Android Kitchen - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post. Correct me if it isn't.
My question is if anybody here has used the Kitchen on our device? Is it safe to use?
I have tried to cook a rom with it, but there are some points I'm a little confused about. One of them are the csc code that the kitchen makes a flashable zip out of.
Has someone here been through this?
Are there some things I should be especially aware of?

AK safe yes if instructions are followed
Does it work in I9305 sorry not a clue if it says I9305 is supported then yes .
CSC see csc/ modems thread .

This is where i am stuck:
"You can unzip this file and copy the contents of the 'system'
folder to your ROM's system folder."
In my ROM/system/app folder there already are some apk's with those names. Voicetalk.apk, VideoHub.apk, and MusicHub.apk are already there. The only difference is that the files i copy has a exec. picture on them, and that they are renamed with a "copy" at the end of the file name. The size is also different.
Don't know if i should keep both apk files or if i should delete one of them? In that case, which one of them should i delete?

It would be safer to rename them old...

wouldnt rename them old, just move the copys to another folder and then test the rom, if all seems good leave them out due to taking up space!

Could try it, but there is also an apk in there that doesn't have a copy but with the exec. picture in it. Is it safe to have exec. files in that folder?
EDIT: A little quote problems there lol..

Yeah, i'll look into that. Will have to install superuser later then. But all these apk's are apps? So ROM will work good without them?

backup your IMEI and your good, its really hard to brick this device(i had an old experimental one) the only way i did it was by odin, i renamed the recovery as the bootloader and regenrated the md5's then flashed... other then that id say its ALMOST impossibke for a noob...

Been thinking about buying a cheap one on ebay and try different stuff myself. One without imei or something.
I think i have 5 different backups of imei, one on my phone, one in dropbox, and on some different harddrives..lol.. Backed it up with qpst when i bought it. I've never had any use for it, but i've flashed my phone some hundred times i think. Been in bootloop a couple of times but that's all.
Yeah.. maybe i should go for it and give it a try. The only reason i use this method is because it's pretty hard to find a tool that will deodex on mac.

Kernel Manager

TeamWIN has now made their Kernel Manager app work with the XOOM. What it allows you to do, is flash kernels inside android. No more booting into fastboot, or even running update.zips.

Just downloaded and just what we need, it is awesome, will get the paid version as promised in the irc LOL

it didn't corrupt your kernel. Just manually push the BCM4329.ko file through adb.
or just to be safe just push everything again manually. That way you know everything was done right.

Download and run the one click root file, it will repatch with the kernel that comes in it or you can place the files from the latest kernel release into it. I think thats the best option for you if you are not comfortable using adb.

It could be an issue with the download. Find the file with astro or root explorer and delete it then redownload, or download to your computer and place it on the xoom and have the app install from the sd card instead of downloading it.
If it still doesnt work for you, just reflash the one click root and give it a day or two for the devs to update the app or something.
Hope everything works out for you

Well.... Uhhh.... Thats not something I tried myself. But I think it would be pretty easy... When you extract the root my xoom folder to your computer, open it up and find the kernel files... then replace them with the updated files from the 1.3.2 zip file. Just unzip the 1.3.2 folder and copy and paste.
Hope this helps
ive opend the rootmyxoom folder and i dont know where to put the contents from the zip

I dont have a current version of the one click root, but I would think to look inside either the wifi root folder or the tiamat folder (inside the rootmyxoom folder). Whichever one has the same files from the 1.3.2 folder, copy and paste them over to that folder inside the rootmyxoom folder and you should be golden.
ive looked thru them all , i dont see any files in any of those folders that look like the ones that come in the zip
open up the tiamit files in the root my xoom folder and replace with whatever kernel you want to use. I did this three times with tiamit 1.3.0, and .1 and .2. You can try to just replace the entire file or go in and replace the indiviual files from within the tiamit kernel folder. Be careful though if you replace the wrong files or mix them up could be bad results, usually just no wifi or bootloops.
Oh by the way i always did all this on a windows based computer that way the files look the same or similar

This works great, now if only there can be a similar app that installs themes
Wow, Kernel manager just solved my problem of flashing the new tiamat 1.4.0 kernel.
Was having issues in CWM, instead of pulling my hair out in testing it out via trial by error. Had a (status 0) error while flashing kernel in CWM.
It was resolved by using Kernel Manager!!!
Can't access link to download apk? Anyone have this problem?
Edit: got it downloaded

yeah i think only 1 app is there in data/app = gallery i think i removed that thinking that it was the gallery3d
i changed the launcher and a couple of things in the system/app
are there limitations of which apps that i could put there...
btw is it ok if i change the updater-script to update-script?
or i shouldnt have change that... the kitchen was requesting to change it
hey if you are only removing some apk's you dont need kitchen.. just unzip file.. take out what you want than re-zip and than Sign it! should be able to flash no problem

You should just do what LDrifta said if your still having problems.
OH and regarding the update-script, heres your answer straight from the op of the kitchen:
QUESTION: Why do I need to convert the ROM's updater-script to an update-script when using the kitchen?
The kitchen can only perform operations on an update-script. UpdateR-scripts are too complicated to check because there are so many combinations of parameters for every command and for different devices; plus they can be written in different formatting styles. Thus the kitchen converts them to update-script so that there is one universal method to modify any device's configuration. If we didn't convert the updater-script then it would take months of work to overhaul the dozens of scripts (plus doubling my work) to accept updater-scripts, which would really NOT make a difference in the end anyway and would likely slow down the kitchen due to extra checks made in the updater-script. So please do not request this again and again, there is no gain in doing it (I also don't have that much free time ...).
When you build the ROM you have the option of converting it back to an updater-script, or the kitchen will convert it automatically if it decides it's necessary. The conversion back to the original updater-script is near-perfect, as I have already spent months on the implementation to get it right.
QUESTION: I have converted my update-script to an updater-script, but after flashing I still have the original ROM on the device.
That means your updater-script did not have the proper mount points defined for the system (and/or data) partition. Refer to this post for more info.
QUESTION: My device only supports ROMs with the updater-script/update-binary files but not the update-script
If you extract a ROM that contains an updater-script, then the kitchen will ask you if it should convert it to an update-script. You *must* use an update-script while customizing the ROM, as the kitchen is not capable of modifying updater-scripts. When you are ready to build the ROM, though, you will need to convert it back to an updater-script if the device requires it. Use the option in the Advanced menu to convert update-script to updater-script, or else the kitchen will ask you to convert it while building the ROM.

ok well depending on what apk's you are putting in.. if they are system required like a sense app.. it wont work on a froyo base rom.. but if its something like superuser or mail or something and is compatible with your rom than put it in system/app folder.. if its something that you want the choice to uninstall later on like a 'task killer' apk or something, place it in data/app folder..
and to sign it you dont need kitchen, you can download an auto-sign.zip file for windows here on xda.. all you do is unzip it directly to C: drive, place zip file in filder rename it to 'update.zip' than run the 'sign.bat' and it will sign the zip file. than you can flash it

did u do this on Kitchen?
If you want to add Market or non-stock apps (*.apk) to your ROM (which can be uninstalled or updated from your device later) then select the kitchen's menu option that adds "/data/app functionality". Afterwards you can copy these .apk files to the new /data/app folder of your working folder.
EDIT; After your done adding/deleting all the apps, dont forget to use the sign apk command to sign.

[Q] How can I remove messages from the phone log?

I am on a rooted 2.2 captivate but one thing really bugs me and that is the sms messages in the phone log. I know that on some custom ROM's the developer hs removed them. Cognition comes to mind. But without flashing the whole ROM is there a way to get just that functionality? Like say just replacing the phone.apk?
I have done some searching but have been spectacularly unsuccessful. Thanks for any guidance.
Yes you can just replace the apk however it's not the phone.apk it's the logproviders.apk, grab that from a rom and drop it into /system/app on the phone then reboot.

Do I need to do anything about the.odex file? I don't see one in the ROM's I've checked.
You won't find one in the rom its more than likely been deodexed, umm I think you just leave the odex file there.
Rename the original with a .bak at the end before you paste the new one in that way if it doesn't work yo usage a backup of the original.

Are you trying to copy it unrooted? If so try one folder at a time. Most people really just want buildprop, app, media & priv-app.

Does anyone know which apk is for Moto Voice and Active Display?
I can't seem to find them here.

[guide]easy apk modding (linux)

Most of the guides ive read on XDA say you have to decompile and recompile APKS just to make a couple of modifications to the images. Well I dont believe this to be true. I have tested my method on ubuntu 14.10 and with my nexus 5.
This guide is specifically for modifying images inside of the apks, not the code, or xml itself.
- ADB pull the APK file you want to modify (i chose SystemUI.apk)
- Double click it in File Manager on ubuntu, this should open it up in the archive manager. If not, manually open it up in archive manager
- Click on the "Add Files" button and select which files you want to replace. It will automatically overwrite the current ones.
- Make sure that you are keeping the proper directory structure and are putting the images in the proper place with proper names.
- Copy the new APK file back to your device on /sdcard/file.apk
Then, to get the APK file back on your system without causing problems, I rebooted into TWRP, mounted system and went into the file manager and copy/pasted the APK in the appropriate folder. When you get back into android, chmod 644 new-file.apk. I would not suggest trying to copy the modified APK file into your system while android is running live. Thats why I did it in TWRP. It could cause system unstability, crashing, etc... Im sure that I am not the first person to realize this could be done, but I did discover this on my own because I like to try things. PLEASE, make a backup in case something doesnt work correctly after your mod. Good luck!
