After using photonic geek's method to root my device and installing wondershare Mobile per instructions from stevan588 I installed Es File explorer.
I sent the sounds I wanted to the Gear using wondershare and place them in folder called gear (Folder doesn't matter)
Then I went into settings clicked ringtone and was given the option to select a new sound using Es File explorer.
I Selected my new sound and now Knight Rider plays

If you can install es file explorer without being rooted. You shouldn't have a problem doing this.

Thanks for info. Rooted all my phones in the past but tired of dealing with update nightly files and issues that sometimes rooting brings out. May just download es file apk to Gear and see if able to select a different ringtone.

Let me know how this works for you. Just realized I don't have a single micro USB 2.0 cable in the house to connect my gear to my pc. The ones that came with it is only A/C. And all my new cables are 3.0. Not sure if micro is more fragile but I have had 3 micro USB 2.0 cables fail in the past year including the one that came with my note 2.
Success, no need to root.
Download free version es file to Gear.
Connect Gear to PC and open MobileMe software.
Drop wanted ringtones to Gear folder called ringtones.
Unplug Gear and reboot.
Go to settings-sound-ringtones.
Your new ringtones added should be there to select now.

hi ,
its not called ..MobileME ..??( re: windows o/s )
but....Wondershare MobileGo for Android !!
(and you dont need no root as stated originally..!!)
Just Google for it free 14 days trail version ,download install ,connect Gear to , usb on pc( make sure USB debug, in Settings on Gear is enable
..if you do not know or see it ask .)
Wondershare ..will install drivers for gear etc etc
look on left /down on Wondershare screen ,you will see" files " click on it
then either click on ringtones /notifications /alarms
copy and paste from pc directly into Gear....etc .
Reboot gear go to settings on Gear and select ..Sound
ringtones or /notification
you will be given option/complete action , to go to es file explorer or media storage ..
i choose media storage ( system app )
if you did not reboot you might not see your
personalised ringtones etc ..so reboot and it will /should appear
good luck !
post note
if you look on top left of wondershare screen ,
you will see that you can acess Google play market directly by clicking on it
( plse note ,free apps, only you can download )
and must have a internet connection of course ! )
Tip..do not sign into play store but acess the app directly and click install ,
app will be downloaded to wondershare and installed directly onto Gear.
Just use adb.exe from the Android SDK. It's free and easy.
adb push my_sound /sdcard/ringtones/

The version attached below will play in HQ by default.
Install through adb:
Code:
adb remount
adb push YouTube.apk /system/app
adb reboot
Install through Astro, or similar:
Code:
Place the file on your sdcard
Open Astro
Find YouTube.apk on your sdcard -> Click & Hold it -> Edit -> Move
Go to /system/app directory
Menu -> Edit -> Paste
Reboot your device
Enjoy!

not sure what I did wrong but I couldn't get this to work. I didn't do ab method cause I rarely have access to a computer. did astro way and it wouldn't allow me to paste on system / app. I used Linda and that allowed me to copy / paste. I rebooted and tried YouTube but got same ole normal quality. I took a a look back at system / app and saw that YouTube apk was indeed there and it was. LOL this seems so simple and really isn't a huge deal but would be really nice for me to get this to work

Go with the ADB method, it'll work. Make sure you push, not install, install will fail with a message to the effect of same version already installed.

If using astro or any other file manager you have to turn on the root settings. Also setup the SU and then mount the system via the app. I use ES File Explorer. Works great, in sure.

I did it with root explorer but when I rebooted the App was missing all together. Not listed in app drawer. I will give adb a shot but my adb drivers are all jacked.

OK - rookie here - how do you install a .apk - I've downloaded one to my computer but don't know the next steps. The manual is silent and I think this is such a basic question that search on the forum didn't help.
Too bad there wasn't a basic FAQ for us newbies.
Thanks.

Connect your phone to your computer, drag the apk to your phone, use a file explorer on your phone (estrong) etc, to find the file on your SD card, click on it and it will give you an option to install it

Requires Root
Requires ADB
Requires USB Debugging to be enabled
Make sure you backup!
APPS AND PROGRAMS (WINDOWS):
Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480429
Install Google Play Apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477702
Google Play apps needed:
- SuperSU or SuperUser
- Busybox
ADB File Explorer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772338
DOWNLOAD:
Modded camera: AMII firmware (original apk is in Restore folder)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Root your device
2. Install SuperSU or SuperUser and Busybox via Wondershare MobileGo
3. Use Droid Manager (Start Device Manager -> File Manager) and browse to /system/media/audio/ui
4. Create a new folder (Right click -> New -> New Folder)
5. Right click any sound file (you can ctrl+select multiple files) you do not want and select Move -> Move
6. Go into the folder you created and right click -> Move -> Paste
7. Open Windows explorer and copy apk
8. Paste into /sdcard/download
9. Move into /system/app (it will overwrite with no warning)
Note: keep an eye on the watch as it will popup a few times with messages (eg. grant root, grant adb access)
Media files to delete/rename/move (/system/media/audio/ui):
Auto_focus.ogg
Cam_Start.ogg
Cam_Stop.ogg
Shutter.ogg
I tried to make it as easy as I could for all of you
Alternatively, you can use root explorer and Google keyboard to move/rename/delete on your watch itself
Alternative Solutions:
- Hold finger over speaker

Hello all,
I have been creeping these forums for quite some time, but this will be my first post since I can't seem to get sideloading to work on my Galaxy Gear.
First of all, it was very hard to find the apk file i wanted (fat finger calculator), so I settled with an apk file for a calculator another helpful member developed himself. It was very easy to download, compared to other popular free apps. I don't understand why people can't upload the apks of other apps just liek he did.
I went through the steps to be able to sideload, but immediately hit a snag because my gear didnt have the usb debug option. I managed to find a solution by tapping my version number seven times (?). Everywhere else I didn't see people having this problem, or describing it in how to guides, very strange indeed..
Sideloading apps to the gear is described as "very easy", but as I finally got to the step to sideload the apk file in cmd after the above procedures I get an error that nobody has brought up as a potential problem, nor a fix for it. Hence this post.
I use the command: adb install C:\Users\SP Gaming I\Desktop\samsung\calculator.apk
and I get the error: too many files specified; only takes APK file and verifier file
Sideloading isnt as easy as it is described in countless sources, and there isn't a good, accessible step by step guide. Not that I could find anyway. I dont want to use any third party applications, and would really like to sideload through cmd and adb.
Can someone help me with this last obstacle i ran into? I can't find any information on what I am doing wrong. The app should be able to install with this command, no? I have the drivers and ADB. What am I doing wrong?
I really need a simple calculator on my gear, it would be so nifty in my everyday work/life. Please someone, help me!
-edit lol, before posting this, I wanted to try to install it from a simpler path: c:\calculator.apk
this actually did the trick and I managed to install the app! however, maybe someone will have use for my post since I encountered so mnay snags..
It is not easy....it is EXTREMELY easy. If you are running Null rom just use usb cable tu put the apk on you gear and then with any file manager install. Or I have also used the Google Play store on my PC and sent it directly to my Gear.
Do you have gapps?
Are you running null?

For the uninitiated, you are jumping over a few steps that may seem easy and obvious to you, but not for the first timer. Did you read my thread?
First of all, how would one get a hold of the apk file one would need for the installation process? All links i can find routes me to the google play store. If i press install there, it asks me which device I want it on, and can only find my mobile phones in that drop down list. It doesn't give me a raw .apk file. After some googling there seem to be some plugin for chrome to do it, but I run Firefox and I don't want to install chrome on my machines for various reasons. ALso by looking on the guide to fetch the apk with that plugin, it doesnt seem as easy as using any other plugin, I have to input my device id and things like that. Atleast a few steps only there to get the desired apk file downloaded.
I want to quote you again: "It is not easy....it is EXTREMELY easy. If you are running Null rom just use usb cable tu put the apk on you gear and then with any file manager install. Or I have also used the Google Play store on my PC and sent it directly to my Gear."
Oh lawdy, if it was this easy I would have had my calculator on my gear one hour ago, the moment I started researching if I could get a calculator. "Just use USB cable". On you it sounds like it would find the apk, download it, install it on my gear, all this automatically, only by plugging my gear into my computer with an USB cable. Maybe you missed that I didn't even have the USB debug option under "more info", under settings. Nowhere I read initially, it said that I had to go to dev mode by tapping my version number 7 times in order to get the USB debug option.
Maybe by judging by my first post and the process I had while doing this "extremely" easy thing, you would notice that I am a very novice user when it comes to these things. I am sorry if I upset you by reaching out for help. Get real man.
Easiest method that I have been using is Wonder share on a PC. My computer recognized my Note 3 and installed drivers before this. To get APPS I put on phone using app store, then Export to PC folder, then Install to Gear. with both look up by USB is very fast and easy to get from the phone to the gear you can also load music files and movies this way and put programs on your gear like the Apollo player or mX Video Player I'm able to watch movies and podcast on the gear this way and listen to music that is on the gear.

The reason is that your path has spaces in it. Command line tools treat spaces as delimiters between arguments. In other words, It thinks you want to adb install "C:\Users\SP", "Gaming", and "I\Desktop\samsung\calculator.apk". The fix for this is, like you did, either move it to another directory, or (even easier) simply put quotes around the file name. So, your full command would be
adb install "C:\Users\SP Gaming I\Desktop\samsung\calculator.apk"
As a tip for command line stuff in the future, do this.
cd "C:\Users\SP Gaming I\Desktop\samsung"
adb install calculator.apk
You can also use the Tab key to autocomplete file names when in cmd.exe on Windows, which will auto-add the quotes if they are needed.
As you mentioned in your other post, acquiring APK files in the first place isn't immediately obvious. You can use:
http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/
and just paste the Google Play link in and download, even without the extension. However, once set up, the Chrome extension is extremely easy to use; just click the button and you're done. If you really really don't want to install Chrome for your untold reasons, you can always set up a virtual machine, or use a program like Sandboxie to make sure it doesn't touch the rest of your system.
It does seem odd that none of the guides say that you had to hit the version number 7 times; that's actually been a part of Android since 4.2. All USB Debugging options are disabled until you do that, on any device.

If you're on stock, then I think that enabling usb debugging under settings->gear info can allow for usb transfer of files.

Hello, I am running an ATT S5 and although there is the bloat were drive mode app I am looking for the stock car mode app and was hoping someone could upload the required APK for me as I cannot find it anywhere. Many thanks.
Edit: The S voice APK would also be most helpful.

I had previously found the S voice APK on Google, they never worked, always CTD on start, just had the idea to make it a system app and it worked so happy, happy. 2nd I am not looking for the AT&T app I want the Samsung car mode app, which is not on the playstore and I assume is hidden on the Galaxy store like the S voice app.

Install a launcher, Nova or Apex both work. Add a shortcut (system shortcut not apps) choose a setting short cut and look for Drive Mode. It also gives you the option to use Download Booster. Which AT&T has removed.
The drive mode is present in your phone, its only hidden cuz they want you to use their AT&T drive mode. Samsung one still exists! Hope this helps.
Are you running an S5, I am using a custom rom for my 900A, it lacks this function though even the nandroid backup lacks the required apk

Okay, here are the files from the /system/ directory of my own S5. Mine is the Sprint variant, however I'm confident that they're the same...
You CAN NOT flash this .zip in recovery, you must extract the contents and copy to the appropriate directories in the system partition.
Remember after you put them there, you must change the permissions for the folders and the files:
__________/rwxr-xr-x/ rw--r--r
/system/app/DriveLink/DriveLink.apk
________________________________
__________/___rwxr-xr-x___/ rw--r--r
/system/app/DriveLinkRemote/DriveLinkRemote.apk
___________________________________________
______/______/----------rwxr-xr-x----------/-----rw--r--r
system/priv-app/S-Voice_Android_phone/S-Voice_Android_phone.apk

Hope this helps someone... =3

No, you dont do that....
you do exactly what i explained....
download the .zip,
extract the contents to SD Card, (or ANY Download folder),
Once extracted, you will have simple directory, starting with "system/",
[ Now, you simply go thru the folders, and copy them from where you extracted them and paste into same folders in your phonephone's "system/" partition....]
Basically;
if you copy it from /system/app/DriveLink/DriveLink.apk on your SD Card,
Then you paste it to /system/app/DriveLink/DriveLink.apk on your phone...
Change permissions as i indicated earlier, as you copy each one,
When all are done, reboot. ..
[While booting back up a message will say something like
"Optimizing Application 1 of 3..."
thats a good sign that you did it right. ...]

Hi, thanks for the explanation, but I'm really new at this, and I need this application.
I do not understand, "Change permissions as I indicated earlier, as each copy"
that you mean this?, the only thing I see is that button "r-w and r-o" or you mean super user permissions?
------------read---------write---------execute
---owner--x-------------- x--------------
----group--x--------------x-------------
----Other--x------------- x------------
----set uid-----------set gid-------r sticky
hello ... when given permission to DriveLink, and drivelinkremote,
at 2 give them permission, but I did this to see if this well in owner, group, others, check all run.
restart, and indeed was installed when lit, but when I want to open, do not find in menu, and the car mode toggle of the active,
I get that you can not open out "car stopped mode"
Do you mean that the app is force-closing when it tries to open after toggling the 'car mode' quicksetting?

okay, hopefully this will answer any questions you have had or would have had...
I know its a little messy, but bear with me, I've never done a Screen Recording before...
Just read the instructions i posted above, watch the videos, and if you still dont get it, read and watch again...
remember to put things in the same folder paths you pull the from (the main difference between the two videos), etc...
Once all are done, reboot....
