[Q] Camera with bootloader? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sony has said that installing bootloader in the Xperia Z1 will disable the camera, but I've read that if you recover the TA, the camera works again. Is this true? If so, could I install different kernel ROMs (like CM) with a working camera?
I'm sorry if the question sounds dumb, I'm new to Android.

Firstly, you don't "install" the bootloader, every phone has one, you just unlock it to get access to it.
Secondly, you can restore the TA but that RELOCKS the bootloader so you cant use custom kernels.
Trust me, when this issue is sorted it will be big news so you will get to know it.
Currently this is the situation
locked bootloader = stock kernels = working camera
Unlocked bootloader = stock or custom kernels = NO CAMERA
No question is dumb if you don't know the answer, but please get used to searching before asking, that way you definitely wont ask any dumb questions

Thanks!
But the only ROM with the stock kernel is HONAM1Z, and I have no idea what features it has....
The other stock kernel ROMs are just updated firmware with root, but there are 2 that are basically the same. Which one should I use?
Do you need bootloader for mods? (like PureXAudio)

You choose any one you want. No one on here will tell you want you want, its up to you to try, test and decide for yourself.
As for other mods, no you don't need bootloader unlocked. That is only for custom kernels.
If you read the OP of each mod it will tell you the requirements and if it does not say "Requires an unlocked bootloader" then its fine to use on a stock kernel.
You will just have to root, install recovery and flash them.

Do ROMs need to be of the exact model number?
For example, you have a ROM for the C6903, but I have the C6906. Can I use the ROM?
Or if mine is build number 14.1.G.1.518, and yours is 14.1.G.2.257, can I still use the ROM?
And does the phone get unrooted when updated OTA? And how do you know which build number is newer?

I would first suggest you read the tutorials in the general section and the dev section.
Most, if not all, your questions will be answered there and I will only be cutting and pasting information from there.
As something to think about, when I first joined xda I spent a LOT of time reading guides and tutorials before doing anything to my phone.
I am not saying I wont answer your questions, but the answers are out there for you already and taking things steady will give you the best chance of learning and not doing something daft to your phone and bricking it.

Best of luck, and I am available via PM if you need me

Thanks for the threads! They were pretty useful
Although I still have questions about ROMs. If your room is for C6903, and I have 6906, can I still use it? I would guess that you can, as the only thing that change is the baseband.
Also, what ROM do you recommend? Yours (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504638), this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440408) or generic 534 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2505796)?
Do you know what Honam1Z? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2463675). I cant seem to find the advantages of the ROM....
Thanks again for answering my questions, mate.
And I'm sorry if you have received this same message by PM. My sent box appeared empty after I sent it, so I didnt think it reached you.

[Q] NooB Question

Firstly I apologize as I have found this being asked before, but not in these circumstances. I am new to android being a long time iphone user. I now have a N7000 that I used PC Odin to flash LPY. I have noticed all of the concerns over bricking and with my lack of knowledge I am thinking I should flash a custom rom to avoid these issues.
My question is which is a good rom to go with, ICS (Such as kingdroid 2.0 or something GB?) More accurately what is the best process? I am currently not rooted. I am ignorant to android and I have noticed a steep learning curve making the transition. I explain this to help understand why I am asking this question.
I have attempted to search, and I have browsed Dr. Ketan's thread, and I still cant find a good answer. I just don't want to have a bricked phone trying to get to a custom rom. Any help or suggestions is highly appreciated.
Should I root it first then use CWM to switch to another rom?
What custom roms are recommended for easy use out of the box?
Another quite simple question is if I saved all of my contacts to google are they currently synced, as in if I switch to another rom they will still be accessible?

What I would do if I were in your place: I'd revert to rooted GB like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25285584&postcount=3
then I'd flash one of the CM9-based Roms, because they are the only truly safe ICS Roms ATM, and these are
1. official CM9
2. Asylum
3. Paranoid
4. MIUI
5. KANG
Also, your contacts are safe with Google, and you can restore them in no time at all.

Thanks for your response, when you say revert to a rooted GB is that the process through PC odin? Also does it need to be one of the safe roms? It seems the problem stems from a wiping command?
Hello!
Yes , use pc odin to revert back to gb, i did so, i used an prerooted stock gb .
Then follow chasmodos guides to go to ics again.
One more thing, to back up my apps so they are there on the new rom do I have to be rooted?

yes !! to use app like Titanium Backup !
or since you probably downloaded all apps from Google Play Market
then when u install your new firmware/rom you can simply download all of them from google play(but u lose the data of those apps )

[Q] Xperia T

Hi,
I have a Xperia T with bootloader unlocked (which removes warranty) and a custom rom, but I want to lock the bootloader again and go back to the stock ROM. I don't know which ROM it is because my friend did it all for me, but he is not my friend anymore and doesn't want to help me with my phone. I dont want the custom rom because i dont see any use to it and some things dont work like WhatsApp and the camera.
So my questions are: Can i go back to stock ROM, if so how?
Can i Re-lock the bootloader so my warranty will be back. Or at least a way to hide that i have had a custom rom?
Thanks in advance !!!
Mardinio
As far as I am aware yes. You can re lock (search in the development forums for the ftf file). Get back to stock first by either repairing with pcc or by flashing a stock firmware. I think that's all your questions answered? Don't ask me to post links, just search in the dev section!
Click the thanks button if I helped!

OK, I understand you cannot ask in that thread, fair enough.
But a bit of reading will tel you that you can not flash that rom on stock kernel.
Please read this you will make much further steps forward if you try for yourself instead of asking..
its the old story of giving a man a fish or a teaching how to fish.
I remember when I was a noob at Android Rooting and Flashing, but now all of that changed. Now I flash tons of weird files onto my phone and flashed more than I can remember. I even hard bricked my TL before. ( i got a new one from warranty ). My question is... Why bump this old thread

Camera Still Broken After Custom Rom?

HI Guys
About to get my Z1 but i have a question.
Have we managed to solve the issue with the bootloader being unlocked and the camera stop working?
Trust me, when that issue is fixed it will be plastered all over this forum so there will be no doubt about it.
If you find no new news then its still broken.
PS, you can still install custom roms without unlocking the bootloader, just not custom kernels.

Thats an interesting one, I come from an HTC background so used to unlocking bootloaders to flash a custom ROM haha
Of course thats what i thought on that it would be put on the forum.

Installing official firmware again

Hi,
Not sure if I'm in the right place, but I have the Sony Xperia Z and recently got it rooted to the Cyanogenmod, but not quite liking it.
My dislike isn't necessarily the firmware itself, it is that I really like the Sony-made functions, specifically the camera (it's better quality than what Cyanogenmod is giving me)
So my question, if I install the official firmware back onto the phone, is it still rooted? Can I still go into recovery mode, for example?
I see XZDualRecovery on my memory card, as long as I keep it there, will recovery mode work?
If the only way to keep these stuff working is use a custom firmware, then out of the many firmwares out here, which one still uses the Sony features? Which one is actually based on the official firmware?
I see a lot but all the new terms and options out there is just confusing.
Thank you.
Please do not post any thread like this in here. Its A development Thread. Pls read some rules before posting in xda..
And now u r in cm 11. After flashing stock firmware u will lost root and cwm recovery. 100℅. Otherwise download any stock rom and flash it. Pls don't ask which rom is good. All roms r good.
Best regards..
Hi, thank you for your response.
As mentioned, I don't know if I'm in the right place. I just noticed the other sections; I'm happy for moderators to move this to the correct place.
Also, I think you misunderstood my question.
Yes, I know all custom firmwares are good - but I'm asking which one is still using Sony's features? I really want to have the Cybershot quality of photos.
If there is a custom firmware out there, which is it? I ask because it's confusing as I'm new to the various terminologies used here. EG. http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/orig-development/kma-cm-11-101-sony-kernel-blobs-t2708325
Does that mean it's still using all of what Sony offers, then more? Or just meaning this is for Sony phones?
So my concern again is, which custom firmware is still using Sony's features?
If there's none, then thank you for answering my other question - I guess if I decide to go back to the official firmware, I will not have all the features of a rooted phone, which is unfortunate. But i just had a thought, I remember during my initial rooting stage, before installing CFW, it was all rooted and all. Does that mean, if I go back to OFW, then root it again, as long as I don't install a CFW, I can still use the OFW with rooted features? (as in, download superuser and stuff like that to use)
But yes, please, any moderators out there, feel free to move this to the correct section. Sorry.
Well, decided to reinstall the official firmware - will now root it and keep it on the official firmware.
Thank you.
Use flash tool to get back, then root it with towel.
That's it
@bitsnpieces There are some explaination for almost all terminologies in android. here you go
Awesome Orangewanted - thank you for the link.
@K9998 - yep, that's what I did in the end - took some time to get it all working but super happy with what I have now. Also been reading that Sony's 4.4.2 KitKat has problems so I'll probably be on 4.3 for a while, also because it still has some sort of SIM support which I prefer to use...
Use .233 firmware

You can use .233 firmware and flash true Flashtools. I dont see any problems with 4.4.2 Sony Firmware ( not acording to battery drain, but its google fault not Sony ) Here is the link Firmware .233
Awesome! That's exactly what I was looking for (of course, previously had no idea how to do it, but worked it now, and didn't know where to get the stuff I wanted, which now there is).
However, my biggest beef is that, from what I understand, Google removed SIM card support in KitKat? Because my contacts are all on SIM (and though I can save it to card, and then just transfer them over to KitKat contacts, I don't like linking my Facebook and Skype accounts, etc, into my contacts... Thus when I was using Cyanogenmod... Contacts was just a mess), does Sony's KitKat version still support SIM usage (incase Sony worked out a way to keep it working)?
It'll have the Cyber-shot camera which I'm happy about (presuming they kept it in KitKat), but SIM is the next big thing for me...
Please post questions and troubleshooting posts in the Q&A/Troubleshooting section.
You will receive help much more quickly if you post in the correct section
