Is anyone else getting a terribly robotic voice from the Maps turn by turn gps? Normally it's the nice smooth voice from Google Now, but since I've been using it on my Note 3 it sounds terrible. Any ideas?

Is this Google Maps navigation, or some other maps app?
The Note 2's settings let you choose between text-to-speech by Google or by Samsung. Does the Note 3 have those options too? Which option are you using?

That's exactly what it was. There is only an option for Samsung and to get the high quality voice you have to download it. I didn't even think of that. Thanks!

Wouldn't it be easier to explain then? I saw that mention of downloading one I would love to know what that is. I searched googleplay and didn't seem to find what I was looking for.
As Gary02468 mentioned, you have to go to the TTS settings in Language and Input. Then click on the settings on the Samsung TTS Engine and then download voice data. I guess in my mind what needed to be done was obvious.

Maybe it is an issue with my phone I go in the to the Samsung text-to-speech engine, go to install data, choose English High Quality, hit play sound exactly like what I want, hit download and nothing happens. It never changes to the high quality voice.

I don't think this is actually solved, at least not what op was asking for. OP was wanting the original Google TTS that is excluded from the phone's firmware for some reason. The fix that you see above was addressing someone else's issue not being able to download the high quality version of samsung's tts engine.
Yea I hope theres a way to add google's tts in the near future as well.

I am the OP and what I really wanted was to get rid of the terrible, robotic sounding voice. The Samsung HD voice works great for me so I changed the title to "SOLVED". If you guys want to make another thread on how to download the Google TTS that's cool, but as far as my issue is concerned, it's fixed.

This doesn't surprise me, since the issue with Google Voice was the same issue as the Facebook Widget and that works too.

you can also get apps directly on your xoom by downloading from amazon app store. there's a ton of apps that work fine but missing from the market. and you don't have to go through putting the app on your phone then moving to your xoom, and you will get updates.

Does anyone know what I can turn off on maps location settings so that Google Now will still tell me where I am and bring up the same cards (i.e. The weather in the address I'm in, how long it will take to get back home, places to check in, etc.)?

Pretty much, yes. Also if you turn off everything under Location, you will not have to worry about that much anymore. There are ways to completely freeze or remove Google Now from your device, just use Google and you'll find many articles regarding this.

Supposedly, should go to settings - controls - language and input - text-to-speech (TTS) options - Samsung TTS engine and press configure cog. Yup, same here. I want the Google voice, not the HD samsung voice.
I have this problem on my Huawei P6, and from doing reseach I believe it's the TTS. If you look at under language and input, there is no Google-Text-To-Speach engine, but instead just the Samsung one.
I still couldn't find a way to download (or where to download the app for that matter) the Google TTS engine.
I hope some can figure this out, because that Samsung voice is really annoying. The funny thing is, Google Now have the correct voice/sound.

I took a peek on the link provided as far as a work around for this issue/annoyance, and seems like a lot of work.
Anyway, I've found an easier solution. You have to be rooted and have Titanium backup. Not sure if it will for everyone, but it sure works on my phone.
All I did was freeze the Samsung TTS engine, and like a miracle my Google maps now sounds wonderful (it use the Google voice/speech) now.
Let me know if this works for you guys.

NOTE 4
On my phone, it was caused by activating Greenify in the accessibility settings. When I did that, I got a popup telling me that my default language didn't match TTS. It offered me options of canceling, going to settings, or enabling TalkBack. So, for some reason, activating Greenify activates TalkBack. Voila. Talking calculator.
