3G dongle scam - Off-topic

So here's a new scam I've not heard of before... Some time ago I bought a cheap Huawei E1750 3G dongle off eBay. At least, that's what I thought I'd bought. Today it turns out it's a E1552 which is half the speed and worth about 1/4 the price!
So people out there are taking E1552 innards and putting them into E1750 cases and making it look very convincing, complete with anti-tamper stickers.
In case you're still reading, the way to work out what you've really got is to paste your IMEI number into this web site: Mod edit: Spammy link removed.
I also confirmed the version via various ATI commands too.
Be careful out there!
R.

I feel like the imei check is the real scam and this thread should be deleted

NIIICE!!!! thank u
Except for a few covers and screen protectors, its all just generic phone accessories. Also, i got a good chuckle from the Memory section selling microSD cards with "Compatible with Google Nexus S Phone" at the bottom of each listing. Technically I guess they explain that away by selling a 56-in-1 Media Reader, but in that case even an old Compact Flash card could be listed as Nexus S compatible.
Oh well, got my hopes up for a sec.
Another templated generic accessories site like the rest. Nothing to write home about.

Captivates on Amazon?

Are the Captivates being sold on Amazon safe to buy? I wonder how did the sellers get them since they are new and unlocked. I also wonder whether they might be refurbished.

I purchased two of them, and should be getting them tomorrow. I'll let you know what my experiences are. From the reviews though it looks like SOME sellers are being sneaky, and that other people have gotten truly new devices.
Great! Thanks.
I also read the reviews but wanted to make sure..

Well both of the ones that showed up for me were the same...
They have a clause on the side of the box saying (approx) " this phone was refurbished with oem and replacement parts and is not affiliated with any OEM..."
-NON original packaging. They're in a Samsung box instead of the original AT&T box. It says "new" on it under the condition.
-No manuals or any kind of paperwork
-Comes with a charger and phone
-phones had sloppily applied sticky plastic covers on every surface but look totally new. Like perfect new.
-Batteries are dated from 2010 (maybe consider replacing, or use them anyway)
Hard to say how they got into the sellers hands in these funny boxes, and I don't know how to explain the plastic covers, but they look and feel new. I can't find a scratch anywhere on either phone so it looks legit to me. I'll probably be keeping them. Still a killer deal in 2012 for a phone with these specs. I'm personally using mine as a media player and this far exeeds what's on the market at this price point IMO.
Enjoy!
I see. Well I hope they work well for you. Thanks for the detailed reply.

No prob. I just hope its useful info for someone.

Clamshell Keyboard

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why Google and Samsung seemingly refuse to develop a competent and attractive keyboard solution. Especially with the Microsoft Surface Touch and Type covers selling so well with the actual Surface. The Nexus 10 has such an ideal connector in the pogo pins, and creating a keyboard dock with a hinge could not possibly involve heavy R&D costs. The market is clearly there. I would love to see a third party maker, like the creators of the ClamCase for the iPad, come up with a solution. The new ClamCase Pro is absolutely beautiful and greatly increases the productivity potential of the iPad. I'd buy one for the Nexus 10 in a heartbeat. I suppose I should not be surprised as we have yet to see an official pogo charger, although the one I bought works rather well, from either Samsung or Google. Both are doing a horrendous job of supporting a flagship tablet.
That was the rant portion of this post, my apologies.
I'm very curious to see what the best solutions everyone has come up with. Yes, I have perused all the other threads regarding the topic, and I've found the answers and workarounds less than appealing. So unless Google and Samsung miraculously come to their senses and release an accessory that should have been available 3 months ago, I'm hoping that one of the brilliant minds on here will spark some hope or joy into my search. So if you don't mind, please share your ideas, opinions, and possible solutions that I may be able to try out and attempt to assuage my growing frustration.
I just hook up a Bluetooth keyboard and put the tablet on a stand.
From a business standpoint, it's a waste of good R&D money to try to develop an integrated keyboard solution for a tablet. Nexus devices always have vestigial ports and plugs, and this is just due to Google's lazy practice of axing a particular feature over cost concerns, and then they just ask the hardware manufacturer to leave the remnants of it in rather than spend more money revising the design.
People that really need keyboards and mice will already have a preferred Bluetooth or OTG USB solution, meanwhile the OS itself doesn't require nor is it designed around those input devices. Personally I find it annoying and slow to use the OS with a mouse and keyboard, and only use the keyboard if I have a table nearby and need to type for extended periods of time. If such an occasion wasn't so rare, I probably would have bought an actual laptop or Chromebook instead.
Microsoft makes a point of marketing the Surface as more of a business device, but the RT still fell flat in that regard (wtf no Active Directory integration?), and the Pro is obscenely expensive for a device that doesn't offer any additional business features that can't be accomplished by a cheaper Windows 8 laptop. Keyboards and mice on tablets are niche features, and most people balked at the fact that a touch cover for the Surface RT costs an extra $100, which was also a pretty terrible keyboard overall. Google wasn't ready to make the same mistake, because historically Samsung charges obscene amounts of money for their accessories as well.
If given the choice between a $30 Motorola Bluetooth keyboard that requires its own batteries, or a $70-$100 Samsung keyboard that hooks into the pogo pins, I'd prefer the $30 option. I use my tablet like a tablet, and use a desktop or laptop when I need to do actual work. Trying to shoehorn my tablet into being a laptop replacement often ends in failure and disappointment, so I just accepted its limitations and moved on.
i've just ordered this keyboard. looks nice.

Interesting. Looks identical to the Minisuit Case I order a couple weeks ago that is still on preorder:

Maybe it's time to cancel that order and go with Amazon.

I don't know if that would make a difference. I ordered mine a couple days ago and Amazon estimates three to six weeks for delivery. I will let you know if I get it sooner.

Thanks. I didn't cancel and will also keep you posted.
I see now that minisuit has changed the picture to the black one - it was originally the brushed aluminum - so this should be a fun wait and see experience.
I received an email today saying they are out of the black ones until next weekend if I want to wait or they can send me a silver now. Either way they're offering a 20% refund for the inconvenience. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I wanted the black one.

I noticed from the pictures that this clam-shell keyboard and the other 2 i found on amazon all have a big piece of plastic that sticks out right in front of the space-bar key... i suppose its necessary for it to close properly with the N10....
When anyone gets it, please let us know if it get on the way of typing normally!
Thanks!
So any reviews?
Yeah I have been watching these keyboards as well. I love how they snap onto the nexus to protect it.

Anyone know a good site to sell used laptop?

Does anyone know a good site to sell my used laptop?
Not crazy about ebay because i've already canceled one ad on my account, if i cancel another i might get charged a penalty (if i end up selling it somewhere else while in the mean time... i want to sell it fast)
Not crazy about craigslist because the laptop has signs of cosmetic wear especially on the lid (does not impact performance purely cosmetic) but in the eyes of a non tech savy buyer that = worth much less.
Best buy trade in is a joke they offered me like $100 for my gs3 which i sold on swappa for $270.
All the hundreds of sites that give instant quotes seems a little sketchy because theres a bunch of identical sites, all of them ask for little to no info for the quote, they say send us the laptop THEN you get paid. Also the quotes are pretty low.
And sites like gazelle don't have a category for regular laptops.. only macbooks and iphones.
It's a hp dm4 1060 with a core i5, 4gb ram, 500HDD, 13" screen. Paid $650 for it 3 years ago i really want to get $300-350 for it at least, its worth a hell of alot more than that. Anyone have any advice?
Cell trader online - Just Google it
You can use me as a referral. Same username. Introduce yourself and follow the sellers layout. They have a tablet/laptop forum.

Free stuff for honest review, no longer a thing?

So i remember when I got my Note 5, Note 7, and LG V20 there were plenty of threads that offered items such as cases, screen protectors, etc all for free if the user posted a review.. Are things like that no longer allowed here? I have a vendor friend from China who still does this, but it's via Amazon.. Just checking to see if XDA disallowed this type of stuff and seeing if maybe that's why none of those posts pop up here anymore..
Thanks!
Your a bit late. There was about 3 of them right before the phone released.
How can it be free and honest? ?

It's highly unlikely to be an unbiased and therefore helpful review. It's getting silly on Amazon now too. Take a look at some of the tempered glass screen protectors for this phone. Quite a few are highly rated, but are from obvious shill reviews and NOT verified purchases. And the fwe verified purchases? All 1 or 2 star reviews from unhappy people suckered by the 5 star reviews. Filter by verified purchase always!

I agree. I've made a few negative reviews on Amazon. Then the seller emails me to remove review via bribe with a refund ? WTF hence why some shoddy items seem to get high star review counts.

For Amazon reviews, I highly recommend Review Meta. They have a couple of Extensions and Add-Ons for browsers that can help you sift out inflated/fake reviews and give you a more realistic rating of items, and it explains why certain reviews are shady too. Of course, it doesn't help for some of the less reviewed items, but their site has very helpful info about how to spot paid and fake reviews. Highly Recommend!!
Companies would give out free items to most people who posted in the thread, now, it seems like they make you fill out a form and they add you to their email list and don't send anything out.
About a year ago, Amazon did away with all of the free for honest review things that they could. They probably still exist, but they get rid of sellers who do it whenever they can. There used to be entire sites that did nothing but hook people up with free or discounted stuff for honest reviews. I got burned a few times by products that are rated 4.8 stars but are absolute crap. I'm glad to see it go. There is no way that you're going to get a pile of unbiased reviews when you're just giving people stuff.
So, have you been honest on your reviews of free products?
Care to link the class to some of your online reviews for critique?

Amazon made a “for show” effort to remove those reviews, but biased/shill reviews still exist there and all over the internet.
Disagree that all 4 star and up reviews are biased. Disagree that the review system bears no fruit and is uselesss.
When I had the HTC one m8 a phone case company contacted me on xda. They sent me a phone case and it was pure garbage. Taking the phone in and out a few times it lost its shape and would say around the phone. I told the company of my findings and he said many had said the same thing. If the fixed it or not I don't kn now but last I heard from them. Asked if I should return it and they said do what ya want with it. So I through it in the trash.
I don't mind being contacted but I don't expect to see free stuff for honest reviews.
Like with my zero lemon extended battery for the v20. Got a 90% discount from them. So I reviwed it on Amazon and zero was upset that I got a discount. Told them I wasn't lying on my review and if they wanted the battery back I would be more than happy to return it to them. I won't lie. I gave them a 4 star because they cheaper out on the cover and made a rubber case to go on the back. To me would allow all sort of dust and other contaminant easy access in to the phone

XDA blocks the companies from doing that because it violate their terms, and they want those companies to pay for the advertising not get it from xda users.
Yeah I got chargers, phone cases, cables, Bluetooth speakers, etc all free for review in the past, but it seems those programs have gone astray. I do see how they could be used in a negative way though, kinda crappy.. I'd be totally honest too lol, like if the thing didn't even turn on I'd make sure to mention that in the reviews lol..
