[Q] More FAQs to answer - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Before I buy a Windows Phone 8 mobile (Nokia Lumia 920), Can I know if somethings that I consider them as issues in Windows Phone 7.8 are solved or not:
- Can WP8 send and receive files via Bluetooth?
- Can WP8 show a storage drive when I plug it into the USB?
- Can WP8 import and export media or pictures without the need of any software like Zune in WP7.X
Thanks

yes to all...
no more Zune... now you can simply plug with USB and use File Explorer on PC or use Windows Phone app...
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8

Mind you, the USB view is only of the documents and media libraries; you still can't (without hacks) view the application stores or anything like that.
Once again, a reminder: SEARCH BEFORE POSTING please! These are, as you say, Frequently Asked (and Answered) Questions! You don't need to ask them here too.

So I can't access isolated storage of apps? for example, downloaded videos of an undefined application couldn't be reached? or the new sdk allows the developer of that undefined application to stored his videos in a public library?
And about searching for these questions, I've searched alot, but no clear answers..

file transfer to/from HD7

question about file transfering between a pc and hd7.
when i connect hd7 to my pc it doesn't appear as a storage device, as it does all modern devices with android.
i read about the way around, but it didn't work for me.
zune helps to transfer only a number of file types - like media files or pictures.
just one sample - i've installed freda reader, but can't put any epub-file to read! i can't even attach it to an email - well, i can attach, but can't save it on the phone - it says, that .epub is just not supported by the phone!
so, the question is: is there any chance to transfer any file from my pc to hd7, and, for example, to save any attached file on the phone?
you can email it, but it has to have the proper program to open it.
For freda, the best work around right now is to use caibre ebook library on your desktop, set it up as a server, then you can add them to freda.
If you search for freda to wp7, you should find step by step instructions.
Check this out:
http://www.turnipsoft.co.uk/freda/calibre-how-to.htm
Now I just realized HTC HD7 with the GREAT Windows Phone OS is SUCKS ! I'm facing the same problem too, NO FILE TRANSFERRING accept songs, photos & videos ! Is that all ?
I'm wondering why HTC came out with a phone like this with no mass storage support ? More worst than apple with itunes, at least I'm able to add/remove apps through itunes. With ANDROID, I can do almost EVERYTHING I want ! What about the mighty Zunes ? SUCKS !
Do you know why people want to migrate their HD2 Windows to Android ?...
---------- Post added at 11:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:02 AM ----------
Do you mean using email to attach files/data to do as file transfer ? What about I'm going transfer a gig or 4 gig ? Transferring a 4 gigabyte files over the internet ? Woo... I know you're kidding, right ?
Some more, do I have to know freda to force using my HD7 for file transferring ?
If I have to do some complicated steps to make my smartphone working, then how can I called my phone is a SMARTPHONE ? Because it is not smart at all !
Friend, I'm not criticizing or scolding what. I'm feeling that I'm being like an idiot holding a stupid phone that I can't do anything to it.
It's just a different way of thinking about storage, that's all. To improve security, and reduce the risk of a bad app trashing your phone, Microsoft adopted a model where pretty much everything operates in a 'sandboxed' mode. You are not meant to share data between apps on the phone (except using copy-paste ).
If you're coming to WP7 from Android, (or from WM6) that model is going to seem strange, but it doesn't make the phone unusable. You just need to get used to the idea that each app will have its own preferred cloud location(s) for keeping its data. So for media, it's Zune; for MS Office it's SkyDrive or SharePoint, etc.
And third-party apps can provide their own choice of locations (so for example, among the book-reader apps, Freda offers you SkyDrive or DropBox, Bookviser lets you chose between SkyDrive or a dedicated Bookviser cloud store ... ).
Now of course if you prefer to think of your phone as a mass-storage device, WP7 won't suit you, and you should use a different OS (or unlock your WP7 phone if you must).

[Q] Htc Hd7 as a USB drive.... Now What?

I managed to follow the instructions found at knowyourcell.com about turning your HD7 into a USB drive... It will open and read as a drive, but I can't transfer or read anything... Help would be appreciated. I am a noob so please take it easy on me.... What now? How can I open it up?
Instructions:
1. Open Windows Registry Editor by typing regedit in your start menu
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
3. Perform a search for ZuneDriver
1. The search should yield a result similar to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00\6&27ffd631&0&0000\Device Parameters\WUDF
4. Click up one level to the Device Parameters key
5. Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1
6. Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
7. Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1
8. Change EnableDefaultAutoPlaySupport
Thats what i saw in my Explorer.
Tried to cpy a mp3 file into Music, that did not work.
After a restart of hd7 i came only to the level Storage - no sub folders are visable any more now.
And even with my first attempt i had now folder for movies. May be as i do not have any movie in devices storage?
Now everything works fine.
It did'nt work, as there was a filtransfer by zune on his way to the phone. And even killing zune on pc blocked the storage card.
-So edit the registry as mentioned above
-connect your hd7 via usb to pc
-zune starts now
-kill all zune transfer processes
-kill zune
-go to your windows explorer
-you can copy and past media files now.
unfortunaly the office hub is not visable by this procedure.
But i think we are not far away do find out in very near future.
nice! thanks for this. it works.
Sweet!! Got it to work!! Thanks for the help HUMS... Now what? Is there any way to mod up a Ringtone folder? I tried putting in a WMA ringtone and added the folder but no dice... Any suggestions?
great. it works... thanx!

sorry m8 - no idea.
For the moment only copy and paste available for media data.
As every program has its own hub.
Hi all, I'm getting a little frustrated with my HTC HD7. I installed Zune, but it wouldn't recognize my phone (it keeps saying "connect device") and I changed the registry as mentioned above also but whenever I plug the phone in, nothing happens and it changed all the registry values back to what it was before. Also the computer keeps failing to install the phone. Anyone with any helpful info help please? thanks.

have you checked your USB cable or your USB port on PC?

Yes I have; I have 6 USB ports and tried all of them. My wife's iphone and my HTC HD2 connects perfectly to the computer. When I plug in the HD7 however, it takes a charge, and windows will try to install it, then says "installation failed" and thats it. I wonder if its problem with vista, with everyone that is successful at connecting their devices, anyone on vista?

OK. Lets split it to two issues:
1. you want to copy media files (Music, video, photos) to and from your phone
Use mouse and drag and drop what you want to sync with your phone. Its so simple.
2. you want to copy any other types of files to and from your phone
Its pointless, because files will NOT be vissible to WP7 and if you want to move files from A to B, than use what is more appropriate and designed for this purpose, like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_flash_drive#Uses

I wanted to try this method because zune was in no way connecting to my hd7. I found the problem though. its my operating system. i plugged it into my laptop running windows 7 and it connected perfectly.
Did the required registry edits but unable to view any folders inside the Storage device on the computer, both computer & zune detects the phone though. Need to transfer a .cab file for installation of Satguide.
Would be great, except for the fact that wp7 doesn't use .cab files, only .xap files.

Transfering .pdf files over to the HD7

I've been tearing my hair out wondering how the heck am i gonna do this. Syncing via bluetooth through my laptop doesn't work (says hd7 wont accept file transfers) I tried uploading to gigasize.com, no luck, and I've tried emailing, but there's n email system big enough.
Anyone have ANY idea how i can transfer random files over for the HTC HD7?
SkyDrive is an option. Cloud-based storage free with your Live account (hotmail, msn, live)
This link will help with that.

thank you, I will give it a try! much appreciated
didn't end up working, the file i have is 100MB, the limited space on skydrive is 50MB =[ close but no dice, are there any other altenatives? can i bluetooth from one phone to the other?
My SkyDrive Account has 25 gigs?
I pay no money.
Ahhh. Individual file limit of 50megs.
yeah..... i MIGHT MIGHT have to truncate my class textbook into two halves =[
Okay I figured it out halfway if anyone is interested, I've used the site http://www.bonpoo.com/ ..... there you can upload it and email the link to your hotmail for your HD7.... then you can download it via browser, i just don't know how to KEEP it on the HD7 =[
This works on HTC HD7 have not tried on other devices
What we want to do
Read .pdf files on WP7 Device, without emailing them to yourself.
What you will Need
- Chevron Unlocked Hd7
If its not check this or the ultimate solution that worked for me this last Entry on this page quoted by me. At the same time make sure you Apply this to prevent it from relocking
- TouchExplorer installed on the Device.
If you don't have it get it from here
- Registry key on your Desktop to Enable Mass Storage.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/29/how-to-enable-usb-storage-on-windows-phone-7/
- Zune installed on Desktop
- .pdf files which you want to read on WP7
How to do it
1. Connect your Phone to Desktop using USB Cable.
2. Zune Starts and Sync Completes.
3. Close Zune.
4. Copy your .pdf files to the root of Storage (MyComputer\HD7\Storage)
5. Disconnect Phone from Desktop.
6. Start TouchExplorer on Device.
7. Go to "My Device/My Documents/Zune/Content/0400/01 or 02"
8. Here you will find your .pdf files with the name of 8.z or something .z extension.
9. Rename them to YourFileName.pdf.
10. Now Copy them to "My Device/Applications/Data/BC4F319A-____-____-____-____________/Data/IsolatedStorage.
11. Exit TouchExplorer.
12. Run Adobe Reader, and find your Pdfs listed there.
Hope it helps everyone here. Best of Luck and let me know if you face any issue.

Phone's unlocked and everything's working.... I ran into one problem though, when I transfer files over, it says "cannot copy (file name) "the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected"
any way you can help me figure this out?

Hi!
Try to set you screen lock to never:
Settings -> lock & wallpaper -> Screen time-out: never
Than try again the steps described in post #9.
After finished set back screen lock time-out to original value to preserve battery power.
Regards,
Cina.
Doesn't seem to work, but thank you for the insight =] I really appreciate everyone's help but i think i've come to terms with just simply giving up.... I'm reinstalling windows 7 and XP so i might jump back up and try it once more
You can try to e-mail the files to yourself or you can try other online storage services
Although the methods previously suggested might work, and they do with several limitations, I wouldn't advise them as they will either leave your files lost in the middle of hundreds of e-mails or pile your office hub in a completely unorganized fashion.
My solution is much better; simply create OneNote notebooks, organized anyway you see fit, insert your files and sync them to SkyDrive.
When you sync them with your WP phone you will have your pdf files organized and always available.
Never tried this method with any file larger than 50Mb but with smaller ones works like a charm
Cheers

[Q] Htc hd 7 bluetooth

Hi! When i want to send file from other phone to my htc hd7, i see message "not supported". How do i repair this?
The easy answer is to take a seat and pray that M$ come up with the goods. In other words you cant send anything over BT at this moment in time.
With WP7, the only way to transfer files is via Zune, SkyDrive or email em to your device. That's the reason why they disabled access to the storage card. I can't believe I'm saying this, but, I'm used to it now.

definetley not recommended. Easy way to screw up your sd card. WP7 does not have a file system as such, therefore transferring files can only be done via Zune and now in mango trough SkyDrive or email always. Read this answer from Microsoft: "WP 7 doesn't support any profiles that would allow you to transfer files via BT, so there is no point in trying to connect to a laptop. Your option is e-mailing a file to yourself.
In Mango you will have the option of saving the file to Skydrive via WiFi or Cell Data. Stil not directly to a laptop however.
Notice there is no file system, so no explorer that you could get to the file and say 'send via BT', no option within an open document menu that says 'send via BT'. There is no BT transfer directory, and if you could attach via BT the file explorer on your PC would not be able to navigate to a file to download, because, again, there is no visible file directory structure."

Pdf books and docs, other files solution

My apologies if had been mentioned before.
PC FILE DOWNLOAD on the market, works very well indeed. Just get it onto your phone as well as HFS on your computer and follow the set up instructions. Basically means you can connect your phone through USB and load files (other than pictures or music through Zune) off your computer. I got Adobe Reader and was finally able to load my entire PDF library. Once other format readers are available, I am sure the above tool will also be useful.
Easy to set up, few minutes and you'll be done. Enjoy!
grand merci ... thanks ...
Thanx for this. I was using windows live. This is sooo much faster and more managable. thanx!!!!!
Glad someone found it as useful as I did. I like to read books and inability to just load files on WP7 was a big handicap for me. Zune manages media files only and every other option was too cumbersome, especially if you have as many ebooks as I do.
Storage
Hi
i Like this ap
But i can't find where the files are stored
any idea?
Thanks
I just opened my Adobe Reader and all the books were there, so whatever is loaded in PDF format will be found in Documents. I guess if it's just docs in Word, you'll find them in Office. Or... you can use Explorer and check, I guess.
