[Q] Issues with using an alternative SMS app - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys!
Recently, I bought an HTC One and because I'm switching from a Nexus device, I installed as many stock Android apps as possible from the Play Store.
Including the stock SMS app, which seems to bring some problems:
1. Even after disabling notifications inside the Sense SMS app, it still has influence on the unread counter. My new android stock SMS app now always shows a "(1)" on its icon, even if there are no unread messages. After starting the sense stock messaging app once, the counter disappears ...but only till a new message comes in.
2. I often get a "message not sent" notification when using the android stock SMS app, but the message is being sent though. Some seconds later the message is marked as sent and everything is okay (Transmission report is active).
Do you have any ideas how to fix these issues? The easiest way would be to disable the sense messaging app, but I'd like to leave my bootloader locked for a while, so I'm looking for a solution without having root.

Bump

Any ideas?

stock messaging app required for other messaging apps

Hey guys. So I was in terminal deleting the stock apps that I don't need to have and one of those apps which I deleted was the stock messaging app, I did this because I was using hancent. Well now I am not receiving text messages
- It all started after I deleted the stock app, I am not sure if it started immediately after or a while after
- I was using handcent and I noticed that I was getting the pop up received thing and the quick reply option but in the actual handcent app under each conversation the incoming message was not there.
- I then switched to chomp sms to see if that would fix it. Now I am not getting the quick reply popup message received (in chomp)
Are there any suggestions to fix this or knowledge about this topic? Do you need to have the stock messaging app inorder to have other messaging apps work? Oh ya, outgoing messages still work.

Handcent and Messaging

Hey guys,
I just recently got my HTC hero and I have a question about the messaging app. First of all, I am currently using Handcent mainly because if you use the stock app, texts always show up on the lock screen even if you are using the pattern lock. That is annoying, and I don't understand what the point of the pattern lock is if you can just see my texts without having to even unlock my phone...anyway, so I am using handcent and it's fine. I've made sure to remove notifications on the stock app so that I don't get double notifications, but my question is: is there a way to delete the stock app? I mean is the phone going to slow down since it is getting texts from 2 apps, does that make sense? Even though the notifications are disabled for the stock app, the texts still go there and they are also going to handcent...So basically i would like to know if:
1. i can delete the stock app (i have rooted my phone so...)
2. does it matter that the phone is pulling texts to two different apps
3. is there a way to make my texts not go to my lock screen, if so i would just not use handcent
Finally, on handcent, i will oftentimes get a text twice from people. does anyone have this problem?
Ok tahnks!
1. Don't delete the stock messaging app.
2. From what I've read on these forums, Handcent basically gets texts from the stock messaging app to get texts. Your phone isn't really doing twice the amount of work.
3. Hmm, I use handcent, and I disabled notifications on the stock app, and I don't see any texts from the stock app on my lock screen.
I also get texts twice once in a while. I think it has something to do with scrolling down the conversation window while the text is being received... not sure, but that's what I noticed.

Look at handcent as a theme for ur stock text app.
Deleting stock would make text not work.
No way to turn that off in stock text for the lockscreen
Dbl text is the carrier at times. It happens. No way to stop it.
My experience is different, I deleted the stock app (mms.apk) and my text work just fine. As long you as you remembered to turn on auto retrieve in your handcent's setting under "Receive message settings". It has been working for me without any issue.
Handcent and Google Voice don't play well with one another. Handcent won't display my Google Voice number despite what the Google Voice settings say. It also behaves... oddly for me. I really wish it would work the way I want it to, though. Hot damn, is it pretty. I love the interface and the customization options. I just hate the fact that it won't play nice with Google Voice. So... ugly texting through my preferred number, it is!
Have you tried chomp sms? Similar look, not as customizable, but may play better with gv

I have tried Chomp. But, as far as I can tell, when not sending from the Google Voice application, it tells people that it came from my cell number, not my Google Voice number. The whole point of Google Voice, at least for me, is to have one number forever, not switch between them.

[Q] text message notifications bug

ok I am having the worst luck with TINY problems on this D4. so I was having a problem where blurcontactsync was causing my contacts to crash if I tried to use them, I found a simple fix to rename the apk to .bak, and it worked
Now I noticed that when I get a text message I do not receive any kind of notification. No smiling message in the notification bar, no notification tone, no vibrate. I have gone into text message settings and set the tone, I have gone into general settings and set the tone. I even went into titainium backup and froze "Messaging, and Universal Inbox" because I thought they might be interfering just like the blur contacts sync. no luck Still do not receive any kind of indication not even the LED flashing.
all my other notifications work fine, if I get an email, or a missed call I get a notification tone and a flashing green light....I extensively searched XDA and people were having this problem with the droid X but it was some kind of update bug and was fixed with a new patch....anyone have any ideas what I could do to get my notifications working again??
Hmm I can't replicate this problem on mine but do you use the stock text messaging app? Try a third party texting app like Handcent and then send a test to yourself from text.vzw.com and see if you get the notification.

yea I'm currently using the stock app I was hoping to avoid a 3rd party app but I guess Im going to dive into that. I can just freeze my stock msg app right?

I wouldn't freeze the stock messaging app, I believe that's still necessary even with a 3rd party app (speaking of, I highly recommend GoSMS, but have also been happy with Handcent in the past).
I remember seeing over on DroidForums.net that someone froze their stock messaging app and wasn't receiving any texts after that. Give it a shot but if you don't get any texts for a while I'd unfreeze

Messages app not working

It's been almost a week since the stock Messages app started acting up.
If I try to open the app by tapping the icon, it will start, briefly show the messages and close itselt with an error prompt that allows me to close it or send an error report. If I receive an SMS and tap the notification, the app opens and shows the message, I can reply and it works fine this way.
Restarting the phone sometimes solves this right away but it appears at random times. I don't text that much via SMS (mainly WhatsApp and Skype) but it's annoying to not be able to open the app to send an SMS on the rare occasions I need to.
I have an unlocked US model, I'm not rooted or anything. Using stock with Nova Launcher Prime and a couple icon packs.
Has anyone experienced this problem with the Messages app?
I'm currently waiting for the 4.2.2 update to show on the phone. I hope this is fixed in this update.
If the update doesn't fix it, I will try Textra or SMS Now. I've read good things bout them but I really didn't need an extra messaging app since I received or need to send 1-3 SMS a day.
Having a 3rd-party SMS apps will interfere with the stock Contacts and Dialer apps in some way?

First thing I would do is go into settings > apps >all. Go to messages then force stop. Reset defaults and delete data.. That should reset anything you may have changed on error. If that doesn't work do a factory reset. If that doesn't work then I would say your launcher has a conflict

I already deleted its cached data and reset default options. Could be Nova Prime Launcher having a conflict with Messages, but the strange thing is that it started to happen long after installing Nova.
I'm waiting for the 4.2.2 update. When it shows I will update and do a factory reset.
Thanks

Android Messages on Note 9

I have chosen to use Android Messages vs the the Samsung Messages app that orginally came with the phone. I personally prefer Android Messages as it's simple and not so compacted. Anyhow recently, I notice I can't get notifications for some reason its like it's set to a timer that will allow the notification to be on the lock screen or pull down menu. Perhaps another way of describing it is: it's when I have multiple sms messages but nowhere was I informed that I had messages, but if only one message comes I get the proper notification. It's weird as... All my notifications are properly all set up and the app is updated to the latest verison..
Hi, did you get a solution to this, I have a similar problem on my Note 9 Default SMS App, I never get notifications when I get any texts. I can only see them when i open Messages APP
