Has anyone been able to restore text messages and if so what app/process did you use?? I tried titanium backup and it failed and it goes through the process but nothing shows up in SMS app.

SMS backup and restore
"SMS Backup & Restore" from the play store. i made the sms backup on my S4, moved the files to my PC, then transferred them to the N5 and did the restore through the same app.
Go SMS let u backup to their cloud and restore from it too. That's what I use. No files to transfer at all.

That app failed for me. It first asked me to set it as a default and then tried but failed miserably.

Worked for me fabulously.
My SMS backup and restore said it was restoring my text and then said they were all duplicates except for one and there was only one conversation in hangouts. Tried it twice with the same result, my google account is connected to sms backup and restore but it is not restoring them to hangouts.

I've tried every app and none would restore them to Hangouts, even though they would say completed. In the end I disabled Hangouts cos it's sh*t, and installed the proper AOSP messaging app for Android 4.4 (you can install it the normal app way and it works, but it won't let you save senders numbers unless you install it yourself as a system app. Anyway, once that was installed, went into it and there were all my messages I'd restored earlier that weren't there in Hangouts. Hope this helps.
SMS backup+
SMS backup+ has worked well for me... can back it up to gmail. Saved my pants in court before.

Hi there
I would like to backup my SMSes (only sms,not the app) using Titanium Backup. May I know which file should I choose to backup in TB? I tried exploring around but couldn't find anything that looks like my SMSes.
You need SMS backup from the market.
Sent from my Galaxy S using XDA Premium App
Actually I have made a full backup with TB previously, so now I wish to restore my SMSes. Problem is, I do not know which file. And I do not want to do a full restore as I only need to recover my SMSes. Any help?

Man, as far as I know Titanium is just for backing up your applications... It doesn't backup SMS nor anything other than apps...

My guess is that SMS is part of the data for a particular app. So when I backed up my apps and their data, my SMSes should have been captured as well. Only problem is I do not know which one is it.
Please correct me if my assumption is wrong.

I've restored sms's before using titanium backup. Can't remember how though.
smsbackup is alot simpler.
Well, that's good to know! If they are saved with data for an app, that app should be sms app, I suppose.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
no, sms app (mms.apk) does not store any sms in its data store. there is another process calles message store, this seems somehow related to the sms data.
look under the m section section of apps when you view backup/restore apps in alphabetical format and you will find an app in yellow titled '[sms/mms prefs] messaging' and I believe if you restore that one you will get your messages back
There is a very good free app called SMS Backup+, it can backup your SMS, MMS and call logs directly to Gmail with proper label. It can restore it from there as well.
So I installed evolve SMS and everything was ok. Now after a day when a new text comes in and I reply it just disappears when I press send.
I uninstalled evolve SMS and have the same issue with my stock SMS app.
Any ideas as to what it might be or a fix??

reinstall stock sms from stock firmware zip.
if still nothing restore from backup
if you dont have a back up time for a factory wipe.
if you still have the same issue sounds like something got deleted and you need to restore to stock and re root.
I'm not rooted so how would I reinstall the stock app. I haven't deleted anything.

If you're not rooted and not custom, might go to the carrier and ask them to fix it.
Just a warning that there seems to be no way of backing up or saving your messages from Text's AT ALL!
So if you just back the app up on titanium like I have been your fine... Until you want to switch SMS apps.
Then you'll find you can't export messages from Tetra to anything else. They seem to force you to stay with them!
Just a warning.

It can't find them for me, neither can I using file explorer. Have you backed up and restored using titanium?
I think that's what the issue is and I've seen a lot of people mention on here that that's what they're doing (as I was), so thought I'd warn them.
You're backing up "Messages (SMS & MMS)" in Titanium Backup and not the Textra app itself, right?

Because Textra keeps all your messages when backed up and restored by titanium, I had been freezing the default meaning app on the last few ROMs I'd tried.
This was fine until I want to swap to something else.
The problem is, all my messages are in Textra, but you can't get them into anything else or back them up.... I'm stuck using it!
i juse easy backup app which backups my text , call logs etc to either the internal memory , dropbox or google drive . It does a restore as well. handles everything from setting the default app etc .

My point is though, I bet it wouldn't back them up from Textra... Only if you have them in your default SMS.

Nope, just tried it. It backs up Textra with messages in it (same as Titanium), but doesn't back up messages FROM Textra so you can put them in another app.
Thanks anyway though!
I think my messages are stuck with Textra.
Confirmed from the developer, there is no way to backup messages or export messages from Textra, so everyone make sure you backup up your sms separately or you will never be able to leave!
This isn't true. I just backed up my SMS from textra using SMS backup and restore from the Play Store.. Textra itself doesn't have the capability built into the app... I have used textra, hello SMS, evolve SMS and others and I am able to restore them all. This seems to be a case of operator error.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Edit: why is this in apps and themes?

It is user error because I backup apps with titanium backup and it'll restore all my messages and they even show up in the stock android sms app. Its annoying because I flash a bunch of roms and when i restore it'll show up in the stock messaging app and hangouts before i set textra to my default app. I've been backing up and restoring since november and it shows up on other apps when i restore with titanium backup.
Yes, but you guys clearly don't freeze or remove the default messaging app when using textra. I've read loads of people on here say they do and didn't want them to be in the same position I'm in.
You can backup from the default SMS app, and from every other SMS replacement app on the market, but not from Textra. That's from the developers mouth.
Well I haven't had any problems using Textra yet... I'm using it since I got my Nexus 5 in November 2013 and saw that Hangouts replaced the default SMS/MMS app.
In fact I'm not SMSing so much anymore and backing up SMS' ain't that important for me, but your post alarmed me a little. So I installed some of the other SMS apps from the Play Store. Every single app displays all the messages in my storage, so on my case it seems like I have a common SMS storage and I'm certain that Helium Backup & Sync offers to backup that storage.
Maybe that's an option for you?
Btw I'm running Stock 4.4.2 rooted with Xposed Framework enabled, just in case it matters

All that would do is remove my messages from Textra. I want to get the messages out and into hangouts but it won't let you.
I just deleted Textra app data and uninstalled. Installed Chomp and all texts were still there. Uninstalled Chomp and reinstalled Textra.
Hangouts, my only other installed sms app, has been frozen since day one.

That will be because you didn't freeze or uninstall the stock SMS app.
The lesson is, don't freeze or uninstall your stock SMS app if using Textra, or you'll never be able to move them to another app.

Dont think so since all backup programs use (moust of them) same format.I was backing up sms call logs and contacts since icecrream with sms backup and backup apps and everything is working fine never had any problems.
Would it be due to the fact that you have changed your rom and the new messaging app is not compatible with the one you used?
To restore messages in kk the app must be programmed so that it substitutes itself temporarily as the messaging app.
It's app dependent, it either supports 4.4 or it doesn't
Hey guys, been off and on with XDA for a while. I just bought a Note 4 today coming from a Nexus 5. Been trying to transfer/restore my SMS's via the SMS Backup+ App and my gmail account. I am positive the SMS's got backed up due to the fact they're all in my gmail account SMS section with all my recent texts. The biggest problem I'm having right now is getting the SMS/Texts to show up on the application "GO SMS Pro". I was able to see my texts for a brief few seconds before it magically disappeared with this message on my screen showing it. It says "Tip: If the messages don't display properly, maybe GOSMS been prohibited to read the messages by permissions management app, please reboot your device or modify the permission settings".
I have already rebooted the phone. Any idea what this issue is?
I had a same problem. It seams that sms backup + is not compatible with kit kat. I used easy back up

I think it could work if you set up sms backup+ as default messaging app. Restore from gmail and change default to go sms. Kit kat allows only one app at the time to make changes to text messages. If go sms is default than sms backup + wont be able to make changes. Problem is that sms backup + is not available as a choice when I'm trying to change default messaging app. Maybe someone with knowledge can modify sms backup +.
