KitKat and ad blocking - Nexus 4 General

AdFree doesn't seem to work anyone on Kit Kat. It looks like "/etc/hosts" is still there, so maybe it's just the app. Besides manual copy paste into the hosts file, I was curious if anyone was using a working ad block app in Kit Kat.

Worked like a charm for me on the PA 4.4 version.
The version from kalo has built in ad block, so maybe you can flash that ram if you cant seem to get it to work.

Adaway worked for me on both N5 port and KK build by franco.

For anyone else that wants AdAway: download here.

Adaway failed for me at first during the apply process. Using root explorer I browsed to the system/etc/host file and set the permissions readable and writable. Retried adaway with success.

If you're on Chome and using the Reduce Data Usage feature, it will show ads even if you used an Ad blocker because the information goes through Google servers first for the compression then sends it to your phone.
The apps shouldn't show ads though.

Ad Away works fine for me. Sometimes when I try to update the host file the app fails but after another attempt it usually works.

Hi Guys,
It doesn't work for me. I am on 4.4 Nexus 4. I use AdFree and I can see it has replaced the host files but still I am getting the ads. Not only in Chrome but in other apps too. I tried to manually copy host files from here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098 to the /etc/ folder. but still ads are there. AdFree used to work perfectly for me on 4.3. Any suggestions.. Thanks

Adfree works fine for me on 4.4 stock rooted, at least ad far as copying the hosts file goes. However, something in kit Kat is different and not all websites ads are blocked now.

Also installed firefox to check, if that made any difference. Strangely no ads on firefox. However, there are adverts present using Google chrome and some of the free apps that I installed via play store. Is it possible that android is by passing hosts file for chrome and other apps? BTW on my chrome there is no data reduction option present. I can only see "preload web pages" option, which I tried turning off and on but didn't make any difference.

OP asked how we'd go about this if we aren't rooted. Curious about this as well.
You can do it via the play store through the webpage.
Says i have hangouts installed but its not in my app tray..when i hit open from the play market hangout app page it opens Talk
Same thing happened to me...just install it from the play.google.com site as @robfactory said above. Fixed.

Hate to say it bud, but step one for anything XDA, is root your phone .
Stay on the stock ROM if you want (god knows why, less battery life, slower phone, less secure phone, still the same phone and functionality, but that is your choice to stay on the ROM it came with), but you should add root capabilities. You can stay on the same ROM, only downside is I'm pretty sure there is no way to stay with your current setup, HTC Dev unlock WILL wipe your existing settings, widgets, profiles, apps, etc. But you can flash just the small root package and modify nothing that the phone came with originally. Rooting your phone is required here at XDA (lol not really, I just say that). Anyway, sorry I don't have anything useful to say about the app, but trust me... You want root Besides, you can deny root access to anything. Who is SYSTEM anyway? Why does he have all the powers and I haz so little?
P.S.
Do it.

I believe the update was pushed today, I saw it in play store as the actual update and it worked fine for me. I got the error message in the previous post once, but restarting the app fixed it. I do get my contact list disappearing quite often.
So far I feel the contact list could use some managing, I miss seeing my talk list and seeing who's online but I suppose I could try it out some more. There is a decent amount of emoticons added, but everything feels very basic and minimalistic. Not quite what I was expecting, could be because it's early on.
All in all, still feels like a beta.

Stock Kit Kat 4.4.2 Issues on Sprint S4

I'm on stock Kit Kat for my sprint S4. I noticed that now when I wirelessly charge my phone it gets extremely hot. Also one it gets to 94% it stops charging. Not sure of it stops due to heat or the new software doesn't like to do wireless charging. I have an aftermarket qi charger and peice for my phone. They worked perfect until I updated last week . Is anyone else having this problem. The other thing I noticed is Google hangouts emoticons when entered in a chat come out looking diffrent. Looks like Samsung emoticons. I checked this on my wife's note 3 after updating to stock kit Kat and the emoticon icon disappeared. So not sure if this is another issue with it may and Samsung phones.

This is not an issue, it is a new security policy implemented by Google in Kit Kat. You can add a line to platform.xml and return functionality. But it is not a bug, Google did it on purpose.

You need to go to platform.xml in the system/etc/permissions folder with root explorer. Open it with a text editor. Look for the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission line and add this line under the 2 permissions that are already listed. Follow the same formatting as the other permissions.
Add this: <group gid="media_rw" />
Save and exit, then reboot your phone. It's a good idea to back up the file before editing which root explorer should automatically do for you. Good luck.

I have checked several times, and my sprint galaxy s4 is "up to date" but im still on JB. Could this be due too the fact that i bricked my phone and had to use odin on my pc to basically wipe everything including root? But i dont see that being the problem since i stayed on stock while i was rooted. I just rooted for the hotspot mod for mk2
In find that Samsung wires for charger breaks fast..I change both my wife wire to another and works fine...KitKat update the best..no issues except for transition animation bug is still there.. After a few times opening camera it defaults back to 0 when I had it set to .5...great battery snappier less ram..consumption...my phone doesn't get as hot anymore...

G Flex WIFI Tether

This is not my app I had nothing to do with the development of this app. I simply found this a couple years ago and it used to work on my first RAZR and RAZR HD. So I figured what the hell let's try it. I'm on T-Mobile and have 2.5 gigs of wifi tether included in my account. I installed this and turned it on. And it works. I was and still am at 2.2 gigs used since I installed it and my son has been playing Forza Horizons thru XBox live on his 360. And the T-Mobile account app does not register any extra data used on the WiFi tether section. The Xbox even updated and the game did an update also.

Installed perfectly pushing apks to system but that one feature was gone, I took pics in a room lit only by a tv and the hacked cam was actually visible, smooth, no stutter or blur. While the uhd kept trying to focus and if you read the mods op statement he upped all the fps and etcetera so that makes since. Hell I'm thinking bout going back to it now haha

This part confuses me a little:
If you do not have a custom recovery on your device,
Extract the downloaded ZIP and copy the APK to phone.
Open Root Browser and go to system/app.
Find CameraApp.apk and CameraApp.odex and add a .bak extension to both of them.
Now copy the new CameraApp.apk to system/app folder. -
Here do we remove the .bak from the files we just copied over or leave it as is?
Click to collapse
Press and hold CameraApp.apk and select Permissions from the list of options.
Now set the permission to rw-r–r– (0644). For more details, read this guide.
Then reboot the phone.
When your LG boots up, you would be able to use the modded camera app on your phone.
leave them as is, in case you need to restore them if the replacement files arent working properly for you
the new files will have the extensions .apk, and .odex when you copy them over

I didn't have any issue just didn't stick with my laptop. carriers and manufactories have gotten smart. especially due to the amount of people that are modding their phones these days. just changing the "tether dun" or "tether provisioning". Now we have to deal with upsell URLs. That's when on their end they notice URLs coming thru our data that are not the same format/ signature that mobile devices use. and therefore our WiFi data usage may still increase. well there's a way around that too. It doesn't stick through boot either. But it will mask said URLs and prevent " up sell". From your phones dailpad dial 3845#*???# put in the 3 numbers of your variant. like mine is a d959 so I dial 3845#*959# once in the hidden service menu click settings then scroll down to "upsell URL" click it and select the option "TMUS hastetheringOPTIIN". AND DONT FORGET THE OTHER HACK CHANGing the 1 to a zero on the tethering in sqlite editor .

I prefer using https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway ... AdFree is nice but blocks a lot of the Slickdeals links for me, yeah theres whitelisting but Slickdeals has a lot of redirecting links whereas AdAway is less aggressive on that part and gets most of the ads.
I see @simms22 finally got his N6

Out of curiosity, can you run an adblocker (like adaway), have it modify the hostfile, then unroot and still have ads blocked? Or do you need to keep root for the changes to remain in effect?

AD blocker apps ?

Hello i currently root my mxpe 6.0.1 and im using adaway and minminguard but the ads on google chrome are killing me
any suggestion on how to remove them ?
Adaway uses sources like mvps, which block big known ad sources.
You would have to get the source for the ad and report it to one of the adaway blocking services like mvps.
Or
Use greasemonkey for chrome and block that way.
https://www.google.com/search?q=gre...9i57.8582j0j4&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8
Assuming you have adaway enabled, lol.
And after hosts file update, hard reboot or shutdown and bootup.
I use Adblock Plus it's a third party app but it works wonders.

I can't make it work on mine, it crashes on startup.
I use "Rbrowser" instead which has as well adblocker and is the only browser that does not have a scrolling lag on my MX Pure. Very happy with it.

Try TugaBrowser, it's based on Chromium and has a built-in adblocker.

I use AdAway but note that it sometimes causes issues. Blocks things like Google shopping links, coupons and promo code websites, redirects, even the eBay app would not work for me.

You can add the url base domain to your Adaway white list, such as:
ad.doubleclick.net
googleadservices.com
da.feedsportal.com
and others...
Use MOAAB, no need to install apps. Just flash
Sent from my XT1575 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I used to use AdAway but too often it would block legitimate sites I was trying to get to. I then started using the Adblock Plus browser which was good for a while but has really gone down hill lately.
I'm now using FireFox with the Adblock Plus extension and while it isn't perfect, it most closely suits my needs.
