Only 11gb off actual memory of '16gb' advertised - Nexus 5 General

Find it to be verging very close to false advertising when a product sold as a 16gb device in reality is only a 11gb. That's 5 entire gb missing to the OS. That's fairly huge, but either way, don't market something as 16gb. Where's this extra 5 going to exactly?

Last I hear it was 12.55GB available.

OS?

Damn, that's a lot of space gone. More than any carrier bloated phone I've used before. Glad I opted for the 32gb model.

In fact, the total space listed in storage is 12gb, of which almost 11 is 'available'. I don't get it. Surely the total space should be 16gb.

It's been this way with phones for ages now. The advertised memory always includes the OS reserved partition. And it is 12.5GB last I checked.

This isn't anything new? Any device advertised as 16Gb has generally 11-12 Gb effectively available for user storage, rest of it goes into formatting information, OS (system apps etc) and stuff. Also, it's the difference between counting GB as 1000 vs 1024 MB.

That does seem like a lot, but straight from their site in the memory specs it says:
Memory
16 GB internal storage (actual formatted capacity will be less)
2 GB RAM
There are always these posts when a new phone comes out. The storage is total, not what is left after the OS is on it. Look at a Samsung or HTC phone and see how much they use, it will blow you away how much space all the skins take, not to mention how much all of the bloatware a carrier puts on it.

The 5gb is taken up with the OS and related files as well as built in apps as well as the disparity between disk size marketing and actual disk size.
All hard drives and memory are marketed with 1GB = 1000MB whereas computers actually define 1 GB as 1024MB, so that already drops you down to about 15gb including file system formatting.
The other 4GB will be the apps and stuff installed that make your phone work.
11GB free is actually pretty good. The Samsung Galaxy S4 only had 9GB free from 16GB.

Wouldn't it be wierd though if they advertised like 20.42 gigs of memory. But I would like one day to actually have 16 gigs of storage.

The Galaxy S 4 had 8.5GB of free space on the 16GB model.

This is why you bite the bullet and pay $50 more for the 32gb.
Then you won't spend the rest of your days with the phone kicking yourself for not just buying the larger memory device.

Was exactly the same with the n4... No shocks here

12.55, not 11.
Advertising has been this way for years, on hard drives, etc. Worthless rant >.>

Nothing new, was like that for the Nexus 4 as well.

What is 16GB about the note..??

Ive been checking my settings but could not find 16GB
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
It's the amount of internal storage your device has, although some of it is allocated for the system partition and other things. It has roughly 10gb I believe for user data.
Let me check it again to verifie..
Could it be this: (see first post)
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
16gb is partitioned as follows :
1gb - rom/system/data
2gb - user apps/data
11gb or so - usb mass storage
so there is your space
Have you you bought a hard drive? Sure I have a 3TB drive but after formating I'm lucky to have 2.7 TB left. The 16GB is just raw space once partitioned and formated you will never have 16GB. There are some loses in space depending upon what file system you use. All file systems have to have some space set aside for cacheing and system information.
Thanks I Understand now..
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
I've one additional question.
What about system space ? It's a place where i can install apps ? Only 1.88 gb ?
Yes "only" 2GB for apps..
As far as I can tell, no phone ever had more than 2GB "except Galaxy Nexus" and most of them did not even reach that capacity..

And besides, a lot of large apps like GPS navigation apps or games only store the main program in the apps partition and use another partition or even your external SD card to store data. With the majority of apps not even exceeding 10 or maybe 20MB you can install hundreds of apps.
LOL you are talking about a 16GB my brother got the LG P970 that phone says it has 2GB internal and he has about 1.1GB fir usage now that's a joke, nor being able to use music on the phone.

I would have rather had a 32 GB than my 16. Once I load music and a couple movies its full.
I don't like having to watch the storage that close.

looks great finally google solved the storage issue only issue is that most people already have bought the 16gb varient and if this releases they are stuck with 16 gig unless they sell the 16gb and buy a 32gb version
I saw this like an hour ago and I would jump on this as soon as it is released. I got the 8 GB and after about a week I regretted not getting the 16 GB because 5 GB definitely isn't enough for backups and a lot of high definition games.

Another website explained the Carphone Warehouse refers to the Samsung Nexus S as the "Samsung Nexus 2", I assume because it came after the Nexus One.
Personally, I would rather they made one model...an 8GB model at $199 with an SD Card... If these things sold as good as one would believe, that simple change would have made this thing sell twice as good (in my opinion).
Yea that would make sense but I read an article a week or so ago that explained why the Nexus devices don't have SD slots: its not because they're forcing us to use cloud storage its because they're trying to get rid of the two different locations for storage. There weren't chips big enough to add a crap load of storage until now (I believe Samsung just released their 64 GB chips). I wouldn't mind not having removable storage as long as there's like 32 or 64 GB worth.
Most likely this wont happen but it be pretty awesome if Google made it an option that you could send in your N7 to them and then they could update it for you for an extra 10-15 dollars to 32GB. I would be first in line to do this.

Actually you could do this yourself if the only design change is the increased RAM.
The display is the most expensive part of the Nexus. If the form follows function of the 32GB, you'd simply purchase a repair MB for the 32GB model to put into your 8 or 16GB model.

Used Galaxy Note 1 or new LG Nexus 4?

Anyone with the Galaxy Note 1 thinking about switching to the Nexus 4? I'm debating whether to get a used Note 1 or a new Nexus 4. Would you give up 0.5" screen size and SD card slot?
LG nexus 4
Memory Card slot No
Internal 8/16 GB storage, 2 GB RAM
other specs are appealing.. but then Note 2 has the same and No Spen .... no way
i cant live with that.. too less of storage
Nexus 4 looks really awesome but the major disadvantage is that it doesnt have a memory card slot and has just 8/16gb internal storage(no 32gb)
If the storage capacity is not a problem, then i suggest you go with nexus 4

Disadvantages of Nexus 4:
1) No external memory card slot
2) Non-removable battery (u cant use extended battery if you want)
3) 2100mAh battery is too less for such a powerful phone
4) No S-pen
So, a used Note 1 wins in my opinion..
If the battery is non-removeable then u should buy note 1...

I strongly disagree mister. You need to use a nexus device to decide whether its crappy or not.
Fast software update (no need to wait months like sammy users do)
Wireless charging
$300 phone --2GB ram, S4 Snapdragon CPU
I personally have a 32GB micro SD card and still have 19GB free (I have movies, songs, enormous amount of pics)
I have 2 extra samsung batteries (but I never use them, although I watch 3hrs movie every day+plus chatting, music).
People need to sit down and think/analize what they're going to use their phone for. Ask yourself, do you really need an extra battery? Are you a heavy user? Do you currently carry a spare battery in your pocket?
External battery charger can be very useful during travel
Memory can be handled by usb OTG or cloud storage. I personally have a lot of useless crap in my phone that I dont even use nowadays.
So no, it's not crappy IMHO.
I have a 32gb micro SD and I have only 5gb free. 8 or 16 gb is really small particularly if you play big games like six guns or modern combat. The small storage size is really a problem for me.

I think the nexus 4 is serious contender with the specs on offer with this device. I know it's the only device that would tempt me away from Samsung phones. Downside it is made by lg but looking at the reviews and specs of lg optimus g (from which nexus 4 is coming from) is very appealing for me a must say.

Downside, no expandable memory, deal breaker for me, I use a 32GB card plus my 11gb internal and am almost maxxed for music and video, just couldn't settle for 11gb max usable storage. Fixed battery, the battery wears out, these days probably after a year, fixed battery is another deal breaker for me.

I think the Nexus 4 is a really good deal. For $350 you're getting the most out of Android. If I didn't buy my Note a month ago, I would have most definitely gotten the Nexus 4.
If you need more than 16gb of space, you can always get the 16gb phone, which is more than enough for apps and games. For extra storage, use Dropbox (2gb free), Google Drive (5gb free), and SkyDrive (7gb free). Both have apps that work perfectly on Android.
If you want even more space, do all the dropbox referrals using virtual machines. Each referral will earn you 500mb, for up to a limit of 16gb. Which means you only need to do this 32 times to get the free 16gb.
You can also use the camera upload feature to earn 3gb for free.
For even more space, you can earn a couple of gb from doing the "Simple Tasks" (which is a dropbox getting started guide).
If you're a university student, right now there's an event called the Great Space Race (the more students from your school is using dropbox, the more space you get) that earns you up to 25gb for up to two years (you'll probably be using a different phone after two years, and in 2015, phones are probably gonna have 32gb/64gb base).
I use both of these services on my 16gb Note with no SD card. I earned all possible free storage on dropbox and now I'm running on 39.88gb cloud storage. All my music and videos is stored in the cloud which is convenient.

What you're expressing is kind of pointless, there's a limit to external storage in cloud terms muchly based on size and compatibility.. There is no reasonable chance that anyone would transfer a movie over cloud, just not data forgivable yet. It's fine for small programme info and data, but not for big apps transfers or movie files, until 4G of course.

Do you mean a file size limit? If so, I haven't had a problem with that with Dropbox. I've uploaded 13gb HD mkv movies with no problem. with almost 40gb of free storage I have no problems with storing data. I agree that transfering the files and then listen/watch is time consuming. Sometimes you won't even have enough space on your phone to store the temporary files. That's why I always stream off the cloud and even on 3G speeds, streaming an HD movie is no problem.
Data limits.... expensive plans. You don't always have Access to stream like airplanes. It doesn't help with games either. To me there is no excuse to lose features on newer phones. My vote goes for Note
Sent from the Mighty Note International!
As long as you're on an unlimited data plan there's nothing to worry about. That said, I agree that lack of a memory card slot is inconvenient, but maybe Google's trying to promote their Google Drive? I don't like SD cards because it's confusing where everything belongs. Anyway I love the idea of cloud storage and I'm probably biased to it. Both phone are good choices, but if I were to choose one, I'd go for the Nexus 4.
Same thing explained here, but for for me memory card slot is important until & unless they provide 64 or 128GB on device
I have 64gb microSD and it is more than half full synced with my Dropbox files for areas without data reception.
Internal memory is required for apps, some have large space requirements.
So.... It depends on your usage.

For all of you guys complaining about lack of storage, if it's that much of an issue, you can just use MicroSD or USB OTG. (At least when it is available for 4.2, which with the dev community it should be in no time) Keep a connector on your keychain or something along those lines.

[Q] Missing 10.05GB storage on the 64GB HTC One Dev. Edition

Hi Guys,
Have any one of your experienced this? I boot up the phone, went through all the account setups, downloaded a few apps and checked the storage.
Guess what, there's 10.05GB of storage missing! Actually, it's allocated as "Other". How can that be? I haven't connected it to my computer and haven't transferred anything to the device. Is it the OS and system files taking all that space? I can't imagine it needing 10GB though.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Hmm that is weird and I can't imagine sense utilizing that much system memory.

Completely abnormal when you compare what the system needs to run as opposed what it's reserved for itself.
6GB is bad enough but 10GB is a bonkers amount of space to reserve.

priest9R said:
Sorry but when you say its abnormal then told us why!!! When you buy a harddrive its the same problem.
Your system needs a buffer in cost of your memory. Even more memory smaller the net value.
Same procedure as a harddisk.

Don't be daft. There's a difference between stated capacity and available capacity of storage. Always has been. That's not what's being discussed.
What is being discussed is the amount of space the OS is reserving.
There's a comparison here to the outcry when windows 7 demanded 21GB of drive space to install all its bloat and drivers.
Suggest you clue yourself in.

[Q] How much Storage do you think you will need?

I am currently on a nexus 4. I had this for a few years and never had an issue with storage. I kept it light since it only had 16gbs. i had a oneplus one for a little while and used about 15gbs for games, music and all that. Now i ordered a nexus 6 on 11/5 from the google play store a 32 blue. I was aiming for the 64 but thought if i didn't get the 32 i wouldn't get a phone at all. So i nabbed it real quick. Now I am still debating over getting the extra storage. I managed on my nexus 4 but the extra space just seems nice. What made you choose the one you chose?
You do know that the Nexus 4 were 8 & 16GB devices, right?
I thought the Nexus 4 only came in 8 and 16gb variants. I've had an 8gb nexus 4 that I've been using for the past 18 months. Once you get past the space reserved for the system usage, I get 5.67gb of available space. I'd say I ran out of space for music and videos and stuff about 6 months ago and I've been resorting to dropbox, google drive, streaming and the like to keep myself entertained.
This time i went with the 64gb because I'd like to not worry about running out of space. 32gb sounds sufficient now, but in 24 months it probably won't be. Also going from $299 for 8gb to $349 for 16gb seemed like a lot of extra money for a little extra storage space, but going from $649 to $699 is like a drop in the bucket by comparison.
The nexus 4 was only sold in 8/16 GB models. Not 32GB. However, I ordered a 64gb because i always error on the side of caution and would rather pay a little more now then realize i need more storage down the road and not be able to do anything about it. Plus I hear the new run time uses about twice as much space for apps because of the cache.
64gb minimum.
I'd personally like 128gb.
32gb or less is pants in this day and age.
My last 2 phones have been 32 and I have never had a problem but I'm not one to keep useless Crap on my phone either. I don't play games. I always go through my pictures and delete bad or useless photos. How much damn music can u listen to. I mean really, people put 10gb of music on their phone and probably never listen to 98% of it. With all that said I like to go ever board on most things so I would have gotten the 64gb if I had the option at the time but for me 32gb will do just fine and I can spend the money saved on ammo.

I have 50gb of music on my Note 4 - All Wav Full size - Whether I listen to it is irrelevant, 64gb should be minimum.
Google need to get their act together or put a micro sd slot in their phones
I'd be fine with an 16gb device, so 32gb will do just fine.
32gb is ok for me as I dont put a lot of music on or vids, mostly stream content, but if they offered it in USB3 i would get 64gb so I could use it to transfer data and a portable hdd. Otherwise it takes ages to transfer stuff
I own 16GB Nexus 5 and it has 4GB free available.
But, that's because I don't install games, only 1. And I don't store music / video in it.
With Nexus 6, I plan to get the 64GB, although 32GB would be enough.
Why 64GB? Think about 4K videos, that might be cool, no? And that requires more space. Also 13 MP photos compared to 8 MP of Nexus 5, more space needed.
Lastly, because I intent to keep this "expensive" device for at least 2 years .... 64GB is more preferred!

I'd personally like 128gb.
32gb or less is pants in this day and age.

I agree. I wish companies would start offering 128 options or even 256. How hard is it to even offer that much storage?
I've never even used the full 8 on my N4. I'm good with 32.

Ask Apple, since their 128GB iP6 models are suffering HW issues currently.

I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it....Go big or go home!

This is the thing. I'm considering going for the 64 again. It just feels nice to know you do not have to worry about space at all. I plan on putting games on my device because it seems perfect for gaming. 4k video does take a lot of space, so i am not sure what to do. I could have ordered a 64 from motorola but hesitated lol.
I"m one of those who was sad to see Google abolish the SD card from the Nexus devices, and was torn between getting a phone with bloat, but expandable storage, or a clean phone with no such abilities. I ultimately went for the latter, and was really worried that 32GB wouldn't be enough. In reality though, 32GB has proven more than enough. I'm sure I'll never even come close to filling it up, short of stuffing a lot of HD movies in there.
That said... I ordered the 64GB version of the Nexus 6, basically, for no other reason than I felt if I was willing to shell out $650 for a 32GB device, I might as well spend the other $50 for double the storage. Had that model been $100 more, I'm sure I'd have stuck with the 32GB phone and been fine. I guess we all have our lines in the sand.

LOL. You're using the fruit company as an example why not to use big storage?
Last I checked, the 256 GB SSD I have in my laptop was purring along quite happily, no issues at all.
You can't use one bad implementation as an example why something is globally a bad idea. In fact, you should probably assume that the problems apple is having, is either related to their specific chip supplier, or a flaw in the storage format they use. Note that the fruit company uses their HFS storage format, which may not be well tested on 128 GB flash media, and is used exclusively on a subset of consumer devices. Android uses EXT4, which is very well tested on 128 GB flash media, and deployed on things like SERVERS all around the world, proven very robust.

^^ That.
Given the difference of $50 and the *lack of an MMC slot*, I consider it a no-brainer to get the big one. If you ever end up *needing* the space, you will be kicking yourself for buying the small one.
Being a crack flasher, I need MOAR storage. 64 GB should be fine for me.
