It can, and people have gotten it to work on other carriers. However, the main reason for doing so, IMHO, is primarily for people moving from sprint to some other carrier and not wanting to buy a phone right away, or even more so people who have sprint but who are going out of the country for vacation, study abroad, etc.
Chances are you will likely not be happy with the experience you have with a sprint one on AT&T because you won't get LTE, and in most places you won't even get 3g. The only time you will get data faster than EDGE/GSM is if you are in an area where they have HSPA+ running on the 1900MHZ spectrum, and those areas are far from ubiquitous.
Thanks bro. I heard it will get Hspa+ which I'm cool with, because I don't get LTE here anyways. Do u know how I would go about this? Or can point me in the right direction? Thanks bro.

first off you need to be on stock sprint rom or base for this to work. also it will work on bad esn phones
1. You should be rooted
2. Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm
3. Run Terminal Emulator
4. Type "su" (excluding quotation marks) and grant it superuser permission
5. Type "am start com.redbend.vdmc/com.htc.omadm.test.TestMainActivity" (excluding quotation marks)
6. You will get menu on your HTC
7. In that menu, select "API", then scroll down 'till almost end and select "simlock"
8. Reboot the phone and hopefully it would accept GSM SIM
9. Enter *#*#4636#*#* in your dialer
10.In the phone information section(the first one) set preferred network type to something that is GSM specific: "WCDMA Preferred", for example. The phone will switch to GSM mode

You won't get HSPA/HSPA plus unless its on the appropriate frequencies, and those frequencies are pretty rare on AT&T, though they do exist in some places. You might want to try to find out if they are what is around you.

But i'm saying just because you have HSPA+ on your AT&T branded one, that doesn't mean you will get it on the Sprint One. The AT&T one has more frequencies that it can pick up on for HSPA+, so it will get it anywhere AT&T offers it. The sprint one does not have as many frequencies, so getting it will be dependant on the frequency that its broadcast on.
Think of it like walkie talkies or hand held radios. ATT towers in your area maybe broadcasting on channel 4, and the ones in the next town may be on channel 6. If you have an AT&T walkie talkie, you would be able to pick up on those. But the sprint walkie talkie only has channel 6, so you won't get it at home, but you would in the next town. Does that make sense?

Currently Google cannot legally do an lte update, there was never a FCC filing for lte capabilities.Google will first need to file and then probably do other paper work before nexus can be authorized.

There's nothing for them to do. All you need is .27 or .33 radio and not .48. Also it is not wise to use the unregistered lte device on the network, eventually T-Mobile will boot you off or maybe even blacklist the imei. I would suggest calling T-Mobile and asking for one of the higher reps that can offer some insight.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yeah didn't think about just changing versions...and as fat as T-Mobile they won't do anything, nor do they really care. My brother in law is a regional supervisor, handles our tristate area for years now. Said their only concern are phones that get bought from T-Mobile with the payment option and then being sold and account closed or suspended. They will and have been actively banning for them.

I don't see why you want LTE on the N4...it will cause your battery to drop ridiculously fast as it doesn't have a certain "amplifier" needed for LTE to function properly. I believe I read that on anandtech. I'll try to find the link and share.

I don't think it's the phones fault.
I live and work in eastern MA where LTE has been rolling out for the last 6 months or so.
As I drive I bounce between 4G and 3G.
When it loses 4G but still good 3G around it takes forever to switch back.
Often it gets stuck in 1x or Data is just hung or broken.
Flipping radio off and on fixes it.
My htc evo 4g lte did the exact same thing.
This behavior also chews up battery.
I have now forced the phone to cdma only and it's way mote stable.
This happens all over, not just one location.
I had to force my htc evo 4g lte to cdma too.
I had weird issues also. I would be right near a 4g tower and kit would take forever to switch over. If you were traveling through the area it may never switch (as it happened a few times). Needless to say, sold my EVO back to Best Buy on the buyback program for $280 and switched to T-Mobile. Best decision ever. Great speed and coverage.

Meanwhile my lte is great. I think it kinda depends on your market at this point. Also the lte scan value is set to 300 on this phone. I think the evo was set lower, can't remember.

It takes my phone a few a little bit to switch when i go into NYC. Long Island does not have 4g yet but every time i go into the city once its switches over it seems stay steady. Just recently switched to Sprint, i had been a Tmobile customer for the last 6 year. As for there "4g" or data in general i never had good data indoors. It didn't really matter if i was in long island or visiting family in Chicopee ma. With sprint I am not running into this issue nearly as often.
Yep, I'm about to return mine and go back to tmobile. With 4 bars of 4g it still cycles between 4g and 3g, horrible. Because 3g is so bad that no internet radio would buffer, so I'd be working out at the gym and after about 2 songs it switches to 3g and no more music till I either cycle the phone, or airplane mode. And even if 4g is connected, rarely is it faster than 4mbps anywhere.

Lte is still brand new to sprint. And is growing very fast. Here in western Washington they set a schedule of 50 sites for 90 days ending in just about a week and we are right on schedule. My aie just reported that sprint set another schedule for 250 sites in 90 days. More sites means less crowded on the few sites they have now. Faster lte speeds, more stable/reliable and faster connection speeds when traveling. Sprint is converting every site to lte and when that happens, you can all stop your complaining. Currently lte is just a baby to sprint. Tmobile is a joke as a carrier. Sure their hspa+ is fast but don't expect to be ahead of the game once sprint and att finishes their lte rollout this year. And it's good for when you can actually use it lol. I travle all over the states and I've always had the best phones offered by each carrier and I wouldn't wish tmobile on my worst enemy.

Right... Specially when in many cities tmobile tests much better than sprint in just about everything? Sure, their device lineup wasn't the best, but with all the latest devices and the improvements tbeyve made, not to mention metro pcs acquisition...
Point is, go into any crowded city and you have dialup on sprint, even locations that they've already converted to lte are still deeply, T-Mobile will give you Better performance in most cases. Oh, and look st their lte rollout vs sprint, they are doing it way faster and more efficient.

Look I'm pissed at Sprint right now but you can not compare the kind of roll out T-mobile is doing to anything of the magnitude that Sprint is doing. The amount of work being done versus the 2 of them are night and day..
But then again Sprint put themselves in the position they are in by being behind the curve..

At some point, people willstop buying into what sprint says. When wimax was rolling out every rep was told to sell $10 premium data fee as 4g fee, then, they start charging it for even a 3g device. Is the fee unreasonable? No, but the approach sprint took is messed up. Then, they scrap wimax, and I do get why, they had to, it wasn't really good to begin with. So wimax coverage gets smaller and markets end up relying more on already taxed backhaul, equalling in terrible data performance.
I can't tell you how many times they've had towers down with no eta on repairs in Colorado last year, was insane. Network vision does look good in theory, but those upgrades were planned years ago, before every tower was this massively overloaded.
And I agree, sprint is doing a lot to fix their issues, the fact that they plan to have lte on every tower is pretty awesome, definitely better than what T-Mobile will have with only hspa+ areas upgraded. So, if you go to rural areas a lot, then sprint may be the way to go. My problem is the timeline, you can't really have a network that barely gets 200kbps in a major downtown area during the day at this time and age. Their planned upgrades, are way behind schedule, check s4guru is pretty much shows how delayed it is becoming. Yet sprint keeps selling it as ahead of schedule... How?
Even Softbank says that sprint won't have the money to finish network vision unless their deal goes through, not s good sign.
T-Mobile isn't the best by any means, I do like their hspa network, it is fast! Even in dense areas I still maintain consistently high download speeds, regardless of the time of day. And I'm talking downtown Washington, Arlington, Denver, Atlanta, New York, Chicago. Their initial lte launch is covering up areas rather fast, even here in dc they already have s pretty substantial coverage, and it isn't even live yet.
Sprint called their cities live with 15% of sites upgraded, how misleading is that? When a consumer sees that sprint has lte coverage, what is their expectation? To have that service available most of the time... But if only 15-30% of sites are upgraded, is that going to happen? Unlikely

Call Sprint customer care and have them check your UICC ID under settings/about/phone identity. I had exchanged my phone and this number didn't update and caused me to not get 4g when others had it. Its the same number as your SIM ID and is required to match your phone. Seems to be a common issue with setting up the HTC One since is has a SIM Card. They may argue with you that its for International only....tell them I understand that but you have seen others with this problem and that their UICC ID numbers did not match on the account and that its required to make 4g work.
Ok, thanks

Yea you have to call them with confidence that you know what the issues are. And in markets they have not launched yet just explain that data is very bad on this phone and you get a lot of dropped calls. Then just ask them to please verify the numbers on your account with the phone....and especially the UICC ID.
I live in LA as well, and I only get LTE in a few different specific areas. Should I call them to make sure all of my numbers are correct? Is there anything else I can do?

Yea you have to call them with confidence that you know what the issues are. And in markets they have not launched yet just explain that data is very bad on this phone and you get a lot of dropped calls. Then just ask them to please verify the numbers on your account with the phone....and especially the UICC ID.

PM me your zip code(s) of where you use your phone the most. I will send you a map of those areas and the towers that are upgraded. Not everything is complete there.

I called sprint today, and they confirmed
The uicc I'd #, and it was correct on there system. ...what they have me do was to remove the SIM card, turn off the phone, put back the SIM card in, turn on the phone, update profile & prl. After doing this after 5 mins it showed the 4g on my phone, only for about 5sec.....then it went back to 3g....this was a good sign tho* .. I'm going to try it tommarrow at work since over there there's a steady lte connection...hope it works

Well if not you can always do an Insurance replacement if you have it. There is always a chance you have a bad radio.
slayer69,
Could you please send me the map a zip 90703? Thanks a lot,

Hello Everyone,
Seeing as I'm a MetroPCS user and I don't see any MetroPCS/Nexus 5 related threads yet, I decided to create one. In which we may discuss all things related to our Nexus 5's on MetroPCS's BYOD Network (T-Mobile).
Post your experiences, speed tests, ideas, questions, etc.
MetroPCS 4G Cap Speeds.
Well to get things started, I currently have MetroPCS $40.00 plan in which I have 500MB of 4G LTE. But get this guys, I'm past 500MB, I'm at 840MB and my speeds still haven't been throttled down.

What do you guys think?
Been wanting to see what speeds or connection I'd get dropped to after, but still going strong on 4G!

Are you noticing no slow down on your speeds or connection type? Whats your speedtest results? When you hit say 500mb on the $40 plan you still will stay on LTE but will have throttled speeds, They wont force you down to 3G or EDGE

Nope, fastest speed test today on 4G was 21mbps down. I haven't been throttled yet.
I'm wondering if I do get throttled if I can force 3G after, and have unlimited 3G speeds like when I was Houdini flashed?

Not sure. You mean by flashed was on the old MetroPCS network? (CDMA)? Since the new network is GSM prob wont. I`d love to try out MetroPCS they have the $60 plan but not sure if the website will let me order, As the closest Metro Market to me is Atlanta but I live 3 hours from there in a state with none of there original coverage, But T-Mobile is all around me so I`m not sure if its now based on T-Mobile covergae when ordering or there original coverage areas.
Does tethering work?

Truthfully I haven't tried tethering yet, I've had my N5 on MetroPCS for about a week and a half only.

Tethering will work the same as t-mobile. We're running on the t-mobile network and the throttling is down to 20kbps. I'm on the unlimited for 60 plan because it's so slow.

Was waiting for you to come around.
Throttling is down to 20kbps!
Is their any way around it, like forcing CDMA mode or something to get 3G?

Not sure exactly how to do that with the Nexus 5. I don't think there is a way to do it though since it's gsm.

Do you get throttled as soon as you hit your Data limit?

First time I got throttled very quick. I barely got over 500 and was already throttled. This is pretty much 15kBytes per second download.

dont you mean WCDMA? CDMA and GSM are completely two different networks that are not compatible with each other..
GSM - T-Mobile, AT&T / MetroPCS uses T-Mobile towers on the GSM side.
CDMA - Verizon, USCELLULAR, Sprint, MetroPCS (BEFORE T-Mobile Bought them)(or for Bring your on phone)
On GSM 3G is called WCDMA which is not the same as CDMA.

Yes indeed I meant WCDMA, but Thanks for pointing it out.
Interesting, when I put WCDMA I get 3G but whenever I try to load a webpage it goes to H..

Let me explain that
3G - UMTS - original 3G up to like 7.2megs something like that. 99 of the time when using data you will be on H/H+ in the USA anyway
H - HSPA = UP to 21mbps down
H+ - HSPAP (something like that there's other variations for that one) 21mbps down or DC is 42mbps down which T-Mobile has

I bought a sprint htc one anfter a lot of tampering/ softbricking i finally got the bootloader unlocked the Bad Boys rom installed and achieved S-off
using the fire water method
i am on 4.4.2 on a network called digicel everything works fine with one exception NO 4G very disappointing ive unlocked GS4 for sprint for use on the network called Digicel and it worked so im curious if anyone knows of anyway for me to get said 4G on sprint htc one ive done enough research the sprint htc one does have the required basebands to support 4G but as of now all it display's is gsm
Ay help is kindly appreciated also if there is another thread with the same question posted i apologize for asking again, didnt come across any answers in my search. Thanks in advance
I'm going to be doing something similar soon when I go to Jamaica (Sprint is unlocking for international SIM use for me) so hope I can help...did you make sure you have a 4g plan from digicel?...if I remember correctly, they have a seperate plan that had seperate 4g charge incorporated...correct if I'm wrong...maybe you need to add 4g to your plan?

i thought of that also but when i unlocked the samsung galaxy s4 previously i didnt need to activate 4G once i put the sim in i would pick up the 4G one i was in a good coverage area, digicel's 4G service is kinda spotty im in antigua, if i go to the town or on a hill id get 4G in most places, i dont believe that im even getting 3G on the htc one as it only says gsm :/

Ahhh, hmmm, in that case I don't know...interesting though to see how it works out for me...mine will be just for fun/emergency use for a week but still would be nice to have good connection. Update me/us if/when you get it figured out.

First make sure your APN settings match your carrier. Second make sure in network settings make sure you have chosen CDMA/LTE. Sprint always shows that stupid GSM sign when using it on a GSM network outside US. Do this with a file explorer go to /ststem/customize/AAC/default.xml change sku_id to 42 and reboot
The phone will show the correct sign 3G, H, etc

i finally got the file edited, now it shows an E i will try a sim i know has 4G and post an update thank for the help
it would really help to know if this worked for you as im thinking of buying a sprint htc one since they are cheaper to use in jamaica on that same digicel. so its great to know that it works would be better to know if the 4g works or atleast if the network data speed is good since im a wifi kinda guy
sprint galaxy S4 has 4g 1700/2100mhz for gsm networks but sprint htc one has no 4g for gsm networks , so 4g will not work.
