Odd problem, and it seems to be somewhat common with no real "fix".
Bought my HTC One back in May and it has been flawless in every regard until recently. It no longer....charges. Clearly a defect with the phone, I'm just not sure if it is hardware or software related.
I plug the USB charger in (tried three different chargers) and nothing seems to work UNLESS the phone is completely powered off - then it will charge very, very slowly. My computer doesn't recognize a device when plugged into the USB port.
I'm a little dissatisfied with HTC at the moment. They issued an RMA but I have to do without a phone for over a week and they made absolutely no effort to speed up the process. Who knows how long the repair will take! They may make a better product than Apple/Samsung but their customer service is lightyears behind, sadly.
Is there any way to avoid this downtime? Any possible fixes?
I've tried...
1) Booting into safe-mode
2) Factory reset
3) 3 different chargers
Running Android 4.3 on Sprint.
I am encountering the same problem.
My phone will charge if I restart it and plug it into a wall-charger.
If I plug the phone into a PC, it fails to mount as a USB drive AND it fails to charge. After which it will no longer charge from a wall socket unless it has been rebooted.
I have tried a number of different cables, wall chargers, and computers.
I have tried resetting the phone to factory settings.
I have tried alternative ROMs in the hopes it would restore my USB functionality.
No luck.
Is it a hardware problem which requires servicing or is there a software fix to get the HTC One to show up as a USB drive again?

You might want to try to run HTC's Function Test which includes a battery and charger test - You may do so by dialing *#*#3424#*#* then selecting the Charger Test, followed by more then selecting the Battery test and finally run.

This is a cool trick! Thanks!
Charger came back as fine when charging from wall... but nothing when charging from PCs.
Also, their Charger test is really terrible. It basically says, "Plug in the charger. If the battery indicator says it is charging... then it is charging."
Yeah. I figured that much out on my own.
Looks like I need to hit the service center this weekend.
A question about service... This is my first Android phone. I've rooted it. Will this be a problem with the folks at the service center?

What does "RMA" mean?
Same issue. Tmo replaced it for $20
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah happened to me as well. The headphone jack also stopped working, but I got it swapped for a new one because of my warranty.

This just happened to me, and after some searching here and elsewhere I found that it seems to be an unsettlingly common issue. What was worse is the only solutions anyone had was RMA/replacement. Well, I called HTC customer service and the woman I spoke to was very helpful
She told me that the charging mode may need to be reset and gave the following instructions.
1. Turn phone OFF
2. Let charge for AT LEAST 10mins even if it doesn't look like it's charging (mine DID show the new charging animation)
3. Press and hold POWER + VOL UP + VOL DOWN for AT LEAST 2mins. Anything less will not reset the charge mode.
4. After 2mins release the buttons and the phone should boot as normal.
My phone is now charging normally.

AT&T HTC One that was not charging here, verifying this fixed my problem. As I held down the buttons for 2 minutes the phone attempted to boot itself multiple times, for others trying this method: This is normal, just wait the full two minutes.
Hey guys I have started having this same problem and I think it may be due to the charger port having dirt / grease in it. Iplugmy cable in and no charge. Push the cable down towards back of phone and charges again. I am going to give it a clean later and see

Appears to have worked for me. Two days ago I realized my phone was not charging unless i turned it off and charged with my adapter. I could connect to my PC and sync just fine but the charging wouldn't work. This reset procedure appears to have done the trick. Many Thanks:good:

What the heck is going on?
I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with the ROM, because it did this with the factory ROM, Manila 2d and now WM6.5.
I turned the phone off, unplugged it, removed the battery. I put the battery back in, replace the cover and press the power button. Nothing happens. I plug the phone back in to the wall charger and put power, it turns on....for about 3 seconds then reboots and it would seem that it will do this for as long as I let it go. If I unplug the phone while this is going on, it will die.
The last time this happened, it took it about a day and a half to sort itself out. It almost seems like its a battery issue.
Any thoughts or ideas?
UPDATE!
I took the sim card out of the phone for a few seconds and the phone seems to be working now.... But its been up and running for about 20 minute now with no sings of acting up.

tried to charge the pda all night the light stayed orange and never turned green indicating full charge. tried hard reset and when it goes in to prepare rom it shuts off like dead battery. when i plug in the pda to charge battery and then turn on the phone it freezes on splash screen. if i turn on phone then plug in to charge it acts like i havn't pluged in charger. is it the pda or battery?
I am not 100% sure on this, but to me it sounds like the battery.. and that is a MUICH cheaper option to test out... unfortunatly you ahveto wait for shippng typicalyl unless you have a friend who has the same phone.. I got 2 backups and a stand alone charger now... The other option could be your USB port... I have not heard this specific problem with them.... but I am a PC tech and have seen very simmilar problems with laptops... Usually the first think to for is the power port... Just like out phone, if the device is not on a flat surface and such when it is plugging it, it tweaks the port and it eventualyl breaks... on laptops it is not uncommon that when plugged in, the LEF wil light up saying it is getting power to charge, but it enver charges the battery, and even sometimes can;t power up the full system.. .It sort of sounds like this is what you phone is doing as well.. .If that is the problem the stand alone charger would work (my son broke off his usb all together and now syncs via bluetooth and jsut changes batteries.. he has 3 himself as well) If you search online, you can usualyl find a kti with a battery or 2 and a charger/dockign station for under $20US total. Good luck!

tried bootloader and installed official att rom and never shut off. when it was finished with install same issues appeared. help
For anyone facing this issue I would not recommend wasting money on a new battery as this issue has been around with few users since the Kaiser "Tilt" first came out and I've never seen ANY reports that a new battery fixes this. People have bought new batteries, fully charged their battery from a docking station, tried their friends fully charged battery all with the same result. I had this power down issue a Looong time ago my first week in with the Kaiser and managed a fix and am using the same battery now. Although it seems the battery is not being fully charged it's important to leave it charging until you'd assume it's fully charged and get into bootloader mode and flash an official htc Tytn 2 rom. It should flash completely, and the fact that it does not die immediately as on normal boot indicates it is not the battery but the rom. It did take me the whole afternoon of Flashing, recharging and repeating before it finally kicked in. Also, from reading older posts, it seems most if not all users like myself fixed this by flashing the older official htc wm 6.0; worth a shot at least.

Yup, that is what I had to today (I hard reset, actually), with barely enough battery life to do this.
Then the bloody unit came up and was charging - amazing, really!
(Was using the official HTC 6.1 upgraded WindowsMobile OS)
here is my 2 cents....
I owned five Tilts, replaced four of them with warranty issues ... so i have faced this dilemma on at least two of them.
First see if the USB tongue is loose. To do this try to gently tap it with the stylus. If the tongue inside the USB port is loose then you will be facing rebooting and other issues and troubles in the future. The USB tongue gets used and jerked every time you connect your device to your PC or wired headset. If you are still under warranty and the USB connector tongue is loose I recommend returning the phone ( if you still can) and getting a replacement. There is no easy fix for a loose USB connection tongue as i have taken one apart and it is very difficult to repair or replace and very easy to mess it up further.
So, my advice to all Kaiser owners... be careful when plugging and unplugging your phones through the USB. Do it gently as the connectors are very fragile.
For those that have the above issues, I recommend using a separate battery charger tray, avoid plugging the USB as much as you can, and if you must, then administer extra care. The rebooting will stop if you plug the USB cable to the device and move it up and down a hair then holding steady. And most likely you will not get a full charge or even a partial charge. The biggest culprit to this problem is car chargers, and second, is inserting the stylus by mistake (when it is dark and hard to see) in the USB port instead of the Reset hole by accident.
I plugged in the wall charger last night before I sleep, and the phone is completely dead this morning. I've tried different battery and different charger, but I just can't turn on my device at all, the charging led doesn't even light up.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
ROM: Cyanogenmod CM6 Alpha 1
Kernel: IntersectRaven 2.6.35_AVS-925mV_CFS_20100705_2204
Recovery: RA Amon recovery v. 1.7.0.1
I had this once before with my HTC Hero. I tried swapping batteries, different chargers and nothing would bring it back to life.
HOWEVER! I plugged the phone into my PC via the USB and voila! Phone came back to life. I charged the phone fully via USB and then it worked fine with the mains charger after that.
Strange I know but hopefully this solves your problem.
Thanks for your reply, unfortunately that did not help.
I can hear a constant white noise when I hold the phone to my ears while plugged in to both wall / usb. But the charging led doesn't turn on and I can't power on the phone at all.
I also tried holding down trackball, volume down, and power for 5 secs.
Just trying to see if there's anyway to bring it back before calling HTC for a replacement... Does anyone know how much it'll cost for the replacement? Is it full $530?
Well if its not starting up at all then it shouldn't be bricked.. So i think you should still be under manufacture warranty since the phone still hasn't been out for a year so you should be able to get a free replacement because that's a manufacture defect.. So yeah try calling HTC or Google
Could be just battery... its definitely not bricked though, ask them to send you a new batt

Unfortunately if you read his sig... it may not be as easy as that.
Why? Coz he's rooted? HTC has good cust service. There have been lots of cases where HTC still honored replacements due to manufacture defect or hardware issues even after the device has been rooted. If they can't turn it on they wouldn't even know its rooted. Still I wouldn't mention it to them while trying to get a replacement though.

It's definitely not the charger or the battery as I have two N1 and I tried another battery. It also won't turn on with the charger connected.
I already called HTC for a swap. Hopefully they won't charge me for the replacement since it's unlocked.
Thanks for the replies

I have the same problem. It was preceded by my phone going into Car Mode for no reason and also thinking I was USB connected when I was connected to a charger.
I have sent the phone to HTC who want me to pay for a new motherboard as the bootloader is unlocked. They sent me a picture of the phone showing the bootloader was unlocked but for some reason they sent me a photo of someone elses phone (mine is black and the photo is of a silver one). I now have an escalated ticket to sort this out - has been open since Monday. I am losing patience with HTC.........
Same here... I don't have HTC Warranty, what can i do?

Mine was having the same trouble. Car mode, not charging and usb host mode warning. I made some alterations suggested in another thread as: Turn off fast boot, and choose no screen lock and reboot. The phone charged at night, but it was turned off. I'll get home and see what's up. The worst thing for me is that I'm in Brazil and we get no support here. I'll have to send it to the US, to a friend so he can send to htc. Didn't get to see if it connects to the pc. I'll be pissed if it doesn't.
Oh, mine is completely stock. Didn't unlock bootloarder or S-OFF
Phone is working just fine now. Recharging when on, no more car app going crazy. I only turned off fast boot and lock screen, rebooted and problems solved.

I already fixed this charging issue...it has nothing to do with HW.
Just replaced this parts shown in the attached image below
I don't know what is happend but the phone is charging now.I buy an LG G2 and let the phone off one week and after that when I plugged in charger everything is normal. The problem now is with the microphone now because when I call somebody he can't hear me,but I can hear the other person. If I activate the speaker everything is good and I can use my phone for calls. Now the phone is in service and I will reply with results when I will get it back.
I have the same problem, there are many topics about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332046&highlight=charge&page=3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417377&highlight=charge&page=3
And I have read many theories about the causes of this problem:
1) damaged usb port
2) virtual sd-card corrupted
3) damaged proximity sensor
But apparently the only solution is send it to warranty...
I am kinda having the same problem...
I can charge when its on but it has to be with certain chargers...
like a usb wall charger but not certain standard ones
charges in the car no problem and when off..
But this only recently happened when I flashed a new Rom...
I restored back to another rom and it charges no problem...
So now I think it has something to do with the freq of how the phone is clocked at...
Im testing right now to see if I clock it to something different over or under it might fix the problem...
Will post results
Solved

Yeah i just solved. Thanks god.
I had the same problem after totally discharge the phone and try to charge it with a generic charger.
The device didnt charge when ON and didnt connect to USB neither.
It starts putting itself in car mode and USB host mode.
I was going to try a defferent kernel when i re-unlocked the phone and rooted it (i install TWRP2 v2.6.3.3)
in my way to install the kernell (and change the ROM) i did a factory wipe with the TWRP2 tool and then
i noticed that the phone starts charging again.
It is like kew again.
I hope this help a bunch of people out there, i made a hugh investigation and no one have any idea, they
keep telling you that is a hardware problem. If the phone dont charge it all than is a hardware problem if
it charges when is OFF or in Fasboot mode than is a software problem.
Sorry for my english. Spread the word.
email: [email protected]
Mine stopped charging, battery is now empty and it's completely unresponsive. It doesn't charge, LED doesn't blink, I can't boot it(not even in bootloader). What can I do? It's still under warranty, but the bootloader is unlocked and I have installed a custom ROM. Do you think they will notice that because it doesn't boot at all and they don't open the phones in Croatia(where I live) as far as I know because they don't have the right equipment so they just exchange them. Should I just try sending it?

he tried that. But that option is not working
Alright, I noticed about 3-4 days ago that I was waking up in the morning to almost no charge gained on my phone. I figured my computer turned off or something and my phone just didn't get charged via the USB port. I've now realized that when using specific USB cords (Only one out of 5 that I have works without this issue at the moment), my phone charges for about 5 minutes and then goes into this weird mode where it displays the clock time as a screensaver sort of screen and it stops charging my phone WHILE being plugged in.
As soon as I unlock my phone, I see a steering wheel icon at the top left in my notifications that says my phone is in car mode. Before I can pull down to see what it is or go into the menu settings to see if I can disable it, it turns off and disables again. I went through my ROM toolbox and found no signs of "Car" or "Car Mode" applications installed since I remember seeing "Car" in most rom installations.
It's becoming very frustrating because most times, I plug in my USB cord and my phone begins to charge and then 2-3 minutes later it just stops and goes into that mode. Sometimes it's instant and sometimes it won't work at all. I don't think it's an internal phone problem though because I have a cheap USB cord I found in my closet that is flawless and doesn't bring me this issue.
What could this be? Is my HTC One on it's last legs or what? I don't have my upgrade for another year so I'm really hoping this isn't too serious. The USB cords I do own are in great condition and wouldn't all suddenly stop working at once, so I see no reason to blame those. If anyone is wondering, I'm using CyanogenMod 11 right now, but this is a fresh installation and previously was using a very stable ARHD 6.1 GPe ROM. I also don't think the rom's I'm using have anything to do with it.
I don't know much about this stuff so I'll just leave some other information if it's needed. I have the SuperCID thing done, my phone is rooted and my bootloader is unlocked obviously along with having S-Off. I'm also using TWRP's latest version.
Any help would be really, really appreciated...
Also, to add onto what I said about the screensaver/car mode:
When I unlock my phone while being plugged in and the car mode turns off, my phone doesn't go back to charging unless I un-plug the USB cord and re-plug it in. This is when it usually begins to stop charging seconds after putting it in.

It may be a kernel problem, try a different ROM.
Also try cleaning the USB port with compressed air.

I've been researching it and found a few similar issues and apparently there's no fixes for it. I'm more or less stuck with this for another year until my upgrade. There's a small fix for it but it's a pain in butt to remember:
I have to turn my HTC One off, plug it into the USB for charging and then turn it on and it'll charge correctly.
I've also noticed a major decline in battery life as well. I went from 78% to 71% in 10 minutes a bit ago. Really disappointing seeing as how I've already done so much to this phone I probably couldn't even sell it let alone have a conversation with HTC about it since I've killed any kind of warranty for it so badly.
Damn damn damn damn damn.

I'll try to list all symptoms and procedures I've tried here. I recently dropped my phone and smahed the screen - sent off to motorola repair center and it has now been fixed. It arrived in the post 2 hours ago, so I immediately plugged it in (usng the turbo charger).
As expected the battery icon came up, first the solid icon, then it moved on to the charging icon.
Half an hour later I checked it, it was still "charging" but not a drop of power had gone into it. So I tried a different cable with the turbo charger, a lower powered one. Exactly the same response.
When I tried to power the phone on with conventinal method, the screen went blank and no activity was evident.
So I managed to boot into bootloader by holding down power and volume down (i think) button while pluggin it in simultaneously. This worked.
I set up my phone, wifi, sim etc... but notice the batttery icon has not displayed any charge. I go into settings and the battery settings IS MISSING! As if the phone has no battery in it.
So I decide to plug it in via USB to my laptop, no response at all, not even a charging icon. Different cable, same again.
I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what the issue may be, as it's been away for 3 weeks being repaired and I can't afford another 3 weeks without this phone as I'm an android developer and need it to regularly test my apps.
Interesting enough, a piece of paper arrived with the repaired phone stating that a live call and a software update had been implemented on it in the workshop. Leading me to believe that it was fully functional after its repair.
Any ideasand I would be hugely grateful.
Thanks guys.
Just an update -
I've been on the phone to motorola, they are sending a jiffy bag and it's going back to the repair center. This time under warranty.
I'd really like a fix now though :/ although I've tried everything under the sun.

It seems some hardware issue. As you've mentioned that charger is not helping then I should say, charging IC has some faults

It's in a jiffy bag ready to go back to SBE for repair. My case has been "escalated". All under warranty, thanks for the input. I think you're right it must be a hardware issue, I've tried everything to get it to work but the batter is basically not being recognised.
I'm more annoyed now at the fact I've paid £100 for a "repair", and will have to wait at least another week for this turnaround :/.
Wow, £100? Were you offered the Motorola insurance when you purchased your phone? I bought it because I wasn't sure if I could get insurance on my phone since it's not yet available with my carrier (Verizon).

I thought £100 was quite reasonable for a new phone with a smashed screen, particularly one as large and high quality as the n6. Not to mention the digitiser being attached.
I'm in the uk, apparently moto care is only available in the US at the moment.
My insurance, once the phone is returned, will be in the form of a ludicrously heavy duty case with built in screen protector!
