[Q] Are your signal bars blue? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Before I take the time to wipe my phone and load the stock odin image on it, I wanted to check with other AT&T Note 3 users...
Are your signal bars (wifi or mobile) blue?
I know that in the past, blue bars are supposed to mean that you are communicating with the Google servers, but in my case, everything is working fine (sync, voice, email, etc.) but my signal bars are white/grey, so I was wanting to make sure if they were still supposed to be blue, or was this something new AT&T is doing for the Note 3.
I have NOT rooted or anything else. Phone is completely stock. The bars just never went blue during/after setup of the phone out of the box. I've tried with wifi off also, and have great signals. My LTE speeds are awesome. And like I said, everything seems to be working as it should, except for the blue signal bars showing up.
Yes, I have rebooted...airplane mode...different cities...etc. Still white bars.
If someone confirms that the bars should still be blue with the Note 3, then I am just going to wipe the phone and start over from scratch and see what happens when I setup the phone again.
Thanks.

I've had the S3, S4, and now Note 3 and all of the mobile signal bars have been white. The WiFi signal bars are white, but I have the in/out data indicators turned off, so I cannot comment on what color they are.

Thanks for the reply. That is interesting. My previous phones, and two other current ones being used in the family are all blue signal bars as soon as they connect to the Google Servers, so that is kind of what I was expecting to see happen on the Note 3.
I wish this one was showed blue. It lets me know that I have a good connection with Google, mainly just out of habit of expecting it now.
Does anyone know of an app that will show you the Google server connection status with a widget, in place of the blue signal bars?

[Q] Lost data connection

I have CM 7.1 stable. I had this problem before with stock 2.2 and 2.3
Phone will just lose connection in an area with known good signal - I'm in NYC.
Sometimes my bars and the 3G/H icon go white instead of green, sometimes the 3G/H icon disappears along with the "AT&T" on the lock screen, while I still have 4 bars (although white).
In either situation, I miss calls and texts, and can't dial out, can't dial voicemail.
I'll turn on / off airplane mode which sometimes works, other times I have to reboot.
I returned my first captivate some time ago and got a newer one. I was also given a new SIM card.
Is there any solution to this? Are there any ROMs which are known to address this problem?

I'm not the most Android savvy person, but this sounds like a modem issue. You can refer to this map and pick the model that best suits your area.

Eh, the site / map you suggested recommends the JL3 or JK4 - I am using JL3 so I am a bit doubtful on this as a solution.
Anyone else?

Odd signal strength notification symbol

The cropped screenshots show an odd 'home' shaped symbol with clouds over it on the phone signal strength indicator in the notification bar next to the battery. It blinks kind irregularly every second or so. It is always blue while the signal strength stays mostly grey. This happened after I applied the .232 ICS update going from .905. I am not roaming, all radios work fine, phone works fine. I haven't found the symbol on any list of ICS symbols and icons. Anyone have a clue what it is or how to get rid of it?
You're not using any custom roms? That's the first that i've ever seen that symbol and I go thru 3g and 4g symbols a lot since i commute between towns.
Likewise... I even did some googling for you... I came up with squat! I've never seen this symbol before and now I'm going to be up all night over it... THANKS! Could it be something special with your celltower in your area, or does it do this everywhere you go?
Could it be when you select home or automatic in the data /roaming preferences that's what pops up? Lemme change mine and see what happens
Edit. I guess that option was on my old 3g incredible.

Reported elsewhere as well (Droid Forum). I upgraded to the leaked 232 as well and do not have this symbol.

It is worth noting that the preference you mention was available in Gingerbread, not in ICS. If the setting was active before upgrading to ICS, who knows what would happen?
That is a connected to a femtocell notification. Ie Verizon network extender.

That is correct, sir! I figured it out last night. Away from home the symbol goes away, and back to home it returns. I have had a Verizon network extender for two years due to virtually no signal at home. It is the older model with just phone signal booster, not data as the new ones also so. Thank goodness, I was going nuts trying to figure out what was going on or what I had done wrong going to the .232 ICS leak.

Are you sure that it is not the same level? Don't be fooled by the bar looking different, remember that it might show 2 bars of LTE but that could still be better than 5 bars of H+ (as an example).
So if you used to get 5 bars of 3G but your now getting 2 bars of H or H+ then you are better off even though its less bars.
Please do not take this as me treating you as if you are stupid, I am not, I have come across a lot of people recently who thought the same, and it turned out to just be a different type of signal.
fixed
okk i just flashed 1.29.401.12 Radio and it's back to normal.
i found it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2245615

So if I have 5 bars when set to "GSM" only but 2-3 when set to "GSM/CDMA" .. that's as good?
I'm being serious btw, I normally set mine to just GSM as I seemed to have more signal but if there isn't any point then I won't bother lol ..I'm in the UK btw and on a network that doesn't support LTE (I think)

You can confirm the 'type' of signal you are getting at any time in the menu > settings > about part of the phone.
Your phone will automatically switch to whatever the best signal is available at any time, you don't really need to change your GSM/WCDMA settings, unless you really want to force it away from 3G connections (again this does not mean you have to have data turned on).
Cool, I'm not too fussed about what data type it uses as I rarely have data turned on, I just naturally assumed that by switching it from GSM'CDMA Auto to just GSM, meant that I'd have better reception, being that the signal bars went from 2/5 to 5/5 ... You learn something new everyday lol
EDIT: I checked my signal, and I mean my reception, not the data connection type, when switched between GSM/WCDMA Auto and GSM Only and there is a huge difference. I found this guide:
dB Signal - A basic guide
-50 to -60 (very strong, near a cell tower)
-60 to -70 (extremely good, rare)
-80 to -85 (normal downtown)
-90 to -95 (getting on the weak side)
-95 to -98 (weak, dropping calls)
-98 to -100 (bad, hard to stay connected)
-100+ (basically no usable signal)
When I set my phone to GSM Only I hover around -70, which is good, when I switch to GSM/WCDMA Auto it is a different story. I know it changes and finds the best signal, which I might add drains more battery on an already power hungry beast, but I was hovering at -100 which is terrible and often calls were dropping or people were saying it was engaged when infact I hadn't used it.
It's clear to me that in my case, GSM Only is the far better option if I actually want to use my phone to make calls ... Data speeds I'm not arsed about so EDGE is just fine with me.

Brand new T-Mobile Nexus 6 Lte not connecting

I have a brand new Nexus 6 64 Gb from T-mobile I just got. I had been on At&t with a different Nexus 6 so I know the phone inside and out. I was testing the phone and noticed the my wives new Lg g2 get perfect reception in my house. My Nexus get Zero bars Lte to 2. Mostly zero. Also I know when you make calls its over Hspa, but after I make a call it does not go back to Lte. Even if I browse the web or do speed test it stays on HSPA for 10+ mins or until I reboot the phone. It does this every time not just once in a while. Several times I have run speed test it has said no network even with 3 bars Lte. I did a lot of searching here and many people have issues with the Nexus 6 and T-mobile.
What do you guys think? Bad phone? T-mobile is sending out a new one just in case.
if you are using data, it wont swich back to lte until you have no data flowing. while you ate using data, it wont switch, period. and the bars dont really matter, as they don't really show your connection. some companies even add extra bars just so the connection looks better. if you want to see your real connection, open your main settings, go to about phone, status, sim status, signal strength.

I checked my wives phone. In the same spot I will have -115 and she will be at -102. Even right now I am at -91 and dont have full bars. Also after I hang up I can leave it there doing nothing but the screen on, it wont switch back to lte. Even doing Airplane mode on\off should kick lte back on and it does not.

airplane mode then back isnt supposed to kick it back to lte. for me it takes anywhere from seconds to 3-4 minutes. but that would also depend on the quality of lte signal in your area.

Any way to replace signal bars with signal strength in dbm?

Like the title says, I'm looking for a solution on the Nexus 6 to get rid of the useless signal bars and have signal strength in dbm. Sadly I can't seem to find any solutions for this.
AOKP stopped developing and they are the only mainstream rom that ever had signal strength in dbm and displayed the signal type as well.
Cyanogenmod had dbm in the past but it never displayed 2g, 3g, or LTE/4g so you never knew what you were on, and they dropped that in Lollipop anyway.
Xblast Tools had this feature, but it never seemed to work on any KitKat roms right, I know I had it on some roms working at some point, but whenever dbm went weaker than -115 dbm it would display 0 or some weird number depending on the rom, so it didn't really work so well.
If anyone has any ideas, I'm open to suggestions, at this point I think editing the systemui.apk might be my only option since no one seems to have anything developed, but I wouldn't even know where to begin there.
I don't suppose anyone is working on this as a feature for an xposed module? It's the one thing I've felt gravity box was really missing.
I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure cataclysm rom has it

You can install the SignalCheck Pro app. It shows dBm as well as cellular band in a small icon in the notifications bar.

Unfortunately Cataclysm on 6.0 on the Nexus 6 doesn't seem to. I checked a video that goes through settings and their thread and I think when I had a nexus 6 a bit over a month ago, I tried that one and it didn't have that feature. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I know but then I always have a notification, it displays this squished text, and I still have signal bars, plus I have no way of knowing if the app is draining battery running all the time checking the current signal strength. I really just want to replace the signal bars the way I was able to do in every version of android until kitkat/lollipop when the feature started to disappear.
Maybe I'm wrong but I thought pure nexus had something like that. It's listed as network traffic meter options on the OP thread
Have you tried this? Quick glance at the thread looks like mixed results, but some Nexus devices and someone said it works on MM. But perhaps it works?
Ditto
Started looking for the same today as the cell and wifi icons are terrible. I'd even be happy without the signal strength text and to just have some bars and get rid of that triangle. I came from a note 3 and it at least had bars in the triangle instead of a solid block with like 3 levels of fill for the strength.
