Future Z1 User - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello People.
My cell phone provider is offering me in order to sign a new contract HTC ONE and Sony XPERIA Z1.
Allthough I have been using HTC for many years I think maybe its time to turn the page.
So I have to now are you happy with your Z1?
Any significant problems I should know about?
Also coming from HTC I have a thing for weather widget along with the clock is there anything similar in the Z1?
Finally is the screen any good or is it like most reviews report?
Thanks in advance for you help and feedback

Personally I love mine. It's amazingly fast, and I love taking it swimming
The screen is very sharp but viewing angles aren't great. That doesn't bother me 99% of the time though. The build quality is amazing and it feels awesome in your hands. My old S2 feels like a children's toy now.
The camera is good, but could be better considering the hype. I have little doubts that it is software related and have heard the new update launched yesterday in some places helps a lot.
Overall, I love this phone and am glad I didn't get anything else

From a Galaxy Nexus....?

I currently own a Galaxy Nexus, and I'm thinking about upgrading to the Xperia T (or TX rather, cheaper and available now in NY). I'm just trying to get some opinions on if this is a smart upgrade.
Biggest problem with my Nexus is the screen... its not great. I can deal with the lack of development on the Xperia T.... (more time for life without flashing roms)
Love the camera on the T... Galaxy Nexus not so much.. Xperia should also be better to hold in my hand...
Any opinions, thoughts? Should I stick with my Nexus?
I suggest upgrading!
Xperia T is incomparable faster phone, with great stability and very nice display (in sunlight readable).
And I know what I am saying, after one month of GN usage.
I actually like the Sony skin and it doesn't change too much so I don't care much about custom roms at this point.
I like the T a lot more, but that's up to you if you wanna upgrade
Sent from my Xperia T
I just bought my Xperia T tonight and already I like it way more than my HTC One X. I had the GN before the HOX and loved the GN for it's ease of flashing and modding. It was also comfortable in the hand but the screen and camera really let it down.
I think the XpT will be a great upgrade.
My vote? Go for it!
Can one of you guys please tell me if you can disable the battery percentage? It might be a dealbreaker for me, believe it or not.
The Xperia T has an LCD screen and the text on it are crisp and clear. It could stand to be a bit brighter but for battery conservation purposes I like to keep mine on 50% brightness so that really doesn't affect me all too much.
I think development on the Xperia T could rival that of the SIII but since the T's just come out and the SIII has been out for months now it's just going to take a little bit of time. The same can be said on the accessory front too!
As for OS Sony has promised Jelly Bean soon after launch but who knows when that will be, only that it will come eventually.
As for handling, the Xperia T feels very well made but if you are at all familiar with Sony products then you won't need any explanation. But the rubber matte back cover is indeed a nice touch. I was at first put off by the fake in store models since they felt way more rubbery but the real phone feels way more smooth. Like an expensive screwdriver's handle. Coming from a Nexus you probably prefer stock Android but Sony's skin is very light and non-intrusive, unlike Touchwiz, and the abundance of black makes it look much more elegant and mature. Rather suited towards a businessman than compared to say Sense or Touchwiz.
And if all that hasn't convinced you of the T then maybe James Bond will in the upcoming film, Skyfall. Who could argue with a secret agent with a license to kill?
Thank you for that detailed reply, I really do appreciate it! I love the look of this device, love the fact that it is a bit smaller (will feel better in my hands), and I've never had a Sony phone, so I'm looking forward to a change.
Can you tell me if you can disable the battery percentage in the status bar please?
Thanks

I looked everywhere but I cannot find an option to remove it.
I didn't see a way to remove the percentage on the stock ROM. CM10 has the option though I'm sure.

[Q] Buying The Xperia T - Any issues to have in mind?

Hello
A friend is looking to get a new phone and he doesn't want a big screen like you see now a days on phones like the galaxy s3/4 or other like that. His previous phone was a s2 and the screen size was ideal for him. So,since i can't find much phones with smaller screens and with at least a dual core processor on my carrier, i suggested the Xperia T because it seems to have a good camera and not a huge screen and he likes the phone.
However, i have been reading some complaints about battery life and i was wondering if it really is that bad and if there is anything else he should have in mind when buying it? Any bugs or negative aspects of the phone (but positive ones are welcomed also!) so just he knows what to expect from the phone or if he should look for other one instead.
Thanks
Sounds a bit like asking a girl a out for friend in the playground.
Why can't your friend ask the question himself?

Because he asked me to help me pick out a phone and he isn't familiar with xda and he doesn't use message boards to much, but since i do i thought i would ask here. I picked the xperia T because it seemed like it would fit all the requirements but wanted second opinions and to be sure before really recommend it and before he buys it.
Hope this answers your question and now hopefully someone will answer mine

Well Xperia T has 4.6 inch screen so if your friend doesn't like the big screens of the S3 (4.8 inch) then he probably won't want the T either!
I only suffer bad battery life when I've been using the Walkman app (and then media server seems to use loads of battery) and I fix that by killing all apps after using it with ES Task Manager.
Camera is epic and has got lots better with the Jelly Bean ROM.
I could go on but there are already plenty of threads about this - use the search facility!
Thanks for the reply.
The 4.55" screen was the smallest i found with still decent specs in my carrier and then the camera does seems great. My main concern was anything else besides the battery that could be an issue that i have missed while searching.
He liked the phone from what he saw from the specs and pictures, but we will go to a store to see the floor models because its always different than just look at the pictures.

Size was also a concern for me, coming from the 3'7 screen of an HTC Desire, and it was also one of the main reasons I picked the Xperia T: smaller screen compared to similar phones.
The only issues I've seen reported are a few who suffered the back peeling off, and a few with a dead phone after a few days. Those problems seem to have affected only a certain batch or batches that are no longer on sale, since those reports have faded away.
All in all, it is a nice phone, and I'm very satisfied with it.
EDIT: Oh, make sure your friend doesn't NEED a notification led, because that is a weak point.

Xperia Z compared to HTC One

Okay first off, I hate to start one of these threads, since it's basically an opinionated question. The GS4 is a no go for me, really don't like physical buttons. Currently looking for a gsm replacement on tmobile for my Galaxy Nexus. The only thing holding me back from getting the Xperia Z is the lack of a huge development community (and possibly reports of poor screen performance). Just curious if anyone who's used these devices could weigh in with their experience. I'd prefer to hear first hand accounts than continue to read expert reviews.
Thanks everyone!
Also, mods if this kind of post isn't allowed on xda anymore, my apologies, please remove it.

I went from a Galaxy Nexus to a Nexus 4, then had the same decision as you.
In terms of screen, the HTC One's has better viewing angles, no doubt about it, so does the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. In actual usage, on the latest firmware that improves blacks, it doesn't really matter that much. When actually looking at images, I compared the screens side by side and the Xperia Z seems to have a sharpness or vibrancy that the HTC One's doesnt. I really think the reviews overcook the view angle issue, it nearly put me off.
If you're used to the on screen buttons of AOSP, then I think the HTC one would be really irritating. That was a major factor for me, the quick swipe up from the middle launch of google now is also retained on the Xperia Z.
I found the HTC One difficult to hold, the edges seemed really sharp and hard, and the phone was quite slippery. At the same time the Xperia Z is also quite uncomfortable, but it doesn't feel like it is going to slide out of your hand. The power button placement is also much better on the Xperia Z.
The speaker is definitely much better on the HTC One, that said, the Nexus 4 is much better than the Galaxy Nexus, and the Xperia Z's speaker sounds better than the Nexus 4. So the Xperia Z isn't bad. I hold my phone with my left hand so it doesn't block the speaker, but if you hold your phone with your right hand and play music, then you will muffle the speaker.
I'm sure the HTC One is slightly faster due to newer processor but I don't think this matters that much, both will be fast.
I disliked sense 5 coming from AOSP, hated not being able to remove blink feed (find it really frustrating even though you can move it to a different home screen). The Sony customisations are actually an improvement on AOSP, things which frustrate me are fixed and also there are some other nice additions like location based wifi, bravia engine, wifi syncing with media go. The Sony Gallery called Albums is much much better than AOSP, the Walkman app is really good as is the Movies app. I never used built in apps before but I do here, I haven't installed MX Player.
The better camera in good light is undoubtedly the Xperia Z. I'm an amateur photographer (although street photographer so not much of a pixel peeper) and I'm impressed with the Xperia Z. Again the Nexus 4 is a step up from the Galaxy Nexus and the Xperia Z is much better. I haven't taken many pictures low light but I won't argue that the HTC One will provide better photos, the HTC also takes better videos and has Zoe which is cool (was one of the reasons the HTC One was attractive to me). Front camera is better on the Xperia Z than either the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 4, the HTC One's is wider than the Z's if that matters to you.
The battery life I've been seeing has been pretty good, eg, if you're playing an mp4 film, I was seeing about 25% drop for 2 hours of watching the film. It's much better than the Nexus 4 which is a bit better than the Galaxy Nexus. Apparently the HTC One has a better battery life, I've never tested it though.
The Xperia Z has Micro SD slot which is great for music and films, I missed that owning the recent Nexus phones.
The last major point is the Xperia Z is water resistant, which is priceless, not because I want to take it under water but because it's nice having a life proof phone that you don't have to worry touching when you have wet hands or worried that rain will get into etc. It's a relaxing phone to own.
I only got the phone last weekend, the HTC One was the same price and I'm very happy with the phone and that I made the right choice for me.
Well thanks for that really in depth review. The more I think about it, the more I really want the Xperia. The water resistance factor hit me today while missing several calls walking through a downpour. I'm sure no matter what I end up getting, it will still be a step up from the gnex (which isn't actually in need of replacing, I'd just like something new). Hopefully T-Mobile releases the phone soon as the leaks suggest. I think I'd rather pay monthly for it than fork over the 500+ now. Thanks again

The best you could do is to actually go to a shop and play with those two phones for some time and then decide.

I expect the development community that it will continue to develop and grow larger with more mods.
This is one good things about the Z.
The screen on my Xperia Z is completely fine and I don't notice any problems with it

Agree completely with uberlaggydarwin.
Fact is, compared to most (non-Nexus perhaps) phones. Much more actual development gets done such as actual "fixes" for problems and not just hacky workarounds. We still have a way to go towards complete AOSP, theres one or two driver blobs still required for example, and a few minor bugs. But with (almost) every day that passes there are new platform-specific patches submitted to the CyanogenMod device repo on github and if I'm reading them correctly we have already, or will very soon, have a blob-less driver powering WiFi.
I must say, coming from a non-Nexus device it is a relief to see this much actual development and not just WinZip-wielding 10yr olds mashing together ROMs with 10,000 unnecessary hacks that make them laggy and/or unstable.
...a little torn on the screen though. As everyone is saying it is beautiful to look at from the front and probably (from this angle) the best mobile screen I have used, but again, as mentioned, the viewing angles are sub-optimal.
Too add my egg to the basket... I too am coming from a Gnex, which i loved. Been owning the XZ for roughly 3 months now. The screen angle thingy is definitely exaggerated. The colours and the viewing angles will take some getting used to, coming from an amoled screen, but the sharpness and clarity definitely make the transition much more pleasant.
The camera is undoubtedly much much better then on the Gnex, which was my only gripe with it. As to the HTC, I would wager the XZ one better for my taste, but thats only based on reviews, no hands on :/
The battery life has been stable enough for me, for my use... they both lasted about 2 days, Gnex maybe a bit better, HTC again cannot comment.
As far as the build quality... there have been some issues if u read the forms and from my case - the flap on the charging port doesn't wanna stay closed anymore In this case I would say HTC is better. It also prefers on your design preferences.
For me, leaving my Gnex behind for the XZ was actually not that hard of a step. U will have to get used to less development as compared to the nexus devices but that doesn't mean there isn't any. Free xperia team are awesome and CM is coming along nicely and with it a whole bunch of other roms, from PAC, PA, AOKP and independent AOSP projects, so no fear there
In any case, ull get a wonderfull new phone, whichever u choose and I hope u enjoy it!
I guess in terms of development, I definitely prefer actual dev work over tons of roms that are almost the same. Out of curiosity, any soft key mods yet? I have mine set to RECENTS HOME BACK and having been like this for almost 2 years I'd rather not have to relearn default (honestly minor issue I'm just being picky).
I would love to go to the store and compare them as someone has said, but I can't find anywhere local that sells the Xperia Z.

Even since the update the screen on the z has been great and really great to see in bright sunlight how I noticed today using it in sunlight yeah Germany didn't had the best weather as of late lol anyway I also don't think the viewing angle are a huge deal. I still see just fine what is on the display and actually Sony here in Berlin told me that the viewing angle is extra made a little darker so not everyone just can look and see stuff that easy on the screen if u don't want them too. Even so I think the viewing angle o's fine. Never had any issues seeing anything. Battery has been great as long as not being used with mobile data. All phones seem to get sucked dry in no time using Mobile data. At home with WiFi I can easily get 2 days.

Any idea what kind of battery life you guys get with mobile data enabled? I currently get about 16 hours with 2.5ish hours of screen on time with my gnex.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 4 Beta
With my Gnex I get about the same as you. 2,5-3 hours of screen on time per day on auto-brightness. With my Xperia Z I can get 4-5 hours of screen time per day, depending on brightness (0%) and usage. With auto-brightness I get like 3 hours per day. But with light usage I can easily make it trough 2 days with my Z. My Gnex never lasts that long, even when I almost don't use it.

XZ and HTC one is neck and neck for me, I dont like sense one bit, havent touch the device but i had prior HTC devices and I can tell ya sense really suck other wise i think the HTC one won in every aspect. if you looking to go CM10.1 then i would go HTC one if you looking to stay stock i would choose XZ.
P.S I dont like the physical key either damn samsung for starting that in the S3
I am kind of new to android, and just got my Z. But one thing i can say is: Phoning while showering is so chilled.
Why haven't I thought of this?! You're a genius mate, gonna do that tonight! Lols

Battery life on data is not that good actually. Well I would say when listening music. Somehow the mediaserver always comes with on and even after turning off music it still drains the battery. Just a reboot fixes that. Listen barely to music on the phone anymore.

I'm having a blast with my Xperia Z.
Lots of fantastic ROMS in development...
Never noticed anything with regards to "viewing angles" i'm one of these freaks that tends to look at my phone head on.
With my own custom setup and settings i'm getting a full days use out of my phone.
I'm getting a whole day's battery life with heavy usage. Internet, Web, Whatsapp, Youtube, Camera etc.
Some people submerse their phones and have no problem, but i'm happy jsut treating my phone as resistant not proof.
I can reply to text messages in the bath with wet hands etc.
Build quality is fantastic. The best out at the minute i feel. Feels like a slab of glass! :fingers-crossed:
If you get one, buy a dock straight away, saves wear and tear on your charging ports.flaps.

i had the G2 and there were many things that i really loved about the phone and there were a few things that i hated. i have switched to the z1 and i love it. the g2 without a doubt had better battery life. i dont turn my screen higher than 40% and i usually lock it to 3g and use wifi at work and at home, so this really helped battery life, but using both phones the same way the g2 was at least 20% better for me. the camera took really good pictures, maybe slightly better than the z1 but it was very slow to lock focus in. the screen was also a bit bigger and better in my opinion.
what i didnt like about the g2 was the lag in the sms app, facebook, or most things that required scrolling. it was very frustrating for me as it killed the everyday experience. even opening the sms app had a long delay. the phone always felt slimy and while the knock on feature works great some of the time, there were many times when it didnt work and this became frustrating. i do think that the g2 will be really good after a firmware update to fix some of these bugs and a slim case would really help with the feel. the last thing that was a deal breaker for me was that every g2 i tried had a creak in the back case, right under the volume down key. just picking up the phone i could feel and hear creaks from the same spot. i actually had two of g2 units. bought a rogers unit without contract at full price and took it back after a few days (had the creak) and then bought a bell unit on kijiji for a good deal and it had the same creak.
the z1 feels much more premium in the hand, which was something i was looking for. the overall operation is much smoother, faster, stable in my experience. i had a rogers z1 for a few days and i found it getting a bit warm quite often, and the battery life stunk (even after doing a software update that was available right after first boot). i took it back and exchanged it for another one and battery life has been much better and the phone does not run as warm. the camera is very fast and after the update takes pretty good shots too.
at the end of the day, it really depends on what you value more. if you strictly need the best battery life, get the g2. if you want a well built and styled device, get the z1.
Thanks for all the info. I was wondering why you have to turn the z1 on 3g and the screen down that much is the battery that bad? I used the g2 for a day and a half with lte on and had no problem. I am definitely looking forward to the feel and build quality of the z1 but if the battery is bad enough that I would have to disable lte them I'm going to have to sell or return it
I use all my phones like that. I would rather extend the Battery life then have screen cranked up and 3g is fast enough for me. I can always switch to lte if I need to download lots of info.
3g on the z1 is actually very fast. I have not done a speed test to measure but I have owned the majority of high end android devices over the years and this feels very fast

HTC One, G2 or Z1 ?

Hi everybody, excuse my english i'm french
So, i will buy a new smartphone, but i CAN'T decide between these phone, it's hard. I've a basic usage, i use my phone for SMS/call/twitter/facebook/(few) games/musique (with earphone)/(few) photos, and that's all I search a beautiful interface, because I HATE Android stock, it's very empty. So i search a beautiful interface with good features, i also search a very fast phone, and that's all because these 3 phone have an amazing screen/performance etc.
I like the HTC One because i think Sense is good, and i can't stay for the new HTC, but the One will have Sense 6.0 (with ROM custom) ? And the One is old..
I like the G2 for his screen, and his is new
And the Z1 for his camera
So thank you if you could help me, i've 800$ so i can buy any phone, thank you !

Pro and cons are allowed in one thread. but for comparisons between 2 or 3 phones, people will take this to serious and it will go out of hand fast. And anyway he put this in an HTC One forum why would take about how awesome another phone is because most of us don't have both phones anyway. But to answer the op the HTC One is the best!!!!
I have M7 and 'had' Z1, just recently sold it due to a few factors such as weight, poor screen viewing angles, ridiculous button placement, limited dev support and extremely average camera in low to medium light conditions. I cant say much about the G2 other than imo its fairly ugly looking.

It is just a little funny that we are alloud to compare eg. the camera of two phones, but to compare two phones is not...
Never mind...
I actually have both phones in the house, and have used the Z1 for two months as my own before i bought the ONE...
- and this is my thoughts on the subject...
Camera:
The Auto feature (point and shoot) of the Z1 is NOT working at all...
The manual function is working, but i think that most of us use auto function anyway...
A Little plus is that Z1 have a deticated camera button.
On the ONE, the auto "point and shoot" function works really great, but in this phone you really have to remember that it is only a 4mp camera nomatter that HTC try to call them ultra pixels...
Sony have at least the option to make a great camera down the line, as they at least have put in the hardware for it inside the phone...
Daily feel:
The Z1 is really fantastic pice of electronics, the glass/alu feel is really nice...
The viewing angle is not amazing, but i mostly use the phone when i look at it anyway, so that is NOT a real problem unless you really need to share your life at any moment with the World arround you, and then you could just turn your phone over to your friend anyway...
The edges arround the Z1 screen is simply much too wide thoug, with no function at all, just a lot of Black (or White or purple)...
Back and home is even onscreen, and not on the edge...
The water proof feature is really nice to have thoug, just wash the phone if it get dirty...
The processor in the Z1 feels supperior to the HTC by a lot, it feels like it have the power to do anything you want...
The ONE on the other hand is alu/plastic, and feels a little cheaper i think, but really nice compared to most phones anyway...
The ONE have a smaller size due to a Little smaller screen and much smaller edges, and it feels better in the hand when you hold it and use it...
- the Z1 is actually a little too big to type on or use it with one hand, and i have no small hands...
The edges on the ONE is much smaller arround the screen and i love that...
But the processor in the ONE actually feels less powerfull... you can actually feel it in daily use...
Sense or Xperia, i can´t really see the differense...
- both works fine, but the Xperia is perhaps a little closer to the pure Android feeling...
I have both in the house as i mentioned, and i have used both as my daily phone, but...
I would proberbly get the Z1 again (don´t hate me HTC ONE forum), but only IF the Z1 had a dual sim feature like my HTC ONE variant...
- i love the dual sim feature in my ONE variant, and THAT is the only reason i bought this phone!
Thank you very much, i've tested the Z1 in a store just 30 seconds, and i was REALLY blufed by the smooth of the phone, it's incredible, the G2 and the One aren't available for testing.. I don't open a game or other, just open the browser (Google Chrome) and scroll into the homescreen, this is very fast, so i think i will buy this phone, but i love Sense and i don't want wait 3 months for the new HTC.. The G2 is not very beautiful, so i pass on this phone. The Z1 have many problems (reviews from buyers), so, it's better i go on the HTC One who is a great value or the Z1 ? If i buy the One, will i have Sense 6.0 with ROM Cutom or Official updates ? Thank you all
Before this thread gets closed. Check out the Xperia Z1S. Newer, better and an IPS screen. Completely waterproof certified too (for 30 minutes). It comes to the US on January 22nd, and I'm completely on the fence on whether to stick with my One or get that.
