I love a dock for a phone or a tablet. Just sitting on my desk for easy access and easy charging. I've not been able to find one that looked like it would work. Obviously no first party, and haven't found any third party either.
Anyone found something, or had success modding something else to work?
BN actually does sell one, Google it. $40 is a bit steep though, I'd wait for a sale or coupon (ppl sometimes post them here).

Not so much of a dock, but heres a stand i made acouple weekends ago.
Its made from aluminium and some brass.
The main thing i wanted was to be able to kick the nook up on end while i was at work to read eBooks but, also be able to have the nook plugged in to charge or plug in a USB drive.
Diffinitly have to be careful with the two "knobs" on the front which are used to hold the nook in the stand, to tight and you could crush the nook. So are its been working pretty good. The side knobs are used to tighten/loosen the stand to you can tilt the nook at different angle.

hahaha... by "trade" im a machinist. The place i work for is down sizing and come Jan ill be out of work and will probably be going to school/collage. I bought the Nook to study up for the admittance tests (its been a while since ive been in high school) and read/study while im at work. I bought a real screen protector, but at work my hands are grimy and i did not want to ruin it in the short time (three months) so what you see is the plastic sleeve that the Nook comes in when you buy them... in that picture its all crinkled and messed up. After Jan i will put the real scree protector on.
I made the stand in my basement, if it was not so time consuming i would try and sell them, but for the cost of the material and my time invested it would be priced around $75! lol
One nice thing about it though, it will probably out last my nook

Well that makes sense then. Sucks your going to be out of work though, I'm in my 30's and started up college a couple years ago so I was nervous about the entry exams as well. They aren't that bad though. Good luck with the schooling.

Magnetic Trick #1
Okay, so you are loving that you can sling a football game to your new NC while snacking in the kitchen, but your are stumped.....where can you safely mount your nook? If you purchased a Industriell Easel Cover, then your problem is solved. It turns out that the magnet, built to hold the clasp in place, is a very strong rare earth type. So strong in fact, that you can mount the entire thing on the refrigerator door. I know it seems risky, but the mount is surprisingly firm. Now, I not suggesting you attempt with house full of drunken Super Bowl buddies, or lot of active refrigerator friendly little ones about; but for breakfast news viewing you might find it handy.
****note: Any metal surface will work, you could for example use the side of the refrigerator if you find the door too risky. Please whatever you do, don't use the oven.
Magnetic Trick #2
Still not sold on this versatile NC cover? Then check out this second horizontal or vertical mounting option. Take a metal bookend holder, the old school library type, with the cork or felt protective base. Bend the vertical tab to your favorite viewing angle, then slide it between the flap and back cover. The magnets stick to the bookend, the mount is extremely stable ,and it looks nice to!
Very cool. Thanks for the info. Now if I only had a car from the 60's or older, this would make a perfect dash mount.
I shudder to think of driving an old car like that; drum brakes, metal rings on the steering wheel, no seat belts, metal dash and seats without head rests. How did people live though accidents?
OP thanks for solidifying my choice. I was on the fence before this idea of yours.

It turns out that I have such a car, and old 66 mustang convertible, and I used to drive it, single bowl drum brakes and all, in Houston traffic! Yes, I was younger, yes I was very very, okay, extremely stupid, but the funny thing was the way other people reacted. I had driven an old 3/4 ton company truck and it was dog eat dog.....brutal Darwin style driving, but when I hit the road in the Mustang, the traffic parted like for the Red Sea for Moses. People would wave me in, if you've ever hazarded the Houston Interstate nightmare you can appreciate how incredible that is. It was an amazing experience. Hmmm, you've got me thinking now, I might have go see if that thing will stick to the dash...........

The Nook Color works well with my slingbox, I think I have an AV model. I can also confirm that it tethers to my captivate (froyo 2.2 rom) and slings over cell network.
I almost learned about the magnet the hard way. Was home working on a computer and had my nook next to me with this case and just about set a hard drive down on top of it until I noticed all of the screws sticking together. I just figured the magnet was in the metal buckle and not the case. Never thought about sticking it to the fridge though. Tried it and it worked pretty well. THANKS!

Well, solid state drives are getting cheaper and faster every day. For that matter, I haven't used my venerable old laptop much since I fell in love rooting some nookie. If the recent breakthroughs in Bluetooth plays out I might have to retire the old girl.
Wow! I wonder how early BN opens...
very darn cool...I was trying to stomach getting the Lautner case, as I wanted it to look half descent but want portrait and landscape positions (landscape for airplane flights)...I may go with this...
Thanks to the OP...
I got my nook a week before my wife went into labor. When we were leaving the hospital I forgot my nook on the rook of our car. Our house is about 9 turns and 4 miles away with speeds from 40-60 mph. I got to about 1 mile away from home going 60 mph and I heard a thump. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw my nook on the spoiler. I stopped and everything was fine. I am betting the magnet helped the nook stay on top of our car and I am so thankful I got the case.
Bouncing Baby
Nice magnetic nook save and a new baby to boot. Heck a new baby is almost as nice as getting a new phone, even better because the baby will get continuous free upgrades for life. Samsung and HTC can't match that. All joking aside though, can you imagine how sad and primitive all Dads' hot technology will look to that little one twenty years hence? Well my best wishes to mommy, the little one......and congratulations to the new Dad!
I was planning on going to BN this morning to buy this case and use it with the book-end mod for landscape viewing, but then I found (and ordered) this:
It's under $20 and has 17 5-star reviews and 3 4-star reviews (out of 20 total reviews). There are also a couple of customer-contributed images of a Nook Color in a case sitting in it, in both portrait and landscape.
Hi jason, I saw that stand too and at the time I thought it might make a nice bedside stand. I went with the mag cover for the portability, the protective cover it would provide and, because of my poor impulse control..., the old "I have to have it right now". Its best feature, the magnetic component, was an unexpected bonus.
I'm still interested in how your stand performs, stability wise or, any such observations you might wish to share, once you take the plunge and get some user experiance.

Question guys and appreciate any feedback. I really want a Xoom but im holding off for a wifi version but I know once I do get one my 3 year old will want to take it over as he has already taken over my Evo. Hes a phone hog and a battery killer with all his angry birds and apps that he has on there lol (very proficient Android 3 year old). How durable is the NC? Like tough wise. Think itll survive a 3 year olds destruction? I was looking around and they can be found for $200 bucks online. This way I can mess around with an Android Tablet and the kid can use it instead of my phone or xoom once I get that.
I have one and it feels pretty solid to me. I even dropped mine from about chest high straight onto a hard wood floor once. Picked it up and it worked like a charm.
I have a 6 week old, but he's a little young to give it the proper "kid test" you're looking for.

lol .. Yeah he'll probably be stealing my tech toys before I know it. It's actually great for long drives. My wife and I drove to my parents last weekend. It's an hour drive (so not real long but still). I have the NC tethered to my Evo. She browsed the web and read most of the trip. She loved it.
I think she was pretty skeptical when I bought it at first. She quickly came to love it though. After the first week she would say, "are you taking the Nook to work with you again??" .. haha .. so I started leaving it at home. Once a solid Honeycomb port hits I might purchase her, her own NC.

I can't really tell. When we drove it was at night. I've used it around an office with fluorescent lights everywhere with no problem. Glare wise it's probably about like the Evo since it's a glass surface. If I think about it tomorrow I'll check them side by side.
I let my 6 year old use mine for the read-to-me books as well as Angry Birds, though i have to remind her to be careful with it. I did get a Squaretrade warranty for it for $30 (normally $39 for 2 yrs) so that adds a little piece of mind. I'd definitely add a warranty to it if you can if you're planning to let the little one play with it.

Haha, I remember how anxious I was when I let my six-year-old cousin-in-law borrow my week-old iPhone 4 to play "AAAANGWY BIRRRDS!" (man there are an awful lot of dashes in that sentence).
With the rubberized back and solid plastic outer, I think the NC should stand up pretty well, but a case wouldn't hurt. Just make sure that he doesn't throw it across the room when he gets stuck on a level... I've been known to do that occasionally.

You can hang or sit your nook from/on just about anything with that. Plus you can use it to wrap around your hand when your holding it. The non-tablet version works fine. I just got one last week, and I haven't been without it since.

Very doubtful considering it was designed for thicker tablets like the Xoom, Galaxy, G-tab, etc.
It can also be adjusted to many different positions to counteract any stability issues you might have. I believe the Amazon link shows a Nook with case on it.
This stand is pretty good. My only complaint is that in portrait mode I can't figure a way to have it charge at the same time as using it. Other than that the stand is perfect!

Are you referring to the folding one that looks like it fits a picture frame? That looked durable and it was only $15, but I can't find one online either. The guy also wouldn't take one out of the box to try it.
Last night I got inspired (by the Netflix app ) to make a functional and nice looking stand. But instead of jumping in blindly with plexiglass or something I built a prototype out of cardboard.
I was thinking of making the final version a bit smaller so it fits nicer when vertical and maybe making a notch in it so the home button is accessible. Something I can't figure out how to fix is that the speaker is inside the stand when vertical. But other than that I'm really happy how this turned out and can't wait to make a final version.
Attached are some pictures of it holding the Nook horizontal and vertical. Any comments, ideas or questions would be appreciated. Thank you.
Not bad though if you are worried about the speaker it would be realy easy to rigup a pair of speakers with a 1/8" stereo jack on your final build

Ah phooey! I see the benefit of DIY. True, sometimes there are cheaper solutions out there. But this user's solution gave "me" many ideas for other devices, my wife's iPad, my Evo, Books! I like the ingenuity involved in the OP's solution. I'm going to make something like this out of plexiglass--the OP's idea. 1 sheet of pl (home depot), my jigsaw, some cement, buff the edges, felt the edges to protect the nook, rubber little feet (Rite Aid), listen to jazz while I'm making it and have a blast! $20. It's going to look a lot better than a little cheap rack holding holding up a nook. Nice going!
I agree, sometimes it's about the journey, not the destination.

I have one of these and, while it's great for my XOOM, it doesn't really fit the NC very well. It's OK for landscape but if you want your NC to stand in portrait while charging you have to put the stand on a book or the edge of a table to allow space for the cable. Actually I found this thread because I was looking for a better stand.
I definitely see the advantages of DIY to satisfy your own requirements. Good luck!
I use this case stand since I got my Nook Color in January. I see that now Amazon for fulfils the orders for it now. I had to wait two weeks back then but it was worth it. No excuses not to get it now.

Get a good Bluetooth keyboard I actually bought the Apple one from Amazon and you're in heaven.
Anyone know of an accessory that would help my Shift stand by itself, such as when taking a picture? Or maybe a DIY stand?
Thanks!
Never heard of one. Evo users always flaunt their stand like it's a big deal. Never seen the need for one.
The main use I see for the stand that Evo users use it (or any phone with a stand for that matter) for is for playing movies and music. (This is why I have an HP touchpad).
I actually went to breakfast with a friend today that has a Windows Phone 7 on T-Mobile with a stand and tried to start watching netflix.
I then started laughing at him because he couldn't get service and I said hold on let me turn on my "4g". Turned 4G on, got connected and then I said "Oh wait.. I cancelled netflix 3 months ago."
Moral of the story: It's useless. And there is only 1 camera on the phone and it's on the back. So I guess you could DIY a stand for the camera but honestly I just don't find it very practical or see a high demand for it.
Don't let me stop you from googling it further or creating a DIY tutorial though. Never really cared for this feature on my phone. More important than a stand to me is that lovely hardware keyboard.
i do enjoy my keyboard
thanks for the help!
If you look in amazon for tripods for cameras, there's one that comes with a clip that can hold your phone so you can user your camera with the timer mode.
It's been a long time since I got me one but it worked just right.

You could get a car dock that has a suction cup and one of those bean bag things that are used in cars for the gps. May be slightly bulky but would be a fine short stand.
I have a setup similar to this for my car and could use it as a tripod in a pinch.

i haven't seen one specifically for the Shift yet, and i'm surprised no one has created a case with one built in. hell, i'm just happy the MikShifted-G ROM lets me use the volume button to take a pic lol. pressing the button without looking at the screen was a pain in the ace.
I used an old cd and used a lighter to soften it up to bend it into shape I could work with, I only use it while listening to music.
Got the idea from some DIY site and it has worked fine for my needs.
I found that a PSP-1000 stand works great... unless the app has a fixed landscape and doesn't rotate. However I could just tilt the shift so the usb plug fit underneath and the stand still functioned (if at an odd angle). It doesn't hold the phone securely, so no carrying it around in the stand but it is good enough to withstand a table bump.

Used to find them cheap, used @ gamestop
Seidio also makes a desktop charging cradle that i'm sure could be modified slightly for just about any need while keeping the charge function. Just throwing that out there.
