[Q] Good idea to buy Japanese version Z1 ?? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Japanese version is even more awesome in terms of spec!!
32Gb memory, IR blaster and IPS screen!!
but... I'm those guys who loves to flash mods/roms and different stuff from this website
will the difference in spec give compatability problem beocz mods in this forum are made for international version Z1??
Could some1 who used to use Japanese version sony phones give me an idea??

No.
the phone is blocked to NTTdocomo bands so its pretty much near useles to use in another carrier (other japanesse carriers are more or less the same)
the only big difference is the IR blaster, and the TV reciever.
the 32gb can be covered by a 64gb sdcard, and all the screens are the same. (LCD with leds)

First Docomo always lockdown the boot loader and will never let you to unlock it, so if you like AOSP, it's better to keep away from it. And also if use other firmware the IR won't work.
BTW, if I remember correctly, when Z begin sell in Japan, somebody says it has better screen than the one use in the international, but later other says that just the different tuning. And this time again to say that different panel use in different region?

Carrier lock can easily unlock with docomo, just need to pay for it. TV receiver won't be useful outside Japan I think.

If you dig a little for the docomo's android history you will find it's just like the Verizon.
The memory's problem is just in you own.

US price of the phone.

Without contract what are the ballpark figure you guys think will be the cost?
650-700?
$800 maybe...

Its $749 outright in Australia. One would assume it'd be less in the US.

I came across just now an ad that's selling(Not pre order) the Xperia ZL C6506 variant for $650.00
http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-...peria-ZL-C6506-Android-4-1-W0QQAdIdZ450436593
legit or not?
Although I believe it isn't legit since I used google goggles on the images the ad provides and all images came from blogs so no actual picture of the device to be sold. But just posting it here thought someone from canada might thoroughly confirm it with the seller since the seller is only accepting meet ups for payment.
I HIGHLY recommend this site for all US users who want to get the Xperia Z. Its a company called handtec based in the UK and all their delivery is made over night. I bought my note 2, One X and S3 from them.
http://blog.handtec.co.uk/2013/01/23/buy-sim-free-sony-xperia-z-black-or-white-craftsmanship-design/
Just choose which color you want and click on the link. Its 433 pounds so around 690 US$. We don't have to pay for the vat ( value added tax).

Probably trying to sell a review device or something. I probably wouldn't buy it unless you're desperate to have it ASAP. These review devices aren't always even in the same update stream etc.

Ok... Actually I was indeed planning on purchasing it. But the frequency bands were not compatible here on our country whether it would be for HSPA+ or LTE.

Buying SO-04E (ZR) in Japan?

Hey, guys... I''ll be in Japan next month and I was thinking to buy one of these cuties for myself. Since I have close to zero knowledge on JP cell networks and specifically on this new model (selling as Xperia ZR worldwide, but 32Gb, TV?, what else?!) I would appreciate any info or advice!

http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/product/smart_phone/so04e/spec.html
I know that Docomo shops can sell it out of contract, SIM unlocked (extra fee). Do you have any experience on bootloader unlock, rooting, get rid of docomo apps, flashing other ROMs etc regular xda gymnastics , or would it even work on GSM networks outside of JP? Is it a good idea? I need a decent replacement for my oldish Atrix 4G asap...

You are misinformed, Docomo do not sell handsets without contracts attached, even at full price.
Bootloader non-unlockable in any case.
There is actually a site that sells unlocked docomo phones. Search Kyoto mobile or something like that.

There are a ton of used keitai sites, the best of which is probably used-keitai.kakaku.com, but seriously unless you actually live in Japan you don't want a japanese handset. Non-unlockable bootloaders, just different enough hardware to cause many issues with roms, and loaded down with a ton of bloatware by default.
Sounds like more hassle than what it's worth. I think it is possible to flash stock ZR roms on it using flash tool I'm pretty sure there's someone on xda that's already done it.

Not misinformed anymore, thanks dave. It is a hassle, bought HK C5503 yesterday. Really impressed with GLONASS supplement, fast and furious. And really unimpressed with so-called VGA embarrassing frontal camera. Better to leave it out at all.
Anyways, now waiting for a MHL2HDMI adapter from taobao.. that's how mirroring works, right? How long I'll need to wait for 4.2 OTA, any idea? Is it device or network related?

4.2 is region related for example. I tested 3 different firmware regions yesterday to find 4.2. Out of HK, GLOBAL and RUSSIA only RUSSIA would update to 4.2 from PC companion. I had problems with Nordic firmware so moved back to my original HK then tried Russian. Also the Russian 4.2 firmware has the latest OTA of walkman, album, and movies app

I've got a Xperia A from docomo and it's a little higher price than HK ZR. I've been using Galaxy Nexus for years and I've tired with endless updating for very tiny improvement and nexus doesn't go with my Jawbone Era, it will stop pass audio or incoming call to the Era sometimes a day. this issue haven't fixed by updates. Xperia A very friendly to all my BT device without any issue.
if you looking for a phone can take good photo(among phones pls) and good call recording(at least better than GNexus with BT Headset) and friendly typing/ SMS/contact book, good size to operate by one hand, and self defence from water an dust, and better battery life than GNexus, and a replaceable battery, and come with a charging dock, and what is matter of docomo apps there is always up to 700 MB free RAM there why DO care about 10 or 20 been used by docomo? Xperia A is good, large build-in storage is must.
BTW: it's have build-in OTG function without install any app from play store. Sorry for all user who have LG Nexus 4.
or if you Do care about Android Version, wait for a next nexus which is not manufactured by LG.

[Q] Canadians..unlocked inventory

Any Canadian's find unlocked Z1 stock at their local Sony Store this weekend?
All Sony Store in GTA said they are BO & no ETA. The Sony Store website says they have it in-stock but really it BO also.
I had pre-ordered two Z1's last week, both stores just called me today - one after the other >_<
If anybody is interested, I will have a black and white one in hand.
Just a word of warning - it states on the box that only the phone, USB and charger are included. It looks like the warning from Sony salespeople that no headphones are included is correct.
A bit OT, but when you anyone gets their hands on an unlocked Z1, can you extract the firmware? I'd love to flash it over my Rogers Z1.
Btw, the unit I got from Rogers (Wireless Wave) had headphones included.

Silly question -- C6906, correct?
That is correct. C6906 Unlocked. No headphones and no extra screen protector like I've seen on YouTube unboxings. So not only do I have the privelege of paying more for the phone, but I get less for it. Real classy Sony.
How do you go about extracting the Firmware? This will be my first Sony phone - I have been using HTC and Samsung phones prior. And how do you check if your bootloader is unlockable without actually unlocking it?
---------- Post added at 01:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:36 AM ----------
Ok - looks like I have 2 PMs asking about the Z1s - yes they are unlocked as I had pre-ordered that version last week.
I have not picked up the phones yet, but the stores have called me telling me that they are available and waiting for me.
Now I don't really have any particular aversion to shipping to the US - I presume you all want this model for the AT&T frequencies - but are you all certain that the C6903 won't work in your area? I have seen threads alluding to imported Z1s with working LTE on AT&T ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2476868 )
The reason why I hesitate to agree to shipping the phones out is due to the extra costs + custom fees? I will be charged tax on my purchase of the phone, so you are already looking at $791 CAD before any shipping costs. [Ontario has 13% sales tax]
Your best bet is to find somebody from Alberta - their sales tax for the Province is only 5%
To check boot loader unlock, type *#*#7348423#*#* on the dialler. Then go to
Service info > configuration > rooting status.
As far as extracting the rom, it's somewhere in the forum. I'll point you the link when i find it.

Sony stores in Canada are in short supply of the 6906. Other option would be to buy one from Bell, Rogers or Telus and unlock it. Remember that the Carriers are boot loader locked and cannot be unlocked.
I grabbed the last one from the Niagara Falls store this morning.
Is the version on Sony store C6906. The specifications show c6902, no LTE. Please if you had the c6906 version on sony store let me know. Thanks

Yes, C6906 is what is sold in Canada.
All Canadian (for VANCOUVER at least) Xperia Z1 "06" has a bootloader LOCKED.Status says no for bootloader, few of my friends got it through carriers and one got it through sony store and all says the same.
If bootloader matters that much to you then dont get it through any carriers or even the sony stores.
If youre living in Vancouver and you want a "03" Z1 with LTE, you can head over to Lansdowne, called "Mobile DNA." Bought all my phones from them, and they are seling it for $701 CAD before tax. if you pay cash then you dont have to pay the tax.
I put in an order for the white Z1 at the Eaton's Centre last week. I called them today and they said they still have no ETA.

Or can I only use specific EE firmware on it?

You can flash any software for your variant on it. I think ee is the 910f so any rom from any carrier for the 910f will work but unfortunately it will be sim locked to ee and probably region locked to Europe. You can pay ee or an online website for the sim unlock code but unless you plan to use a different sim there's no point

Tbh I think most people would prefer the exynos but as most of us are getting it on contract we will end up with the snapdragon. The exynos may well be the better phone but with all us and most of Europe getting snapdragon that will probably be the most supported version.
What I will say I have yet to find an app I use that doesn't work on my 4 year old s2 so i very much doubt there will be anything in the next 2 years that the snapdragon can't handle with ease. Even the new nexus has a 32 bit snapdragon so google will not be pushing 64 bit any time soon

I still have a year left on my Vodafone contract so getting one off contract is still the better option for me. But despite that, the SM-N910X Snapdragon version that I played around with at the O2 store seemed to lag somewhat, which worried me. The Exynos versions that I've seen online and YouTube seems to be smoother in my opinion.
Also, I haven't been hearing complaints from Exynos Note 4 holders, they all say its smooth and lag free. From the people that are complaining about lag, most of them seem to be Snapdragon holders. Not to mention that the Exynos is better in most of the benchmarks. Just take a look at this comparison:

My ee upgrade arrives in the morning so will have a better idea. Twizz lags a bit on any device due to its design, i've seen one person complain about lag in several different posts tbh. It's your choice obviously and if you are spending a lot of money you should get the model that you actually want so for that reason exynos might be better but make sure you check which bands the device and your carrier are supporting or ot could be a waste of money. I really can't see anything with a 2.7g quad core processor lagging with anything, any games that lag will some be fixed with optimisation
What about buy it outright from the Sumsung store??
If it is still locked to a carrier, can I just unlock it by paying for an unlock code online?
Or it is still locked to the carrier's frequency or something even after the unlock??

The phone will not be locked to the carriers frequency, as already posted sim free won't be sim locked and any sim locked phone can be unlocked for a small fee. What can't be changed is the phone hardware. Whatever bands the phone has can't be changed, there are several thread's stating what bands each model supports so just make sure to get a model that supports the bands your carrier uses
Just for the record things like tap to pay won't work on a unlocked phone. I had a S4 and a G3 all unlocked none work. My Z2 did and that was locked

I really can't see anything with a 2.7g quad core processor lagging with anything, any games that lag will some be fixed with optimisation

That's the European version which is Snapdragon.
Edit: It says it on the back of the box as well.

Thanks. Is one supposed to be better than other? Is there much in it?

I haven't tried the Exynos. I have the 910F like you and its extremely fast. I suppose the Exynos is slightly faster but nothing to lose sleep over.

US vs Non-US Models

Does anyone know what the two different model numbers are? Which model is for which region and apart from fingerprint/TMobile Volte, are there any other differences between the two models?
There is only one model number just different firmware flashed.
That makes life easy. Does any one know where we can see the two firmwares compared for all it's differences?

I haven't ever used it (or even had an Xperia, might be my first this fall, but we will see), but I think I have seen an app called "Xpericheck" or something like that? Don't quote me on that. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Also, no one seems to know for certain if the phone will work on US t-mobile, just in case you didn't know. So, perhaps be cautious.
Yeah, I read that. I guess I just need to sit back and hear more from those who already purchased. Fingerprint is a must have for me, so I'll need to flash euro firmware. And if that means I lose Volte, so be it. I just want to confirm there isn't other things I'll miss out on.
I so freaking wish Sony kept the concept software going....

Source?
https://xpericheck.com for seeing all Xperia models and different firmware available for them.
Xperifirm is a tool on xda (please use the search) that can download those firmwares
I've been having wet dreams about this phone since the rumors started in June. I just need to make sure I'll be able to get a US warranty and flash the UK firmware without unlocking the bootloader. I'll order it immediately when I confirm everything works.

If this is the case, I am in between buying the US version which will come with the warranty or international version without warranty but fingerprint support. VoLTE is not a big deal for me as of now, but I would like to have the finger print working with US warranty, would that be possible by flashing the necessary firmware?
Thank you!
i have the international variant (asian). everything works fine on Tmo, with the exceptions of voLTE and voWIFI. i am pretty certain this means band 12 is not functional, either, but i will do what i can to verify that.
so far, i have not noticed any issues at all with speeds, connectivity or compatibility. everything works as i expected, including fingerprint scanner. if anyone has any questions about functionality, i would be happy to test.

buy US version with US warranty. assuming you don't have to unlock bootloader to flash international firmware (i haven't tried), you should always be able to flash back to US software if you need to cash in your warranty.

Thank you, I am still waiting for the phone to be delivered at this point but I still want to have the fingerprint functionality.. Hopefully it'll work!
Hm. I'm able to download, via Xperifirm, the firmware files that I'm looking for, but Flashtool does not currently have the XZ1 Compact listed as a supported device. I'm not aware of a way to convert those files to the needed .ftf extension without Flashtool and I don't want to have to *pay* to download it from Xpericheck.com. Anybody know of an alternative?
EDIT: Never mind; I took a second look at the Newflasher thread in Sony Cross-Device General and got it working.

Any issues with using the Xperia XZ1 Compact on T-Mobile? I'm looking to get this one for my wife as she wants a smaller phone, and we're using Ting (T-Mobile MVNO).
Some users are reporting that the non-Japanese models have a problem where they reboot if used while charging.
Can anyone confirm whether or not all of the bands are the same on both versions? Like, if I get the US version, will it support all of the international LTE bands with or without flashing the firmware? I don't care about fingerprint readers.

As far as I have found, the two variants are the same phone, the only difference is the firmware flash that sets radio frequencies and disables/enables the fingerprint sensor on the power button. I recently got my wife a model that was originally international, but reflashed for US, and it has had no problems.

I have a Hong Kong variant flashed with UK firmware and all bands work.
VoLTE and Wifi Calling don't work, but B12 (and all of the other bands) work fine.
