High-speed charging? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Perhaps I'm not understanding how USB 3.0 is supposed to work with the Note 3. On both my work PC (Dell Optiplex 1020, 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise) and my home PC (Dell XPS 8500, 64-bit Windows 7 Professional), whenever I connect the Note, a popup comes up saying the following:
"This device can perform faster
This SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device can transfer information if you connect it to a Super Speed USB 3.0 port."
1. The ports being used on both computers are the blue USB ports with the USB logo that has the SS. Those ARE the 3.0 ports, aren't they?
2. I'm definitely using USB 3.0 cables (the 2-part connector), not a regular micro USB cable.
On the Note itself, when I click on the USB options, it gives me the option of enabling "USB 3.0" for data transfer, but when I do, it tells me that it's only temporary and will turn itself off after 10 minutes since it interferes with wifi.
So what's the deal here?
Is USB 3.0 broken, or is it strictly an on-demand feature? If the latter, how does this impact the charge rate? Does just using a USB 3.0 cable provide the faster charging rate or if the USB 3.0 capability on the phone is not active, does the charge rate drop down?
Thanks in advance.

I believe its a on demand thing. My computer does the same thing.

I've never had this issue. I plug mine in and it automatically reads it as 3.0.

Problem connecting tab with usb

i'm having a problem with the usb of this device its a sprint galaxy tab i brought it used. under menu / settings / wireless and network i dont see an options for usb and when i plug in the usb cord to the computer theres a red x on the battery, windows doesnt even prompt me to install drivers i'm lost on what to do next
Try to use a different usb cord. . . By the way. . . What rom are you using in your tab? Because it seems that BOCA ROM doesnt have usb setting
i'm using the stock sprint rom and the usb cord is brand new i brought it from the t-mobile store yesterday
also what would the cord have to do with no usb options showing up under wireless and networking
Use a different usb port, and try a different pc.
Under setting>>wireless & network>>usb setting which do you choose? This option is important as your usb cord function depend on the selection of usb option. If you choose kies samsung, make sure you have the software install on your PC. If mass storage, make sure your have SD card inside and its not corrupted.
The battery with the x red cross i think is normal each time you connect it to PC. If you connect it to AC plug, then the x cross will not show.

Ok there is a similar post on this. Plug tablet in and charge it. While tablet is charging unplug your pc and then reboot it up to reset the usb ports. take your tablet and connect usb cable to pc. Ensure you have the samsung usb drivers loaded. Put your tablet in download mode and using odin try reflashing. You can try this if you don't have a second pc.

[Q] USB OTG: usb1 found, cannot use keyboard

Hello,
I have a USB OTG cable and dell keyboard that I have tested and work in OTG mode on a Nexus 7, however i cannot get them to function with my HP Touchpad 32gb, running CM9 2.6.35, built on Sun Oct 28.
The device recognizes when I plug in anything via USB, but only as a generic Linux USB hub, and not as any particular device. Are there any steps to take to debug this? Has anyone had experience with this type of an issue?
Thanks for your help,
Cory
I don't know if this is the issue, but I know the touchpad doesn't support OTG like the the Nexus does. I think you need a Y-adapter + OTG to provide power since the micro usb port doesn't give any power to the device you connect. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.
Apparently even a powered USB requires a powered Y cable to be properly recognized. I hacked together a quick Y cable manually, by splicing in another USB cable's power and ground (Red and black) to the respective locations on a female USB cable. Works as expected.
I am now communicating with an Arduino over Serial
Thanks!
Read this thread, should give you all the info you need:

Basically the Touchpad has OTG but it provides no power.

I'm curious if you are able to charge with this cable hack while using usb devices?

Agreed. I think people just are not stating reality regarding the ability to charge and use OTG Hosting to USB devices at the same time.
My goal here has been to attach a flash drive with video/audio media and play & charge on long flights. It looks like play, charge are mutually exclusive on my beloved TouchPad.
I've asked for the specific confirmation of this from this YouTube but have never had the poster reply:

There are devices out there that have very advanced micro USB device implementations. Sadly the HP is only superficially supportive.
I for one cannot wait to get my SGN2 smart dock which offers:
Charging
OTG (x3 USB)
Audio out
HML HDMI out

[Q] USB Charging vs data Synch Cables

Can anyone enlighten me as to what the exact difference is between these two USB cables? Are they wired differently internally or is it just a difference in the quality of the copper used?
I have tried several USB "charging only" cables to connect my GT-N7000 to a PC. Some will data synch and allow file transfers but only in one direction and only some of the time, some of them won't connect at all ie are charge only.
At least one cable I bought from a leading IT store stated "USB Data/Synch" on the packaging but only works as a data/synch cable on a Windows XP netbook but NOT on my Windows 7 x 64 desktop PC. It won't connect for data synch at all on the desktop.
I have Samsung's USB drivers installed on both machines.
Only the original Samsung Data/Sych cable works reliably for both charging and data synching on both my PCs.
Can anyone tell me what's going on?
Thanks in advance
Trevor
All of those cables sound non-standard. A decent charging cable like the original Samsung one will likely have all 5 pins: power, data-, data+, ground and the other one which I can't remember. The power will be rated at at least an amp for charging and it should all work fine.
Power only cables may just have power and ground to keep costs down and some data cables are only rated at 500mA as that is to the USB spec.
I'd just get another Samsung cable, pretty cheap on play.com.

[Q] S5 not being recognised as usb 3.0

anyone else have this issue? when i plug in my phone to a usb 3.0 port it says this device can perform faster if connected to a super speed usb 3.0 port, when it already is. tried a different cable, and tried updating my usb 3.0 drivers...faulty port on the phone maybe?
usb 2.0 works fine...can still transfer files and charge no problem.

are you using the usb 3.0 cable that came with the device? if not thats probably why
The default USB Computer Connection setting (when connected to your computer) is to use either Media Device (MTP) or Camera (PTP) in USB 2.0 mode. You have to manually change it to Media Device (USB 3.0). I noted that after 10 minutes of inactivity my phone reverted back to Media Device as a USB 2.0 connection.

How do it change this to USB 3.0 Mode?
The option isn't there for me in the drop down menu? Yet it still says the device can transfer faster if connected to USB 3.0. help please!

Fast charging

To get the s5 to take advantage of fast charge do you just need to have your cable plugged into a USB 3.0 port on pc? Or do you have to have a "system" you buy as an accessory?
And how is this compared to just the Samsung oem charger that comes with the phone? With the USB 3.0 cable.

I believe typical usb charging on a pc is equivalent to 450mA, and if you enable usb 3.0 mode you can get 900mA, and it will stay at 900 even after your phone turns off usb 3.0 after a timeout period for lack of data transfer use. The S5 comes with a 2,000mA wall charger, so it'll charge much faster that way. That's my understanding anyway fwiw.
