[Q] Xperia Z1 loudspeaker - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello ,
I have bought a Z1 recently and came to know that the loudspeaker volume is lower than its predecessors. I saw the speaker grill , though its wider only one half of the area works. What does this mean? The volume coming out is a mono channel? Or can we expect sony to deliver an update to enable the other speaker if it exists!!. But i think there is another speaker which is not enabled !
Anyone else observed this? Or i just got a faulty piece :crying:

One thing to mention is that the efficiency or the loudness of the phone is limited because of the waterproofing, it does not let sound escape as well as other phones.

Mine is way louder than my Xperia z , speaker placement is also better I don't constantly cover the speaker when watching a youtube video. My xperia Z was probably the worst speaker I have ever had, couldn't hear S**T. As mentioned the waterproofing will affect it a bit but it is much improved over it predecessor IMO

[Q] Xperia Z sound/volume

I've had my Xperia Z for 2 days and when im on call the sound is very low and crap compared to my samsung galaxy mini 2 Why is this expensive phone crap against a cheap phone? Also when listening to music the volume is crap and fails to beat other devices. I might get a refund today.

I noticed that the in call quality was not very good, than I noticed that I didn't hold the device correctly with a minor adjustment it sounded much better. I think this is because the ear speaker is pretty small so it is easy to muffle it with a part of your face/ear. For music listing via ear phones and head phones I think the volume is loud enough as I never had to put it over 80% but I'm not deaf and have always been relatively careful with my ears.
Many reviews have mentioned about the poor speaker and not so good call quality. I guess it's due to being water-resistant, the speaker grill blocks most of the sound.
I also find that the volume through headphones is also weak. At maximum, the loudness is only half of my iPhone 4s

First of all, stop using the word crap in every sentence. It's not "cool".
Volume is and will be lower because of waterproof body - it was obvious and that info is not a secret.
Volume through headphones is not low - and it wasn't made to "beat" other devices. It beats most of them in sound quality, and I'm pretty sure that's what Sony was aiming at. With the headset that came with the phone it is lower than most, but that's because it has high independence value ( strong speakers ). Connect your Samsung headset and you'll see no difference - at least I don't see it with Note 2 headset, the volume is exactly the same - but on Sony's headset it is lower.
Did the Arc not originally have very poor sound and was then was fixed with an update? Mine should arrive tomorrow, whats's the comparison between the two?

I have mate, nothing seems to work.. the quality isn't good enough. My cousin has been researching for me because it's waterproof the sound isn't high enough. I showed my xperia z to my friends today they said the phone has amazing graphics but the sound and design fails it.. also when you press on the screen you can see those pixel things popping up :/ but when i do that on my friends Note 2 it doesn't happen.

I have to agree with OP, but thats not all, the sound mutes even more, and makes crackling noise like the volume is overdriven even if its very low, its like hearing the speaker for the ear on the top is playing the sound on way to high volume... But its not, its the "external" speaker...
Whats wrong?
Ive tried to reboot and kill all apps to see if something is conflicting with the internal soundcard, no luck.
Its kind of ironic, Sony is a high end TV, Hifi and camera producer, but what ive seen so far is one of the poorest quality all over, everything is years behind Iphone...

So one of the feautures is unstable volume/speaker?
I bought it cause i THOUGHT it was the best android phone, and because i work with cross platform app dev and needed to get into the Android system.
Ive been using Iphone for the past 6 years, but i realize now that even iOS might have a boring UI, its lightyears ahead of other phones when it comes to intuitive control, screen quality and stability, but i forgive your ignorance, and im not offended :good:
I also feel the in-call volume is quite soft. Hope someone can make a mod to increase the speaker volume
Don't get me wrong it's just because I used to be ios users all'so and it got boring sooner than expected  but that's not the point...if u still gonna keep your XZ,just wait till 4.2.2 updated comes, with 3.6 kernel its the fix for the 1080p screen n all other good stuff on this baby peace-out

I doubt you can see pixels popping up when you press on the screen, pixels on the Z screen are tiny, and always there they don't pop up and down, every inch (linear inch not square inch) there are 440 pixels. I don't doubt your seeing something though Probably LCD bleed, either you are pressing with great force (something you shouldn't be doing), or the unit is faulty. If it is the latter you should get it replaced under warranty.

No prob dude, just venting back
Guys lets be realistic here. OP - you are comparing another phone with a TOTALLY DIFFERENT DAC. The WCD9310 is pretty quite, i totally agree with that but you can't blame it on the whole phone or software... I have tried experiments to increase volume levels, it somehow increases volume levels SLIGHTLY but increasing any further resorts to distortions, DAC popping noises (When you stop any sound, the DAC forces all the vibrations to stop immediately) and background hissing sounds (Too much voltage going on)
The DAC itself cannot handle loud volumes very well but it does a pretty good job at audio quality.
The DAC on the galaxy mini 2, however, is totally different from the DAC in this phone (Not sure what DAC is on the galaxy mini 2). Samsung generally uses Wolfson or "Good" DACs which are able to produce loud sounds without a problem.
The Droid DNA/HTC Butterfly has the same chip and dac as the Xperia Z BUT! it is able to produce louder volumes.. Why?
Well, it's because HTC uses a extra internal amplifier to make sounds much louder. This way, HTC is able to produce much louder volumes with no distortions because of that amplifier.
Next time you choose a phone, make sure it's not using a S4 PRO... or that it's using a WCD9310 DAC...
I'm sure the S800 processor will have a much better DAC (Not sure about S600 though)
Just to clear up a little thing, my concern was not the sound in general, but a bug that comes and goes, it can disappear just from one lock screen session to another.
IF i was to guess, it could be a conflict with a sound enhancement plugin, ive tried to narrow it down to just one in addition to the built in...
So far i didnt notice any improvement, it still comes and goes irregularly...

One more thing, dont know if its pure coinsidence, but it seems to happen after each time i rinse the phone in water... Yes all hatches firmly locked... maybe a auto moisture detection/protection?
I have purchase Xperia Z before 5 days everything is better but volume and WiFi drop signal is bad effect of it,
Before i have Galaxy S3, it's sound volume and WiFi signal are strong. Please tell me how can fix it on xperia z?

Z1 sound quality compared to Z & Z Ultra

Does anyone yet know how the speaker (and headphone) quality & loudness compare to other phones
Especially the Z & Z Ultra as the waterproofing evidently degraded the sound volume and quality.
Hoping it's been rectified this time.

The HTC One seems to have better sound for me
I wouldn't expect it to be, tbh, as long as it's better than the Z and loud enough, that's fine for me.
It sound loud enough fr me, but hey nobody want to hear your music, thats why we got an earphone

The HTC one has the best sound of all android phones due to beats and boomsound. I found that the Z1 speakers were not as loud as my S3 speakers but the sound out of them was definitely was of a better quality. Headphones was good but I need to mess around more with the settings etc to confirm!

Comparing to other phones I have, the Z1 speaker is obviously not as good as my One nor the S4 (I9500). It's about on par with my N7 which isn't bad but not at the top of end either.

Headphone jack problem

I heard electric noise for few seconds every time I plugged in my earphone to the phone. The noise dissappeared automatically after that.
I have tried a few earphones and they all have the same problem.
Any ideas??

Having the same problem here (.534 Firmware)! It is really annoying. First I thought it had something to do with Poweramps Auto-Play Feature, but it seems to be a general Headphone Bug.

Mine are Shure SE 215!
I found out that playing and pausing audio with any Audio Player does stop the noise signal after some seconds. Sometimes it also stops by itself. Very strange problem, did not experience it with my old Xperia S.
To me that sound similar to desktops. When you plug the speakers in the back. You hear the distortion before its in 100%.
Not sure what that is but doesnt seem to affect anything. Do yiu have any water in the headphone hole?
Maybe its the phones metal inside. Could be dust? Maybe something in there thats interfering with the headphone jack. Give it a good blow. Or a brush that can get in there.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4
The Distortion appears directly after plugging in the jack and stops after some seconds or upon pausing the audio. This is without touching or moving the cable, so it does not have something to do with the mechanical connection.
EDIT:
Ok I found something out: The noise just appears when using earphones with a standard connector with 3 lanes (Ground, Left and Right Channel). When using a headset with 4 lanes (Ground, Left, Right, Mic) there is no noise signal. Tried it with both a Sony and an Apple headset (no noise) and my Shure earphones (noise)
I have no clue why it behaves like this, though.
Could be a cheap way for them to make you spend more money on headphones.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 4
My Shures were definitely more expensive than the headsets I tested 3 vs 4 lanes is not a quality sign it's just so that a headset needs the 4th connector for the Microphone signal (correct me when I'm wrong).
I have similar issue on brainwavz B2 but that weird sound is gone after a while...
Looks like Im not alone on this issue. I have problems with Shure se210 and westone 4r.

Good idea, but it does not help. Also tried deactivating Smart Connect and rebooting, but there's still noise when plugging in the jack.
This really annoys me! Especially because it just happens with normal earphones and not with headsets, so it probably is not a hardware bug.

No, it has nothing to do with moving the device (and there definitely are no vacuum tubes in a mobile phone xD). But I am not sure if that was your question.

I have problems with jaybird bluebuds x :crying:
Well this is disturbing. I was hoping this kind of crap would have been sorted out by now. I posted a longer rant on another review of the Z1 on Engadget, but here's a snippet of what I wrote,
"I had a really bad experience with a Sony MD player. had a sharp md player, that I bought in Japan, and that thing was awesome. It did everything I wanted it to, It was pretty and sleek and I loved it. It died in a car wreck. Back in the states, I got a Sony to replace it. (only available brand at the time) Twice, I had to return it for a manufacture's repair because the headphone port kept crapping out and creating static on the headphones. The stupid retailer tried to convince me it was my headphones but I tried multiple pairs. The thing was a piece of garbage. Ever since then, I've had a bit of a sour taste regarding Sony's audio products. "
The problem you all are having seems a bit better, at least the static goes away after a couple of seconds. On my MD player, it would go away but then come back if I adjusted the headphones at all inside the jack, and sometimes without provocation. Has anybody noticed that the problem persists beyond a couple of seconds after the headphones are plugged in? If it does, It might just be the same flaw in Sony's headphone jack design. It's abhorrent to me, that a company that built its brand on audio fidelity is also the only company with which I've ever had a problem with something as simple as a headphone jack. I hope that this is the exception rather than the rule with these phones, because I still really want one. I guess one potential solution is to just use bluetooth headphones instead, but this doesn't solve the potential hardware problem, It's just a work-around, and when you pay that much for a flagship device, you shouldn't have to work around anything. The hardware should work flawlessly.
oops.. I ranted again.

This is the reply I got from Sony Mobile:
Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.
We are sorry to hear that you are having difficulties finding headphones to work with your Sony Xperia Z1.
The Sony Xperia Z1 uses a CTIA headphone jack and therefore will only be compatible with other CTIA headphones. As Sony do not test there phones with Third Party Manufacturers, such as Shure and Westone, we can not confirm that they use the same connectivity. You would need to speak to the headphones manufacturers to find this information.
The headphones and headset models which are compatible for your phone are listed below:
MH750
MK200
MW1
SBH20
MBH10
SBH52

[Q] Z1 C6903 Speaker problem

Just got our Z1 just last night. Humbly asking other Z1 C6903 owners if they have the same problem where the speaker really under-performs (sound quality is really really bad), for me at least comparing it to the iPhone 5, LG G2, and the S4 personally. The speaker is like from a low-end phone - makes the songs, etc. sound really really bad!
If there's a fix for this, please let me know.. Thanks!

the earpiece is where the LED light is, at the very upper edge of the phone. You need to put the phone slightly below your ears to have very good sound (not below your whole ear, make the edge of the phone to the middle of your ear, easier to move it down while the other side talking until you get the best sound). I remember it took me a while to figure it out the first day I got the phone.

there are couple of settings you could play with to improve the sound quality. The water-resistance of this phone reduced the loudness of the speaker, but you could try un-checking the Clearaudio+>go to sound enhancements>settings>check xLoud and try with and without Clear phase. Also try to modify the equalizer to your taste. When I compared my Z1 with my wife's SGS4, I can't see much differences, the SGS4 is a bit louder but that doesn't make the sound of the Z1 very very bad unless you have a defective unit.

Speaker Issue
The Z1 has two halves for the bottom speaker though covered by the mesh you wouldn't be able to differentiate. However only one half is the speaker. The other half is the microphone I am guessing. (Correct me if I'm wrong about this) How I figured this out is when I covered both halves individually while playing music. After the KitKat update my major issue has been the ringtones and notifications playing thru the earpiece rather than the speaker which makes it practically impossible to notice the phone is ringing. Anyone experiencing this?
a friend of mine has this problem after 4.4 ftf flash, if i reboot the phone everything is ok , sound plays corectly, but after a few calls and notifications, everything plays on earpiece

If you recently updated from 4.1 to anything more recent, there was a reduction in loudness. Some claimed they lowered due to speaker longevity, others say hearing protection. In any case, unless you roll back to your factory shipped stock, your stuck with the levels HTC set.
