Biggest Disappointment? Speaker. - Nexus 5 General

I've been really satisfied with the overall performance and feel of the Nexus 5. The only problem I have with the device is the anemic speaker quality. I feel like I get more vibration from the phone than I actually get sound out of the device.
Its not a deal breaker for me (I'd rather have a reference device than speakers on the front that sound good like the HTC One) but it is a concern. Not sure if I'll be able to even hear it ring in louder environments.

I think the speaker is like 1000x better than the Nexus 4 speaker.

I don't like the placement of the speaker. I keep putting my thumb over it cause of the way I hold my phone.

Funny, one of the reviewers on Youtube said that the speaker was incredibly loud. Search for Androidizen's hands on.

I agree. Speakers suck in this phone. However that is only if you turn the volume all the way up. If you leave it at 80% sound is clear. Not too loud though....

Its reasons like this that almost anything you read has to be taken with a grain of salt, some say the speaker is loud, others say its barely audible. I mean come on, how can anyone make an informed decision when every detail of the phone gets praises and boos at the same time.

My Nexus One not cutting it

every few years i like to buy a high end phone just because i do a lot with my phone. Ive owned phones like the sony w900, nokia n95, iphone 3g, and my nexus one. Besides the iphone 3g which i ditched and went back to my n95 in two weeks. after nearly half a year now and with the release of froyo that doesnt fix my complaints with the phone, i find that the nexus one has been my most disappointing. It seems either google or htc cut many corners with the phone (speaker, sound recording, phone overheating, weird problems with the touchscreen).
im not a fanboy or anything, i just prefer to buy the best possible phone when i buy one, and was considering an iphone 4 until steve jobs basically gave the middle finger to all those with the antenna problem. so now im looking into getting a galaxy s when it comes out.
anyone know if the poor sound in video recordings is exclusive to the n1, or all android phones? thanks
Well the Nexus uses an inferior codec for encoding its sound in video (AMR.)
Currently people are working to enable the AAC codec for video to allow for better recording. Since Android is open source, manufacturers can install their own codecs for use with their cameras, so its possible/likely that the Galaxy S will have better video capability (they also have included the DivX codec for watching movies I believe)
The Nexus really has a terrible speaker though

haha yes i know G1 was just as bad (a lil better imo,) but the nexus one is supposed to be a superphone! it sucks coming from nokias which cost $250-300 less than the nexus
The Moto Droid came with an outstanding speaker AND a 16gb microSD card. Those are the only two complaints I have with the N1. We should bombard HTC with emails demanding that they use speakers on par with Moto's going forward.
I'm glad I never use my speaker, lol.

Minor criticism - 3.5mm jack output quality subpar

It's not a main selling point of the tablet but the sound quality coming out the 3.5mm jack is not up to snuff.
Using the same headphones in my GNex, the sound is much more full and bass thumps a bit more.
push the headphone jack all the way into the socket?
It's been mentioned a few times in other threads already....ram the jack in hardddddddd until you hear a loud click. Then it's fully seated.
If it's not fully seated, it sounds tinny and mono instead of stereo.
The jack is ridiculously tight but it's not low quality....

Is it weird that the way you wrote this excited me? But seriously Op, Kenyee is right. I almost thought it was 2.5mm jack and I would break it if I forced it in. After quickly checking the official specs, I just went for broke and thrust it in there. Works great now!

The sound on mine is great from the 3.5mm jack, perhaps your device has a manufacturing defect if you are pushing it hard all the way into the correct position, I know my jack is pretty tight with most of my headsets except for one that fits perfectly, but that one is a little lose in other jacks.

*shrugs* No offense taken, but....maybe your N7 has a defect. I'd hate to think at 39 yrs old I'm already going deaf But seriously, mine sounds awesome with my earbuds.
I've been using it in my car to play music and IMO it sounds better then my EVO Lte with "Beats" (ooohhh ahh).
Nah its a tegra 3 issue.
Honestly most people wouldn't notice it, but im a little bit of an audiophile, and the sound quality is really lacking. Sounds like listening to a 128kbps mp3 vs a 320..
Same song, same headphones, both streaming from Google music, I would say the nexus is 70% (if that..) as good as my optimus 2x.

Mine sounds great for a tablet. Yes, it is no where my $2000 DAC and amp setup but good enough considering it's price. First thing some of you need is a high quality earphone. Don't use cheap ass iPod ear buds and then complain about the quality of the sound. The speakers on the nexus 7 on the other hand do kind of suck.

I concur....speaker quality isn't that great. I got "volume + "(volume booster) from meltus in the play store and it's soooo much better, by 50%. Very minimal distortion when you increase the volume in the app setting to the recommended number, which is 10 I believe.

i actually think its pretty good and i think it provides a relatively flat output.
maybe some of you who are complaining have other phones/tablets that EQ up the bass, so you think that the nexus 7 is missing bass? just a thought.

But seriously, you should know better than to expect audiophile quality from a SOC that costs $20.

Nexus 4 Sound quality = GOOD!

Got my Nexus 4 today, for those in the UK, i bought it on PAYG from o2 (£399)
Been running FLAC files through PowerAMP with my Sennheiser IE7's and they sound as good, if not better than my Cowon J3 DAP.
The Cowon J3 is a high-end DAP so i'm really impressed this phone can compete.
No yellow screen issues so far either, but i've not been benchmarking yet, gonna give it a week before i stress it out.
Yeah I was really surprised with the audio when I first plugged in my XB-1000's. I was expecting mediocre-bad audio quality that you typically get with phones but this seems really great. It's a really well rounded phone.
Wow, surprising, and good to hear. My GS2 really has dead lifeless sound through my ety's. I've taken to using my Pre for MP3's as it sounds infinitely better. I hope others post their impressions here as this may be one thing that pushes me over to this handset once it arrives here. Damn shame they only put max 16g in it if it really is a musical media player. Did supercurio weigh in on it yet?

I think the Nexus 4 has the same DAP as the GSIII (US). There is a noticeable sound difference although the amp volume is lower. It still sound much better than the GalaxyNexus + Sound Tweaks.
Actually now I've tried headphones, incredible on stock audio settings with Poweramp.
I have one issue, using the headphone jack with the line input on my car suggests the output is quite low (I used to have an Atrix, I had to turn that down one from full because it distorts!). I now have to turn my car up quite high to be able to hear anything. One thing I am appalled about is the fact the device doesn't seem to play nice with my car charger... i get serious background noise when that is plugged in (no issues on the Atrix)

i had an international SGS3 with the voodoo sound implementation from siyah, while the Nexus 4 does sound worse its not a whole lot worse.
the main differences fell with the bass they are not quite as deep and the highs are a bit rolled off compared to the SGS3 but not enough to cause an unpleasant listening experience; im sure with time perhaps with DSP manager it will be even closer.
but the bottom line is its not that much worse that id go back to the SGS3 and audio quality was my main concern with the keeping either handset (i've only just put the SGS3 on ebay )
for the comparisons i used Shure SE535;s IEM's

I don't have any Apple devices so I can't compare, but I can tell you it sounds really good with my older XB-500's too in comparison to my PC soundcard & especially previous phone (Xperia X10).
It's not head-thumpingly bassy and loud like you'd get with a proper amp, but there is still some good bass and just overall the sound is very pleasant. :good: I think you will be quite happy with how it sounds if you're not overly audiophilic.

cant speak for the iphone but!, i have a cowon S9 and as many know sound ALOT better than apple devices and the Nexus 4 is not far off of the Cowon S9 once again not quite as deep bass, or as crisp highs but pretty damn close. (for reference tho SGS3(int) with siyah kernal sounds the same as Cowon S9 + J3)
I noticed a much better audio then I had on my inspire through Bluetooth.

I was using an iPhone 4 while I waited for my nexus, I can say the nexus sounds a thousand times better.
Testing now through Sennheiser HD 280s. Sound quality is excellent to my ears. No hiss, pops. Much better than the GS2, the DAC on that is a pile. Volume could probably be a touch louder, I'm between two and three clicks down from max volume in Google Music for regular listening volume. That may explain the low volumes with car stereos. I'll compare with an iPhone 5 later.
Ah so it wasn't just me! I did notice a difference when switching from my gs2. I use the new xb600. It sounded like crap on my gs2.

Thank you, guys! I'm very impressed with the results! Waiting for the further comparision with other devices
loving the nexus 4 but music hooked up to car stereo sounds like crap compared to the iphone 4s/5.
Output level is extremely low on the nexus as well. What needs to be at a level 20 on my wifes iphone is like a 32 on the nexus 4. Ill experiment w/ the equalizer tonight but as it stands it doesnt compare. (sorry for being unbiased)
I thought the GS3 had better sound output. My n4 just doesnt get as loud. Is there anything I can do to fix this? btw i use google music

Just to Clarify about Vibration Motor defect in Nexus 5

I read lot of posts where people is asking himself if the nexus 5 vibration is normal or not (seems like a truck). I'm here to CLARIFY the question. I can do this because fortunately i bought 2 phones (1 for me and 1 for my girlfriend) and i have 1 faulty and 1 not.
To explain better i can 100% says that the sounds i listened into the defect thread is exactly like my phone (the faulty one - 32gb white) and the other one (32 gb - black) is totally DIFFERENT AND NORMAL, so guys i know lot of you are happy to have a vibrator in their hands but trust me and check with someone else you meet : is FAULTY ,the right one is normal, like any other phone (to be honest isn't a good quality vibration like my htc one for example, but it doesn't sound loud as the faulty).
and few words about this:
I know guys that everyone here loves google, me too, but i'm objective. If you sell a phone and for example os is not 100% stable, i can understand, i wait updates and it's ok; if you don't put a 2$ earphones inside, i can accept, but if you sell phones with dead pixels, dust under screen, faulty and crappy vibrator motors, faulty screens, faulty buttons with rattle, here is a question of QUALITY and PLEASE don't say me that the phone is low cost. I PAID 410 EUROS, not 100 and if go to a market and i buy a cheap phone (100euro) i don't have rattle or something like this. We can say that they don't do quality control process properly and that a BIG company like google MUST check this and the data that confirm my ideas is the form that users here have compiled: only 38% of phones are resulted with NO DEFECTS, all others with SAME PROBLEMS, so it's not just a feeling. It's a Real problem...
my suggestion is : DO RMA until it's possible, my MONEY wasn't with dust, or it wasn't rattling...
hope to have done a useful thing

it's okay, he's European.
I paused every single time i saw those "...". Damn it lol
Lol...I´d suggest waiting for the 2nd or 3rd charge or just replace the motor yourself (it is glued to the BACKPLATE, so it´s VERY easy ) - at the moment with my personal experience, there are more faulty motors than correct ones..it might just be something like the Power Button rattle, easy to fix. I have had hands on 5 devices (including mine) - ALL of them did that Chirping sound when typing on the keyboard ( all of them were black, if it matters ). So RMA´ing now will most likely not result in a perfect device. You just might get a worse one..
So again: Wait a few months and then RMA -> until then JUST DEACTIVATE the vibration on keypress - this is an easy fix as the chirping noise only occurs on very short vibrations rhythms (e.g typing on the keyboard)
Here a sound example what everybody is talking about:

Greetings and sorry for the bad English grammar - I´m European aswell :S
I'm very confused about what is written in the OP.
What is wrong with the vibration motors? I noticed mine is not as strong as the one in my GS3, but that's about it.

wow...there is LOT of nitpicking going on.
The vibration is fine..... you feel subtle vibration while typing and the "noise".... i only heard when i had the phone's back against my ear....plus it's the same sound i've heard come out of all phones that use a linear oscillator vibration motor.

I think you're absolutely right!

Mine makes no sound what so ever. Only the keyboard click from SwiftKey. Not even up against my ear. In fact when the phone was up against my ear I couldn't even hear the click sound from SwiftKey. No sound whatsoever.

Mine sounds weird too. Doesn't seem normal.

it's impossible that there is "no sound whatsoever" if your vibration is on for the keyboard. Do you even have haptic feedback on in swiftkey?

Umm it's not impossible and yes I do have it enabled and actually have the haptic set to 20ms which is longer than default.

Mine sounds perfectly normal so far. it's actually quieter than my htc one s.

Speakerphone (loudness, clarity)

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the HTC U11's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The speakerphone is total garbage its absolutely awful if you ask me!

Yeah I guess im just used to my htc10 speaker with a sound mod... Much louder!
Not sure what you are talking about, there might exist phones where it's even better, but I actually find it extremely loud and clear! Way better than how I remember the M8 to be when it was new (my speakers somehow degraded over time). And, more importantly, people on the other side hear me very well too, with the M8 they were complaining the whole time when I was using the speakerphone.

Yeah I still see people brag about how much better the M8 speakers were but I have mine still side by side and the M8 speakers are very low.

Well the 10 with a mod I could hear over my exhaust for my type-s RSX now I can not hear anything unless I literally hold it up to my head.... So to me that says alot! Just booted my m8 and it also has moded audio and it isnt that much louder to be honest.

There is a sound mod in viper rom. It made the u11 speakerphone louder for me from what I could tell.
Previously I had Axon 7 and its speakers were much better than those in u11.

Exactly axon 7 speaker is amazing with lenovo dolby app
Amazing when playing music or watching video, but on a call the sound only comes from the bottom speaker.

Which mode is that, coz my HTC 10 loud speaker wasn't as loud as my HTC One m9
Today I took a shower and during that shower I realized I feel like listening to some music. so use the magic words and I spoke to my phone I said to him ok Google Play Coldplay music in Spotify.
Then the volume was too low, so I spoke to magic words again and ask my phone to increase the volume it worked out just fine.
Awesome!!!

Your speakers may or may have not degraded.
The speakers from my M9 were very quiet at some point and the sound sounded like it was cracking.
The problem was that dust got in the grille.
So i just took a toothbrush (dont forget to dry it before using it) and took out the dust.
You have to swipe towards the screen to get the dust out.
One of those small brushes used to clean hair trimmers is good too.
I first saw it here and it actually worked:

I'm very happy with the speaker. I compare it to my older S6 and my temp OnePlus 5 and the sound coming from the U11 is much richer and warmer. It might not be as loud as the OP5 but the definition is much better where the OP5 sounds louder but very thin and high pitched.
Can someone tell me about the quality of ear piece ? Is it loud enough for hearing the caller from other side in noisy environment ?
Well the quality is amazing but the volume is extremely low unless you crank it to 100...but if you combine it with Viper4Android just use the "eXtra Loud" option set to extreme and Max Gain 4x and max output to 0dB... then half volume is now loud and the quality is still there
Coming from the iPhone 8 the volume is very low and distinct lack of bass.
Quite disappointed to the point I thought my unit was defective.
Hi,
for me,my M8 sounds better then my new U11.
