I am currently in my residency, and since I started I have been having an issue with multiple devices (latest nexus 7, galaxy nexus, and now moto x). Whenever I'm at a hospital and on their wifi I don't receive notifications such as email. Sms text goes through, but not mms. As soo as I get off wifi the notifications flood in. If I manually refresh Gmail while on their wifi it comes through. I called IT and the guy ha s the same issue, but said that nobody knows of anything that would be causing it. Basically no help. Any ideas? I'm at a loss and it's pretty frustrating. I'm on stock software on all devices.

SMS "text" mesages are a SS#7 protocol, meaning they are sent and received through the "telephone" network's switch. They don't need internet connectivity.
Doesn't fix your problem, but it explains why your getting one and not the other.
Also work at a hospital. Hospital wifis are notoriously unreliable, and for one reason or another hospitals also have the worst reception for cell signals. The terrible wifi receptions are possibly related to that there are way too many electronics/wireless signals floating around (all the computer terminals, monitors, IV pumps, pyxis, everything). My advice, well, ask the nurses and doctors on your unit to see which service work the best, and switch to that and forget about the wifi (for example, on my floor, T-Mo works the best....). I know I'm gonna get hate for saying this, but if an iPhone works the best, switch to that. However, from my personal experience, all the coworkers with iPhone still get really ****ty reception. So yeah, take a survey, and get a new service, especially if you are gonna be at the hospital for a while.
Used to work as a Network Technician at rather large hospitals in town. Our WiFi coverage was actually very, very good. I did experience issues sometimes with certain services on my phone while connected to it but it's because of the firewalls and content filtering that you will find in place on many large networks. My advice is to skip the "IT guy" and find the actual network engineering group and ask them. They'd be the ones who should know.
If he's getting smaller messages real-time in the hospital, his carrier and his connection to the cell towers are fine.
My uneducated guess based on the info given is that this is an issue with the hospital routing their wifi traffic.

Correct. The signal is just fine. No problems whatsoever. I know it's routing. The problem is that IOS users don't have the issue. I'm only seeing it on Android.

I keep getting disconnected on gtalk. So I recieve mails that someone wrote me.
Really annoying.
Now running a rooted frf91 rom, with radio 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7, but have had this problem for six weeks, with different roms and radios...
It seems to be happening randomly, maybe when it switches between 3g/no 3g reception, but I'm not sure of that. It also seems to be turning of 3g even though I'm in an area with good reception.
Anybody have a clue?
I'm having the same issue and it seems to be worse when I have wifi enabled. Even with wifi set to be always on the connection goes out multiple times a day. I've found that leaving phone on 3G has given me better connectivity for gtalk.

One question. Are you using N1 by AT&T?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
no, I'm in Denmark, on Telenor
I don't think this has anything to do with your rom, radio, or even the N1 for that matter. I have had 3 HTC phones both rooted and non-rooted (G1, N1, MT3GS) and everyone of them go in and out of connectivity on gtalk. It may be a reception issue but I think t has more to do with how the app is made. Just my 2 cents.
Nah, cause my gf on desire, my friend on hero, and myself earlier on magic didn't have the same problems... :/
And also, as I said; I suspect it might be because the 3g falls out. Even though I stay stationary, the 3g switches over to edge... or even somethimes gprs. And I live downtown copenhagen, good reception on other phones.
I have the same problem, but it is only when I leave my WiFi area into 3g. It just won't reconnect until I manually sign in. But from that point forward it stays connected all day with no issues.
Guys,
Don't know if I'm the only person with this problem but its irritating me more ever day and making me hate this marvellous device.
I have three wifi access points in my house connected to the same switch, long house with 3-4' thick granite walls so need this to get coverage.
Whenever I connect to wifi and move to a stronger wifi area on the same network the phone insists on staying connected to the weaker signal even if there are 'no bars' and hardly any signal strength.
I'm guessing this is making the radio work harder hence lowering battery life, plus reducing data speeds; why doesn't it automatically switch to the stronger signal like my blackberry does?

Same thing happens to me. I always feel like throwing it against a wall when it does that because in have to go into the settings and manually change it. I haven't found a setting to connect automatically to a stronger signal yet though.

Odd... there were answers to this question in this thread yesterday!?!
To recap, in case anyone else is looking for solutions, three apps were recommended: Best Wifi, Wifi Switcher, and Wifi Jumper... all available on Google Play. I chose and experimented with Best Wifi last night on both my Note and my Xoom. Worked great in limited testing. My setup is 3 Ubiquity routers, the two most distant cabled directly to the primary (which is cabled directly to the gateway). All 3 broadcast the same SSID and use the same security protocols, so moving around with mobile equipment is almost transparent and so setup of new, fixed devices is identical regardless of location. This setup has worked well for my application.
got the same problem with my repeaters :/
What are your thoughts?
Network connections don't replace the need and use of a Cell Phone. At least not for me. I need reliable voice and text... Network access is iffy many times. If you travel network access with a Hotspot is even more iffy.
I have a 4G Hotspot, Nexus 7 and HTC Rezound.
Not everywhere I go has wifi sadly :/ But I wouldn't mind using a Nexus 7 with Google Voice + Groove IP
I have thought often about it. But not sure how much data a phone call would consume.
Nope, never really considered it. I have my Rezound rooted so I just tether and use my unlimited 4G

If you care not about being reachable all of the time then I guess it would be an alternative...
What are MIFIs like these days? Its been a while since I last used one but I used to hate how long it would take to establish a connection to the Internet what with the time for the MIFI to connect and then the MIFI to device handshake.
There is something to be said for the convenience of having a dedicated connection to the Internet on a tablet rather than having to rely on hot spots. Even tethering has its downsides in terms of connection times and battery drain etc.

I've considered it, as well. However, I like buying new phones and messing with them. Also, too many times I've tried to call people that have Google Voice and it takes too long to make contact with them.
A number of people have been having issues with wifi, myself included. I keep going over my monthly data restriction. I want to know if this is affecting everyone or only a subset of people. If it's the latter, I'll call customer service and get a replacement.

Can you describe the issue a little more? Try testing your connection with Aruba Utilities.

don't know what the OPs issues are, but I just got the Moto X yesterday and it is not liking my home wifi. Every other wifi I've been on today (at work) has worked great. At home it connects to my router and shows great signal but nothing internet related will load. Everynow and then it will work only to stop working randomly. I have comcast with their ARRIS gateway.
All my other devices at home (roku, dish DVRs, iphone, ipad, GNex, laptops) work fine.
If you have a dual band router, set the frequency settings to either 2.4 or 5ghz instead of auto. I initially had inconsistent Wi-Fi functionality until I did this, now it seems to be fine. I have an Asus ac56u.

Just like tabbibus said, it shows great signal and has no problem quickly connecting, but nothing loads 3/4ths of the time. For example, I ran speedtest and it stopped partway through the upload even though it was still connected. I can't change router settings because I rely on college wifi.
So it seems like half get the issue and half don't?

The frequency setting is in your advanced Wi-Fi settings on your phone. Set it to 2.4 instead of auto and see if that helps.

That didn't work.
I was on the phone with a T-Mobile rep yesterday in regards to the weak signal in my home. I never had issues with T-Mobile and signal strength, but it has gotten pretty bad around my home, where I usually am only able to get two bars of strength around my home, three when I am lucky.
I brought this all up w/ T-Mobile, they said there has been no service changes around my area, but the representative recommended that we use WiFi Calling in areas it is available.
I know this service is free, but I never bothered trying it, does it really work when dealing with poor signal strength? Does it impact battery life by any ways? Also, does it cause any sort of delay when calling people? And lastly, I'd imagine this includes texting via WiFi, correct?
If it is all as good as it sounds, I might go ahead with it, if not, I'll just ask T-Mobile about some sort of signal booster around my home.
Thanks!
Wifi calling can fix the poor range problem. You connect to Wifi and calls go through it instead of the GSM network. It works with texting. Just go ahead and try it. You don't have to pay any extra money for it. If you wanted a signal booster, I think you have to pay for it.
I have been using it for the past few days since posting it, and it seems just fine!
Let's say I use this option and walk out of WiFi signal, would my call automatically get disconnected? Also, does HD voice work on this?

Yes, if you walk out of range of wifi, your call will disconnect. Also, one thing to note is that it cannot be used on custom roms, however, with the release of this feature on this Nexus 6, we should see it on AOSP/CM in a few months. With google's project FI, this feature could be worked on by google and improve. As for HD voice, I'm pretty sure it works.
Actually, you CAN use Wi-Fi calling on custom ROMs, as long as the ROM developer didn't mess with it's functionality. (Granted, you most likely limited to ROMs that aren't drastically altered/customized, but at least they will be de-bloated...) I had an S4 with a custom ROM and I used Wi-Fi calling frequently--just have to check to make sure it's available.
I see people are still responding here - I have been using WiFi calling for about a couple of months now, it has been working perfectly fine. I had some random instances of dropped calls, I called T-Mobile and asked them about the issue, they told me it was related with my router, they went ahead and sent me a special router that is built for WiFi Calling (To be honest, I have no idea what the hardware capabilities on the router is, but it sure as hell beats the $20 Router I bought 5 years ago )
That being said, WiFi calling has been amazing for me, no more issues. Text messages are sent, calls are received, and everything works. It is a beauty of a function.
The only complaint I have is that sometimes if I hop in my car, drive away and am still on a call, the call will get disconnected (I now just avoid making calls while I am leaving my house). Another issue is that when I connect to any WiFi network, whether at a mall or a friends house, I sometimes do face issues as there may be some sort of hardware capabilities needed in order for the feature to work properly.
Hope that helps for people considering WiFi calling!
