Smooth, curved edges of front glass gone? - Nexus 5 General

Judging by the recently leaked press shots it appears as if the smooth curve of the side edges of glass as found on the Nexus 4 is gone.
The face seems perfectly flat with an equal edge all around.
Personally I liked how easy it was to sideswipe across those smooth edges.
Going back to a flat face seems somewhat backwards...

You're kidding right? Why in the hell did you need to start a new thread for this? This place is riddled with useless points we don't need useless threads to be added. Its getting so tiring....

There really aren't many threads in this section, and I don't consider this one useless because he raises a good point. It may have been discussed in another thread, but some of them are over a hundred pages long...

Yea to be fair I don't remember seeing this topic brought up much in any of the threads and I have read them all.

It's actually a good question N4 edges are REALLY smooth and I hope N5 will feature the same!

the thing is the phone is not even out so there really isnt anything to compare because we dont know how its going to feel in hand. its just gonna be a thread of how people want the nexus feel, which we already have a thread for. these threads need to be held of til more info is actually released from Google and reviewers is all im saying.

Looks like it's gone indeed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg6IFhOBpq0
Maybe it was too difficult/expensive to manufacture? The LG G2 also looks like it has a normal flat screen, as far as i remember.

Maybe something to do with the new gorilla glass 3 being present (if this is true).
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

May have something to do with the practical. How many people knocked the nexus 4 for having a glass back and screen that easily cracks? A screen that slopes of at the edges is more likely hit glass if it falls. So they got rid of the glass back and better protect the screen. Just a thought.
But I think manufacturing costs probably are the biggest driver in nexus devices.

I'm going to contribute to the clueless guessing game and add that it's probably gone due to the very narrow bezel design. I prefer a larger screen in a smaller case.

I also wonder if gorilla glass 3 is used on the n5, not like fragile one used on the n4. And I do hope the curved edges are gone. It was impossible to keep a screen protector on with those curved edges, specially with a case.

Gorilla Glass 2 Warning

Just a heads up to anyone out there relying on Gorilla Glass 2, I don't think it is as effective as the original gorilla glass at resisting scratches. I once took keys and knives to the screen of one of my old Sensations that I was about to send in for a warranty replacement to see if it would scratch, and it didn't at all, and I used the phone completely normally for months and sold it without even a nick on the display.
My Nexus 4 screen has already scratched in some places. It's very minor, and not noticeable with the screen on, but they occasionally catch light. It's getting replaced anyway for a defect, so I don't care that much, but I'm definitely going to get a screen protector on the replacement one. I thought I wouldn't have to get any of those anymore, and it sucks because I really prefer the feel of a naked screen, but it looks like I can't take the chance. It's not like I haven't babied the phone, it's maybe grazed my keyring a couple of times, but nothing the old gorilla glass couldn't handle. I noticed my mother's GSIII with gorilla glass 2 also has some scratches in it.
Just a heads up, might want to get this one protected if you were thinking of not protecting it because it had gorilla glass. :silly:
Because the other 10 threads with the same vague information weren't enough to post this in.

Yeah seriously just stop with the duplicate threads... Can a mod please close this?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
There's only one other thread on this, and it was pages back. Sorry, I don't go digging pages back before every thread I start. If you really feel the need to have this thread closed, there's a report button you can use without being rude
Plus, I don't see the mods closing the 10 duplicate threads on the 4.2.1 update or the duplicate limbo threads. Don't you have something better to contribute than troll report posts when you could just hit the report button?
Now I remember why I stopped coming on XDA when I had my Sensation
Take out your knifes, keys, pitchforks etc and try and scratch the glass. You will not succeed.
People give you crap not just because of the other threads. But because it is common knowledge. A softer substance simply can not scratch a harder one. All the gorilla glass my butt etc post just = facepalm.
Glass is glass no matter what prefix it has.
/thread
Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that softer substances cannot scratch harder substances, and that is the exact point of these threads, to point out the new gorilla glass is softer than the old gorilla glass and it should be taken special care of. This phone, under the same conditions my Sensation was under for months has already received micro scratches, and I have read similar complaints about the GSIII on other forums. It's an important issue to cover, certainly more than "OMG I JUST GOT MY SHIPPING NOTIFICATION!!!"
It's a point of discussion, whether or not all devices are weaker like this, or if it's just a certain serial range, or what else. I have heard some cases of people dropping phones into sand and not receiving a single mark.
To counter the glass is glass argument, a lot of new screen protectors are made out of near-scratchproof tempered glass
Not all glass is made equal!
There is not any anti scratch .. As the name tell us its scratch resistance . gorilla is no exception . will be scratch as time pass ! U see video on internet screen scratching by key but there not any scratch on screen and wr say woow . that poor guy will have scratched screen 4 time sooner that person didnt do it on his phone .
As time pass screen becomw weaker . i test this on my 4 previous phone and i can tell it .

Beware - WEAK Gorilla Glass! Scratches out of nowhere

Nexus 4 is super weak.

I own 4 nexus 4's two are replacement orders that I kept from google. If you squeeze in the bottom left corner it creaks and sounds broken. Pretty much all along the bottom if you squeeze it creaks. Now I don't have the time to order 4 replacements like some of you I just chalk it up to this being a nice cheap phone.
Never have I owned a phone so fragile and prone to scratches. If you use this without a front and back screen protector and a case your nuts. Maybe you like living life on the edge I don't know. This glass is whatever it is (not gorilla) it just sucks. LG we are not impressed and nobody wants your phones just stop it.
When I got my first two I was afraid to even take it outside without a case I mean what if a grain of sand was in my pocket and caused a scratch could not risk it. So I used it in the house only still got scratched maybe I left the AC on I don't know.
Now before you close my thread hear me out I'm not trolling I bought four of these and I like it mostly. Now I know why i don't want a 350 dollar phone that will break. Google got me with the nexus 7 that way and that cracked on carpet I swear to god. GOOGLE PLEASE STOP MAKING CHEAP PREMIUM PRODUCTS. I went through more than I have ever for a phone to get 4 of these.
And last the LCD is not good, yeah sure its ok but amoled any day over this. Colors are washed even after adjustment, custom kernel and a 5 dollar app. Viewing angles, stop it. Of all top phones this is the worst to me. IPhone and HTC one x way better oh and s3 too. LCD hurts my eyes for some unknown reason, was actually happy my screen protector blurred the screen a little.
Not trolling this is how I feel, I think the iPhone 5 is a beautiful and superior quality phone. I don't care for iOS all I want is somebody on stock android to do the same. So far it has never happened and I have been waiting years. So far galaxy nexus was best attempt just the hardware specs were kinda sub par.

I don't have a problem at all using it without a case and the screen protectors I use have no scratches on them. That means that if you are careful you won't have to worry about anything. I understand that the sand in your pockets might be a problem and the solution to that would be to clean them before you use them.

ive experienced the nexus 4 to be quite solid. dropped the phone 3 times on the ground (asphalt) and the only damage it took was to the frontcase on the screen.. the glass back and front was undamaged

Your phone probably already has a ton on little scratches on it I don't believe how your phone could be flawless. And what's worse when you crack it and you most likely will the cost to replace the screen is retarded. An iPhone is only a 30 bucks to replace the digitizer. Not only that when you crack this one the whole screen stops working.
My gal nex dropped many times and screen is flawless. I'm not buying people telling me this is gorilla glass I don't believe it.

what's the point in this thread? its based on how you feel which sounds like you are going to troll.
why buy 4 nexus phones knowing you weren't going to be happy?
you claim iphone5 is better, that's your preference.
why state iphone5 is better when we don't care what you think, let users think for themselves,
you obviously not satisfied with the nexus experience so go somewhere you feel comfortable in.
my nexus 4 is mint, great screen and its worth it,
Valuable opinion, but this thread has to be closed.

Found one negative about the N4s screen!

I'm a little sick right now. On accident I slid my phone on its screen on a very smooth table and I now have scratches everywhere. All on the corners and a ton on the bottom by the touch buttons. At least the good thing is you can't see it unless in the light. But its pretty obvious. And of course I have slight OCD so this is bothering the **** out of me lol. They almost look like big scuffs all over.
Edit**: I just wanted to update you guys and say that now that I've gotten used to it its not so bad. Yes it still bothers me a lot but the good thing is you can't see them unless under a light or outside. So on usual use you can't see them.
Also to all the idiots who think I'm stupid or something. 1. Yes I do know gorilla glass scratches easier 2. Do you idiots really think I just slide my phones around on their screens on purpose or something?? Its called an accident 3. Stop jumping to conclusion saying how stupid this thread is, it was mainly for the people just getting their nexus 4s and telling them to be careful with the screen so they dont make my mistakes.

Most if not ALL surfaces have some form of dust/sand particles on it. Sand scratches glass no matter how "tough" it claims to be!
/end of thread
Gorilla glass 2 just means it's a thinner protective layer compared to the last generation, not twice (2) as thick nor protective.
Sorry to hear bud. At least you didn't claim they came from "nowhere" like half the other threads like this one. Props to you sir.

Just a side note, apparently Sand is tough enough to grind down granite. This is because of small but tough grain in sand (sand has several components to it).

I'm pretty sure that most of the ppl here knows that Gorilla Glass, no matter what version, isn't scratch proof.
That isn't really a negative for the N4. You basically let your phone's screen nakedly rub against a surface (very smooth or not). Do it with any phone and you'll probably get the same results.

i learned that lesson with my scratched (gorilla glass) asus transformer.
on my n4 now i have a screen protector on the front and a slim hard shell on the back, with a slight lip that keeps the front screen above surfaces if placed on its front. I've also drilled a couple of mounting holes in the case for a wrist strap.
belt + braces!
delete.
Flat glass against flat glass is a formula for disaster. With no air between the two surfaces, the smallest imperfections like dust will scratch the hell out of your screen.
I have this on my galaxy s3 and my galaxy nexus, when I sell it on eBay I'll be letting people know about it but I feel they won't understand just how small the scratches are.
For my nexus 4 I've already got a screen protector and a back skin because of this same problem.
It sucks.... I feel your pain brother.

That's not a negative. That's just you being careless.
Sorry to hear this. I too am pretty OCD about my devices. I love the look and feel of my N4 without cases and screen protectors, so this is of course a nightmare for most of us. I'm just glad to read that you're not one of the many users who thinks that just because someone puts the word "Gorilla" in front of another word must automatically mean its the most durable thing on the planet. I dare some of those people to go kick a set of gorilla balls and see how durable they are.

I go crazy over scratches too! I stuck with the factory protector until I bought the SGP protector. Feels just like glass and you can't even tell it's on the Nexus 4.
I honestly don't get why people are getting so pissed off. All this post was to show people my experience. Also a way to warn people about the screen. It was to tell everyone and warn them about my mistake and be careful about it.

Ignore the critics mate.
I did this early on with my s2 and was gutted. Seems the glass in whatever form has a long way to go before it can resist sand and general grit.
I hate cases, bumpers, screen protectors, skins blah blah but when I get a new device always buy loads.. Sad thing is novelty wears off and in 3 months it'll have none of the above on it and I'll have fallen into my bad ways of keeping it in a pocket with change or keys etc!
Moral of the story - what seems bad now you'll get used to and start to ignore! Doesn't make it a huge bummer tho.

Will never understand why people don't use screen protectors and cases for their phones.

Does anyone else find the rough edges a bit annoying in daily use?

Don't get me wrong, I really like the design (though I kinda miss the awesome looking back cover of N4 and the phone reminds me of current Xperia design a bit too much) but the rough edges make it harder to put inside my pocket, as well as make phone calls a bit painful to my ear.
Rough edges?

I don't find them rough. They protrude, but smoothly. Is it the fact they're not flush you're referring to.

I don't get how the edges make it hard for you to put the phone in your pocket. Do you wear skinny jeans? The edges aren't flush or tapered like how it was on my Nexus 4 but it isn't anything terrible. I do admit I wish they were tapered though.

I like the sharper edge, it's part of the package that makes this phone feel awesome in the hand. I really don't know how it affects putting it in your pocket though...

I can see where you're coming from. I came from a VZW GNex too, and the edges are a bit more pronounced than the rounded feel of the GNex. But I, personally, dig it. Plus, I have it in Diztronic TPU case anyways, so they are not as "sharp" as they are without the case.
Sent from my TouchPad using xda app-developers app
yes edges are really sharp for me too, but i have a case which helps a lot
The same here. This is probably the one and only "negative" thing (really minor) about this device I noticed.
When making a phone call, I can clearly feel the sharp edge cutting through my ear (exaggeratedly speaking).
A bit unpleasant, but can be easily avoided by not pushing a phone against the ear too much.
(owning white version)
If I "roll" my thumb over the side of the phone in normal use (pretend you were "swiping out" from the middle of the screen until your thumb totally leaves the surface), I can feel the edge of the plastic housing sticking up just a tiny fraction of a millimeter above the glass.
I'm assuming everybody has this? For me, it's the only thing about the whole device that doesn't feel "premium". I come from a Galaxy S2, so in a way it's better (the S2 edges had a chrome plating that chipped off, which felt gross) but in a way it's worse (at least they were never "sharp"). I figure I'll get used to it, and maybe they'll wear a bit smoother with use.

Are these as fragile as the thread makes it seem?

I am seeing a lot of screen breaks even with a good case. Is this thing as fragile as it seems from all these posts? I just ordered one.
I have dropped mine twice on a hard floor....once was from over waist high. No issues.
No problems here and the screen also seems very scratch resistant.
Thing you have to remember though is that the bigger the screen is, the easier it will be due to the fact there is more surface area.
But no problems I can report as of yet. 3 months strong...

Just get a small clear case like for instance the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Clear for a few bucks, its better to prevent then to repair
The bigger they are the harder they fall!
But I did drop mine from about chest high on to the kitchen floor and it survived.
