep the phone silent. Any other app that does this or has anybody used a blocking mode app that works for them? Root call blocker changes the whole interface of the dialing application and I don't like that part
Thx

Lollipop has no proper silent mode. If you don't want notification, just press volume rocker and choose "none" or if you want notification from any selected app, choose "priority". Proper silent mode will be added on 5.1
There is an xposed module that allows true silent mode (Allows alarms, unlike "none")
The app "Power Toggles" has a "Sound Toggle" widget you can set up to get the old silent mode back. You will still see the star icon in the status bar but the phone behaves the same as the old silent mode. Basically the toggle toggles between "None", "Old Silent Mode", "Priority" and "All".
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.painless.pc&hl=en
I just set up a 1x1 Sound Toggle and stick it on my main home screen.
I also use this app to force the phone into immersive mode using a toggle for games that don't hide the nav buttons.(You lose keyboard support with it on though)
By default these were set to off, and now I seem to have to go through app by app to check they can all show. Does this sound right? Is there a way to just turn them all on?
