Torrents and chromecast - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey I recently got my awesome chromecast in the mail. I was wanting to start using Amazon prime instant video, but for now I was wanting to use my downloaded movies. I know I need a computer to do most casting but I don't have access to one at the moment. I looked online to see how I could steam my own files. It took to a download page to air cast apk. But when I tap on it it immediately goes back to my home screen. Like opens up real fast and stops. I checked two locations and the same thing happened. For the time being what can I do ?

Trying to keep browser open in background so I can stream while texting and stuff.

Any way at all to keep browser open in background so that I can lock it and have something streaming still? I've been listening to radio 1 from the BBC and I always have to keep it unlocked and have the browser open....

Use skyfire.
Nope. I'm curious as to why no one else has posted this before. I stream music and I don't want my battery to be drained cause of the screen being on. Is there a setting in sky fire that I am missing?

Hbo go for tablets

Hbo go was recently updated to support tablets. For some reason I can't get it to work on my 7.7. The app installs and opens just fine however when I go to play a video the Hbo splash screen shows then it sits there loading and never plays. I also have a 7.0 plus and the app works fine on it. I don't know what the problem is. Anyone get this working?

Mine has never worked because my cable company that provides HBO to me does not support HBO Go.

Does Chromecast play back Google Play movies in HD or SD?

Was thinking about picking up some sale movies from the Google Play store now that we have the ability to show on the big screen via Chromecast. In the store, it says that HD is available for Android devices, and SD is available for the web. Does anyone know what format Chromecast will play back? Thanks

YouTube forces the highest quality possible if you cast from a phone, however, through the chrome browser on a desktop you can adjust the quality. I imagine it works the same way. Netflix pushes HD if available.

Google Play Movies plays in HD when cast from a Android device. I've never tried casting it from the web.
playback messages
When I use Youtube to send a playlist of trailers to my "TV" (it's actually a front projector), I get an onscreen message at the head of every trailer that contains a Youtube logo, the name of the trailer as well as download count info. I really don't want this extraneous info appearing on the screen at all. Don't know if it's being generated by the app or by the Chromecast hardware. Can anyone guess as to how this crap can be turned off. Believe it or not, this "feature" is a deal breaker for me. I'm using this in a home theater ... and I want to have as close to a cinema experience as is possible. I just want the trailers to play one after another like they do in a theater ... with out all the notices..

There's no way to change this yet at all. Maybe after Google releases the sdk but doubtful this will be something they will allow us to change...I understand what you're trying to do but a "deal breaker" really?

The picture quality on my chromecast was just awesome. My tv stayed at 1080p. I like the chromecast because i can buy movies and tv shows and bill them to my phone. until now i would hookup my laptop via hdmi but it was just 420p.
I think you'll be happy.

Any way to stream Netflix as a regular tab?

As a work around for using Netflix outside of the USA.
I can use Netflix USA very easily on my pc but I haven't figured out how to do it with the chromecast.
I don't have a fancy router and standard vpns don't seem to work.
So maybe if one could cast the Netflix tab on the browser as a "regular" tab, instead of rerouting it to the Netflix app on the chromecast.. Anyone thought of a way to do this?

Have you tried casting the chrome tab that you are playing Netflix in instead of hitting the cast button in the Netflix player?

Yeah it doesn't work, it will redirect it to Netflix app.
If you hit learn more, it will show that it doesn't support plug-ins like silverlight or QuickTime.
Maybe once Netflix switches to html 5

I knew I had done this before so I played it with some. I was able to get video to cast but it wouldn't send audio. I guess when I played with it before I saw the video and went along my way. Maybe use google remote desktop and login to another machine and play netflix while casting the remote tab? Its not perfect and its far from pretty but it works.

Hahahahah well I guess it DOES work, but my wifi is far too slow to handle it properly.
Interesting enough, the cast entire screen feature works okay for me (some lags here and there, could be performance issues because of my low end laptop) , but it's watchable.
If only it had freaking sound.
Oh well the remote desktop app didn't have sound at first either.

Works fine for me but I have to bump it down to 480p. From my chromebook.

A router that can support Linux commands is not all that expensive. You might want to look into that again.
