Unable to root Htc one (sprint) - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am unable to root my htc one with sprint. I write the recoveries, to the deivce, and fastboot says it was ok.
When I try and boot to recovery, it hangs for approx 30 sec, then reboots to the OS.
I am currently running Android 4.3
S=Off
cid = spcs_001
hboot = 1.55.0000
radio = 1.00.20.0913_3
opendsp = v31.120.274.0617
os = 3.04.651.2
eMMC = boot 2048MB
tried to use fastboot erase cache a few times also
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I forgot to mention, I have tried to use fastboot boot (image), and it freezes, no matter which recovery image I try. I have tried twrp, and clockwork so far.

Fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Make sure you are getting the newest img file from twrp site. Make sure it's the Sprint ver.

Double checked, it is the latest file, and I also verified it is for Sprint. Thought the same thing.

I assume it used to work? I see you are s-off? I don't see what could be going on. You can always do a full ruu reboot and start over but it will wipe your phone.
I just saw you did a Fastboot boot img. Not sure what that could have done. Boot.img is your kernel. When your phone boots , does it work?

The phone it self, does work. Boots fine. My problem, is I cant get root anymore. It worked until I went back to factory on everything, so I could get the updates. Even recovery worked when I got that back to stock. I took the Ota updates, no I cant get into recovery, so I can re root it.
Tried to go back to stock like i did before, same issue on 4.22 now. followed same procedures for re lock, un lock bootloader, both times, and this time it wont load anything into recovery.

Go to settings, power when phone is booted. Make sure fastboot is not selected.

So after 2 days, it looks like I got this working.
Not sure why this fix made a difference, however it worked, for me.
I ended up having to flash an older recovery twrp image of 2.5.0.0 first. That atleast allowed me to boot into recovery, finally. Problem was, nothing on the touchscreen would work.
I rebooted the device back into the bootloader, then installed twrp 2.6.3.0
That worked great!

ICS upgrade - boot loop - can't fix - bricked?

I have searched the forums, and I can not find the answer to my specific situation. Please forgive me if it is there somewhere. The story…….
- last working ROM was VIVO ICS official, RUU installed. (RUU_VIVO_ICS_35_S_HTC_WWE_4.10.405.1_Radio_20.74.30.0833U_3831.18.00.11_M_release_266013_signed.exe). HBOOT was changed to 2.02 S-ON, bootloader locked. I unlocked via HTCdev. Before this I had IceColdSandwich 8.1.1, ENG Hboot S-OFF. I had originally used the GB downgrade ROM to S-OFF, and restored IceCold backup after this.
- I wanted to be S-OFF again, and so tried installing this zip using CWM Recovery, following the advice of tpbklake:
vivo_signed_WWE_4.10.405.1_ICS_SENSE36_5.zip Version 1.1
(from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756500&page=1)
- now boot loop. I tried reinstalling other ROMs which I have successfully installed in the past (GB downgrade, stock ICS), and also restore various backups, but all result in boot loop (stuck on white HTC screen). Each time I would use CWM Recovery to clear dalvik, cache etc.
- I have now followed 'fix' instructions in that same thread, ie. :
1. Download the file lib.zip from here: http://bit.ly/PwK4BH
2. Unzip the lib.img and place it on your PC where you have fastboot.exe installed.
3. Boot into FASTBOOT USB mode and then enter the following command:
fastboot flash lib lib.img
4. Download the file format_lib_update.zip from here: http://bit.ly/RIpEUL
5. Copy it to your SD card.
6. Boot into recovery and then install format_lib_update.zip
7. While in recovery format the SYSTEM partition.
8. Then reinstall vivo_signed_WWE_4.10.405.1_ICS_SENSE36_5.zip
But at step 3 I get the following:
C:\adb>fastboot flash lib lib.img
sending 'lib' (155648 KB)...
OKAY [ 27.553s]
writing 'lib'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 52.417s

Please help! I’m close to considering myself properly bricked, and using that as an excuse to go and buy a OneX.

OK, so what is the state of your HBOOT? Are you still HBOOT 2.02.0002 UNLOCKED?
When you are using the an unlocked HTC HBOOT and you flash a custom ROM in CWM, you then manually have to extract the boot.img file from that ROM's zip file and flash it manually in FASTBOOT USB mode. If you don't do that, you will get a boot loop.
What you need to do if you can still get into CWM and the bootloader is still UNLOCKED is reflash that ROM again and then flash the boot.img file in FASTBOOT mode and you should be ok.

Well then you can always relock the bootloader and then run the 4.10.405.1 RUU like you did originally. Then you can unlock the bootloader since you already have the unlock_code.bin file.

Once you get back to that point, unlock the bootloader, install ClockworkMod and then flash su-3.0.7-efghi.zip to root the official ROM. Then you should be able to rerun the downgrade process to get back to S-OFF.

Thanks very much. The stock ICS RUU has now installed successfully. I guess when I originally tried to reinstall it, I had left out the 'RELOCK' step, which is why it failed.
So now I am back to the start (stock ICS + HBOOT 2.02 S-ON), and want to get S-OFF and install your ROM zip. ,What I originally intended to do to get S-OFF was:
1) Unlock the bootloader, flash CWM Recovery, flash SU
2) Run downgrade GB RUU
3) S-off with Revolutionary
4) Install Blackrose HBOOT
5) Install your vivo_signed_WWE_4.10.405.1_ICS_SENSE36_5.zip
But step 2) failed with an unknown error. (I then tried to install your zip, and the rest is the sad history.....).
So what caused step 2 to fail? Did I need to relock the bootloader first?
Many thanks for your help, tpbklake

Any ideas anyone?
What is the status of your bootloader? Is it locked, unlocked or relocked? If it is locked you may have to answer n to is the phone rooted to give temp root. If not on page 76 of this post there is the same issue.

And fyi it will not change the h boot version, only the main ver which is reported at the end of the script.

[Q] HBoot only, no RUU available -- recoverable?

Attempted my first root and ROM flash.
Followed HTC Holiday Superguide instructions (I did skip the S-OFF bit) then tried to flash CyanogenMod 10 using these instructions. Got stuck on the CyanogenMod flash screen. Don't quite remember what I did in my panicked attempts to recover. I did relock the bootloader at some point.
Now the phone continually boots to HBoot.
Can't find the RUU I need anywhere (Telstra 3.44.841.3).
Should I return to Apple in shame having found myself not man enough for rooted Androids? Or can someone help me regain some self-respect?

Your set.. you should be able to flash your rom of choice and fastboot flash boot boot.im (I'm assuming your not S-OFF) and then the phone will boot up like it should. The boot.img file will be located in the ROM zip but you may have to push modules around to get wifi to work depending on the ROM.

Why isn't the RUU restoring the recovery partition/image?

I have an HTC One developer edition (64GB), and I've flash Clockwork Recovery to it.
However, when I relock the bootloader and install the RUU, it doesn't overwrite the recovery partition.
What can I be doing wrong?
I've tried fooling around with the "HTC Fast boot" (in the Sense menu, not the sdk fastboot) but I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong...

actually what are you trying to achieve?
Well, mostly I'm just trying to learn more about how Android works. I was able to restore the RUU before and it even removed the tampered boot loader warning but now my RUU doesn't seem to restore everything. It's very inconsistent so that's why I'm trying to figure out exactly how this works and what I might be doing differently.
Maybe I have to clear the (dalvik) cache before running the RUU?

it shouldn't be needed, you only need to lock your bootloader and then run the RUU and that will bring everything to stock

it worked in your case the stock recovery always gives that symbol there's nothing wrong with it
Maybe I'm not explaining it properly, but for example, I JUST relocked my bootloader and ran the RUU.
It restored successfully.
However, if I boot into the bootloader and then recovery, it boots into clockwork recovery! That means the RUU didn't overwrite my recovery partition...
Shouldn't the RUU restore the stock recovery?!

Try getting the .zip one and do a fastboot version. Works for me.

I'm not sure if you're also experiencing the recovery partition missing, like in my thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267008
Hmmmm, maybe that's my problem?
I've just flashed the ZIP, and everything looked like it worked fine... (I received the "please flush image" message and I re-ran the flash and it then completely successfully)
However, when I select [Recovery] from HBOOT, the screen flashes for a second, and then it returns to the HBOOT again. It does seem like the recovery partition is missing...?
Here is my fastboot log: http://pastebin.com/KQJjE78a
EDIT: When I unlocked my bootloader (fastboot flash unlocktoken), and then tried to enter recovery, it went back into clockwork recovery!!
The RUU/ZIP is absolutely, positively, not overwriting my recovery... (which is also why the bootloader still says "tampered" as well, because the entire stock image is not being 100% restored)
I have the same exact problem with my one dev edition.Hope someone can figure this out

Glad to see I'm not the only one!
I've decrypted the RUU ZIP file and extracted the signed recovery.img, but I think decrypting the ZIP changes the checksum so when I try to flash it to the bootloader it says the signature failed.
I've been trying all kinds of things and I have gotten it to work (and the tampered warning was removed), but I have no idea what combination of commands/images I used to get it working...
Hopefully somebody can help us

the stock one i mean..? where did you get it? from a nandroid backup or from the RUU itself?
The only way I have fixed this is flashing stock recovery from one of Mike's post ...but I think it's from the at&t model ...not sure if that makes a difference but I do get it working then

Hmmm, so there is a signed recovery image floating around somewhere? Any idea which post has it?
I've also been able to successfully get mine restored but it seems like it worked by some random chance.
Here's what I think I did differently:
* Turned off phone for five minutes
* Unplugged USB cable until I entered fastboot
I have no idea if that's why the RUU finally worked but I'd love to know for sure in case I need to perform this in the future.

Did you do the fastboot erase cache?
The way I got it back to stock recovery was doing this.
When I had CWM, I attempted to fastboot a different recovery using this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2158763&highlight=recovery+img
It installed but it never worked as the phone could not enter. Then I just fastboot the factory zip and it some how overriden the faulty recovery and it worked.
I'm not home now and hate using this app lol I'll post it when I get home ...but it's from dev mikes post

[Q] Can't boot into recovery HTC one

Hi -
Thanks for any help in advance. I'm a bit of a rookie round here, I've rooted and flashed my past 3 HTC phones but taken the easy route every time.
But today, I've used ADB commands to flash the revone binary and unlock and get s-off on my HTC one m7. It took me several tries, but it eventually worked (or at least said successful). So my HBOOT 1.44 says UNLOCKED & S-OFF.
So onto the next step. fastboot flash recovery recoverytwrp.img
...
Another success!
So, I reboot into bootloader and prompt recovery boot like I'm about to get HAM on twrp and flash some superuser files. It shows me a developer screen full of red print saying that it's booting into recovery, and then after a while, it just rebooted back into system.
It does this every time. I reflashed the image, I flashed the stock image, I tried the hansoon tool. each time I can't actually get into the recovery.
So this is where I'm stuck. Why can't I get anywhere with this?
EDIT & ANSWER;
Sprint phone needed Sprint TWRP image

This.
Just do evrything again until you finish installing custom recoveries. Before rebooting, erase the cache with "fastboot erase cache"

Gave that all a shot all over again. Still can't boot into recovery
Is fast boot off?
Use the original cable your One came with, go into bootloader power/vol - then open a cmd window
Now connect the One with your computer, don't use a USB 3.0 connection, and a different one then before.
In bootloader choose fastboot, that should change to fastboot USB
In cmd window point to your fastboot directory where you also copied the recovery to, I would try CWM touch for now.
Type cd c:\fastboot (or what your toolfolder is called)
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
That installs the recovery, you can select it in bootloader abd boot into it.

Ok , I see mysterious problem ))
Try, remaining unlocked, go back to s-on (you can always take s-off again) and check your recovery (enter and flashing) under s-on.

Is that something I can do with the revone binary? To be honest, I have no idea how to turn security back on. I can relock it and that may be about it.
I stumbled upon another thread, shares a common theme as my issue, but with a different twist. Using a superboot.img as a rooting method instead of flashing it via recovery. It somewhere says that the boot.img needs to be flashed as well, however I can't find a decent boot.img to flash. The superboot tool seems like unproven territory right now.
Here's the other thread, I've leafed through it and found no determinable answer for my particular issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39852757#post39852757
Do not apply revone to return s-on!
Use fastboot by "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3".
Be convinced that bootloader is unlocked before return to s-on.
Regarding your issue: I suspect that a certain code in HBOOT tries to install TAMPERED flag when sees custom recovery, but isn't able to do it correctly because s-off (bypassing security) and a certain mistake or exception conducts to reset phone.

Right now I've done all the above, I've got a *** TAMPERED *** and ***UNLOCKED*** and S-ON
I've been through 4 boots, 2 of them attempts to get to recovery. Now instead of recovery rebooting into system, it just shuts off now.
Where do you think I go from here?
I've just skimmed through the posts and didn't see this mentioned
If you are still able to boot into the system, download either GooManager (for TWRP) or RomManager (for CWM) and use either of those apps to install recovery. Once done, you can use the app to boot into recovery instead of the fancy ADB commands or button presses.

So both that method through ADB shell and GooManager require root. Every rooting method requires recovery, so I don't have perm root yet.
You quoted me, but answered not to me.
Read a post #26 from my link above
Possible Solution
Hello I have the same problem and the solution was:
1. Settings - Energy- Fastboot uncheked
2. Flash Recovery usin one all-in-one-kit
3. Erase Cache 3 times
4. Unplug to PC, and load into system normal
5. Turn off phone - via stock menu NOT FORCE TO OFF pressing the off button
6. Wait 2 minutes, and boot into HBOOT - Power + Volume(-) pressing
7. Choose recovery
Ready.. May these work for you! Let me know

[Q] Restoring and removing root from HTC One - CID Optus001

Hello all.
I made a mistake and didn't update to 4.2.2 before I unlocked and rooted my HTC One M7.
I downloaded the OTA System update and tried to install before I realised I can't update after rooting.
I've been trying to find how to remove root, update to 4.2.2 then root again, however I can't find the right RUU file to do this.
Could some please help out a newly converted Android user?
version: 0.5
version-bootloader: 1.44.0000
version-baseband: 4A.14.3250.13
version-cpld: None
version-microp: None
version-main: 1.29.980.17
version-misc: PVT SHIP S-OFF

meid: 00000000000000
product: m7_ul
platform: HBOOT-8064
modelid: PN0714000
cidnum: OPTUS001
So far I've restored to factory and that's it. Should I re-root?
Or would a better option be to relock and start again?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Do you still have a custom recovery installed?

Hello Cory.
Yes I have CWM Still installed
I've tried flashing firmware after relocking
I get this error while trying to do so.

At a guess I've got the wrong RUU / Stock firmware file.
I've looked around and I can't find it.
I did however find a nandroid optus file from buggy lawson with the correct CID and version main 1.29.980.x
Can I somehow use that?

You should be able to get the recovery.img from the nandroid _IF_ he took it without actually flashing the CWM or TWRP recovery to the phone when taking it. I do have a stock recovery from a Vodafone 4.1.2 (1.29.980.17) here that _should_ work on yours ...

In theory it should as the Optus phone is supposed to be the "unbranded" version which Vodafone also uses. But I don't know to be honest. This is my first Android device and the first thing I did was to (take a backup) and then convert to the Google Play Edition RUU
I'll send you a PM with the file location and you can download it if you want.
So I've just tried to reboot in recovery mode.
I currently have this showing
***TAMPERED ***
*** RELOCKED ***
*** Security Warning ***
and now I can't go into recovery it just keeps going back to the bootloader screen.
I've soft bricked, right?
Ok so at the moment I can't actually do anything in the bootloader even though it loads.
I can't even factory reset.
Do I need to root again to do anything?
Don't you need an unlocked boot loader to be able to flash a new recovery.img ?
Ok I've clearly done something very very wrong.
Is there anybody about who's able to help me out?
Starting to worry a little

Apparently I'm still rooted according to root checker basic.
So I've just tried to flash it. I get a signature verification error.
Also, if I go into the boot menu and select recovery it goes back to the boot menu again and displays *** Security Warning ***
So you obviously have the phone working again?
You can be rooted and be on the stock recovery. I am on my Google Edition, I flashed TWRP and used the latest SuperSU to root and when that was complete flashed the stock 4.3 recovery back on. I did receive my 4.3 OTA while rooted, but with stock recovery, BUT will lose root when the OTA applies.
Well it's loading but it's not working properly.
I don't know how to flash things over I keep getting a signature problem.
Basically I want to do a OTA upgrade to 4.2.2 or 4.3 whatever is available then root and start again .
From what I can gather my root is not working because I can't flash anything across.
Every time I try I get the signature failed error.
So you can boot into Android and have the phone running, it is on 4.1.2 and still rooted? Yes? You are still running the old CWM recovery as well?
For me what I would do if I were in that situation.
1) plug phone into computer
2) Make sure that HTC sync is not running
3) Go to my platform-tools folder and run adb reboot bootloader for a Mac use ./adb reboot bootloader
4) Make sure the bootloader screen has FASTBOOT (USB) between the date and the menu for Vol up and down etc
5) Then flash the stock recovery with fastboot flash recovery recovery.img for a Mac use ./fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
6) That should work fine and then you are back to stock with the exception of being rooted.
7) You can then either select Reboot in the menu or fastboot reboot on a Mac ./fastboot reboot
Of course that is assuming that the recovery.img from 1.29.980.17 is compatible with your Optus Phone and is located in the same folder as the adb and fastboot commands.
This is the way I do it to re-flash a recovery on mine between TWRP or CWM and the stock recovery.img ...
