So here it is: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+5+Teardown/19016
Overall a nice repairability score: 8 out of 10.
Great read. Thanks OP.
The back removal looks promising...it would seem as though we can swap the back easily.
I love iFixit as much as the next guy, but their KitKat and candy puns were painfully abundant in this tear-down. A few puns bring a little wittiness to an article, but they way overdid it. Other than that, great tear-down as usual iFixit.
Achtung! Soldered buttons!

Are they serious??? Excuse me, but this is bull****! It is a well-known fact, that those parts break easily. So, one would need to replace the WHOLE motherboard in case of button malfunction (at least, not everyone is familiar with SMD soldering technique). Both thumbs down for such a poor design!

Hey mate, was going to ask you if you had changed your mind in exchanging for the white, then I thought of this after looking at the video lol.
This looks like the ideal option, doesn't it? :good:

Indeed it does, and with the added bonus of retaining the black speaker grille. I just hope the backs do become available, and that they are the genuine OEM ones.

I agree, but not sure if wireless charging or any other component is attached to the back plate, as this will bump up the price.

Looking at the video, it seems not. The inductive coils have glued to the battery, not the rear of the case. So fingers crossed...

Yes, it's black but the seller has promised that the white will be in stock soon.
This was refreshing coming from iPhone.
Looks like you can seas swap the back easy which was my main concern since I'm going case free.

... how is that really different from the design of most other phones? Don't think they normally use a button on a separate PCB. at least none that i've noticed.

Most phones nowadays have their buttons on seperate plates, connected with mainboard via connectors. Search the ifixit for other teardowns. Even Nexus 4 had them.

Well... yes, they are on separate plates on the Nexus 4. But to say "most phones nowadays"... not exactly true from a couple minutes of Googling. The only 4 fairly recent phones i can find searching iFixIt for a little have been the Moto X, Galaxy S3, Lumia 920, and Lumia 1020 (though the inclusion of this one might not be fair, since they DON'T seem to have a teardown of the phone, and the Nokia repair manual does not show the buttons actually being removed from the rear panel assembly... only disconnecting the ribbon). The HTC One's side buttons seem to be in line with a ribbon cable, and it does not seem to be removable judging by what can be seen on iFixIt. The Galaxy S4, as well as the Note 2/3 (it seems that for at least the volume buttons) uses micro-switches directly soldered onto the board.
It seems to be more of a design choice more than a repairability choice. I think it's far easier to keep a phone thin if they're not worrying about trying to tuck tiny ribbon cables and PCB's everywhere. I've yet to really ever have a hardware button crap out on a phone that i've owned, so it doesn't really bother me much.

Thanks for pointing this out to me. Didn't know, Samsung has moved to soldered buttons too. So, they've definitely decided to sacrifice repairability for the sake of thinness. I use to repair phones (as a hobbyist), and I had several phones with water damaged buttons. Now, with the disconnectable ones, it is always fairly easy to replace them, but with the soldered ones, it requires SMD soldering experience, as well as special equipment.
So, my point here, is that separate buttons design would be more user-friendly.
My personal choice would be micro-switches on a separate plate, since they deliver better tactile experience, and are more reliable, than a membrane-type tablets.
Found a video, demonstrating the replacement process: http://youtu.be/Vo0hH8iIUjI
By the way, installing the new button should not be done with hot air gun, since it will most probably deform the button's plastic at least to some degree, if not totally.

EDIT: After a few days of comparing sound quality with a working Nexus 7, I decided I could do better than the Eee PC speakers. I have another set of better speakers I ordered directly from a components distributor on the way, and I'll post an update when they come in. Link
I'm another unlucky Nexus 7 owner to have their speakers blow out through normal usage. Unfortunately none of the temporary fixes seemed to work, and it's entirely possible that I made my speakers worse through trying them. I had crackling on both speakers, and at any volume. So, I submitted a RMA to Asus about two weeks ago and never received a response.
Then I got the bright idea of removing the speakers altogether to see if I could shoehorn together a custom solution. I'm documenting my findings here in case any of you want to give it a shot yourself and don't particularly care about voided warranties. Yes, you are voiding your warranty simply by taking apart your device. And no, I don't think you should try this if you're afraid of soldering irons. For those of you that are comfortable handling burning hot metal rods, this should otherwise be a pretty simple process. I've burned myself countless times, and even I was able to complete this mod in about 45 minutes.
The first step is that you need to buy a set of small laptop speakers, preferably something that has been gutted from a netbook. Speakers come in all shapes and sizes, so ideally you want something as small as possible and doesn't require much power. Impedance and resistance values are negligible, since the worst thing that could happen when you plug in slightly larger speakers with different values is that your device isn't as loud as before. Once I was ready, I went on eBay and started looking at Asus Eee PC speakers, since I thought the odds are good that Asus re-uses a lot of connectors and speaker sizes in their devices (later I found out this was not entirely true). I also did some Googling just to get an idea of what kind of sound quality I could expect from Eee speakers, and most people seemed to think they were okay. I ended up with some speakers from an Eee PC 1005HAB.

Big thanks to Lokheed for this steal at just over $5 with free shipping. That's half the cost to ship the entire Nexus 7 back to Asus for repair.
The connector looked similar enough to the original for the Nexus 7 speakers that I thought maybe I could get away with doing zero soldering, but unfortunately when they got here the connector was easily twice the size. The other problems were that the pin layout on the connector was different (Vcc, Gnd, Vcc, Gnd versus the Nexus 7's Vcc, Gnd, Gnd, Vcc), and the solder joints for the speakers were hidden inside of the plastic casing. The speakers were much bigger overall, too, which meant things were going to get tricky for ensuring there was enough clearance to actually install them.
This is the point where I realized I had taken a gamble and was on the verge of losing, though luckily it was only a $5 gamble. I immediately set to work on trying to pry apart the plastic housing to remove as much extra plastic as I could. The housing itself was held together with some epoxy, so I had to run a blade through it before prying. Then to get it started, I used a pair of pliers as a makeshift nutcracker to crack one side open so I could fit a spudger in to start prying it apart.
The empty shells from the backs of the speakers. I have no idea why one of them seemed to be more difficult than the other. Luckily without the plastic housing, the speakers ended up being just barely thin enough to still fit. I took some tin snips to the edges and trimmed off as much as I could without breaking the frame on the membranes, then I just stripped the original speaker connector wires and soldered directly to the speakers.
When soldering, just de-solder the old wires from the speakers first and take note of the black vs red/white wires. The 7's speaker wires use red for Vcc and brown for Gnd, so solder the brown wire to where the black wire was, and the red wire to the other one. Simple!
Finally, I powered on my device and ran through a few Youtube videos to test that the speakers worked. Success!
After that I just secured them in place with a dab of hot glue and sealed everything back up. I will say that the speakers are definitely not as loud as the originals, which is to be expected since they're bigger and the Eee PC obviously has more juice to drive the speakers. However, they are a bit clearer than the originals, and it's much better than waiting around for Asus to put another set of speakers in that will probably blow out after a month again. Later on I might consider buying a few extra sets of original speakers in case I get tired of the low volume, but for right now I'm satisfied.
Would using Volume+ with these speakers increase the volume but keep good quality?

I couldn't seem to get Volume+ to work with the stock ROM. That said, it could also be a problem with sound reflection, since I tried flipping it over and it's definitely really loud on the other side.
I also put my girlfriend's 7 next to mine for comparison, and I'm starting to notice that the sound quality isn't actually as good. I've got another set of speakers on order from Mouser Electronics, which should be a lot nicer. I'll post my results when they come in.

We should burn all device designers responsible for putting speakers on a multimedia device behind the device.
I mean cone on, would they turn their Hifi speakers to the wall instead of to their couch?
Edit: Even my 190 $ chinese tablet (Yuandao N101 RK3066 Dualcore, 1GB RAM, 32GB flash, 31GB microSD, HDMI, Android 4.1) has stereo speakers on the front side in better quality than asus'. I don't even complain about all the absent ports ASUS/Google failed to integrate, but dear Asus please make sure you use high quality for the parts which are present.

First, I agree. But not only BEHIND a device, I'm also irritated by the fact it's off-centered. Watching movie in landscape makes the sound came only from the right or left side...... make it stereo and put speakers on BOTH side!
Secondly, your $190 tablet has Jelly Bean???? Where can I buy it? lol
Asus tried facing the speakers out the front with the TF101. The speakers were behind the screen and made the screen vibrate to make the sound seem like it was coming out the front. It was an interesting concept, but overall sounded kind of muffled because they were still pretty crappy speakers to begin with. I do like that the Yuandao N101 has small cutouts in the glass on the front, but in turn that makes the screen less durable.
It would make more sense to just manufacture a smaller piece of glass and have the entire bezel made of plastic or aluminum, much like how 99% of portable devices before the iPad were made (GameBoy, DS, PSP, etc.). But instead most companies and consumers are obsessed with the design of the iPad, and so all the competitors work on ways to replicate that instead.
If cost were not a problem, we'd be using electrostatic speakers that are integrated into the screen, thereby keeping the iPad-like glass panel and getting exceptional sound quality at the same time. However, nobody wants to spend $1000 on a tablet yet, so we're stuck with $2 integrated plastic speakers that blow out after a week.
So Asus wanted to charge you to ship the device back even though its a manufacturer defect

Mine blew yesterday. A quick search will lead u to a site where they sell OEM n7 speaker assemblies for around 25$. Just ordered one today plan to crack my n7 open takin out three screws and doing it my damn self. Not waiting on Asus or google for repairs or replacement. Plus I don't wanna deal with having to unroot pay shipping wait without a device, finally get it back, re root it and set it up again how I want it. In two day when parts arrive 5 mins later ill have working speakers. Then I plan to get external speakers to avoid this in the future. Hopefully someone will find some decent replacement speakers that will fit and not blow out on normal volume settings

Suggesting cutting wires to disconnect the 'blown" speaker

Granted their all quick/temporary fixes at best, but do you have a better suggestion? Preferably a non warranty voiding one....
Mine blew from using the alarm clock and a standard tone. Pretty ridiculous and am buying a cheap bluetooth speaker to use in my room for movies and alarm. I sent it to Asus last week and delivery confirmation shows they just got it. Hope this is a quick turnaround.
Good afternoon everyone. My best regards to earlyberd for this post. I used the information herein to continue the project where it left off…even though it may not be entirely in the OP’s original direction. I bought the suggested speakers using earlyberd’s link to Mouser. I was able to fit these guys into the Nexus 7, but it took quite a bit of mod work (in my opinion). So, I will quickly share my craziness and fill in details if there is interest.
Attached Word doc has embedded pics. The un-links below are higher res.

It is not apparent in the pictures, but I had to trim some of the ground plane off of the usb/audio jack circuit board to make everything fit. Some may get a queasy feeling at the thought of doing this. I would be happy to provide very detailed pictures for anyone interested.
Thanks.

Looks like they dont want you talking on the phone with this thing..
On a side note: how do these things actually work? Does it constantly keep your phone in charging mode (until the external battery is drained)? or does the phone use your main battery, THEN switch to the external battery (or vice versa)? (sorry I have never used one of these on any phone...only seen them for crapple phones)

I don't think it is a good idea using a case like this since it does nothing to protect the front glass edges of the Note 2 since it is snapping on primarily through the back. If you drop your Note 2 with this on, there is a good chance it will be against the front edges of the glass display and the notable amount of added weight increases the chance of cracking. It is much better to have a standard case that provides a lip and get a cheap $10 spare battery.

To my surprise when I went to fold the cover close it wouldn't close. the battery/cover hits the screen of the phone. If you press hard it will lie flat but there is no clasp to close it. The guy at the store couldn't figure it out either. It seemed like a totally terrible design.

I have had a similar one for a while now , in white color costs about 30$ here in singapore , its quite good and sturdy , the drawback mainly is that you cant remove the stylus when you have this case on . but otherwise the case and the battery is good hope we get a better design with the option to remove the spen or hook it up somewhere in the case should also be fine.. instead of in the phone..
Found this by accident while searching for a charger. $25 + $2 shipping. Available in black or white. Built in kickstand.

I just ordered the case that the OP posted. I will let you know as well how I like it. It isn't the perfect design but for the basic functionality of having an extra battery built into the case is good enough for me. The factory battery is already pretty good if you know how to maximize the life of it. I won't use the case everyday, but only during those times when I really need a extra long battery life and don't have access to a charger. And for just under $25 it looks like a good deal to me
Thanks for sharing OP

I think you got it wrong mate, this is posted in the n7100/n7105 section. I'm not sure what models are sold by Verizon but if its the n7105 then no these housing are meant specifically for the n7100. However, feel free to check the website as they do have alternatives.
Edit: actually I just noticed for some reason the accessories threads are all shared on the different note 2 forums. Although I clearly specified the model above.

With regards to eTradeSupply.com, I purchased a replacement OEM Titanium Grey N7105 battery cover (which specifically says LTE at the bottom near the speaker grill) and it was an exact match to the original battery cover that came with my phone (which I decided to cover with carbon fibre vinyl), with working NFC chip.
The battery cover came from US to Australia in under 2 weeks, which isn't too bad. Was well packaged and was exactly what I ordered.

Thanks Rene for the heads up. I'll update the OP with this video if you don't mind. This would prove really useful for a lot of folks at xda since its a cheaper alternative to replacing the whole display unit, although, seldom people are aware of its difficulty.

You're right the battery covers are all the same fit. Its just the difference is with the rear housing which has a different antenna configuration.

Give and take a few months after that phone in the video was released. Just a wild guess.
How am i supposed to do this at home? i think it's pretty impossible, you won't ever get the quality you get with sending it into maintenance..

Ive updated the OP. Its not that hard just need a lot of patience and to be very careful. It really depends on you, and unless youre giving it to a high tech phone repair shop expect the phone to not be in the same quality as it was from the manufacturer. In most cases these technician will charge you for the full replacement of the screen unit as it requires less work and cost you more.
Note to the OP :
might wanna add some small but very handy and quickly worn-out things like the usb plug's pcb, the loudspeaker and /or buzzer assembly, replacement front and rear camera modules, and many specific body parts that are all available at parts4repair.com (a not very well known, but very reliable and cheap site, has a very broad parts stock and some of the best deals I been able to find anywhere for my note2 or galaxyS2. I get all my parts from them and never had a complaint about the service or parts anyways).

Where can I get the micro USB part? Is it interchangeable with the n7105?

As they don't seem to have the equivalent for the 7105 I assume they're interchangeable.
I'd go ahead and try it : it's only about 20 bucks including shipping after all, and you ain't risking much by swapping out such a part 'for triesies'. At worst it just won't be PIN-compatible and you'll not be able to plug it in, and at the very worst it just won't work (but you won't even have to return it, as the sheer number of N7100 in circulation right now makes the probability of you finding someone who's complaining of a jumpy USB port on theirs a very very high one... Those people are always happy to take it off your hands -especially if you offer to mount it for them -for a small fee of course ).
great tip for people who broke there phone screen.

This may be out dated, the version for the 7105 and 7100 is slightly different, I actually have the spare part for the N7105 purchased about half a year ago, never had the chance to use it, been using wireless charging.

Dont we get the whole MotherBoard ?

Be careful, if the batteries aren't properly made, they can go off (if it has a bad overcharge protection circuit). In India many people used to buy fake/duplicate Nokia batteries and had/have similar results, giving Nokia a bad name in some cases. Not often but definitely occurs. Just saying because it doesn't even mention the brand.
Better off with zerolemon battery and dual layer case.

Do not take the risk
wonder if it fits the Verizon model.
btw the zerolemon one has issues with obstructing the camera and the buttons not working very well. (at least from the few reviews I can find)
hmmm if someone has the zerolemon one can you let me know if the portion around the camera is able to be dremel'd away a bit?
Might have to get one and see if I can 3d scan-edit-3d print a new one at a friends house

That would be so epic! Keep us posted please! Lol
I contacted zerolemon about the case.
Looking at pictures from reviews and amazon/their own site, I have a feeling they changed the case around the camera.
the reviews I have seen show it more of a contoured shape but the one I see on amazon its square and a little further away from the camera.
If they changed it I may order one and see, if it blocks the camera I will see about dremelling around the contour and see if I can "fix" it lol.
I've got a Kinect set up and ill 3d scan the parts before hand and look at modifying for a 3d printer.
Ok got a response from zerolemon.
Hello,
Thanks for your question. The camera part of the case has been widened to fix the obstruction issue, but the power button doesn't change.
So the camera is fixed. No dremel needed.
The button issue might not be a deal breaker, I usually use knock on to wake it. Volume could be the clincher.
I'm gonna think about getting it since its half the cost of the mugen one and I like how the zerolemon one doesn't have the plug dangling.
According to the video review the verizon g2 does fit.
I know this is a kind of old thread but seriously, the pics on that eBay listing look horribly photoshopped. I would be very cautious buying this case. Look closely at the buttons, and why is the entire case clearly visible, except the top. The top part of the case is extremely blurry. I don't know, something looks fishy about it.
Hi Guys Here is the same one but cheaper.

In a couple of weeks I'm going to give it a try the price makes me doubt of the product.
I have two ZeroLemon G2 battery cases (the seller sent an extra one and never responded when I emailed them), the second one is unopened. I'd be willing to sell for cheap if anyone is interested. It takes some work to get the case on correctly (specifically the volume and power buttons), but is otherwise about what you'd expect for such a product.

The one I'm using is square, so the unopened one is presumably square as well. I'll have photos up shortly. I'd be asking $20+shipping (I'm near Cleveland, OH). I can't imagine having a need for 7000 mah worth of G2 batteries in my house. The only time I ever use the case is when I'm driving Uber, I like to have Waze, Dash (connected to a Bluetooth OBD adapter), and audio going w/o having cords in the way, and that's the only way to do it.

This is everything that comes in the package, minus a couple of items. One is the glued-on screen protector. I didn't like it so I took it off. The other thing is there is a backing plate with styrofoam on the other side. This goes in where the battery would be if you are choosing to use the phone and case by itself, without the battery. I don't know where I placed mine, and I can't really see ever needing it anyway.
G2 case next to my old Nexus 4.
The camera and power buttons from the outside. I apologize for the quality of the shot, that bathroom mirror is dirty. I guess I could have just used the Nexus 4 to take a better picture, or my QX-10 attachment, but I was lazy.
Why would you need to use this? In my opinion it makes phone too big which isn't as comfortable at all!
Durability. I work where it can be dropped on a concrete floor easily. Or if in my pocket crushed. Plus the extra battery is nice.
Thank you Sean35. Just got the case today. The Verizon g2 does fit with a little extra efort. Agree the screen protector is coming off lol. Only issue i have is the "incompatible charger" bug. I am rooted running a custom kit kat rom so gotta figure that out.
I have an iOttie that I use on my note 4 (I am going to return it, to get the nexus 6). However I noticed that the nexus will be too wide for the car mount. Does anyone know a similar mount that will fit this phone?
Not off hand. I wish they would release an official car dock. The one for nexus one and gal nexus were awesome. Nothing released officially for nexus 4 or 5
There's an "iOttie One Touch XL" that holds devices up to 3.5" wide, which should be enough for an N6 plus a case.
I'm planning to get The Air Dock for it.

As much as I love wireless charging (and I do I have 5 QI chargers at home I use all the time) it just doesn't work for me in the car. I use GPS and stream music all the time with screen always on. Wireless can't even come close to keeping up to that. I'm sure it will be worse with the N6 screen size too... I am really hoping they release an official car dock this time. Moto seems to be good at doing that so I am hopeful.

On iOttie's website FAQs, they list the sizes of each of their mounts. Actually, the One Touch XL only goes up to 3.3", which should be just wide enough for the N6 since it is roughly 3.27" wide. However, it probably wouldn't work if you put a case on it. The only one I can see working if you put a case on it would be the Easy View 2, which has a max width of 3.5".
HOWEVER, I can see another potential issue arising if you want to use a car mount like this. Notice where the buttons are. They are not towards the top of the device like other phones. They are smack dab in the center going down the right side, taking up a good range in the middle of the phone. So you would have to have the mount clamp down on either the top or bottom of the device. I guess we won't know how awkward it would be to use until we have the device in-hand, so we'll see when the phone actually comes out.
Interesting- when I posted that comment there was a graphic on the Amazon listing showing support for up to 3.5. The image is no longer there, so it was likely an error. Too bad.

I have a Tylt Vu Qi charger for my N4 on my desk at work and I've loved it. I've had it for just about a year now (or has it been 2 I can't remember).

I like the magnetic phone mounts. I currently use one from Mountek on my Nexus 5. http://www.mountek.com/shop/
Do you have to use the plate or does it just hold on with the Nexus 5 magnets?
Anything like that but with qi charging?
Thanks

I just received this one from Amazon a couple days ago when I was able to get it for $7: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009GSI0MM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Will see how it works out. Keep in mind the buttons are almost smack dab in the middle of the right side of the phone, so you have to be mindful where the grippers will squeeze, or it'll push the buttons.
Inspiration! (Mountek nGrove Grip)

I'm using Mountek nGroove Snap2 with my Nexus5. It's great that I don't have to use any of the plates provided as Nexus5 has wireless charging feature, so the body will stick to the magnet just fine. It is very convenient that I can just throw and it stick easily unlike the hassle of using grip type mount.
Now I hope it will work just fine too with Nexus 6. The non flat back of N6 worries me. maybe I need to modify it so that N6 will not move around when mounted. :fingers-crossed:

I have the same magnetic mount. One of the best purchases I've ever made. I have an iOttie as well but the Mountek is just so much more convenient in that I don't have to slide open the arms to insert or remove my phone.
I have the same concern you do about the curved back. I also use a case and was thinking I'd have to bend the included metal plates to fit between the phone and the case. I absolutely refuse to stick the plate to the back of my case because of the added thickness and the fact that it will just look ugly.
I have the iOttie Easy One Touch 2 Universal Mount (The one that extends), it's a great mount and will fit the N6 without a case. The problem is the button placement on the N6., the mount manages to squeeze the lower volume button when it shuts. Also It will not fit with a case on. Just thought I would let anyone know who was looking into it for a care mount. Again for any other phone this thing is great, best mount I have purchased so far.
RAM X-Grip?
I have been looking into the RAM X-Grip, mostly because of its 4-point "X"-Grip which should avoid pushing any of the hardware buttons.
It is also built like a tank (w/ lifetime warranty) which should lend itself well to any dashboard video recordings should I desire to utilize it for that purpose.
It is relatively expensive ($40-52) but if it out performs (in terms of secure grip & vibration reduction) every other plastic 2-piece pincer style mount then it is absolutely worth the extra investment.
I am still unsure whether the short arm or medium arm length would be best and whether to go with the small or large suction cup option.
I read on Amazon, one pro for the large suction cup (aside from likely better suction) is that the 1" ball (that the arm attaches to) screws on to the suction cup so it can be a bit more versatile (allowing you to screw anything onto the suction cup) should you desire that functionality. Although it appears another option should you desire more versatility from your mount would be to purchase the 1" ball with the plate (w/ screw holes) separately and simply replace the X-Grip mount. This of course means you have the adjustable arm in the system now, but I think that's a good thing.
Last note:
I also read in an Amazon review (and sorta noticed in one video review) there MAY be a bit of play (rotating around the z?-axis, like rotating portrait to landscape) in the X-Grip cradle/mount itself, but more research is necessary to confirm this is actually an issue or just a faulty unit.
First post on XDA
I will be back after further research.
