this guy said that in order for him to get spb shell 3D to work on his milestone he had to use this bulletproof script. he said that would keep it from closing out like it does on our hero's. so they have the same problem as us... as far as trying to get spb to work. here is the bulletproof script thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276 . now i was wondering if anybody can take a look at it and see if they can get it to work on our hero's? everytime i look at this thread i get so confused lol. thanks!
I used that link for my HeroC once upon a time. Just read everything carefully, the OP has everything laid out so that you can understand it. And using google or XDA search to find out what you do not know is always the best option before posting a thread about a problem. I know this for myself, especially with that mod, because I used it before. Plus searching and solving a problem personally always provides to be a great learning experience.

If you can't find something you're confused about on Google AND/OR XDA Search then please post in the thread and I'll try my best to explain things for you. But I'm sure that if I can do it using XDA Search & Google, so can you. Self help is in your best interest, but my help is in your best interest as well. I'll be watching this thread and help in any way I can.

is there anyway to tell if my newly upgraded v6 supercharger script is the reason for my recent FC's and reboots when using the Google navigation.apk ? Everything was running smoothly for a few days, and i have not installed or removed any apps since then. What should i do?
Running OS: 2.3.4
Mod Version: aospCMod-HEROC
Build: GRJ22
I don't know what that script does but a nandroid restore always works or reflash your rom over itself and clear caches. You'd really be better off posting in a more appropriate thread, like the one the dev of the script made. It may be easier to disable than i know.

did just that and worked like a charm. V6 supercharger has made my phone faster than ever before and no more FC's (for the moment)

...first off, wrong section. This should be in Q&A.
Second off following any of the below advice is at your own risk (mainly because this is 100% from memory and I can remember things wrong sometimes ). Before you trust what I tell you I recommend reading the Q&A section, as I assure you you're not the first person to ask how to root the first android phone to be offered by Americas largest carrier.
The OG Droid doesn't require anything to unlock the boot loader, its not locked.
Since its on such an outdated version of android pretty much any generic one click root tool should work to get root. Try super one click or the like. From there you should be able to use rom manager to flash a current recovery. Then just put one of the fine roms from these here development forums on the SD card and have fun.

Do a search on here, there have been plenty of threads, also check out droid forums, they have stuff too. That's how I learned a lot just reading. Once you've rooted its easy. A good app to check out since you're rooted is rom manager, set cpu, titanium backup, wireless tether, file manager. Always make a nandroid backup before flashing a rom or kernel( provides overclock)

you can download rsd lite and flash the clockworkmod recovery spf. It won't root your phone, but it will give you a recovery(which is better). Now just install your custom rom. I recommend cyanogenmod 7 or steel droid for stability and speed, their also pre-rooted, maybe find a Overclocked kernel if you want INSANE speeds...

With the newly released ICS update for the GT-P6810, some users will inevitably update their devices and somehow lose root in the process. For those unlucky users, downgrading to HC for root and then re-upgrading with MobileODIN is no longer the only option. There are some options for obtaining root via stock recovery instead of ODIN, but I saw that a few people were having issues. Probably not a problem with the method, but variety never hurts. So here is a VERY direct method of rooting your GT-P6810 on ICS. Please feel free to simplify or improve upon this method and post it here. Progress helps everyone.
WARNING!!: The following steps MAY trigger the counter on your device. However, they didn't trigger mine.
Prerequisites: ODIN or Heimdall
Notice: Some basic flashing experience is required for this. Review the steps FIRST!
DISCLAIMER: The only guarantee I make is that this worked for me. You run the risk of tripping your device's counter, corrupting your device, or bricking your device. If you don't know what you're doing, this is not for you. I accept no responsibility for ANYTHING that might arise as a result of following this guide!
1.) Download the following files:
a) CWM for P6810: http://db.tt/B6mTm9fd CREDIT: locerra
b) root for P6810: http://db.tt/kcuvYG5k CREDIT: mashkuov
2.) Put your device in "Download Mode" and connect to your PC.
3.) Open ODIN and verify that it sees your device.
4.) In ODIN, click "PDA" and select the CWM *.tar you downloaded.
5.) Make sure that you haven't selected to format/partition your device and flash the *.tar.
6.) Upon completion, your device should reboot. Copy the root.zip to your device, and then reboot into recovery.
7.) In recovery, flash the root.zip and reboot.
8.) You should now have root in ICS!

Okay fellas. Just a quick survey. How many of you were able to successfully execute the steps in this guide without difficulty? If problems were encountered, what were they? Did anyone trip their flash counter by using this guide? Did anyone soft or hard brick by using this guide? I'd really like some feedback.
On a second, but similar note, how easily were you able to follow the guide? What do you think I should add to it or remove from it? Should I make it into a full, click-by-click, newb-friendly guide? Should I trim the fat and simplify it? Or should I leave it as-is? I'm flying blind here. I've written small, simple, easy to follow guides for stuff like "build.prop" edits in the past; but I've never written a guide for something that involved ANY kind of flashing. So any critique would be very welcome. I've always felt that the biggest of XDA's strengths was its community's standard practice of openly sharing. So now that I've shared my guide, I would like to, in GPL fashion, open it up to corrections, additions, modifications, and improvements. So if you've got anything, anything at all, please go ahead and post it.
I thank you all for your time and hope this guide has been a help.
Thank you,
Edward (Mister_Mxyzptlk)

I didn't have root before,
So this method is the best at the moment for anyone running stock ics

Another option is just to flash ICS using MobileOdin with the EverRoot option. You may even unselect the "recovery" partition when doing so, and you will keep both root and CWM. Of course, this doesn't help if you've already flashed with Odin, but for those who haven't upgraded yet, I believe this is the best option.
YMMV, I'm not responsible if your device melts down and conjures a demon, etc etc etc.

This guide is for people who are ALREADY on unrooted ICS. How is your suggestion in any way helpful to those people? Unchecking recovery is only helpful if you use CWM. If you use stock recovery, you'll still have stock recovery. Also, MobileODIN doesn't always preserve root. If preserving root fails during the update, there's nothing MobileODIN can do. You'll have to re-root yourself. I've seen this happen first hand. Usually, you have to downgrade, re-root, and then use MobileODIN to upgrade again. This guide eliminates the need for that. If you upgraded and lost root, FOR WHATEVER REASON, this will get it back quickly, and easily.

Not everybody is already on unrooted ICS. I know I searched for ways to root the tablet even before I bought it; it's very conceivable that people who are thinking about upgrading to ICS will search for this. If they have root on HC, there is no need to lose it and reinstall. I just pointed this out (and MobileOdin is really one of the best Android tools out there, among with Tasker and TB).
About this corruption, I've personally never seen it happen, and I've flashed more ROMs on my S2 using it than it's healthy. Even if it happens, what do you lose by trying the easy route first (and, if needed, reflashing root through recovery)?
Sorry if I offended you in any way. All I wanted was to help.

You didn't offend me. This is a simple guide for achieving root on the 4.0.4 build for the 6810. This is XDA. If someone searches for a way to update a Samsung device, they're going to find MobileODIN. If XDA were a department store, I could spit in any direction and hit a MobileODIN thread. Don't overcomplicate things. If you're on unrooted ICS, this is as easy as it gets. Furthermore, everroot is a paid option. My method is free. There's no need to go buy an app for an option that simply isn't needed in this case. If you want to write a MobileODIN update guide, go ahead and do it. This is a development thread for a very specific scenario; not a thread to compare preferred update methods. Take care.

**Edit**
Since my issue is relating to not being able to get into Recovery mode at all, i'm going to move it to a separate thread.
P.S. your instructions were very clear and made perfect sense (having previously rooted a SGS i9000), however linking to Odin in step 2) and specifying how to get into recovery in step 6) might be useful for newer users?
Mine didn't work....I used mobile Odin pro to flash ICS ...I used ever root option while flashing to ICS but for some reason root didn't work ...
I have only tried to root without CWM so it threw me signature error...I have lost my USB cable so I cudnt flash CWM by Odin using PC

I will go into more detail I guess. I want to backup how they gave it to me and run it custom, be it remove apps or a new rom. I am worried about some kind of privacy issues. With my HTC Evo 4g I could backup the original rom completely and then uninstall programs or install a new rom.

So should I just follow the guide in this and if I have to run a custom rom use the on in this thread. Do I have to use the twrp and nandroid backup to make a backup? Or can I restore the stock rom buy using Method 2 after I follow the Method 1 in the root guide?

Thanks for your help man. I want you to know you are not just helping me.
Hey everyone, I'm new to the Nexus 7 forum. Coming from my LG Optimus L9 which is my daily phone. We have a very long winded rooting and bootloader unlock method for the L9 so it will be a relief to come to a straight forward Google device.
This may have been already asked but which method of rooting is best for my nexus 7 32gb WiFi. I took a look at the ROM toolbox kit, is that the best way of rooting? Also, which custom ROM / kernel combo should I go for after rooting + CWM? I'm looking for a stable ROM with a good battery life. I use this device mainly for web browsing and video streaming. Maybe some light gaming now and then. But my main need is longevity from the battery.
Thanks for taking the time to read and I look forward to joining this nexus community!

If you are not sure what to do exactly I would download one of the toolkits in the dev forums, they are the easiest way to do anything, simple 1 click actions for rooting as well as installing custom recovery, also as a personal preference id go with TWRP instead of CWM but thats just me. And in terms of a ROM/ kenrel thats all down to personal choice, try some out and see what you like but if you want a guarantee of some sorts just go with CM 10.1 in the Original Dev forum, go with the latest RC release.
I would agree with one of the Nexus toolkits. Though I've rooted other phones and tablets before I used Wugfresh's to unlock and root my Nexus 7. It was works like a charm.

Wug's toolkit is all you will need. Donate to the man, too. He deserves it, and his toolkit has saved my N7 more times than I care to remember.
Wugfresh Toolkit all the way.
And since its Google Device you will be rooted in matter of few minutes. =)
And don't forget to backup your data.
For ROM and kernel combo I use vanir ROM (tru speed or prime) and I've been using m-kernel but recently moved to the latest experimental builds of Franco kernel.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using a toolkit for your first go around. At least that way, you can make a backup in case something goes wrong, and then if you ever take an OTA or such by mistake you will be more familiar with adb (if you're doing anything in recovery) and fastboot. With Nexus devices though, "learn by doing" really isn't as bad as it is for others...
