[SOLVED] How do I root Xperia Z1 on .257 firmware - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to root my Xperia Z1 if I'm on .257 firmware?
Will vRoot, 360 Root or Kingo Root be able to root my phone on .257 firmware?
Do I have to downgrade to .534 to be able to root the phone?
How do I downgrade to .534?
Will I lose all my data if I downgrade to .534?
Thanks in advance!

Download .ftf file for .534 firmware [LINK]
Downgrade to .534 firmware with Flashtool (and untick wipe data/cache/appslog so that you can keep all your data) [GUIDE]
Use vRoot, 360 Root or Kingo App ROOT to root your phone [GUIDE]
After rooting you should restart the phone 2 times
Now you should get a notification that there's an available OTA update to .257
If you don't get the notification, go to the Update Center app on your Z1 (I think the icon for it is a blue circle with two arrows) and refresh to get the update notification
Just install the update through your phone (not through PC) and the root will still be there
WARNING: If you don't get the notification for .257 update, then you will only be able to update through PCCompanion but that way you will lose the root priviledges.
If that way doesn't work for you, you can also use gregbradley's way to root your .257 [GUIDE]

It's the proper answer though, everything has been asked tons of times already and is explained just about as often. If people don't want to put at least some effort in searching and reading they can hardly expect others to put effort in them.

True, but if you know the answer right away, it's nice to give a link for example. And ask op to close the thread.

Sorry, but I replied to various forms of this question a dozen times yesterday in the forums and more in PM's. The information is out there in lots of threads and I don't want to add to the clutter which makes it hard to sift through. It would be like hiding a needle in a pile of needles.
To closed thread report it to the mods via the orange triangle in the top right of the posts.

If you look in v android development there is an unsecure kernel, but this is for older firmware, maybe it works
Edit: you must unlock bootloader for custom kernel, i do not think bin4ry method works for newer firmwares

So right now, we have no root access without unlocking the bootloader.
Hopefully the genius developers will come up with something soon. A little bothered by the bloatware from my provider.

Hi funiewski,
I have tried rooting by flashing that kernel but I don't seems to get root when I check with the root checker app. Would you be able to advise on this? I would have posted in that thread but apparently I don't have enough post count.

Serious: I'm getting a V soon and is the bloatware that bad?

There may be a way to root without unlocked bootloader
Try this well-known way of rooting Xperia AX in Japan.
I guess it's also possible for V to root.
1. Here is a Xperia VL's old rom and you can flash this kernel.sin and system.sin with V's loader.sin.
I can't post the link, but you can find it in uploaded.net. The ID is 3gvvv3w6.
2. Then, Root.
3. Create /data/local.prop (ro.kernel.qemu=1).
4. Flash V's system.sin without wiping.
5. Replace ric, install Busybox and Superuser.
6. Flash V's kernel.sin without wiping.
7. Do Factory data reset to easily delete unnecessary apps.

after downgrade you can also use CWM to flashing anything you like. Flashing XperimenT 1.7.1 is the best way after you root your device.

Rooting won't brick your phone. And you can have root on stock
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
You can root and stay on stock ROM no need to change to another ROM. Also rooting .257 firmware is not yet supported. Morever I read somewhere that Kingo and Vroot are under investigation for installing tracking malware.

No rooting does not affect the Camera. Only unlocking Bootloader will mess up the camera.
Just tried vroot for my Z1 (6903...xx257 firmware) and it doesnt work

It is impossible to directly root that FW,
Downgrade to .534, root and then upgrade OTA

There are no problems because you immediately upgrade to .257 OTA and the problems go.
You downgrade to the older version and are on it for as long as it takes to root (2-3 minutes) during that time the camera does work (But you can fix it if you want by clearing the data in the camera common app) but as soon as you upgrade it works again...
Do this my friend i did it and it work for me ...

Learn before doing atleast, so we don't get fifty new threads about generic issues.
This is a development forum, and it would be nice if it's not overly cluttered with useless threads all the time.
Also the mods gets a break aswell
I do not mean to be rude, but people who ask questions, which the answer to, lies a couple clicks away, generally don't want to bother themselves with reading.
This is a shame, because the great developers on here are excellent at writing extensively about how to do things, and what you should and should not do.
