asuming from this http://linuxonandroid.blogspot.cz/p/working-devices.html it is possible
but as said on http://www.ubuntu.com/phone/install
Ubuntu for phones is intended to be used for development and evaluation purposes only. It is an early release that can potentially brick your device. It does not provide all of the features and services of a retail phone and cannot replace your current handset. This is the first release of Ubuntu for phones and it will continue to evolve quickly. Please read the disclaimer as well. This process will delete all data from the device. Restoring Android will not restore this data.

so there, you probably can, but android would still be better

Thank a lot, I think i must pray for ubuntu touch work on kindle fire hd nearly...

The only software available for the Kindle Fire is the stock OS provided by Amazon, or any of the ROMs posted in the KFHD 7" Android Development thread. Any attempt to install any other software will brick your device with no way of fixing it.

Ubuntu Touch Native on Kindle Fire HD 7

Hi all,
Successfully rooted, flashed, and installed jelly bean 4.3 on my kindle fire HD 7 NY following seokhun's guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
Now wondering of anyone had tried installing Ubuntu on the kfhd. Official Ubuntu touch should be released later this month. Developer preview out now but only officially supports a few Samsung devices.
Might take a gander on how to go about installing the preview later this week. My guess is that there will have to be tweaks made to cm before it'll work properly.
See more here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Install
It was ported to the first gen, kf2, and 8.9", I am considering trying to make a mini base like hashcode did for the 7" model, but I need to ask him a few questions probably before I start trying to flash test builds onto my own device.

Ubuntu itself was ported or do you mean chrooted? Or do you mean your working with the developer preview of ubuntu touch? I've seen plenty of people run Ubuntu chrooted but to my knowledge its more similar to a VM on android. I've long suspected that it was possible to boot into the full desktop version of Ubuntu on android systems but haven't seen or heard of it being done. Luckilly an official build of ubuntu for tablets and phones is being released soon.
I meant the Ubuntu touch preview, we already can test it out on the other kindles but we have to use an older version of the preview because of a bug the came into play when they went to a flipped os until hashcode fixes it.

Wow, great news.
Is there anywhere I can follow progress of successful ports?
Just look at the threads in the android development sections for the kindles, there is no 7" android minibase available, but if I'm not busy I might give a shot at making one, not too sure if the kernel will compile smoothly on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, but eh I'll maybe give it a shot sometime next week. Hard part is I have no idea about the initial stuff that runs as I'm more of a Linux pc person than a android person( even though Linux is at the base of android and Ubuntu touch.)

Thabks & will do. Actually just found hashcodes thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2168221 and the Ubuntu device wiki here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices if anyone is interested.
Good look if you attempt to modify and build the base code yourself. Keep us updated!

[QPAIR/LOA] - LinuxonAndroid GPad support

This will be used to detail how to get LinuxonAndroid running on the GPad and the process of QPair support to bring new and interesting features to the project as a whole.
Step 1 - Install Linux on the tablet
We shall start by using the standard Complete Linux Installer to install and run Linux with the GUI pumped over VNC (Frame buffer method coming soon!), this method works on most devices and is the most universal but as the project develops in the coming weeks a better method for the GPad will be developed.
Anyway on with installing!
Root
First things first you will need to root your tablet, currently my tablet is running Stock V50020d with root.
The below will most likely work on other ROMs as long as you have root it should work!
(A custom ROM may be developed for further features.. watch this space)
Download
Now we have root you will need to download the below:
Complete Linux Installer
Terminal Emulator
VNC View (I recommend PocketCloud)
Finally download A Linux .img file from our source forge site HERE, I recommend and will be using Ubuntu 13.10 Small ext4. Once downloaded extract the .zip file and copy the .img to your devices memory (internal memory or sdcard).

Let me understand, you want to port QPair to linux that will run on the G pad?
Disclaimer: I'm also in the challange but the idea of running linux on the tablet is really interesting.

I guess @zacthespack wants to use linuxonandroid on tab and sync stuff with a third party such as keyboard, etc using QPair.
Another Disclaimer here Good luck to everyone!

Bingo!
With linuxonandroid running on the tablet we could then use QPair to allow the user to have a phone (or another tablet..?) as the mouse/keyboard for Linux
posted first steps in OP to start getting LoA running on the tablet.
Everything is running very well, I shall finish the guide shortly to get LoA running but really the app install guide will work perfectly.
Next step I will be releasing a special Ubuntu 14.10 image which will be the supported image for QPair features and other changes for the GPad.

Stock LG kernel does have loop support so you should have no issue here, if you are having another issue getting linux to start let me know, shall be updated the OP in the next few days

Howdy, cool project. Couple of questions. I'm looking for a reason to install Linux on my tablet, but also understand that I can remotely view my home system with vnc. So what would be the benefit?
Is there more control using Linux to Linux?
Does this mean I could open into my home system, make changes to my kernel, compile, and upload to a server from my tablet?? Late night insomnia while in the mountains would be awesome. I would have to tether my tablet to my phone for WiFi, and run through Linux? This sounds pretty awesome.
Tell me the reasons it won't work.
Pretty awesome OP. Thanks!
Cant log in ubuntu
Can somebody tell me why im not able to boot?im running lollipop with red kernel and before i was running kitkat and still the same.Im my g2 there is no problem but on tab doesn work.I download complete linux installer, busybox, terminal and vnc and i never get the @root.i trh also a differend image but nothing.Any help will be appreciate

Just a guess.
80% chance of root
30% chance of unlocking bootloader.
from what I've seen over the years, the more popular the device is - the more likely we'll see it customized. I plan on getting one because I think the market will be flooded which should mean that there will be a lot of developers playing around with it

The main limited factor on release will be that it will be limited to the Amazon Store. Once we get Google Play Side-Loaded and hopefully an eventual root, you can expect more out of it.
Sideload Google Play
I have successfully gotten Google Play to sideload on my Amazon Fire. One thing that's surprising to me is the ending code for Google Play Services. When I updated it through the Play Store, it grabbed suffix -230. Does this mean that the 5th gen has Android 5.x? I can't find the Android OS version on the tablet.
( From APK Mirror )
* X defines Android version:
0 for Android <5.0
2 for Android 5.0 and 5.1 starting with Play Services v8
4 for Android 5.0 and 5.1 before Play Services v8, Android >= 6.0 after
7 for Android 5.0
8 for Android TV

How To Sideload Google Play
I don't know if this is the right place to post this, so if it's not, please move it and let me know.
1) Download ES File Explorer from the Amazon Marketplace. It's free.
2) Enable Developer mode and ADB -- Amazon Fire (2015) Tips and Tricks
3) Find the four APKs needed to install Google Play. Versions I used are listed:
Google Play (v5.9.12)
Google Play Services (v8.1.15 2250156-230)*
Gmail (v5.6.103338659.release)
Google Account Manager (v4.4.4-1227136)
* I used -010 and it worked, but complained until I could download -230 from Google Play. Which means -030 should work as well.
APK's 1-3 can be found on apkmirror.com, but the last one can't. If you're like me, you don't trust random mediafire links, so eventually I figured out how to create and transfer the APK from my Galaxy S4 (using App Backup & Restore) which did the trick. If someone wants to host this somewhere official, I can send it to them, but it doesn't look like I can just attach a file, because I'm noob level here.
4) Once the APKs are installed, Services is unable to contact Google. Using this guide, allow Services the access it needs with adb.
5) Restart the Amazon Fire and open Google Play to confirm it's working.
I did this purely for a cheap device my children can play Ingress on. Despite what I've read online, Google Play works without any issues at all. I'll still be testing it during the week (as well as sideloading their Fire's), so if I have updates to this, I'll be sure to post it. Since the Fire isn't rooted, everything in the Amazon Marketplace works, even Underground.
Enjoy

I tried Play Store install on following this post. Worked fine, just had to update Play Services(?) when installing Play Movies app. No need for adb or root. Worked even without a reboot but did one anyway. The Google Settings app won't open, though I don't think that really matters (never used it before..)

Good to know you didn't need adb. I was having some trouble with it registering my account through Play without it. However, my Google Settings does load, so maybe the adb helps.
I'll do another Fire tonight and test these things.

Small update: Paid apps, google apps all work fine without adb but apps that utilise Play Services don't work.. Perhaps you were right all along
EDIT: It's working now. I used this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/themes-apps/how-to-install-gapps-root-t2954372 Probably the restarting was the key. But I can't get Google Settings to start.
What version of FireOS are you running? Do you have the 5.0.1 update? Interestingly I can't get Google Play running following your guide. When I open the store, the page where I have to log in does not finish to load.
The Google Account Manager I used is Version 5.1.1. Any Idea where I can find an older version?

hoping to port Ubuntu touch to 9th gen fire 7

I've never ported a ROM before but would really like to port Ubuntu Touch to my new device.
If anyone can point me in the direction of what to read to begin, I'd greatly appreciate it
Edit 2 add
I've seen ubports runs natively on another tablet with the same\similar soc as in my 9th Gen fire 7 tablet.

"Ubuntu touch" is an o\s for phones and tablets, on arm architecture.
Obviously x86 (x86_64) software will not run

I have tried porting this to my phone before but with no luck(I got a working halium kernel but couldn't get ssh working) . This will probably be easier to Port to a tablet because less going on. Good luck!

If this works, please do it for the Fire 7 2017 too. Android is too much for this tablet. I could help a bit too (my knowledge of making ROMs and building them are low though :fingers-crossed
But now I have become distracted by work.
It is still an idea I have in my head, for when I have more time. I've not given up the dream.
For now, the sources for lineage 14.1 are incredibly "work in progress" anyway

Root Fire 7 (9th) OS 7.3.1.7? Push my limits

Hello dear community,
I have a 9th generation Fire 7 with OS 7.3.1.7 from a good friend.
The device is to be bricked.
Professionally I am an IT system electronics technician and as a hobby I am a tecnican-freak, but this is where I reach my limits.
I have already opened the device and tried the hardware method, but I also get an error message in the terminal. So that I cannot unlock the device or the bootloader.
With MTK-SU this is no longer possible with the OS as I have already read and tested.
My question is, is it still possible to crack the device with this build (date 12/20/20)?
Or am I doing something wrong?
Linux installation
mustang
magisk
everything followed as described in these instructions https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/fire-7-2019-mustang-unbrick-downgrade-unlock-root.3944365/
A reasonable instruction video would be desirable if something like that exists
I'm from Germany so sorry if the English is a bit broken
But I hope there is some way to help me
Many Thanks
Edit:
regularly at Check GPT it breaks off see on pic 2

Hello dear community,
I have a 9th generation Fire 7 with OS 7.3.1.7 from a good friend.
The device is to be bricked.
Professionally I am an IT system electronics technician and as a hobby I am a tecnican-freak, but this is where I reach my limits.

What device is listed as a lsusb? If you can access the bootrom (MediaTek Phone 6227) you have hope
If you are willing to experiment I have a couple ideas I've been contemplating as I have a device I want to root also.
Basically two methods mirroring the original, a hardware method (involves probing SPI/UART) or software method leveraging finding a exploit in userspace. (linux or arm based)
WARNING: DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR DEVICE
I HAVE NOT TESTED ANYTHING PERSONALLY!
I'm just spitballing from a perspective of a advanced Electronics engineer and Linux backround. (none in pentesting or ANDROID environments) Which is what we need.
The Mediatek vulnerability was a once in 5 years exploit and it seems unlikely to find another exploit that wide open.
For the hardware method you'd need a USB - > TTL/UART/SPI adaptor you could try to crack root but if there isn't even a login console then you are out of luck with that aspect.
Proposed software methods:
This might be made to work if compiled for arm32-bit

There's also Ghidra if you are a pro binary analyzer which might be the best bet but also the hardest.

Got a interesting idea i'm working on, todo with fbtool and unbrick on this particular type of Fire 7, requires compiling lineage, possibly a bit of reverse engineering - currently thinking about it still:
Fire 7 2020 mustang Brainstorming
Trying to brainstorm ideas for unbrick (firstly) of the new Fire 7 2020 Gen 9 models that feature 6.3.1.5 and were released post Feb 2020. Already have a method to downgrade this and many other devices (HD8 Onyx and HD 10 post patch Feb 2020)...
forum.xda-developers.com
The problem is that they secretly revised the hardware for that model .
After the first production run made in 2019 , without the public knowing
They started to lock down the whole tablet.
its not only software locked , its hardware locked on the chip .
Most people didn't realize they did this after the initial 2019 production run .
Any chance I get I advise people not to purchase a newer amazon tablet . especially
The gen 9 .
You can't go wrong with the tablet 7 , gen 7 .
every variant for that Amazon model is flashable . even the ones that need to be opened up
to do the hardware short .
It doesn't look good for the gen 9 model ,
Its locked down harder then Pam Anderson growing up in the 80s .
I've successfully downgraded from FireOS 7 using the hardware method. Latest magisk canary etc

That sounds good .
just curious , what year is that 9gen .
That could be more documentation on exactly what year model 7 , gen 9 could
be modded . maybe you found something different that could work after the
2019 batches that were shipped. Idk . I just know what I seen until know ,
but absolutely there could always be exceptions.
Chris.

mtksu software method will never work on fire os7
However, you can use the hardware method, which installs twrp and allows for downgrade back to 6
