NEXUS 7 Setup. ubuntu/otg/charge/hdd - Nexus 7 Accessories

hey droids!
just thought id share my set up atm incase anyone is keen to do something along the same lines.
Currently running Ubuntu 13.04 raring ringtail on the nexus 7, sitting on an adjustable stand i salavage from a desklamp.
when running the device i use a wireless mouse and wired keyboard via an otg cable and a 4 port usb hub, then a 1tb desktop HDD then to finish it off it an extra usb charger i wired up from the pogo pins
so far so good. it doesnt really charge while using it, it more sits at the same voltage lol so thats fine. when the screen is off it charges fine.
pics tomorrow

Sounds interesting, how do you charge it, using a pogo dock?

You should post pictures of your setup

30 pin galaxy tab to micro USB adapter

Hi, I I recently bought this adapter online so i don't have to carry two separate cables when I travel (one for tab, and other for phone).
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Gal...rs_Chargers&hash=item19c4c95c01#ht_1561wt_802
This product works well as it allows you to charge your tab with a micro sd cable and standard tab wall charger or any charger with usb dongle. If you have any questions let me know, I but I highly recommend this to all tab users who also have phones that charge through micro usb.

What I want to try next is to plug my s2 otg cable into the adapter and get host mode.
If anyone can link me to the kernel that works with overcome let me know.

I have (2) different micro usb host cables for galaxy s 2 and I was thinking of trying to consolidate and use them here too but I don't know how to compile a kernel with host capabilities.
If someone where to be able to make one for me that will work with overcome I can test this.

Got mine yesterday. Works Recomended!
I was gonna buy 1 but the description says "Computer + micro usb data cable can not charge. Please use the original wall adapter to charge with this cable!"
is it true that when you plug it in to a computer it will only do data but won't charge the battery?

If you want to use a computer or an usb wall charger you can buy a USB DC dongle and it will charge.
Ill link you to the one I have.

Interesting! What magic is making this happen? I thought usb was limited to 500ma draw before the computer starts complaining. Is this safe? I mean, it works, thats great but i'd love to know why/how?
No idea... but it charges for me. Slower than from the original USB wall charger but it will charge.

Nice find. Will this let my crappy $5 knockoff cables charge the tablet as well?

Nice! This is exactly what I was looking for, as I've repurposed my P1000 as a head unit and need to charge it in the car while it's in use, and didn't have any success hacking together a cable with resistors to do the trick.
what about file sync? i mean can it work like regular usb cable to connect tab2 to PC, for file managment and stuff?
it should be possible, since it's regular usb2.0 on the other side of the cable and micro-usb is just the same wiring but smaller...
so i noticed it doesn't charge from a PC's usb, and it will do if i use magical adapter mentioned in replies here, right?
The Question is = will it allow file management and charging at the same time if i use micro-usb and usb-charge adapter?
also found this: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/592818965/for_Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_USB_Adapter.html
it only states that it charges over micro-usb, not sure if it can transfer data.
and this: http://www.sunsky-online.com/view/232254.htm
this states that it's for P1000 (dunno, do they have same connector?) and it doesn't clarify if it's for charging only or can transfer data

Turtlebeach Setup Question

I have a 360 and I use the 360 wireless adapter which currently occupies the USB port on the back.
I see that the Turtlebeach requires me to plug this into the back USB port.
What's the best way to go about this? No, I will not use Ethernet cable or get the new Xbox.

Would a USB hub work?
Max. (From my Galaxy 2)
I have to look for a hub but I don't know if that'll work. This headset is hella complicated.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
No it doesn't need to be plugged into the back port. You can use any USB port (even one from your computer). The back port is recommended because it only provides power thus freeing up the other USB ports for things that don't only need power for
Or at least I think so. Either way any USB on your Xbox will work for your Turtle Beaches.
Cool. I will try it now. This thing is a beast. I didn't think people took mics this serious. My GF got it for me.

Longer Power cord

Any suggestions on this? It seems my nexus is very picky about only using the stock cord. I couldn't even get it to charge with my galaxy S2 cord. Charge icon was on but didn't charge.
Thoughts?

I use a USB 3.0 Cable extender that I got for like $3 off eBay. Charge time is the same and the cord is 6ft longer
Search and you will find a great thread on cables and chargers and what works and doesn't and why.
I picked up a couple of these when they were on discount ($9.95 at the time). LONG 6ft cables and they work great for not only the Nexus 7 but other devices as well (Raspberry Pi)...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OZMWUS
Even at the current price of $16.31 I would not hesitate to buy one.
Thanks guys, I will try that. I hate this little cord.

I used $random cable in the house, works fine. Just make sure you use the OEM charger, unless the cable is super crap it should just work.
Im using my old charger from my blackberry curve 8300 with a mini usb to micro usb adapter on it because it was the longest charger I have. It worked to charge my original evo 4g, it charges my evo lte, and it charges my nexus 7 as well.
Here: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5458&seq=1&format=2
I paid $3.94 total. Should have been smart and ordered two (other half wants one) but I wanted to be sure it works. It's great and plenty long enough.

I've got a couple of 2mtr cables with right angle micro usb plugs, cheap as chips off eBay and they work fine.

Question about physical keyboards

I was thinking about getting one to make typing easier when I'm surfing the web on my N7. Such as this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-920-003390-Tablet-Keyboard-Android/dp/B0054L8N7M
The problem I have is doing things like scrolling or clicking (touching) links seems like its going to be a pain since the N7 will no longer be in my hands. I will have to reach forward to click on something. Is this as big of a pain as it seems? Is the keyboard worth it?
Hi, after rooting my N7 I plugged in ( via OTG female USB to micro USB adapter ) a USB wireless adapter for my mouse and keyboard that came with my Revo computer. Both work together and the scroller on the mouse pulls the screen up and down on the N7. So cool.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, in fact you might as well get a mouse+keyboard combo with one wireless adapter and skip the bluetooth.
I have a physical logitech keyboard and it's great for typing up a paper and it's better to get a usb instead of blue tooth uses less battery

[Q] Multi-purpose OTG?

I'M thinking about getting a nexus 7. Question about it's USB OTG capability: Can it connect to multiple things at once through a USB host? I am thinking the ultimate portable workplace would be a portable keyboard, mouse, a microSD reader, and a charging cable all coming from a single host. Is Android at the point where this sort of thing is possible yet?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
No, currently you can connect to 1 slave usb device, maybe 2 with the use of an Y splitter cable, if at that. Am not sure if it's a software or hardware limitation.

With usb otg cable pluged in usb hub you can connect more devices.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN5_kJjKT5o.
You should know though that while using USB OTG (if i recall correctly) you are not able to charge the N7 at the same time. It is either one or the other.
While using OTG can charging if flash patched kernel.

Thats what I am gonna xo, as soon as my y- cable arrives.
I'm thinking of getting a Bluetooth keyboard
