How to get - Speak 'OK Google' Working - Nexus 5 General

Speak 'OK Google' Working
Is you OK Google not waking up?
Go into settings
Language and input
Change language to English US (NOT English UK)
You should be good to go...
MJ-12

Also don't use wechat pebble, it interferes with the OK Google thing.
Took me three factory resets and several app restores to figure that out

Is there a mod or a trick to keep the "ok google" from the us voice setting, but still keep my native language voice search?

Not that I know of. I think that is something that google will need to something about.

Sorry but are you saying "OK Google" should wake the phone, as in if the screen is off?

No it cant wake the phone unfortunately.
From the home screen, say 'ok google what time is it?' for example.
There are only a few google apps at the minute that enable this speech function.

[Q] Google Now hotword detection stops working

Google Now used to respond properly to the "OK Google" hotword. But now it frequently loses that mode (even though the hotword setting is still checked off); the search bar just says "search", and the spoken hotword has no effect.
I can get the hotword detection back by rebooting the phone, but that's the only reliable method I've found. It disappears again within a day.
There's no obvious app causing the problem. The problem occurs even if no other apps are running. I don't use any other apps that detect hotwords. Phone is stock/unrooted.
Any suggestions?
I read in another forum that your language needs to be English (US) for 'Ok Google' to work. Its under Language Settings > Voice Search > Language
you should also ensure that hot word detection is checked.

Thanks, but the language setting has been US English all along, and hotword detection has been checked all along. If those things hadn't been the case, hotword detection wouldn't have worked even after rebooting the phone.
Happily, though, it's now been several days since I've seen the problem occur. I have no idea what may have changed.
Disable all third party app that's in accessibility. Lightflow, smart launcher notification, etc etc.
You might have to update the offline language pack. Go into the voice settings - offline speech recognition and under installed it should show English (US) and uninstall underneath if it's up to date. If it needs updating just click on it. If that doesn't work, uninstall the language pack and install it again.

Thanks, but nothing of that sort was ever enabled. And as mentioned, the problem seems to have fixed itself (so far).

[Q] Always Listening Google Now or S Voice a la Moto X?

Does the S5 do the Always Listening with the screen off like the Moto X?
As in, while the screen is off you can say 'OK Google Now' or 'Hi, Galaxy' and get S Voice or Google Now to open?
Thanks!

Don't think so, unless there's another setting. Just tried on my S5 and Google only works if you in the homescreen, not sure about S Voice.

Dang. There might be a setting for S Voice to turn on Hotword Detection maybe?
Even if only S Voice works, there are apps to replace it with Google Now which would be fine by me!
From what I can tell from messing around with the S5, the "OK Google" hotword only works when you have the Google search bar on your homescreen. You take that bar off and it stops working. Other than that, I haven't been able to find any setting to enable it while the screen is off or without the google bar, unfortunately.
According to this article you can use S Voice with the screen off, it's not working for me though. Anyone else get it to work?
"Use S Voice Without Touching the Galaxy S5
Samsung includes S Voice on the Galaxy S5 as a Siri competitor that can perform many actions. Normally you double tap the home button to access this S Voice, but you can set it up to respond to a command even when the display is off.
Open S Voice – Tap on the Settings icon in the upper right -> Choose Settings -> Voice Wakeup On -> tap on Voice Wakeup to set the wake up command."

Yeah, it let me customize the phrase - so it seems like it should work. I couldn't even get it to work with the screen on though, so I'm wondering if I'm not doing something quite right.

Voice command "Ok Google" not working from home screen

Hi,
As far as I know, and according to the official guide, I should be able to launch Google Now just saying "Ok Google":
You can see a menu of simple tasks on your watch, and anything in this list can also be said aloud. Just say “Ok Google” or swipe the home screen to the left until you see the Speak now option and say your command or question.
Click to collapse
However, I can't launch Google Now with my voice. Command does work pretty well on my cellphone, but not in the phone. I tried waking up the watch, pressing the side button, but nothing works. I can only swipe to the left until I see the "speak now" option. I got my watch from Amazon as "refurbished", so I'm afraid something is wrong with it.
Thanks
xx
Fixed the problem! In my case, it was a language related issue. My phone is set to English (US), although "Google voice typing" is set to Spanish. I have to pronounce "ok Google" with a US accent, while on my phone I can use "Spanish" accent. I just got used to it and talk to my phone with a different accent, but I read there's a Xposed module that lets you change language for Wear. Hope this helps.

disable OK google listening

Ok I was able disable the OK google and it only listen when I press the mic icon. Now no matter what I do in the google app settings it's always listening. My only current option is to disable microphone permissions which isn't what I want since I can't press the mic icon and speak.
I had it setup on the note8 with android 9 to only listen when the mic icon is pressed. Got the note 9 did the same settings and it still responds when I say OK or hey google.
Currently have the microphone permissions disabled since my phone does NOT need to listen all the time. Is there a setting I am missing?
I had to remove the Google search widget to stop it from always listening. It is stupid that they removed the option to simply turn it off.

Exactly. Disable the "Google" app improve the memory and battery usage, imo
Interesting, I disabled the Google app for about 30 minutes and could not use voice with chrome so turned it back on. The mic permissions are enabled but OK google is now disabled yet I can push the mic icon and use voice for searching again.
So its exactly how I want it but a very strange way to get there. I have no clue how this worked but it did.
Well after a restart and about 20 minutes it went back to listening.
That's odd - it's definitely off on mine, but I can't find where I deactivated it! I use Nova Launcher, and there is an option in the Settings under 'Gestures and Inputs' to disable 'OK Google hotword' - maybe that's how I did it? But 'OK Google' doesn't work anywhere on my Note 9 (did this to save battery and because I have a Google Home & Mini).
EDIT: And I do have the Google App installed.
Not sure what's going on. Google runs me around when I tired to ask them. I know exactly where the setting is and its disabled but still listens for the "OK google "
Personally I would love someone with influence to get attention to this but it seems a little hit or miss on setups so not sure. I have the mic disabled.
I did do a really stupid test if my device was listening and used let's say red flag words to see if anyone was listening. Ironically the words I used are related to an event happening in my city which was horrible timing on my part but semi proved to me no one heard it.

Yes that works. The only thing I don't want is it to disable voice in chrome app which this does.
The settings to disable OK Google are there but don't function and google themselves either don't understand what I am saying or don't want to admit the setting doesn't function as it should.

It's not easy to find the option to turn off the Google assistant, but it's there.
Settings > apps > (three dots menu) default apps > device assistance app
You'll want to change "device assistance app" to "none" and then "voice input" to "Google". The you should be all set.
To go a step further, you can disable the Google assistant from running at all on your device.
Google app > "more" (lower right hand corner) > settings > Google assistant > assistant
Then, at the bottom you should see "assistant devices" with "phone" listed. Select phone and then toggle Google assistant off.
This should do the trick.

I was able to do the first part of device assistant app to none. The voice input option doesn't allow me to pick just google option.
Either way this has solved my issue and is now working they I want it to. Going to try a restart and see if it persists unlike my previous attempt.
Thanks again for finding this.
I like having the search widget and be able to type or voice input my search if I don't know how to spell something. With all the news of companies admitting they listen and record voice stuff having my device always listening is very unsettling. I guess it's a little paranoid but I live in a bad part of my city and I really don't want to be red flag because I walked by a drug deal which happens all to often.
That's strange, because that exactly what it should do when you disable Voice Match, since it is said that's it's actually the "anywhere OK Google listening".
Try deleting your voice imprint on the same setting page too maybe.
I wonder why is working fine on my phone and not on others.

Google assistant

Anyone notice on their new pixel that the new assistant is not working? The assistant is Still the old one, which you'd need to keep squeezing or repeat the hey google phrase.
What language are you using? It didn't work for me when set to English (UK), but works when set to English(US). It seems it is limited to English(US) at the moment.
Also cannot be used with a GSuite account, has to be a personal Google account.
I've switch to english US and have always used a personal Gmail account. Not sure why it's not working. Might just wait for google to fix the damn thing.

Where are you from? It is U.S. exclusive. Not just the language setting English(US). Don't know if you knew that. I'm from germany and I won't get it until they open it for us...
I got my phone yesterday (in the UK) and once I set it the assistant to us US English it installed an update and just works using the new assistant style, so it's not U.S. exclusive in that sense. Thankfully they've also added UK English voices for the assistant to use when talking back (when set to U.S.)

After giving up a few times, I notice that I was missing the google home app. After downloading the home app, in settings there were an option under continue conversation where you can enable or disable "shared devices". I disable that option and, What do you know, after squeezing the phone for the assistant, it automatically update itself to the new assistant. Hope this help others too.

Go to settings, search "continued", and toggle the option. Works with squeeze, "Hey, Google", or tapping the assistant icon on the search widget.

Oh! My bad. Didn't realize that was necessary. I read gestures and was thinking Motion Sense gestures. [emoji2359]
I know Android is all about options and all and sucks that it's not an option for the button based navigation but why not use gestures? It's very fluid and quick.

Sorry to hijack the thread but is anyone else having issues with the squeeze for assistant feature? Mine seems very temperamental.
If I leave my phone locked for a bit, then lift it, it unlocks and the squeeze is not working. I then have to tap on the power button to lock it again, unlock and it starts working again.
