Rooted but I can't remove bloatware? - Moto X Q&A

I've tried deleting the bloatware manually using a root explorer but it isn't letting me delete them. I've tried using Titanium Backup as well and it says it uninstalls the apps, but when I check my app drawer they're still there. What's wrong with my phone? All root apps are working perfectly so I have no idea what's going on. Anyone know what the problem is? This is on my Verizon Moto X, by the way.

Try freezing apps with titanium backup instead of deleting them.

Tried that, nothing happens. I've never seen this on any phones I've rooted in the past and have no idea how to go about fixing it.

I believe the moto x root method only allows you to make permanent changes when booted through the recovery. So try that.

What do you mean exactly? Go into recovery and reboot from there? Oh and by the way, freezing in TiBu worked, but I need to uninstall the MyVerizon app. It doesn't work. When I open it it just freezes up, hence why I'm trying to remove it so that I can install it from the Play Store directly.

Recovery is hijacked into a version of the system with system-write enabled. So it is no longer a recovery. All you need to do is boot into recovery and it will seem like you're booting normally, but you can do root changes. Then reboot normally after you're done.
Also, this is why I don't like to root my moto x. Way too complicated and it messes with OTAs. (never take an OTA when already rooted, since you don't have a real recovery you will end up in a boot loop. There are certain steps you need to take.)

Wow, that seems like a really complicated root exploit. I wasn't aware it was like that. The only reason I rooted was to add the one-click toggles to the quicksettings page in the notification bar and to add in a few other toggles (e.g. rotation toggle). The bloatware was just something I noticed today that I figured I'd remove (mostly the MyVerizon app, since I actually need that to work since I use it frequently). I am aware that I should never take an OTA, though. That part is clear to me. Thanks for the help, man!

Are you using safestrap? Check the settings in TIBU, is there an option for freezing system apps? Maybe that's the problem.

Before you go deleting bloatware--could you send me the "CallerID" bloatware app? I really need it; if you do, I'll walk you through every step of the way.

What's the file name?

I honestly have no clue. :| It's only on the Verizon MotoX as far as I know. It's "CallerID" something. It's in /system/apps. The icon is green, I know that much.

Rooting/Flashing ROM questions

How compareable is flashing roms on the Droid 3 compared to the HTC Eris. I'm tired of the lag and bloat and wish to try some new ROMs. I just don't want brick my phone. Rooting looked simple but I don't understand bootstrap/safestrap. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Get bootstrap/safestrap from the internet -- install the app.
Run the app, install recovery.
Turn phone off.
Press m + power.
Scroll to BP Tools -- select it.
You're in custom recovery.
Which is better, bootstrap or safestrap?

Safestrap by far, the rom will install to another partition /preinstall rather that /system. This keeps the VZW rom intact to prevent bricking and still get OTAs easily. It's practically impossible to brick it using Safestrap.
Thanks, I'll be giving this a try!

So root (obviously), install safestrap, then I just boot into recovery via safestrap and flash Liberty 2.0? Just being anal, the more I read the less confident I get. Once I burst my cherry, I should feel better. Lol. Thanks for all the help everyone!

if ur stock 5.6.890, root, install otarootkeeper, install safestrap, open the app, install recovery, boot into recovery (during boot you will hit menu), backup data, toggle safe mode, install ROM, wipe data/cache, reboot
---
check http://hash-of-codes.blogspot.com/p/android-downloads.html for safestrap and CM7 downloads. also if you are on 5.7.894 you will need to use his patch to run any roms.
Did you mean wipe data/cache THEN install ROM?

most roms either way will work
Rooted, install ota rootkeeper, installed and ran safestrap, rebooted into recovery, tried to turn on safe mode and got error. rebooted and tried to make a back up, got error.
Error occured when attempting to make backup image of /data
Happened both times. Am I royally screwed?
Phone works still but I don't dare flashing a ROM until I get safe mode. Hints?
If im not mistaken, rootkeeper doesnt need to be used unless you are going to install 5.7.894, as it messes with your roms ability to access SU
Droid 1 Rooted (ChevyNo1 0.9MV Kernel, LGB2.6)
Droid 3 Rooted (Stock Kernel, Custom lite De-bloat)
My phone had trouble mounting as R/W when i got a SU update via the superuser app off the market, i unprotected and updated my binary again and it worked fine. Keep OTA Rootkeeper installed, activate it before upgrading to an update that has no root method yet, then after you reinstall SU, and reestablish the symlink in your new update, remove the protection and verify you still have root. Its not necessary for CWM recovery tasks though
Droid 1 Rooted (ChevyNo1 0.9MV Kernel, LGB2.6)
Droid 3 Rooted (Stock Kernel, Custom lite De-bloat)
So if I lose ota rootkeeper, I can create a backup? My problem is I can't create a data backup or switch to safe mode. It gives me an error message that says unable to create backup image of /data. Am I corrupted? My phone still works as far as I know.

Safestrap and bootstrap(I believe) have issues creating a backup of a file that cannot be changed. So yes if you remove it, then you be able to use safestrap correctly.

Any other ideas.

[Q]Safestrap installs but will not allow me to boot into recovery.

Hi everyone. Not sure anyone will be able to help me, but I figured I'd chance it. I also hope that I'm asking this in the right area. If not I apologize. So I got a Note 3 (AT&T) today. IN LOVE! After doing some reading I used Kingo to root. Everything went great and my phone is now rooted. To confirm this I downloaded root checker from the play store and it confirmed that my phone is definitely rooted.
After some more research I came across safestrap. For the last 2-3 hours I have been trying to install it with zero luck. Basically, after I download the 3.71 apk, installed the apk, followed the prompts and completed the installation safestrap says that the installation was complete. Unfortunately, the state: still shows not installed and I am unable to choose reboot to recovery. It's greyed out and can't be selected. Any chance that anyone knows why this is happening? I have tried just about everything that I can think of and the result has been the same every time. Sorry so long, but this is driving me crazy and I wanted to be thorough with my explanation. Thanks in advance for any help or fixes that you come up with.

Same result.
Uninstalled Safestrap, Disabled and turned off lookout, and rebooted. After reboot I reinstalled safestrap and tried again. The result was the same. No install and not reboot to recovery after a supposed successful install. Would re-rooting possibly make a difference?

Let me go ahead and make it weirder. I just rooted AND installed safestrap on my wife's note 3. It worked perfectly and without any problems. The only difference between our phones, that I'm aware of, is the color. She has white and I have black.
The model number, Android version, baseband version, kernel, and build number are all the same. I would be lying if I said that it isn't making me want to cry.

Is it possible to use something other then safestrap? Maybe clockwork mod and then install roms manually like I do for my nexus 7? Or is safestrap the only only option due to Knox? Also, Thank you for the help. If for some reason

That's what I figured. No biggie though. I am pretty satisfied with root and xposed framework. I've managed to delete and/or disable most of the apps that I don't use our want. I'll try to figure it out again if/when a new version of safestrap is released. Granted, I really don't think that it'll make a difference. My phone seems to have a grudge against safestrap. Oh well. Thanks again!

WARNING! TOWELROOT:Phone does not boot after enabling U Power Saving Mode

UPDATE2: This only seems to happen if you uninstall the Launcher system app. Mine does not seem to be affected by Xposed or other mods, and works 100% fine now in U Power Saving.
Just decided to try Ultra Power Saving mode after rooting and modding my phone yesterday. I'm not sure what exactly caused it (xposed, root, w.e) but my phone will not boot past the ATT Globe now. Just thought everyone might appreciate a heads up that they may have to factory reset after enabling this setting.
I'll update if my phone decides to boot up (letting it sit now)
UPDATE: It seems that after rooting, U power saving does have the potential to BRICK your phone. DO NOT ENABLE FOR ANY REASON AFTER ROOTING.
My gut says the culprit was uninstalling Launcher.apk (thought it was the google launcher >_>) gonna have to factory reset now.
More info dude
You might have just freaked out a noob here. Root was just achieved yesterday for the Verizon and ATT platform. Please post your hardware software state so we don't get confused here.

I disagree. There are serious disk space concerns with this phone. If I am not going to use an app,and I have root, I am deleting it to recover the space it takes plus any associated files. If that breaks something, then that sucks. You can always reinstall through factory reset.
I'm fairly confident your wrong. Factory reset won't make uninstalled system apps reappear. That's why they don't let you delete them normally.
Just Odin back to stock after Odin flashes reboot into recovery and wipe all data reboot and all should be well

[LG-H901] Stock .img Files (Boot, System, and Recovery)

These are stock .img files that we pulled once TWRP got booted. If you break something (like flashing TWRP incorrectly), you can use these to restore it.

recovery.img - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5fMrmukgO0NUTUtdXdVZTM5MGs/view?usp=sharing
system.img - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5fMrmukgO0NcTYxVHhkSkxfelk/view?usp=sharing
For a flashable zip of the img's: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v10/development/lg-h901-stock-images-device-restore-t3241170
If you're having trouble flashing system.img because of file size (you will). Move it to the /sdcard folder on your phone however you want (simply drag it over to storage), then in adb shell, "dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system" or simply use TWRP.
Flashing these would be the same as you would on the nexus right? I.e fastboot flash system system.img

As you were resetting up the phone, lg should have showed you the list of uninstalled LG apps...it ALWAYS does, but I know it is easy to skip over them as well when setting the phone. There should be another way even after, will edit this post once I set up my phone again.
But to answer your main post, flashing the system.img wont bring it back because the phone will still see them as uninstalled. You just have to reinstall them from the lg app list

I froze a few apps then when i noticed it i unfroze them and still nothing. After a factory reset it was back to normal so not sure if that had something to do with it.

Cool sounds like you got it back up and running. I straight up deleted the bloats. My motto is, if it doesn't have an icon (i use rom toolbox pro) leave it alone. Lol.
