I picked up my Moto X two days ago and I've been playing around with it. I could have sworn I was scanning NFC tags with the phone on sleep when I was first playing around with it. Am I just crazy and imagining it all or did I somehow break that functionality? I've done a bit of Googling and it looks like on other phones, you have to wake the phone in order to scan an NFC tag.

NFC does not function while the phone is asleep for security reasons.

I think it can scan the Motorola skip tags while asleep, but not regular tags. I'm not 100% sure about the skip though.

It can't. The official Moto skip (the covered one, not the standard tags) has a magnet that wakes the device. This causes the NFC service to start and the polling loop to start. At this point the NFC tag is read as if it were any other tag. You can recreate this with a strong enough magnet and a normal tag.
If you root and install xposed framework, gravity box... It will allow NFC with screen off.

Are you using it? If so, have you found that NFC constantly polling with the screen off is significantly draining your battery?
I am using it, no it doesn't drain.

I started using this for my night table when charging at night. I'm not too sure how it would do with battery life if you use it as a watchface but I'm planning on testing it.
It has great brightness options. You can dim it for night use by swiping gently down or raise the brightness by swiping up. The little details in the lighting are nice. When you dim the brightness you see the shadows of the digits and days of the week. The disappear when you fully brighten it.

I agree, that will probably be a problem.
I had a Galaxy S3 that burned in badly after leaving it lit all night for a few months on a nightstand.

I was wondering about this too. My wife's phone which is a fairly recent moto model had terrible burn-in just from basic use. You can see her homescreen apps pretty clearly.

I'm getting some fairly significant battery drain from something called "Modality Service." It probably wouldn't annoy me so much if I had any clue what it was. Anyone seeing anything similar? Any idea what it is? My searches on the matter are coming up empty.

On and off through the day.
Interestingly "Modality Service" hasn't shown up at all today, with 7.5 hrs on battery. It's pretty intense when it does though, and I'm still deeply curious.
I saw this on someone's screen shot the other day, googled it and it didn't return anything related to it.
I think the use who posted had data disabled for most of the battery cycle, maybe it has to do with that? Not sure though

I have the same issue. I noticed it yesterday, I had very low usage and it was the top battery user. I clicked on it and it said it used GPS for the whole time my phone was on but I have GPS off, so that was odd. Also I checked into BatteryStats+ and it didn't even have it using my battery. It appears it isn't affecting my battery life because my CPU usage was only about 2s. I have no idea what it is though. I posted this on G+ and a guy replied saying he was on the phone with Motorola multiple times and ended up getting a replacement. I'd prefer not to go that route...
I too just noticed this last night and today. Last night it was showing using 48% of the battery and today using 38%. I found the service and force closed it. Not sure what it does or is.
Do you all have moto assist activated. It's only an issue for me when moto assist is trying to determine if I am driving. If I disable the driving portion, modality service never appears

I recently rooted, now unrooted, my phone and went to get gravity box to customize my stoxk ROM. After doing everything with the framework and reboots, I went to change some settings around. After 20 mins or so I got fed up with it b/c only a handful of stuff would work. Wanted to know if this is a common problem, if I missed a step, and how can I fix this.
Pretty simple, won't work as advertised if you're not rooted, or an I missing something?

When I tried this I was rooted, but after it not working right I un rooted my phone
Not everything will work because most modules are aimed specifically for AOSP ROM's. Meaning pure Vanilla like the Nexus phones have. So naturally not everything will work on other phones because the framework is different.
You have to download more specific modules to have a higher chance of stuff working like G2 Xposed or G2 Settings. Even then everything will not work as it's mainly made for the G2.
Is there anything good for the flex? I have the G2 xposed and nothing is cool really.
Sent from my LG-LS995 using XDA Free mobile app
I use mainly G2 Settings to have some statusbar tweaks such as centered clock and hide various icons.
I also use Blurred System UI for a nice notification pull down.

Has anyone else seen this? It doesn't seem to have any specific app it just happens randomly.

That's a toast notification and not one that's standard in Android. If you have any sort of task killer app or cache cleaning app I would look at that as the first culprit.

What is a toast notification? I have no task killers installed and never have.
It just refers to the style of notification you're seeing. Toast notifications are popups that are not actionable and not persistent.
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/notifiers/toasts.html
Unfortunately there's no easy way to determine what is generating the toast notification unless you are rooted. Some people have reported that the M-Go app produces these notifications. Regardless, it's not part of stock Android and it is being generated by some app that you have installed.
I do have the MGO app uninstall it for now to see what happens. Thanks for the info.
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk
I don't want to talk to you early but I think uninstalling MGO fixed that issue. I haven't had that error since I removed it.
Thank you for the suggestion.
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk
has now been a full day without the M-Go app and no errors. Bettery also has been much better without that app installed.
TY again for the info
I'm glad this worked for you. What does MGo do anyway?

Video service that took over the service Samsung had. Only use it now because I had some credit from some titles that did not transfer from Samsung. I have about $40 credit. Will use it till I am out of credit. It supports Chromecast too.
Have not reinstalled it and error has been gone since. Phone battery is better without it too.

Hello guys I've been using several password protection apps for a while now, but I've read somewhere that they are draining the battery a lot faster, which is true is some cases since I have noticed that my battery "dies" faster with the apps (I'm only using 1 app at the time)...
My question is, if I use an Xposed module, do you think that is better? Or should I just continue using a password protection app from playstore?
Also if you recommend using a Xposed module instead, which one is the best?
I use Maxlock. Never was a fan of app locks till I gave this a shot. ?

This is opening Xposed Installer. If you don't enter the password, it's impossible to get into the app by clicking back or anything else like some apps.

I like ProtectedApps. Everything else I tried (though I never attempted MaxLock) allow me to kill the top app (locker) and skip into the (now no longer) locked app

but u can delete app from data partion. either by root explorer or by aroma file manager through recovery. But once I was using maxlock xposed I set a knock code and enable the hide line option and then I was unable to unlock any app. I dont know why though I was using the correct pattern. So I had to delete it using aroma 'cause I locked every app. So that's the drawback i.e missing reset feature. So if u want to use xposed lock apps then be cautious and once research urself on the mentioned facts, though their r many xposed app for locking. [emoji6] [emoji6]
