Rooted and updating to 4.3 - Xperia SP Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I have a rooted Xperia Sp(C5302). We know that our device is gonna get the 4.3 official update next month. My question is can we update to the official 4.3 even after having root or will it cause a problem.

As said above, root is no problem with PC Companion.
However, if you unlock the bootloader, no update whatsoever (PC Comp, OTA). After bootloader unlock only Flashtool /Emma will let you flash new ROM/updates.

Hi , so if i Relock the boot loader i will be able to use ota rite?
which is the safest method to Reload the Boot loader
I am using BL Unlocked Rooted Stock Rom ,

I think Sony stated on their unlock website that once you unlock the boot loader there's no way to relock. Check out unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com

After unlock/recovery/root, how to return to stock?

Hi there!
I've unlocked using flashtool, installed CWM Recovery and rooted using the recovery-only root.
Now, I need to return the phone to as stock as possible - certainly removing root, but relocking the bootloader would be a good secondary objective.
My current plan is to use the flashtool to relock the bootloader, then use the PC software to repair the phone. Will this work?
Thanks for your help
Edit: I've searched the forums but can't find an answer, including in the starting thread - please link to a relevant portion instead of the whole thing if possible
Further edit: There's no 'relock' option in the flashtool - huh?

As of now there is no option to relock the bootloader. You can unroot the phone by simply performing a repair system command in Sony PC Companion or flashing a stock rom. This has been explained in every single rooting or custom MOD thread.
Ya you are right. Relock bootloader using flashtool and repair or flash a ftf from flashtool.
And IIRC in the beta version of flashtool u will find option to relock under BLU. And btw u won't get back DRM keys and no Bravia engine.

I don't see the option to relock anywhere - perhaps as I did the unlock on another PC?
If you can't get it to work with PC Companion use SUS (Sony Update Service which you can download from Sony's website) http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/update-service/ --> for UK

You have to relock the bootloader with flashtool beta4,click on BLU.
Flash a stock rom and repair it by update service.

Thanks - I expected there to be a separate button for relocking - whoops!
I've flashed the stock ROM and that's gotten rid of the root. It also says that the bootloader can be unlocked, so that seems all perfect as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for your help, ladies and gentlemen.

[Q] SUS no longer works ("modified software"), phone is rooted with locked bootloader

[Q] SUS no longer works ("modified software"), phone is rooted with locked bootloader
Hi,
I was trying to help someone on the Dutch forum of Androidworld.nl who is unable to update or restore his C6603 using Sony Update Service due to "modified software". He says that he only rooted his phone (using Bin4ry's tool) and that he did not unlock his bootloader, nor any other mods.
In his service menu, under ‘Service Info’ > ‘Configuration’, he currently has "Bootloader unlock allowed: No." (probably due to the root). Under ‘Service tests’ > ‘Security’ it just says 'none'. He still has his four certificates under ‘Service tests’ > ‘Verify certificates’ and Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 is still working for photos in the album app.
Does anyone have any idea what can be the cause of this?
He has a branded firmware from his carrier (Vodafone NL), which is not available as FTF, so he would lose this by flashing the Generic NL version with Flashtool.
He need someone to upload the same firmware for him or he can flash any available firmware.

That would be a solution, but do you have any idea why Sony Update Service would refuse to update or restore his phone and give the "modified software" error? I thought this only happens if you unlocked your bootloader?

Not sure what is the cause, maybe he has some system files modified.
Maybe he can try the bootloader status fix by @fareeed and try sus again.
Will try to find the link.

Thanks! Probably a noob question, but how do you flash a ZIP if you don't have an unlocked bootloader + recovery?

Root and install it, links in the stickys.
It's a single file just replace it in the corresponding folder with root explorer.

Updating via FOTA or PCC with u/l bootloader

Hi,
The long awaited 4.4 is rolling out.
Can I update via OTA or PCC if I have an UNlocked bootloader? If not, how can I update my device?
I unlocked it through Sony's official website on 4.3.
Thanks.

Wait until an ftf comes and then flash it
If you don't know what you are doing then don't unlock your bootloader

What makes you think I don't know what I'm doing? because I don't know if OTA still works when you unlock the bootloader?
This isnt a device out of Cupertino, if Sony wants to lock the bootloader and make it a headache to get root, this isn't Android's philosophy.

No,
The only way would be to relock the boot and then OTA or PCCompanion.
Trying an OTA with an unlocked boot can lead to a brick (As mentioned on the warnings on the Sony website) and PCCompanion updates will fail once it sees the "Modified" software of an unlocked bootloader.
As said above, if you want to keep an unlocked boot, you need to flash a FTF when they appear, or relock, update and unlock again.

Can I flash regular sony roms with unlocked bootloader?
Or am I have to relock my bootloader for it?

No, you cannot use Pccompanion to update software with an unlocked bootloader. It downloads the files but then stops with a warning saying you have modified the software (i.e rooted the bootloader) and then aborts

Thanks. I wasn't sure about this as my old xperia play barely got any software updates. Duh. It was released with Android 2.3.3 and left at 2.3.7. Since the Z1 is really powerful and custom kernels don't really give that much of improvements or actually useful features (d2tw drains the battery like crazy) then I decided to stay on stock kernel with LB to keep bionz and other stock features.
