Hey gang, I've got a bit of a conundrum here.
I'm the lucky owner of a Nexus 5 and it's a terrific phone. Problem is, my first love was the Moto X. I went with the N5 because it was cheaper off-contract as I currently have NET10. I'm still a little bummed that I didn't get the Moto X and I'm sure it'd be easy to trade the N5 for one but first I'd really like to try one out. Are there any good carriers out there that I can pick up a Moto X from and test drive it for a bit and then return it without taking too much of a financial hit? Carrier doesn't really matter, I want to test out the phone itself, not the service.
Ideally, the phone would be perfect for me and I would be able to trade someone's upgrade for a brand new Moto X from motomaker. Know of any reputable places where people trade phone upgrades?
Thanks all!
Whoops! Just realized this should go in Q&A. Please ignore!
Republic wireless just started selling the moto x for 299 with no contract and a 30 day money back guarantee . if you return it within that time, all you pay is the $10 shipping
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
trust me go to ebay look up Gazelle store they got good condition moto x going for $340 and obviously off contract. 30 day returns and even free return shipping. I was stuck in the same situation as you choosing between these two. Problem is still haven't decided.

I had the Nexus 5 first, then got the moto x. Quickly fell in love with it and returned the N5.
I went thru 4 devices in the past few months and the only one I paid any sort of restocking fee was the Note 3.
If I were you, go to a radioshack and grab a moto x on a new line with a new carrier, try it out.
I know you will like it. its like your Nexus only better in the hand, with older software, and extra features.
I want to get a Moto X, but I'm under contract with Sprint until April and would like to switch to ATT. I'm wondering if I should buy the Moto X today with the $100 off, wait until April to see if the price drops more, or wait until summer for a possible new version of the phone. Right now I'm leaning toward buying today with the $100 off coupon, but I thought I'd seek the advice of my trusted XDA community. Thanks in advance for any advice/help.
I guess it depends on how set you are on AT&T? If you are certain about AT&T then I'd probably order it as I don't see the Moto X going any lower than $299 for the majority of people.
I also wouldn't expect a new version until August 2014.
You could also just buy a used one in April. They'll probably be about $200 by then.
Keep in mind there are a plethora of phones to be dropped between now and April
MotoX Developer Edition
No...they will likely be on sale for $300 again between now and April. It was less than two months ago they were $350 on sale. Plus you'd lose out on a few months of warranty buying now and letting it sit.
The only thing with getting a used one is I want a specific setup (for me, a big part of the appeal of the Moto X is the customization) and it may be hard to find one used, in good shape, the way I want it. I'm not really interested in any of the other upcoming phones coming out before April, so I don't feel any need to wait and see about those. The thing I'm most hesitant about is getting the Moto X and having a significantly better phone in the same line come out just a few months later. Then again, I guess it's hard to beat $300 off-contract, and any new phone will be significantly more expensive, so it may not be worth waiting until then.
Just buy it, worst case you can sell it when you move on. I've been buying and selling phones for a while and usually I end up spending maybe 400 a year after profit and loss but I go through 3+ phones in the process. I just sold a 400 nexus 5 white for 399.95 all I lost was tax's and shipping so I rented a nexus for 3 months for 60 bucks. 20 a month is Cheaper than subsiding phones with carriers.

If you're going to switch to AT&T, unless you're planning to go the prepaid route: it makes better sense to buy on-contract as I recall the Moto X is free then.
If you are certain you want to switch to AT&T, I say purchase it now. My answer is based on the fact, however, that I came from a Galaxy Nexus and anything was a welcome upgrade, and I had decided that I wanted only the Moto X. I'm on Verizon, and have to be due to crappy coverage from everyone else, and will never see another Nexus again. The Moto X is really the only viable alternative. I've pretty much decided to stick with Moto from here on out, provided they keep up the things they've been doing lately. So essentially, if it were me, I'd know that I'd still be set on the Moto X come April. If you're a specs chaser or always want the next big thing, I say wait until April to pick a new phone. I really doubt you'll see a newer Moto X before September though.
with the new generation of the moto x being released, are there any discounts or coupon codes for the first generation moto x through motomaker?
Once you say "any kind" you open yourself up to stuff like this:
http://www.motorolatradein.com/
I ran through the questionnaire and it offered me $60 for mine. Needless to say when you can get 3 times that much for just the screen that's not a very good offer.
I'd wait a while. I'm sure something better will be offered.
I am on Republic Wireless. They have always sold the Moto X for $299 off contract but they won't have it as early as other carriers due to their hybrid WiFi/cell ROM, which takes some extra time to roll out. If you want inexpensive service ($40/mo. is their most expensive plan) and are willing to do your own tech support you may want to consider them.
There are caveats to consider. So search the site for "caveats" and you will see what they are.
thanks. I'm looking for an off-contract gsm 64gb version. motomaker had a $100 off coupon a few months ago, just wondering if another coupon exists thats still valid.
Was wondering the same myself.
Probably, but too late, I already preordered the new Moto G. I'm interested in that dual speakers. It'll make a good backup device.
I'm also waiting for discounts! I don't like that they made the new Moto X big so I'm sticking with the old one!
I think all the discounts were the ones already run the last few months. It sounds like many configurations of the original X (TOX?) are already sold out. I think they have been doing pretty decent inventory control for a while in anticipation of the changeover. I could be wrong, but a huge fire sale on large volume would surprise me. I know configurations, such as 64 GB, for some services are already sold out.

Pissed, haven't even received my 32GB, black leather, red trim phone yet, and I can get it $50 cheaper now. My wife has an upgrade available too, can I buy a new one and return the phone to Verizon w/in 14 days?

Why not try asking Motorola for a credit. For the inconvenience of still waiting for your phone and since they've discounted the price. Pick up a turbo charger and a case or something.

Working on that now, though I really only want to get the $50 discount. Only headache is related to the upgrades. The Moto maker process did take my upgrade, so I spoke to Verizion, aside from having to play some upgrade ping pong with the upgrade on my wife's line, there shouldn't be a problem placing a second order and getting the upgrade back when Motorola cancels my first order. If I didn't have another upgrade available, this would be a much bigger deal.
I only placed the original order on 10/8, which is one reason why I am miffed about the discount. I realize that Moto can't always just apply sale pricing to previous purchases. I'm actually pleasantly surprised that they are willing to take the phone back w/ no penalty (15 day buyers remorse program, includes return shipping via FedEx). The upgrade ping pong is a minor annoyance and worth the $50 to me. It would certainly be nice if they could just cancel the first order... on hold regarding that right now. Cancelling the order wasn't possible.
Overall, both Moto and Verizon customer support were very helpful, and I'll be able to get my discounted 32GB, black leather, red trim Moto X 3 days later than the original.
Hey all, my Nexus 6 will be here tomorrow, and I want to make sure that I understand what I can do with my Turbo. I bought a Turbo Nov 1, on contact with my work account, I'm assuming I can simply put my Nano-Sim into the N6 and off I go. But, I would like to sell my Turbo to off-set the costs of the N6, am I going to have any issues with that? The phone would be clean to sell correct?
Thanks in advance.

Yes
You can sell it. The phone will be clean.
yes, as long as you arent doing one of those payment plan deals with verizon.
Excellent, hoping to recoup most if not all my investment into the N6. Got the 64gig Ballistic Turbo.
I suppose that really depends on how you purchased the Turbo. did you buy it literally on contract? or did you do the verizon Edge plan? or did you do a 2 year contract?
Regardless of what you did if you sold the phone it would be CLEAN however if you did something like cancel your contract for your 2 year contract with out paying the ETF and your account goes into collections OR if you are on EDGE and you stop paying the device portion of your device payment plan then in both instances the IMEI will be black listed and the person you sold it to will be stuck with paperweight phone.
so you bought the droid turbo and then did what, pay full price for the nexus 6 as well?
You should do a comparison when you get the nexus. I've ordered a Nexus knowing very well that I'm probably going to get a Turbo eventually. Depends on if I can survive without root or if Motorola ever makes a developer edition. Best case scenario the nexus battery lasts long enough and I won't even bother

I have both the Turbo and N6. Yes the Turbo battery is better, but that is the only thing going for it. The N6 absolutely blows it away in every other category IMO. The best part is that I feel great giving big red the finger using an unlocked and rooted device with unlimited data on their network

Yeah, I bought the Droid Turbo cause the Nexus wasn't out, then I bought the Nexus at full price. I really wanted the nexus, and don't have the patience for it to come to Verizon, so I bought the Turbo and now the N6.
I bought the Turbo by simply signing another 2 year contract. I have a work account, so I buy the hardware they pay for the line. So I renewed the contract and got the 64gig Ballistic Turbo for 50 buck as a 200 trade in of my old phone.
Just wanted to make sure I could still sell the phone after I got my nexus up and running. Otherwise I'll have to sell the N6, wife won't let me keep both.
